The Bearcats, on the season, are making their 10th postseason appearance and eighth in the last nine years. The Golden Panthers are this year and finished third in the Sun Belt East Division. The Bearcats have made five previous WNIT showings (including NWIT in 1981) and have a 2-6 record. The Bearcats allowed just.276 three-point shooting in their BIG EAST games while shooting.362 themselves. Karen Twehues shot a league-best.486 (34-70) from three in these games. UC s five freshmen have scored 46 percent of the points for the team and grabbed 47 percent of the rebounds. The Bearcats have averaged 18.5 offensive rebounds in the last six games. Micah Harvey is two assists away from tying Keely Feeman for third in UC history with 431. UC has taken 19.3 three-pointers per game and shot.284 in the last six games after averaging 10.1 attempts and making.390 in the first 22 games. The Bearcat roster features five freshmen and three sophomores, while FIU has four freshmen and two sophomores. FIU is and is making its 11th postseason appearance in the last 15 years. The Golden Panthers have won six of their last nine games and are 11-4 at home this year. Junior Lasma Jekabsone leads FIU, averaging 15.0 points, 10.4 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game. Bellman was named to the five-person All-Freshman Team after leading the Bearcats in rebounding and ranking second in points and steals.

She is the winningest coach in UC history. Pirtle was named C-USA Coach of the Year after the season. Cindy Russo (Old Dominion 75) At FIU: 27th year, (.707) Overall: 29th year, (.702) Russo has guided FIU to a string of 22-straight winning seasons, and at least 20 victories in 16 of the past 21 campaigns. She has led her teams to eight NCAA Tournaments and five postseason WNITs, in addition to winning eight regular-season conference titles and seven tournament crowns. UC S LAST GAME Cincinnati Pittsburgh March 4, 2006 Hartford, Conn BIG EAST Championship First Round Marcedes Walker and Mallorie Winn scored 21 points each to lead Pittsburgh to a win against UC in the first round of the 2006 BIG EAST Tournament. Shelly Bellman led UC with 22 points and a career-best six three-pointers. The Panthers shot 61 percent from the floor for the game and led by as many as 15 in the first half before taking a lead into halftime. Bellman came out firing in the second half, hitting three successive three-pointers during an 11-2 run that cut the lead to just four with 16:29 to play. Pitt answered with a 7-0 spurt. The Bearcats twice trimmed the lead to five, but a 7-0 Panther run got the lead back to double-digits. UC grabbed a season-low 27 rebounds and was outrebounded for the just the ninth time this season. The Bearcats allowed a season-high.612 shooting. UC took a season-high 21 three-pointers. Treasure Humphries scored in double-figures for the 20th time, Michelle Jones for the 16th time and Bellman for the 14th time. TOP TURNAROUNDS: The Bearcats have won eight more games this season than they did last year, which ranks as one of the top turnarounds in the nation this year. Saint Joseph s leads the list at +13. In UC annals, it ranks third behind a nine-game swing in that produced UC s first postseason appearance, and an amazing 12-game turnaround by Laurie Pirtle in her second year, Best Turnarounds in Div. Saint Joseph's Iona William & Mary IUPUI Wichita State South Carolina Cincinnati Elon Providence HIGHLY TOUTED: The Bearcat roster features five freshmen Shelly Bellman, Michelle Jones, Angel Morgan, Kahla Roudebush and Jill Stephens who make up what was ranked as the 10th best recruiting class in 2005 by the All-Star Girls Report. The class has lived up to its billing as the five have accounted for 45 percent of UC s points and 47 percent of the rebounds. Against USF they scored 60 of UC s 89 points and all five have started at least three games. Bellman has started each game and leads the Bearcats in rebounding and is second in points and steals. She has scored in double-figures in 14 games, exploded for 28 against St. John s and 26 vs. Georgetown, and was named to the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team. Jones is third on the team in points and second in rebounds, and has scored in double-figures in 16 games. She was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week after averaging 14.0 points and 8.0 rebounds in wins over UTA and Indiana. Morgan has started three games and is averaging 2.1 points and 1.8 rebounds per game. Roudebush has started six games and averaged 9.0 points against Connecticut and USF. Stephens has started 13 games and is fifth on the team in rebounding (3.5/g) and scoring (6.6/g). She set a career-high with 22 points on 9-of-15 shooting vs. USF.

