Series tied IRISH TO HOST BERTICELLI TOURNAMENT No. 2 Notre Dame will play host to the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament this weekend at Alumni Stadium. Indiana will take on Kentucky in Friday s first match (5 p.m. ET) followed by Notre Dame against Dartmouth at approximately 7:30 p.m. The tournament will conclude on Sunday with Indiana versus Dartmouth at 11:30 a.m. and Notre Dame versus Kentucky at 2 p.m. WatchND.tv will have a free broadcast of both Notre Dame matches. A BIT ON MIKE BERTICELLI This is the 12th year that the Fighting Irish have hosted a tournament in honor of their former head coach Mike Berticelli. Berticelli coached the Irish from before passing away suddenly in January of Berticelli posted a record during his 10- year stint at Notre Dame. He led the Irish to three NCAA tournament appearances (1993, 1994, 1996), including the program s first NCAA win in Berticelli guided Notre Dame to one Midwestern Collegiate Conference (MCC) regular-season title (1993) and two MCC tournament crowns (1993 & 1994). He also steered Notre Dame to its first BIG EAST tournament title in TOURNAMENT HISTORY Notre Dame is all-time in the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament. The Irish have won the event five times (2003, 2005, 2008, 2010, 2012). The tournament was not held last season due to scheduling conflicts. Notre Dame won the 2012 event by capturing wins over Oregon State (1-0) and Akron (3-1). This year marks the 11th time th has participated in the tournament. The Hoosiers have won the event five times (2004, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2011). Bradley won the inaugural event in Kentucky is making its first appearance in the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament, while Dartmouth finished second at the 2008 event. All-time tournament standings on Pg. 4 CHAD RILEY RETURNS Dartmouth head coach Chad Riley played at Notre Dame from and was an assistant coach for the Fighting Irish from Riley is in his second season at the helm of the Big Green program. Riley played in 78 matches with the Fighting Irish and tallied 10 goals and 32 assists. Clark guided the Big Green to three Ivy League titles and an overall record of (.646). Dartmouth reached the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Championship under Clark in 1990 and Clark left for Stanford following the 1993 season and then came to Notre Dame in BATTLING THE BIG GREEN Friday will be the third meeting all-time between Notre Dame and Dartmouth. Both previous encounters took place at Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish won the first showdown, 2-1, during the 2008 Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament. The Big Green clipped the Irish, 2-1 in overtime, during the second round of the 2010 NCAA tournament. THE SERIES Notre Dame has won all four previous meetings with Kentucky. This will be the first showdown between the two programs since a 2-0 Irish win in 1992 in Lexington, Ky. Notre Dame also claimed victories over Kentucky in 1982 (3-2), 1983 (4-0) and 1991 (2-0). The 1983 and 1991 contests took place at Notre Dame. Fighting Irish head coach Bobby Clark has never faced Kentucky. IRISH CLAIM ANOTHER IU CLASSIC TITLE Notre Dame opened its season last weekend at the adidas/iu Credit Union Classic in Bloomington, Ind. The Irish topped No. 12 Marquette, 2-1, in the opener. Connor Klekota netted the equalizer in the 28th minute and Leon Brown tallied the game winner in the 66th minute. The Fighting Irish and No. 9 Georgetown played to a scoreless draw on Sunday. Notre Dame and Indiana finished as tournament co-champions. It was the third straight IU Classic title for the Irish, who won the event outright in 2012 and SENIOR CLASS CANDIDATES Fighting Irish right back Luke Mishu and goalkeeper Patrick Wall have been named candidates for the Senior CLASS Award. They are among 30 players up for the prestigious accolade. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence community, classroom, character and competition. The candidate list will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans. WELCOME BACK The Fighting Irish welcomed back nine starters and 72 percent of their goal production (35 of 47) from Junior midfielder Patrick Hodan is the leading returning scorer after totaling 11 goals and five assists last season. Those numbers only trailed first-team All-American Harrison Shipp, a current rookie standout with the Chicago Fire, for team-high honors. IRISH PICKED TO WIN ACC TITLE Notre Dame is the Atlantic Coast Conference s preseason favorite, according to a vote of the league s 12 head coaches. The Irish were named by six coaches as this year s team to beat, followed by Virginia with three first-place votes, North Carolina with two, and Louisville with one. BESLER ON MAC HERMANN TROPHY WATCH LIST Senior midfielder Nick Besler is among 32 players on the watch list for the MAC Hermann Trophy, the most prestigious individual award in NCAA soccer. Leon Brown (F), Luke Mishu (D), Andrew O Malley (D) and Patrick Wall (GK) have returned for one final campaign with the Irish. Brown and O Malley scored Notre Dame s two goals in the 2013 national title game. Both Mishu and O Malley are in their third season as starters on the Notre Dame backline, while Wall has played every possible minute in goal over the last two seasons after splitting the starting duty in Brown has competed in 65 career matches, which are the most for any current Notre Dame player. He has eight goals and eight assists during his career. A WALL IN GOAL After splitting time as a starter in 2012, Patrick Wall played every minute last season and posted 10 shutouts along with a 0.71 goals-against average and a.804 save percentage. Wall played all 200 minutes last weekend at the IU Classic. He made five saves and allowed just one goal. Wall boasts a career record of (.847) with 14 clean sheets. SUCCESSFUL STRETCH Notre Dame is (.813) over the past three seasons. The Fighting Irish went last season and won their first national title. Notre Dame tied Maryland for the 2013 ACC regular-season title. In 2012, the Irish went and won the BIG EAST Championship. The Irish earned the No. 1 overall seed for the 2012 NCAA Championship. ALUMNI STADIUM ADVANTAGE Notre Dame is (.841) at home over the past two seasons. The Fighting Irish are (.731) at Alumni Stadium since it opened in PIPELINE TO THE PROS Notre Dame has produced 15 MLS SuperDraft picks since 2008 and the Fighting Irish have had 22 SuperDraft picks since Bobby Clark became head coach in That list does not include Harrison Shipp, who was signed by the Chicago Fire in January as a Homegrown Player. Grant Van De Casteele was selected by the Colorado Rapids in the first round of the MLS SuperDraft. Matt Besler (Sporting KC) is the program s most decorated alum. He was a first-round pick in 2009 and has gone on to earn three MLS All-Star nods (2011, 2013, ). Besler was named the 2012 MLS Defender of the Year and he has appeared on the MLS Best XI team twice (2012, 2013). He also captained Sporting KC to the 2013 MLS Cup. Besler, the older brother of Irish senior midfielder Nick Besler, started all four matches for the United States at the FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Justin Morrow (Toronto FC) was an MLS All-Star in 2012 when he was playing with San Jose. Dillon Powers was named the 2013 MLS Rookie of the Year.
