She also just missed tying her career-high in scoring with 15 points against Mercer, just one shy of her season-best 16 she scored against USC Upstate. Western Carolina women s basketball showed the heart of a lion Thursday night in their gritty and heart-wrenching comeback attempt against Mercer falling in the Ramsey Center. The Bears may have taken the game but just might have woken a sleeping den of Catamounts as WCU put together their strongest and most solid performance of the season. In early January this Catamount team looks like they just found their roar against Mercer. Clawing back into the game after trailing at the half, Western Carolina outscored Mercer in each of the final two periods for a total of tying the game at 67 off a three-point shot by Jewel Smalls. The Catamounts did not score in double figures in any of the four periods and only hit 11 field goals in the game. Though Samford hit just four more field goals than the Western Carolina, connecting on 15, the Bulldogs benefitted from 18 trips to the free throw line hitting 15. Western Carolina had 18 turnovers in the game and shot just 26.2 percent from the field. The Catamounts did not have a player score in double figures.
