AKRON-OHIO: THE SERIES Friday s game is the 35th meeting between Akron and Ohio in series history, which began in While the Bobcats lead, , the Zips won last year s contest, snapping a nine-game OU win streak. Last fall, Akron earned bowl eligibility for the second time in three years with a win over Ohio on Tuesday night at InfoCision Stadium-Summa Field. Redshirt freshman QB Kato Nelson and junior WR Kwadarrius Smith led the Zips offense with career-high numbers. Nelson tossed a career-best 322 yards in the air with a career-high four touchdowns, while Smith led the receiving corps with 132 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Seniors WR A.J. Coney and WR Austin Wolf also added touchdown receptions. Senior RB Manny Morgan led the ground attack 55 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries, while Nelson followed with 45 yards on 14 rushes. Defensively, the Zips picked-off two passes, while junior LB Ulysees Gilbert III paced the defense with 11 tackles. In the 2016 regular-season finale with bowl eligibility and a MAC East title on the line, it all came down to the last play. The Akron Zips ended their 2016 season with a 9-3 loss at Ohio in Mid-American Conference action at Peden Stadium on a Tuesday night. With 22 seconds remaining in the game, UA redshirt senior Tyrell Goodman threw a 25-yard pass to senior WR JoJo Natson in the end zone to tie the game, but the pass fell incomplete. At InfoCision Stadium Summa Field in 2015, Akron s kicker Robert Stein made a career-high four field goals, but it is not enough to overcome Ohio s two early touchdowns as Akron fell to Ohio, 14-12, in the Mid-American Conference opener on Oct. 3. Stein scored all 12 of the Zips points, connecting on FGs of 40, 33, 41, and 30 yards. Sophomore QB Thomas Woodson threw for 231 yards, completing 18 of his 38 pass attempts and had 11 yards rushing. Senior RB Conor Hundley ran for a team-high 66 yards on 18 carries to lead the ground game. Defensively, Zips seniors LB Darryl Monroe and CB Kris Givens made eight tackles apiece with six solo stops. The Zips, which honored its 29-member Senior Class prior to their last home contest, have lost three consecutive games in MAC play. The Falcons claimed their second consecutive MAC win on the road. Zips sophomore QB Kato Nelson returned to the starting line-up. He went 12-of-28 for 148 yards but was held to negative rushing yards. On the ground, senior RB Van Edwards, Jr. led UA with 69 yards on 18 carries. Senior WR Kwadarrius Smith had three receptions for 37 yards. Defensively, senior DB Jordan George (Dayton, Ohio) had a career-high 12 tackles, and interception with a 53-yard return, and a forced fumble to cap his final game at home. 4

He added a 32-yard FG in the second quarter. Sophomore DE Justin Sampson (Akron, Ohio) had a sack for a loss of six yards in the second quarter. It was the third sack of his career and his first this season. In the third quarter, senior DL Brennan Williams (Akron, Ohio) had a 10-yard sack. It was the third sack of his career. He finished with a career-high eight tackles, including two TFL, and 1.5 sacks. AKRON ADDS GAME WITH SOUTH CAROLINA The University of Akron and the University of South Carolina have agreed to play a football game on Dec. 1, 2018, at Noon in Williams-Brice Stadium. The game replaces UA s Sept. 1 contest at Nebraska, which was canceled due to lightning, and USC s Sept. 15 contest against Marshall, which was canceled due to Hurricane Florence. The game will be televised on the SEC Network Alternate channel and can be streamed on SEC Network+ and the ESPN App on connected devices. The game will be broadcast on the Akron-IMG Sports Network (radio). This is the first meeting between the schools on the gridiron. UA upset Big Ten West champion Northwestern, in Evanston, Ill. Because the season opener at Nebraska (Big Ten) was cancelled due to lightning, the Zips scheduled a game at South Carolina (SEC) for the end of the season [Dec. 1]. Playing three Power 5 teams in one season will be a program first. BAGGETT NAMED TO GOOGLE CLOUD ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT TEAM Safety Jamal Baggett (Oak Park, Ill.) has been named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Google Cloud Academic All-District 5 football team. A participant in all 10 games, Baggett has played primarily on special teams, working with the punt and kickoff return units. Baggett earned a bachelor s degree in sport management with a minor in marketing in May He is pursuing a master s degree in sport science with an emphasis on coaching. In the past three-plus seasons, they were a part of the re-building process, helping the Zips to at least five wins [2015 (8), 2016 (5), 2017 (7), 2018 (4) = 24 total] each year. As a redshirt freshman in 2017, the three-star recruit took over the quarterback reigns and started the last five games, leading Akron to appearances in the MAC Championship game and the Boca Raton Bowl. In 10 games, Nelson was 70-of-140 for 989 yards and eight touchdowns. He rushed 95 times for 198 yards and a touchdown. In the win against Morgan State, Nelson went 16-of-26 for 232 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for 42 yards. In the stunning win at Northwestern, Nelson went 17-of-28 for 277 yards and two touchdowns. He was named to the Davey O Brien Great 8 list for week 3. At Iowa State, Nelson went 12-of-28 for 153 yards and a touchdown. He was also the Zips rushing leader with 15 carries for 56 yards. Against Miami, Nelson