3 PRESEASON NOTES The Basics On UTEP Women s Basketball UTEP returns one starter (Jenzel Nash) and five letter winners (Najala Howell, Lulu McKinney, Nash, Tamara Seda and Sparkle Taylor) overall from last year's team (29-5, 16-2 C-USA, advanced WNIT Quarterfinals). The Miners also return redshirt-freshman Jessica Barbosa while eight newcomers (Axelle Bernard, Faith Cook, Jakeira Ford, Chanel Khammarath, Roeshonda Patterson, Zuzanna Puc, Rachel Tapps and Katarina Zec) will be in the mix. The season marks the 43rd all time in program history, with the Orange and Blue aiming to continue their recent string of success. The Adams File UTEP is under the direction of 16th-year head coach Keitha Adams. The only three-time Conference USA Women s Basketball Coach of the Year ( 08, 12 and 16) enters her 21st year as a collegiate head coach at , including while patrolling the sidelines for the Orange and Blue. All six 20+ win seasons and seven of the eight with 18+ victories have been during her tenure. The Miners have hit 20+ victories in four of the past five seasons, including a school-record tying 29 in She is responsible for all four postseason bids (NCAA in 2012 and 2008; WNIT 2016 and 2014) and all four championships (2016 C-USA regular season, 2012 C-USA regular season and conference tournament and 2008 C-USA regular season) in school history. UTEP has an average record of during the past 11 years, with six top-100 final RPI rankings in that time frame. Most impressive, though, is the fact that every play who has exhausted her eligibility at UTEP during Adams's reign have graduated. Nash s Last Hurrah Redshirt-senior guard Jenzel Nash, who joined UTEP as the program s first Parade All-American, will put the finishing touches on her stellar career in When she has been on the court (Nash redshirted with an injury and missed due to pregnancy), the Miners have been sensational. UTEP has reached the postseason in all three of her active seasons-winning 29 games each year- while claiming C-USA titles in both 2012 and A returning All C-USA first-team honoree, she entered her final campaign among UTEP s all-time career leaders for assists (194-14th), individual wins (87-seventh), points (1,023-12th) and steals (174-fifth). Taylor's Town Senior guard and 2016 Conference USA Sixth Player of the Year Sparkle Taylor will be counted on to play a big role for the Miners in Last year, coming primarily off the bench, Taylor put up 9.8 points/game in only 17.3 minutes/game. She nailed 47.2 percent ( ) of her shots from the floor to place second on the squad in field-goal percentage. Taylor was the top scorer off the bench for the Orange and Blue 17 times overall. Included among that were 10 of her total 15 games played during C-USA action. McKinney At The Point Junior point guard Lulu McKinney has gained a ton of experience her first two years with the Orange and Blue, which will prove to be vital given the amount of fresh faces on the roster this year. McKinney has played in 61 games, including 14 starts, averaging 25.7 minutes/contest. A tremendous defender (1.2 steal/game in career), McKinney has also contributed 7.1 points/game, 2.6 assists/ game and her 80.8 percent ( ) career free-throw percentage makes her an asset on the court in crunch time. How About Howell With the Miners losing four starters and nine letter winners overall from last year's team, there is an opportunity for guard/forward Najala Howell to step up as a sophomore. Last year she appeared in 24 games, averaging 7.5 minutes/contest. Howell recorded at least three rebounds in eight games while pitching in five points or more three times. She also showed good shooting touch at the line, nailing 76.9 percent (10-13) of her free-throw attempts. Plenty Of Tests Prior To C-USA Play UTEP will play five power conference schools with tournaments at neutral sites during non-conference play. It will mark most such foes prior to league play in program history, topping the prior mark of three which was shared by several Miner teams. In UTEP faced six power league programs, but half of those came during its run to the finals of the WNIT. This year s team will lock up with LSU (11/24), N.C. State (11/25, Kansas State (11/26), Pittsburgh (12/19) and Alabama (12/20). All About League Games Defending Conference USA regular-season champion UTEP will open up its 2017 league slate with three straight home games to start league play for the first time since The Miners will then have seven of their next nine contests on the road, including playing four straight away from home for the initial occasion since , their first year in the league. UTEP follows that with four consecutive at home, marking the longest home stretch for league tilts since as well. UTEP concludes the regular season by playing at Old Dominion (3/2) and at Charlotte (3/4) before turning its attention toward the 2017 C-USA Championships (3/8-11). For the third straight year, the league s pinnacle event will be held in Birmingham, Ala., with UAB serving as host. Elite Company UTEP is one of 10 programs nationally (Baylor, Chattanooga, FGCU, James Madison, Maryland, Notre Dame, South Carolina and Uconn) to have won 29+ games at least three times in the past five years. The Miners were 29-5 in , 29-8 in and 29-4 in UTEP was in while going in Year In Review UTEP put together one of the finest years in program history in The Miners equaled the school record for wins (29), took home the 2016 C-USA regular-season championship (16-2) and advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2016 WNIT. UTEP also set single campaign records set for steals (397) turnovers forced (706) with Adams skillfully deploying a mixture of defensive schemes. All four games in the WNIT were played in El Paso, with the Miners averaging 6,405 fans in the timeframe. The Orange and Blue received votes in the USA TODAY Sports women's basketball coaches top-25 poll for six consecutive weeks, including breaking into the top 25 (#25) for the second time in school history the week of March 1-6. UTEP also picked up votes for a school-record 14 straight weeks in the AP Top-25 poll. The team became the first at the school to boast three separate winning streaks of at least seven contests and set the program mark for longest home undefeated surge at 19. The Miners took home three of the six major individual awards from C-USA, with Keitha Adams (Coach of the Year), Starr Breedlove (Newcomer of the Year) and Sparkle Taylor (Sixth Player of the Year) being honored. UTEP also had a league-high three of the 16 All C-USA honorees and was the only team in the conference to have multiple individuals on the All-Defensive team. Seda's Presence In The Post At 6-4 redshirt-junior Tamara Seda, who joined UTEP last year as a transfer from Seward Community College, offers the Miners a big presence in the post. In Seda appeared in 34 games, including two starts, earning 14.9 minutes/game. She pitched in 4.1 points/game and 4.4 rebounds/game, and showed an innate ability to draw fouls. Seda attempted 71 free throws (hit 33), which was more than any other reserve other than 2016 C-USA Sixth Player of the Year Sparkle Taylor. Seda got better as the year went on, culminating with her first career double-double (10/11) in the WNIT first-round win vs. Abilene Christian. '16-17 UTEPWBB 3