3 CINCINNATI BASKETBALL GAME NOTES 3 ATTACKING THE BOARDS: The Bearcats have dominated the rebounding category this year, averaging a +6.6 margin, third in the BIG EAST, 20th in the nation and secondbest in school history. UC has won the rebounding battle in 19 of 28 games and posted a double-digit margin in 12 games. The top three rebounders on the team are freshmen Shelly Bellman (6.1/g) and Michelle Jones (5.3/g), and senior Anne Stephens (4.6/g). BEARCATS HONORED BY BIG EAST: Shelly Bellman was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week on Feb. 20, after averaging 10.5 points and 10.0 rebounds in wins over West Virginia and Louisville, and on Jan. 30, after she scored 26 points on 10-of-13 shooting vs. Georgetown. On Dec. 19, Michelle Jones became the first Bearcat woman honored by the BIG EAST. Jones was named Freshman of the Week for her role in wins over Texas-Arlington and Indiana, averaging 14 points and eight rebounds. She set career-highs with 17 points and seven rebounds vs. UTA and added 11 points and nine rebounds vs. Indiana. Treasure Humphries has twice been named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll. She was honored on Dec. 19 after averaging 22.0 points, 5.0 assists, 2.5 rebounds and 2.0 steals against Texas-Arlington and Indiana. Humphries was also named to the honor roll on Jan. 3 following her 22-point performance at Oregon State. OWNING THE ARC: In conference games, the Bearcats shot.362 from behind the arc, fourth in the BIG EAST. They made 10-of-16 against Georgetown and 7-of-12 at Connecticut. Karen Twehues led the league, shooting.486 (34-of-70) from three in conference games. Additionally, UC allowed opponents to shoot just.276 on threepointers in these games, including an 0-13 performance by West Virginia, to rank second. SPREADING THE WEALTH: Despite scoring over 70 points in 14 games, the Bearcats have just one player in the top 20 in the BIG EAST in scoring. UC has done it with balance as seven players are averaging at least 5.6 points per game. In eight games this year, four Bearcats have scored in double-figures, and UC averages 22.8 points per game off the bench. In the win over USF, the Bearcats owned a 47-3 edge in bench scoring and three reserves scored in double-figures. Ten players are playing over 10 minutes per game and UC has had 19 double-figure scoring performances by reserves. THE ART OF THE STEAL: As a freshman, Treasure Humphries led the Bearcats with 44 steals. After playing with an injured knee most of last season, she is back to her old tricks in She is currently averaging 2.5 steals per game, third in the BIG EAST. Humphries has made at least four thefts in eight games, including seven against Marquette and Fordham, which is tied for the second-most ever by a Bearcat. MORE ON THE TURNAROUND: The drastic eight-game improvement for UC can be traced mostly to better offensive efficiency and increased aggressiveness on both sides of the ball, as well as stronger rebounding. The defensive numbers between the years are very similar. ROAD WEARY: Of UC's last 69 losses, 46 have occurred away from Cincinnati. UC has lost 27 of its last 35 road or neutral games, but is 5-7 this year. The Bearcats are averaging 13.0 fewer points in their 12 away games this year than at home. They shoot.443 from the field and.727 from the line in Fifth Third Arena, but.390 and.646 away from it. They have committed 20 or more in eight games. Since committing a season-high 25 in back-to-back games against USF and St. John s, however, UC has had a new found respect for the ball. The Bearcats have averaged just 14.4 in the last 12 games, including a season-low 11 vs. Notre Dame. TWO-HEADED POINT: The Bearcats have the luxury of a pair of experienced and productive point guards who compliment each other well. Micah Harvey has been the starter for three years and currently ranks fourth in the BIG EAST in assists (4.6/g) and first in assist/turnover ratio (2.5). She had her best game of the year against Louisville, scoring 16 points with 10 assists for her first career double-double. Treasure Humphries not only leads UC in scoring, but is 12th in the league in assists (3.7/g). On Jan. 25 against Georgetown she set the school record by handing out 14 assists. In her three years she has served as both the starting point guard when Harvey is out and a shooting guard when they are together. FULL SPEED AHEAD: Junior Treasure Humphries led UC in steals as a freshman and was fourth on the team in scoring. Last year she tore her ACL in the preseason and despite coming back after just four months, was not herself the rest of the year. This year she is off and flying, leading the team in scoring (12.8/g) and steals (2.5/g) and ranking second in assists (3.7/g). Humphries has scored in double-figures in 20 games this year and reached 20 points five times. UNQUESTIONED LEADER: Head Coach UC Coaching Accomplishments Laurie Pirtle, in her 20th year, is UC's all-time leader in coaching wins and on Feb. 21, UC Under Pirtle Pre-Pirtle 2002, she earned her 250th win leading the Wins Bearcats. She is one of six BIG EAST coaches 20-Win Seasons 6 1 with at least 275 wins at their current school. Postseason Berths 9 1 On Feb. 20, 2004 against East Carolina Pirtle became the 54th active coach to win 350 games in a career. INSTANT OFFENSE: Junior Karen Twehues move from starter to reserve this season has not resulted in a decrease in her offensive production. She is averaging 6.1 points in just 11.6 minutes per game and shooting.439 from three (43-of-98), best in school annals. In conference play she was astounding, making a league-leading.486 of her treys and averaging 8.3 points in 14.5 minutes per game. STRONG SCHEDULE: The Bearcats played 13 games this year against teams that reached the postseason. Currently, three opponents No. 7 Connecticut, No. 9 Rutgers and No. 13 DePaul are ranked in the top 25 and St. John s is getting votes in both polls. Cincinnati's opponents compiled a (.552) record this year. Sixteen of the 26 opponents have a winning record and six have won 20 games as of March 14. CHANGE HAS NOT BEEN GOOD: By going and 7-9 in the BIG EAST, the Bearcats avoided the letdown that occurred the other three times they began play in a new conference. In , UC went 16-12, but won just three of 10 Metro Conference games saw the Bearcats repeat that 3-7 mark in their initial year in the Great Midwest Conference while going overall. In Conference USA s inaugural season, , UC went 4-10 in the new league and 8-19 overall. COMPUTERS AND THE CATS: In the NCAA s official RPI of March 6, the Bearcats are ranked 71st. In the latest rankings published by Jerry Palm at CollegeRPI.com, the Bearcats are rated 72nd in the nation with the 66th-toughest schedule, while the Collegiate Basketball News RPI Report puts UC at 71st with the 68th-best schedule. Jeff Sagarin s rankings have the Bearcats at 68th.
