Penney was named co-big Ten Player of the Week for his performance against Marquette. The Auckland, New Zealand native poured in 33 points on shooting (including 5-6 from beyond the arc), leading the Badgers to a win over the previously unbeaten Golden Eagles. Penney s 33 points were the most by a Big Ten player this season and most by a Badger since Michael Finley had 36 against Missouri on March 19, TWICE AS NICE - Freshman forward Mike Wilkinson recorded his second consecutive double-double against Marquette, registering career highs in points (16) and rebounds (12) for the second straight game. Wilkinson is one of only eight players in the Big Ten to accumulate more than one double-double this season and the only freshman in the conference to do so. STATE PRIDE - s game Thursday against UW-Milwaukee is its final game this season against an in-state, Division I opponent. The Badgers are looking to sweep their state rivals for the third consecutive season. Coach Ryan is also available postgame in the media room. UW-MILWAUKEE NOTES UW-Milwaukee is 5-5 this season, including a win over Virginia Tech, and 3-1 at the Klotsche Center. Junior forward Clay Tucker leads the Panthers, averaging 16.1 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. Current Badger head coach Bo Ryan coached UWM for two seasons prior to taking the head job at. TEAM NOTES BREAKING OUT - The Badgers scored a season-high 86 points and connected on a season-best 58.0 percent (29-50) of their shots in the upset of No. 14 Marquette on Saturday. also hit.643 (9-14) of its three-point attempts vs. the Golden Eagles. MU entered Saturday s game giving up an average of 55.8 points. BALANCING ACT - currently has four players, Devin Harris, Kirk Penney, Freddie Owens and Mike Wilkinson, averaging double figures in points per game. The last time UW went a season with four players in double figures was (J.J. Weber, Shelton Smith, Trent Jackson and Mike Heineman). HANDLE WITH CARE - Senior point guard Travon Davis is currently second in the conference in assist-to-turnover ratio (3.00). That mark would be good for third all-time on the UW single-season list. His 1.5 turnovers per contest are fewest among Big Ten players in the top 15 in assist-to-turnover ratio. In the last five games, Davis has 28 assists and just five turnovers in 162 minutes. EFFICIENCY COUNTS - Sophomore guard Freddie Owens leads the Badgers in field goal percentage, connecting on 51.0 percent of his shots. That s good for 13th in the Big Ten, third among guards. In four home games this season, Owens has connected on (.765) of his shots. Inside the three-point stripe this year, the sophomore is shooting.564 (44-78). IRON MEN - Five Badgers are averaging more than 29 minutes a game this season. Devin Harris leads the team at 34.9 minutes per game, while Travon Davis is at Mike Wilkinson is averaging 29.8 minutes off the bench. Kirk Penney (29.6) and Charlie Wills (29.5) round out the UW s top five. Harris, Wilkinson, Davis and Wills played at least 40 minutes in the UW s double-overtime loss to Temple. The last time that happened at the UW was in the Badgers triple overtime loss to Indiana on Feb. 16, Harris led the way with 47 minutes played against the Owls, the most by a Badger since Michael Finley played 49 against Purdue on Feb. 13, 1993, a Boilermaker win in two overtimes. GETTING DEFENSIVE - is fifth in the Big Ten in scoring defense, giving up just 65.4 points per game. No Badger opponent has scored more than 74 points (UNLV in the season opener) against the UW this season. has held seven of its 11 opponents to 70 points or less. BACK-TO-BACK - Freshman Devin Harris reached the 20-point plateau in consecutive games against Temple (21) and Ohio (24). The last freshman to score at least 20 points in back-to-back games was Sam Okey who scored 20 points against Wright State on Dec. 5, 1995 and 27 against St. Bonaventure on Dec. 9. BOMBS AWAY - Freshman Devin Harris attempted a school-record 20 threepointers in the Badgers double overtime loss to Temple on Dec. 3. The Badgers built a 20-point second-half lead but Marquette cut it to one with 7:22 left in the game. The UW responded with a 9-0 run and allowed Marquette just one field goal the rest of the way. Penney s 33 points were the most by a Badger in 108 games against MU. CLOSE CALLS - s six losses this season have come by an average of 4.2 points. Five of the six setbacks have been by five points or less. FIREPOWER OFF THE BENCH - Sophomore Freddie Owens and freshman Mike Wilkinson are providing the Badgers with a spark off the bench this season. The duo is tied for third on the team in scoring at 10.4 ppg. Wilkinson also leads the team with 6.8 rebounds a game. Wilkinson and Owens are averaging 29.8 and 25.2 minutes, respectively. BIG ON THE GLASS - Despite having just three players on their roster taller than 6-7, the Badgers hold a rebounding advantage of 2.6 boards per game over their opponents. has only been outrebounded twice this season (they are 0-2 in those games). MR. VERSATILITY - Freshman Devin Harris is currently ranked in the top 15 in the Big Ten in scoring, free throw percentage, three-point percentage and threepointers made. He leads in scoring (13.9), minutes played (34.9), three-pointers (26), three-point attempts (67), free throws (39), steals (12) and blocked shots (eight). He is also second on the squad in assists (21). HOMEBOY - In his career, Kirk Penney is a 48.4 percent shooter in home games ( ), including 59 of 124 (.476) from three-point range. This season, he is averaging 18.5 points on 55.1 percent (27-49) shooting. On the road, Penney is shooting.361 ( ) in his career,.329 (57-173) from beyond the arc. CAREER HIGHS - This season, eight Badgers have set or tied career highs in points. Against Marquette, Kirk Penney exploded for 33 points while Mike Wilkinson came off the bench to score 16. Devin Harris scored 24 in the Badgers win at Ohio while freshman Neil Plank added a career-best seven points. Sophomore Freddie Owens (23) set a personal best against Temple. Senior Travon Davis scored a career-high 14 points at Georgia Tech while freshman Clayton Hanson lit the scoreboard for the first time, draining a three-pointer. Against Hawaii-Hilo, senior Charlie Wills matched his career best with 15. PRIME TIME PERFORMER - Senior point guard Travon Davis scored a career-high 14 points and equalled his career best with seven assists in the Badgers nationally televised game at Georgia Tech in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. He also led the UW with six rebounds, one shy of his personal best. FOR STARTERS - The Badgers have used the same starting lineup for all 11 games this season, tipping off with seniors Travon Davis and Charlie Wills, junior Kirk Penney, sophomore Dave Mader and freshman Devin Harris. HELMIGK OUT - Freshman forward Andreas Helmigk tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in preseason practice and will miss the entire season. He had surgery in late November. Helmigk s injury left the Badgers with just eight healthy scholarship players entering the season. SENIOR LEADERSHIP - Seniors Travon Davis and Charlie Wills were named co-captains prior to the season. CAL WHO? - Senior Charlie Wills has never missed a game (108 straight) in his UW career. EXPERIENCE LOST - Five seniors from last year s team have departed, including four starters. Those seniors accounted for 65 percent of the team s minutes played, 64 percent of the points, 61 percent of the rebounds and 74 percent of the assists last season. They also led the Badgers to three NCAA tournament appearances, including the 2000 Final Four. EXPERIENCE GAINED? - Seven of the 15 players on the Badgers roster are freshmen.
