SJSUSpartans.com SJSU-NEVADA HISTORY Nevada won both meetings with the Spartans last season, continuing its recent dominance over the Spartans. The Wolf Pack lead the all-time series but have won 17 of the last 18 meetings and 25 of the last 27. SJSU s last win over Nevada came on Feb. 18, 2014 in Reno. The last win against the Wolf Pack in San Jose came on Jan. 10, 2008 by a score of COMPARING AND CONTRASTING Nevada comes in undefeated in Mountain West play and has the league s second-highest scoring offense at 82.6 points per game. San José State is winless in league play and scores 65.0 points per game, ranking 11th in the Mountain West. SJSU s Ryan Welage ranks sixth among all MW players in points per game with Nevada has two players, Caleb Martin (19.0 ppg-2nd) and Jordan Caroline (17.0 ppg-9th) inside the league s top-10 in scoring. The Spartans have prided themselves all season long on being great rebounders and they have a plus-6.2 margin compared to Nevada s plus-2.1 margin. TWO SPARTANS KNOW IT CAN BE DONE Nevada has some serious ownage on San José State extending back decades, but current Spartans Jalen James and Brandon Mitchell were a part of SJSU s most recent win over the Wolf Pack on Feb. 18, In fact, it was James game-winning jumper with 1.8 seconds remaining that got the Spartans over the hump. It would turn out to be SJSU s only Mountain West win of the season. Nevada was nowhere near the power that it currently is this season, but was a respectable 12-15, 7-7 MW and the heavy favorite at home when James and the Spartans beat them. James, and Mitchell who played 11 minutes of that game, hope to find some similar magic on Wednesday night. SPARTANS ERASE BIG DEFICIT BUT LOSE TO AIR FORCE San José State trailed Air Force by as many as 18 points in the first half, but battled back to take multiple leads in the second period. The Spartans used their best shooting first half of the season (58.3 percent, 14-24) to climb out of the hole and trailed, 40-34, at halftime. SJSU trailed by two points with 2:58 remaining in the game, but an 8-0 run by Air Force aided by five missed free throws by SJSU allowed the Falcons to pull out the win in San Jose. SPARTANS COMMIT SEASON-LOW NINE TURNOVERS Despite a loss there were plenty of positives coming out of the game against Air Force. The most important one being SJSU s 15 assists to a season-low nine turnovers. The Spartans had turned the ball over 20 or more times in six straight games before giving it away 18 times at San Diego State (1/9). Then they cut the number in half against Air Force. SJSU s -6.4 turnover margin and its 17.8 giveaways per game rank last in all of NCAA Division I, but the Spartans now have something to build on in that department with the results from the last game. SJSU OUT-SHOOTS ANOTHER LEAGUE FOE San José State shot 47.1 percent (24-51) against the Falcons and held them to 41.1 percent (23-56) shooting. It is the fourth time in six games during Mountain West play that SJSU has finished with a better shooting percentage than the opponent. It s also the third time that the Spartans have made more field goals than their league foe and lost. In these game where SJSU out-shoots its opponent, it s generally turnovers and 3-point shooting that tilt the game in the opponents facebook.com/sjsuspartans 2

Multiple nagging injuries and some of the different rotations throughout the year have limited his playing time. But after what was perhaps San José State s worse loss of the season an beating at San Diego State James responded with one of his best games of the season against Air Force. He scored 13 points, had four assists, hit a pair of clutch 3-pointers and guided SJSU for a season-high 29 minutes. James started the game which made it his first time on the floor for the jump since Nov. 22, 2017 in a win over Idaho State. WELAGE JOINS 1,000-POINT CLUB With a pair of free throws with 4:12 remaining in the second half of the game at San Diego State Ryan Welage scored points 999 and 1,000. He became the 15th player in program history (108th season) and the first since Justin Graham in 2011 to reach the career milestone. Welage reached 1,000 points in his 77th game as a Spartan and with a minimum of 13 games remaining this season he could climb high on SJSU s all-time scoring list. 1. 1,767 - Ricky Berry (84 games) 2. 1,750 - Adrian Oliver (80 games) 3. 1,504 - Stu Inman (123 games) 4. 1,432 - Wally Rank (102 games) 5. 1,272 - Justin Graham (119 games) 6. 1,236 - Chris McNealy (81 games) 7. 1,173 - Coby Dietrick (72 games) 8. 1,139 - Terry Cannon (97 games) 9. 1,136 - Johnnie Skinner (73 games) 10. 1,125 - Ken Mickey (82 games) 11. 1,095 - Sid Williams (111 games) 12. 1,050 - S.T. Baumann came into the week prior to facing those teams as the league s most accurate 3-point shooter qualifying with at least four attempts per game. The opponents responded by locking him down to a combined six shots in the two games. But Baumann found a way to get his shots against Air Force, and they dropped. He finished 4-of-8 from the field including 3-of-6 from downtown and had 11 points. Baumann is now 15-of-24 (62.5 percent) from 3-point land during MW play. SPARTANS LET UNLV ESCAPE WITH OVERTIME WIN San José State went on a 12-2 run over the final 4:50 of regulation to force overtime against UNLV, but the Runnin Rebels prevailed for an win inside The Event Center. Ryan Welage scored nine of the 12 points during the run, and Noah Baumann hit a 3-pointer with 25 seconds left to give SJSU the lead for the first time since midway through the first half. The Spartans had chances to pull off the win in both regulation and overtime, but a few too many missed opportunities held them back from a third straight win over facebook.com/sjsuspartans 3

San Jose, Calif For the San Jose State University men s basketball team, its Saturday afternoon home game with Air Force was like a sandwich with a tasty filling surrounded on two sides by stale bread. Looking for their first conference win of the season, the Spartans wiped out an 18-point first-half deficit and led with just over nine minutes remaining, but lost to the Falcons (7-10, 1-4 Mountain West), 78-71, in a Mountain West conference contest. San Jose State (3-14, 0-6 Mountain West) had four players in double-figure scoring led by forward Ryan Welage with 17 points and a team-high 8 rebounds. Jalen James scored 13; Noah Baumann, 11; and Keith Fisher III, 10, for the Spartans. Despite trailing with 7:27 to go in the first half, San Jose State s best first-half field goal shooting of the season got the Spartans back into the game. San Jose State shot 58.3 percent in the first 20 minutes and trailed, 40-34, go into the intermission. The Spartans took their first lead of the game when Baumann nailed a pair of backto-back baskets, first a stop-and-pop shot from 13-feet on the left side, and then a top-of-the-key three-pointer that put the Spartans ahead with 16:14 to go for the team s biggest lead of the game. While Clarke hit 8-of-15 from the floor the Spartans (7-5, 0-1 MW) collectively finished the game shooting a season-low 29.2 percent (19-65) from the field. Nevada (12-2, 1-0 MW) led by as many as 14 in the first half, and outscored SJSU in the second period. Four Wolf Pack players finished in double-figure scoring, led by Marcus Marshall with 25 points. It was a physical game with players from both teams combining for five technical fouls. Jalen James received two technical fouls and was ejected at the 14:49 mark in the second half. When the dust settled from the sequence, four techs were handed out - two to Nevada players and two to James. Nevada held a lead at the time of the technical, and from there grew the lead to as large as 26 points during two different points in the remainder of the second half. Nevada s initial separation came when it built an eight-point advantage during a 6:25 Spartans scoring drought midway through the opening period. Brandon Clarke hit a spinning layup to end the drought and keep Nevada s lead to single-digits, From there Marshall and Jordan Caroline scored 12 straight points for the Wolf Pack which helped build a advantage by the 1:47 mark.