went 19-of-35 for 203 yards and a touchdown while leading the Zips in rushing with 30 yards on 14 carries. At Buffalo, he went 12-of-29 for 115 yards while rushing for 37 yards. In the win at Kent State, Nelson went 19-of-35 for 219 yards and a touchdown. He was also the Zips leading rusher with a career-high 90 yards on 17 rushes, including a career-long 55-yard run. Nelson tied the game at in the third quarter with a 55-yard touchdown run, forcing overtime. In overtime, Nelson threw an eight-yard TD pass to sophomore Andre Williams. In the win over Central Michigan, Nelson went for 149 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed 10 times for 23 yards. Against Northern Illinois, Nelson went 18-for-26 for a season-high 299 yards and two touchdowns. He threw for 238 yards in the first half alone. Nelson missed the game at Eastern Michigan with an injury. Against Bowling Green, Nelson returned to the starting line-up. He went 12-of-28 for 148 yards but was held to negative rushing yards. In nine games, Nelson is 135-of-262 for 1,795 yards and 11 touchdowns. He has rushed for 290 yards and a touchdown on 112 carries. Nelson ranks No. 14 in UA career passing yards with 2,784. Nelson is backed up by redshirt freshman Alex Ramart (Richmond, Texas), who sat out last year as a true freshman. In the win over Morgan State, Ramart made his collegiate debut. He went 2-of-5 for five yards. Against Miami, he played on the Zips final possession, rushing for five yards and attempting no passes. Against Northern Illinois, Ramart threw his first career touchdown pass in the third quarter. He connected with Kwadarrius Smith for a six-yard TD. He went 3-for-12 for 27 yards and a touchdown. In the win over Morgan State, Edwards led the Zips with 109 yards, marking the second 100-yard rushing performance of his career. He had 17 carries and two touchdowns on the day. Additionally, Edwards had two receptions for 22 yards. He finished the game with a team-best 131 all-purpose yards. In the stunning win at Northwestern, Edwards led UA with 53 yards on 14 carries. At Iowa State, he rushed 12 times for 23 yards. Against Miami, Edwards rushed six times for four yards. At Buffalo, he led the Zips with 55 yards. In the win at Kent State, Edwards rushed 13 times for 39 yards. In the win over Central Michigan, Edwards led all rushers with a career-high 112 yards and a touchdown, eclipsing the 100-yard rushing mark for the third time in his career and first time this season. In the stunning win at Northwestern, he had eight tackles, a TFL for a loss of four yards, two break-ups, and a hurry. At Iowa State, Davis had eight tackles, including seven solo stops, a five-yard sack, and a forced fumble. Against Miami, he had six tackles. At Buffalo, Davis had five tackles and a break-up. At Iowa State, sophomore WR Nate Stewart had a 26-yard kickoff return, the first return of his collegiate career. At Buffalo, he had a 17-yard return. At Buffalo, freshman WR Jeremiah Knight (Jefferson, Ohio) returned the first punts of his collegiate career. He had two returns for 14 yards. In the win over Central Michigan, Knight had a career-day on returns. He returned five punts for 31 yards, including a 16-yard return, the longest by any Zips this season. Knight also returned two kickoffs for 45 yards, including a 29-yard return, the first of his young career. Against Northern Illinois, Knight had two kickoff returns for 39 yards, including a 22-yard return. At Eastern Michigan, Knight scored his first collegiate touchdown in the second quarter with a 70-yard punt return. The last time UA returned a punt for a TD was in 2016 as JoJo Natson returned a punt 79 yards at Buffalo ( ). Knight also had two kickoff returns for 37 yards against the Eagles. Against Bowling Green, he had three kickoff returns for 33 yards. This fall, Knight is Akron s top punt returner with nine returns for 117 yards and a touchdown. His 70- yard kickoff return is the longest by a Zip this fall. He is also is the top kickoff returner with 164 yards on nine returns. In the win at Kent State, freshman TE Maverick Wolfley had a 13-yard kickoff return, his first. ON THE SIDELINES THERE IS NO PLACE LIKE HOME Akron is its 10th season in 2018 on campus at InfoCision Stadium Summa Field. The Zips have a record at the venue, including 2-3 in Attendance from each of the six Zips home games in 2017 ranks among the Top 15 best attended games since the stadium opened in The Zips average attendance (9,232) ranked No. 2 nationally in the NCAA s list of largest increase in attendance from the previous season. The 30,000-seat stadium features 17 suites, state-of-the-art video board, and 80,000 square feet of academic space used daily by all University students. Additionally, the Sport Science and Wellness Education Department conducts classes on two levels, and the University s Alumni Association resides there as well. ZIPS IN THE COMMUNITY While most students were enjoying their summers at home, several members of the football team remained in Akron for the summer and putting their free time to good use. They combined to work on a community service project each week with a goal of 1,000 volunteer hours. Among the projects they worked were: filled orders at the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank, diced onions and weeded flower gardens at the Haven of Rest, and taught children at Camp Learn-A-Lot. This fall the Zips will continue weekly visits to Akron Children s Hospital on Fridays before home games. 14

