In 2016, Buffalo senior RB Jordan Johnson rushed for a school record 282 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Bulls to a win over Akron in Mid-American Conference action on a rainy Thursday evening at UB Stadium. Despite two touchdowns from senior WR JoJo Natson and two field goals from redshirt sophomore PK Tom O Leary, the Zips committed three turnovers and could not catch up to the Bulls on the scoreboard. Natson led the Zips receiving efforts with five catches for 53 yards and a touchdown. Sophomore RB Van Edwards was the top rusher with 56 yards on 14 carries. Junior QB Thomas Woodson was 18-of-42 for 178 yards and one touchdown. Defensively, freshman CB Alvin Davis led the Zips with eight tackles, including six solo stops. The last time at InfoCision Stadium, the Akron Zips posted their sixth win of the 2015 season, becoming bowl eligible for just the second time in school history (as an FBS program) and first time since 2005, with a Mid-American Conference win. Sophomore QB Thomas Woodson went 17-of-30 for 258 yards and a career-high four touchdowns. Senior RB Donnell Alexander led all rushers with a career-high 143 yards and a career-best two touchdowns as a Zip. MAC PREDICTIONS For the second consecutive year, Akron was selected to finish fourth in the Mid-American Conference East Division this fall by both the media and the 12 head coaches. Defending East champion Akron earned 74 points. Ohio was picked first, followed by Buffalo, Miami, and Akron. Bowling Green and Kent State rounded out the picks. In the West Division, Northern Illinois was selected first, followed by Toledo, Western Michigan and Eastern Michigan. Central Michigan and Ball State rounded out the predictions. OFFENSE NELSON TO LEAD QUARTERBACKS Sophomore QB Kato Nelson (Hollywood, Fla.) returns to lead the Zips for the second consecutive season. As a redshirt freshman in 2017, the three-star recruit took over the quarterback reigns and started the last five games, leading Akron to appearances in the MAC Championship game and the Boca Raton Bowl. In 10 games, Nelson was 70-of-140 for 989 yards and eight touchdowns. He rushed 95 times for 198 yards and a touchdown. In the win against Morgan State, Nelson went 16-of-26 for 232 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for 42 yards. In the stunning win at Northwestern, Nelson went 17-of-28 for 277 yards and two touchdowns. He was named to the Davey O Brien Great 8 list for week 3. At Iowa State, Nelson went 12-of-28 for 153 yards and a touchdown. He was also the Zips rushing leader with 15 carries for 56 yards. Against Miami, Nelson went 19-of-35 for 203 yards and a touchdown while leading the Zips in rushing with 30 yards on 14 carries. After four games, Nelson is 64-of-117 for 865 yards and seven touchdowns. He also has 165 yards rushing on 53 carries. In the stunning win at Northwestern, Edwards led UA with 53 yards on 14 carries. At Iowa State, he rushed 12 times for 23 yards. Against Miami, Edwards rushed six times for four yards. WR Kwadarrius Smith Biletnikoff Award Preseason Watch List After four games, Edwards is the Zips leading rusher with 189 yards and two touchdowns on 49 carries. Redshirt junior Deltron Sands (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), who suffered a season-ending injury last fall, had 173 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries in 10 games. In the win over Morgan State, Sands had four carries for 18 yards and a two-yard reception. In the stunning win at Northwestern, he had three carries for 14 yards. At Iowa State, Sands rushed twice for seven yards. Freshman Devanier Floyd (Akron, Ohio) made his collegiate debut in the win over Morgan State. He had two carries for four yards. NEW RECEIVING CORPS With the graduation of A.J. Coney and Austin Wolf, two redshirt seniors are the only familiar faces among the wide receivers. Top returning starter is redshirt senior Kwadarrius Smith (Orlando, Fla.), who had 34 receptions for a team-high 726 yards and a team-best seven touchdowns in He averaged 21.4 yards per reception and 51.9 yards per game. Smith was the Zips scoring leader with 42 points. In the win over Morgan State, Smith had just one reception a 35-yard catch for a touchdown in the first quarter. In the stunning win at Northwestern, Smith led UA with 90 yards on six receptions. He also rushed twice for six yards. With his only reception on the day at Iowa State, a 13-yard catch at 9:30 in the fourth quarter, Smith hit the 1,000-yard receiving milestone of his career. Against Miami, he had four receptions for 55 yards and two rushes. After four games, Smith is second in receiving with 193 yards and a touchdown on 12 receptions. He now has 1,066 career receiving yards. Redshirt sophomore Jonah Morris, who transferred from Indiana, made a stunning debut as a Zip. In the win over Morgan State, he led the receivers with four catches for 94 yards and a touchdown. In the stunning win at Northwestern, Morris had three receptions for 51 yards, including a 43-yard catch. At Iowa