Behind strong games from Akina Wellere, Aaliyah Lewis and Jade Walker, the St. John s women s basketball held off a late push by Georgetown to come away with a win over the Hoyas Sunday afternoon. Wellere, who had struggled from long distance over the past four games, found her rhythm early and seemed unstoppable at times. The sophomore finished with a team-high 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting. The Chicago, Ill., native entered the game just two for her last seven from behind the arc, but that didn t stop her from letting it fly on Sunday as she connected on four of her six tries from deep. Lewis added 17 points, eight assists and three steals. The senior guard did most of her damage from the charity stripe, connecting on nine of her 16 attempts from the line. Those eight dimes bring Lewis season tally to 165, which are tied with Nadirah McKenith s 165 during the campaign for the seventh-most in a single season at St. John s. Walker was limited to just 26 minutes of action but still managed to chip in 14 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the floor. The senior also had six rebounds, one block and one steal. Jordan Agustus, who played a career-high 22 minutes, provided six points and three rebounds off the bench. The sophomore also rejected a pair of shots. For the game, St. John s (17-9, 9-6 BIG EAST) shot 51.1 percent from the floor, knocking down 24 of its 47 tries. Additionally, the Johnnies hit five of their nine attempts from three point territory and held Georgetown (15-9, 7-7 BIG EAST) without a made triple. In November, the BIG EAST annoucned that the St. John s game at Creighton on Feb. 19 (6:30 p.m. ET) has been elevated from BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN) coverage to FOX Sports Regional Networks (FSN). The Johnnies travel to Omaha, Neb., to take on the Blue Jays in a rematch of last year s BIG EAST Championship game, in which the Red Storm captured their first conference championship since The game was previously scheduled to air on BEDN, however it will now air on the FSN family of networks, which is represented by the YES Network in the New York Metropolitan area. In addition to the game at Creighton, the Johnnies have had three other games on television so far this year, beginning with the Red Storm s BIG EAST opener at Seton Hall on Dec. 30. The following week, St. John s took on Xavier on CBS Sports Network on Jan. 2 in Cincinnati. Last week s game at Georgetown was broadcast live on FOX Sports 1. All St. John s non-conference home games were streamed live on ESPN3, while all nontelevised BIG EAST games will be streamed on the BIG EAST Digital Network. REPLACING GREATNESS Last season, Red Storm was tasked with replacing four-year standout Amber Thompson, who graduated as the program s all-time leading rebounder with 1,084. This season, the Johnnies will be without two of the most prolific players in program history with the graduation of Aliyyah Handford and Danaejah Grant. Handford amassed 2,058 points during her time in Queens, the only women s basketball player in St. John s history to eclipse the 2,000-point mark. The Newark, N.J., native, who was a three-time First Team All-BIG EAST selection, led the Red Storm to four postseason appearances. As a senior, Handford averaged 18.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.3 steals and 3.0 assists during a three-day stretch that culminated with the program s first BIG EAST Championship since For her efforts, Handford was named the Tournament s Most Outstanding Player. An All-BIG EAST Second Team honoree as a junior and a First Team All-BIG EAST selection as a senior, Grant saw action in three postseasons with the Red Storm, including a pair of trips to the NCAA Tournament. In her final collegiate game against Auburn in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament this past March, Grant scored a game-high 25 and collected six rebounds to lead the Johnnies. RED STORM WELCOMES TWO CLASS OF 2021 SIGNEES St. John s received two National Letters of Intent from the Class of 2021 last month as guard Qadashah Hoppie and forward Kayla Charles signed on to continue their academic and athletic careers with the Red Storm. 15 Joe Tartamella was introduced as the eighth head coach in the history of the St. John s women s basketball program on April 27, In his four years at the helm of the Red Storm, Tartamella has continued the tradition of success that he helped to implement as a member of the coaching staff from In March of 2016, Tartamella returned the Red Storm to a place of prominence that the program had not experienced in nearly three decades. Following three magical days in Chicago, the Johnnies claimed their first BIG EAST Title since The road to the championship proved difficult, as the Red Storm had to face off against top-seeded DePaul on its home court in the semifinals less than a week after the Blue Demons wrapped up the best regular season in the history of the new BIG EAST with a 16-2 mark. Trailing by double digits in the second half, the Johnnies stormed back to take the lead in the final period, knocking down their final 11 shots from the floor and securing a spot in the BIG EAST Championship game for the second time in three years. In the final, the Red Storm put forth its best defensive effort of the season, limiting Creighton to just 37 points and claiming the BIG EAST title. After its miraculous title run, the Red Storm secured a berth in the NCAA Tournament for the sixth time in the last seven seasons and earned a postseason bid for the ninth-straight campaign. Two of Tartamella s players were recognized by the BIG EAST following the season, as super seniors Aliyyah Handford and Danaejah Grant were both named to the allconference first team. In addition, Handford became the first player in St. John s history to take home BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year honors after finishing second in the conference in steals on the season.