16 ZIPS IN THE NFL CRYSTAL CLINIC WAGON WHEEL CHALLENGE Akron visited Kent State for the Crystal Clinic Orthopaedic Center Wagon Wheel Challenge. The 14-sport rivalry series between Akron and Kent State is based on a time-honored competition for an historic wooden wagon wheel trophy awarded originally in 1945 to the winner of the annual Akron-Kent State football game. Akron has won the last four Wagon Wheel football games. Since the academic year, the rivalry was broadened to include 14 NCAA varsity sports, with victories in each sport adding one point to the challenge standings. 18 TERRY BOWDEN Head Coach Co-Offensive Coordinator Seventh Season at Akron 25th Season Overall West Virginia 78 The Dean of all Mid-American Conference coaches with 171 career wins, Akron s Terry Bowden is in his seventh season in 2018 at the helm of the UA program. He was named the Zips 27th all-time head coach on Dec. 22, 2011, but he is just the seventh person to hold the position since Owning a record over a 24-year collegiate coaching career, Bowden ranks sixth nationally among active Division I head coaches in career wins (171). Bowden has been responsible for miraculous turnarounds almost everywhere he has coached and has once again done it at The University of Akron. In 2017, the Zips (7-7 overall, 6-2 MAC) soared to first place in the MAC East with huge victories over Ohio and Kent State to claim the division title and a spot in the MAC Championship game for the second time in program history and first time since Akron also advanced to an FBS bowl for the second time in three years, another program first. After opening MAC play at 3-0 for the first time, UA went on to win five home games at InfoCision Stadium Summa Field, the most in a single season since the stadium opened in The Zips won their third consecutive Wagon Wheel (and fourth in last five years) over rival Kent State. Four Zips earned All-MAC recognition with Ulysees Gilbert III capturing first-team honors for the second consecutive year. Alvin Davis, Jr., garnered second-team All- MAC honors. Tra Von Chapman and Jamal Davis II were third-team All-MAC honorees. In 2016, Bowden led UA to a 5-7 overall record, finishing just one play away from back-to-back bowl appearances. The Zips won their second consecutive Wagon Wheel (and third in last four years) over rival Kent State. Akron led the MAC in punt returns (17.53) which also ranked third nationally. In 2015, Bowden guided the Zips to an 8-5 overall record and a second-place finish in the MAC (5-3) East en route to the program s first winning season and bowl appearance since Ranked No. 2 nationally by Phil Steele as the Most Improved Team, Akron captured its first-ever bowl victory in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) era (since 1987) with a win over Utah State in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl on Dec. 22. UA won the 500th game in program history with a victory at Louisiana on Sept. 26, 2015, while closing out the season with five consecutive wins. The Zips shut out rival Kent State, 20-0, in the home finale to regain possession of the coveted Wagon Wheel. The eight wins on the season were the most in the FBS era. In 2014, Bowden guided the Zips to a 5-7 overall for the second consecutive season. With 10 victories over the last two seasons, the Zips totaled more wins than the previous three seasons combined. The offense, which was conducted in a hurry-up no-huddle style, was led by QB Dalton Williams, who set the program s single-season record for touchdown passes (25) and pass completions (326-for-522), while compiling the third most passing yards (3,387) in a season in school history. Bowden, who served as a studio analyst and color commentator with ABC Sports college football for 10 years, was the head coach at Auburn from and spent the three seasons prior to coming to Akron at Division II North Alabama. Bowden was an assistant coach at Akron in 1986 under then Zips head coach Gerry Faust. In 2013, Bowden led UA to its highest win total since 2008 by going 5-7 overall and 4-4 against the MAC, as well as ending the year by winning three straight and four of its last five games. The Zips went 3-3 at home, including a win over Toledo in the season finale and a 16-7 victory over neighborhood rival Kent State to regain possession of the coveted wooden Wagon Wheel. As a student-athlete at West Virginia, Bowden lettered two years as a running back ( ), held a 3.65 grade-point average in accounting, the highest GPA on the football team, and graduated Magna Cum Laude. He did post graduate work at Oxford University in England, and earned a Juris Doctorate from the Florida State School of Law in 1982, while a graduate assistant coach with the Seminoles. 18

For the first time in Akron football history, the Zips defeated a Big Ten opponent as Akron held on to a victory over Northwestern on Saturday evening at Ryan Field. The Zips only managed to gain 123 yards of total offense in the first half, but the next 30 minutes proved to be the game changer. Akron (2-1) Iowa State (1-2) AMES, Iowa Akron fell on the road to Big 12 opponent Iowa State on Saturday afternoon at MidAmerican Energy Field at Jack Trice Stadium. It was a closely fought battle throughout as the Akron (2-1) defense gave the Iowa State (1-2) offense trouble all game. Iowa State led by a touchdown at the break (17-10), and added three second-half field goals for their first win of the season. Iowa State outscored Akron 9-3 in the final 30 minutes of play.