State, he had three receptions for 37 yards. After four games, Morris has 182 yards and a touchdown on 10 receptions. Sophomore Andre Williams (Orlando, Fla.), who played in 12 games as a true freshman, earned his first appearance in the starting line-up in the win over Morgan State. He finished with four receptions for 46 yards and a touchdown. His 32-yard TD was just the second in his young career. In 2017, four of five linemen returned to their starting roles. The 2018 offensive line will be anchored by senior RG Kyle Ritz (Willoughby, Ohio), who has started 35 career games, and junior LT Trevor Brown (Clinton, Md.), who has 19 starts. Entering his senior season is S Alvin Davis (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), who finished second on defense in 2017 with 83 tackles, two break-ups, a TFL, an interception, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. In the win over Morgan State, Davis had three tackles, a forced fumble, an interception, and a breakup. The interception was the second of his career; the forced fumble was a career first. In the stunning win at Northwestern, Davis returned two interceptions for touchdowns (97 yards and 50 yards) in the second half, propelling UA to the come-from-behind road victory. Davis 97-yard interception tied for second-best in program history. It was the first multi-interception and multi-touchdown game of his collegiate career. Davis finished the game with 10 tackles, two interceptions for 147 return yards, and two touchdowns en route to Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week, Chuck Bednarik National Defensive Player of the Week, MAC Defensive Player of the Week, and Summa Health Student-Athlete of the Week honors. He also connected on the PAT after UA s touchdown, finishing with seven points on the day, en route to MAC Specialist of the Week honors for the second time this season. After four games, Gasser is the Zips scoring leader, connecting on 7-of-9 field goals and 10-of-10 PAT for 31 points. He has punted 18 times for 710 yards (39.4 average). In the season opener at Nebraska, sophomore PK Jerry Fitschen (Orange, Calif.) kicked off for the second of his young career, and the ball went a career-long 65 yards for a touchback. The game was then delayed and eventually canceled due to lightning and thunderstorms. In the win over Morgan State, Fitschen kicked off eight times for 483 yards, averaging 60.4 yards. He also tacked on his first extra point on Akron s final touchdown of the game. In the stunning win at Northwestern, Fitschen kicked off eight times for 486 yards (60.8 average). At Iowa State, he kicked off four times for 247 yards (61.8 average). Against Miami, Fitschen kicked off four times for 258 yards (64.5 average) with two touchbacks. After four games, Fitschen has kicked off 24 times for 1,424 yards (59.3 average) with eight touchbacks. For the fourth consecutive season, senior Kyle Foster (Parkersburg, W.Va.) returns to handle the holding. He has been named to the Peter Mortell Holder of the Year Watch List for the third time. The Zips must replace four-year long snapper Michael Buddenberg, who holds the record for most games played (51) in program history. The Zips have a record at the venue, including 1-1 in Attendance from each of the six Zips home games in 2017 ranks among the Top 15 best attended games since the stadium opened in The Zips average attendance (9,232) ranked No. 2 nationally in the NCAA s list of largest increase in attendance from the previous season. The 30,000-seat stadium features 17 suites, state-of-the-art video board, and 80,000 square feet of academic space used daily by all University students. Additionally, the Sport Science and Wellness Education Department conducts classes on two levels, and the University s Alumni Association resides there as well. ZIPS IN THE COMMUNITY While most students were enjoying their summers at home, several members of the football team remained in Akron for the summer and putting their free time to good use. They combined to work on a community service project each week with a goal of 1,000 volunteer hours. Among the projects they worked were: filled orders at the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank, diced onions and weeded flower gardens at the Haven of Rest, and taught children at Camp Learn-A-Lot. This fall the Zips will continue weekly visits to Akron Children s Hospital on Fridays before home games. GILBERT NAMED RECIPIENT OF DENNISON SCHOLARSHIP Senior LB Ulysees Gilbert III was named the inaugural recipient of the Jim and Sue Dennison Scholarship prior to the Homecoming game on Oct. 6. The scholarship will be awarded annually to a student-athlete leader on the Zips football team who displays Positive Mental Attitude, a trademark Dennison toughness. It will go to a student-athlete who believes in team above self and presents himself as an example for teammates to follow. 