Steve Scullen HEAD COACH NIKO MEDVED THE NEW BULLDOG ON THE BLOCK Head coach Niko Medved took the reins of the Drake University men s basketball team on March 27, 2017 and has set a course to build the Bulldogs program using the same formula he has had success with throughout his career. Medved spent the previous four seasons transforming Furman University s basketball program into a Southern Conference Champion and was the 2017 Southern Conference Coach of the Year. Medved s Furman teams made back-toback postseason appearances, the first for the school in 40 years. Medved took over a seven-win team and built it into a 23-win program. Medved coached back-to-back SoCon Players of the Year in Stephen Croone and Devin Sibley, Jr. His recruiting at Furman produced immediate results with Sibley being named the SoCon Freshman of the Year in 2015 and a total of four student-athletes earning spots on the SoCon All- Freshman Team in the last three years. Prior to Furman, Medved spent six seasons as an assistant coach at Colorado State where he helped engineer a similar turnaround under Head Coach Tim Miles. A PLAYER S COACH I M HERE TO WIN At Colorado State, the program rebounded from a seven-win season to a postseason appearance two years later, a 20-win season in , and the first of back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances for the Rams. Medved's recruiting and coaching at Colorado State produced numerous standout players including 2013 honorable mention AP All-American and first-team All-Mountain West Conference choice Colton Iverson, 2013 Mountain West Conference Sixth Man of the Year Daniel Bejarano and five other all-conference performers. Before joining the staff at Colorado State, Medved spent a season as an assistant at the University of Minnesota under Dan Monson following seven seasons as an assistant at Furman, including serving as Furman's interim head coach in the spring of Medved began his career at the University of Minnesota in 1992, where he was a student manager and assistant. He also served as the associate head coach at Macalester College from and worked four years as an instructor at the prestigious Nike All-America camp. He completed his B.S. in kinesiology in 1997 and his master's in sport management in 1999, both from the University of Minnesota. Under head coach Niko Medved s leadership, Furman was one of only two Division I programs with no players transferring from the program during the last three years. 5 A WIN WOULD... Make Drake 12-8 overall and 6-1 to start the Valley season 6-1 or better for the first time since the season. Be Drake s third MVC road win of the season, its most since Be Drake s first win over UNI since Feb. 18, 2014 and first win in the McLeod Center since Feb. 18, 2009 Make Drake all time against UNI and snap a six-game skid. Be the 1,234th win in program history. A LOSS WOULD... Make Drake 11-9 this season and 5-2 in the Valley. Be Drake s seventh-straight loss to the Panthers. Make Drake all-time against UNI. COMBINED SUCCESS Drake s men s and women s teams are both on top of the MVC standings with a combined 11-1 MVC record. The women s team has won 28-straight conference games as of Jan. 11. The Bulldogs added to that tally by recording 20 assists and just seven turnovers in the 25-point win over Illinois State. Drake matched that with 20 assists on 23 made field goals in the loss at Valparaiso. Finally, in the win over Evansville, the team had 22 assists on 28 made field goals. The Bulldogs have recorded 17 or more assists in a game 11 times this season and a positive assist-to-turnover ratio in 13 games this season. In the team s last seven games, 66.3 percent of the team s baskets have been assisted and the team has had a positive assist-to-turnover ratio in six of those games.