14 AMATO RETIRES IN OFF-SEASON On February 26, 2018, associate head coach and defensive coordinator Chuck Amato decided to retire from coaching. In 2017, the 71-year old legend completed his sixth season at Akron and his 45th year in the collegiate coaching ranks, which included serving as head coach at North Carolina State and as a long-time assistant coach at Florida State. 17 TERRY BOWDEN Head Coach Co-Offensive Coordinator Seventh Season at Akron 25th Season Overall West Virginia 78 The Dean of all Mid-American Conference coaches with 171 career wins, Akron s Terry Bowden is in his seventh season in 2018 at the helm of the UA program. He was named the Zips 27th all-time head coach on Dec. 22, 2011, but he is just the seventh person to hold the position since Owning a record over a 24-year collegiate coaching career, Bowden ranks sixth nationally among active Division I head coaches in career wins (171). Bowden has been responsible for miraculous turnarounds almost everywhere he has coached and has once again done it at The University of Akron. In 2017, the Zips (7-7 overall, 6-2 MAC) soared to first place in the MAC East with huge victories over Ohio and Kent State to claim the division title and a spot in the MAC Championship game for the second time in program history and first time since Akron also advanced to an FBS bowl for the second time in three years, another program first. After opening MAC play at 3-0 for the first time, UA went on to win five home games at InfoCision Stadium Summa Field, the most in a single season since the stadium opened in The Zips won their third consecutive Wagon Wheel (and fourth in last five years) over rival Kent State. Four Zips earned All-MAC recognition with Ulysees Gilbert III capturing first-team honors for the second consecutive year. Alvin Davis, Jr., garnered second-team All- MAC honors. Tra Von Chapman and Jamal Davis II were third-team All-MAC honorees. In 2016, Bowden led UA to a 5-7 overall record, finishing just one play away from back-to-back bowl appearances. The Zips won their second consecutive Wagon Wheel (and third in last four years) over rival Kent State. Akron led the MAC in punt returns (17.53) which also ranked third nationally. In 2015, Bowden guided the Zips to an 8-5 overall record and a second-place finish in the MAC (5-3) East en route to the program s first winning season and bowl appearance since Ranked No. 2 nationally by Phil Steele as the Most Improved Team, Akron captured its first-ever bowl victory in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) era (since 1987) with a win over Utah State in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl on Dec. 22. UA won the 500th game in program history with a victory at Louisiana on Sept. 26, 2015, while closing out the season with five consecutive wins. The Zips shut out rival Kent State, 20-0, in the home finale to regain possession of the coveted Wagon Wheel. The eight wins on the season were the most in the FBS era. In 2014, Bowden guided the Zips to a 5-7 overall for the second consecutive season. With 10 victories over the last two seasons, the Zips totaled more wins than the previous three seasons combined. The offense, which was conducted in a hurry-up no-huddle style, was led by QB Dalton Williams, who set the program s single-season record for touchdown passes (25) and pass completions (326-for-522), while compiling the third most passing yards (3,387) in a season in school history. Bowden, who served as a studio analyst and color commentator with ABC Sports college football for 10 years, was the head coach at Auburn from and spent the three seasons prior to coming to Akron at Division II North Alabama. Bowden was an assistant coach at Akron in 1986 under then Zips head coach Gerry Faust. In 2013, Bowden led UA to its highest win total since 2008 by going 5-7 overall and 4-4 against the MAC, as well as ending the year by winning three straight and four of its last five games. The Zips went 3-3 at home, including a win over Toledo in the season finale and a 16-7 victory over neighborhood rival Kent State to regain possession of the coveted wooden Wagon Wheel. As a student-athlete at West Virginia, Bowden lettered two years as a running back ( ), held a 3.65 grade-point average in accounting, the highest GPA on the football team, and graduated Magna Cum Laude. Following a three-hour delay for lightning and thunderstorms, Saturday s season opening, non-conference football game between Akron and host Nebraska has been cancelled, school officials from Nebraska and Akron announced. In the opening kickoff, Akron sophomore PK Jerry Fitschen (Orange, Calif.) went a career-long 65 yards on the second kickoff of his young career. For the first time in Akron football history, the Zips defeated a Big Ten opponent as Akron held on to a victory over Northwestern on Saturday evening at Ryan Field. Whatever Zips head coach Terry Bowden said to the team at halftime worked as the Akron offense nearly doubled its yardage output in the third quarter. The Zips only managed to gain 123 yards of total offense in the first half, but the next 30 minutes proved to be the game changer.
