The season marked the second straight year that the CAA produced a pair of NCAA teams and two NIT teams. VCU won the CAA Tournament, while Old Dominion earned an at-large bid. VCU knocked off Duke in the first round of the NCAA before falling to Pittsburgh in overtime. ODU was beaten by Butler in the first round. Drexel and Hofstra each advanced to the National Invitation Tournament. The Dragons season ended with a loss to ACC runner-up North Carolina State, while Hofstra fell to DePaul. During the season, George Mason, an at-large team, defeated Michigan State, North Carolina, Wichita State and UConn on the way to the Final Four. UNC Wilmington won the CAA Tournament and earned an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament, where they lost to George Washington in overtime. 5 Drexel Men s Basketball Players in the Pros Coach Flint has had more than 20 of his former players go on to play professional basketball, including nine since he took over as the head coach at Drexel. Frank Elegar is the latest to join the professional ranks. Elegar, who is 15th on the school s all-time scoring and rebounding list, is playing in Germany. Chaz Crawford and Dominick Mejia played in Turkey and the Dominican Republic, respectively, after graduation in Phil Goss, Sean Brooks, Kenell Sanchez, Eric Schmieder, Tim Whitworth and Robert Battle are all former Drexel players who are still active in Europe. Drexel has also produced two NBA players. Current New York Knick Malik Rose led Drexel to three NCAA tournament appearances and won two NBA titles. Michael Anderson, the school s all-time leader in scoring, played with the San Antonio Spurs. The Series vs. the Bison Date Result Site 12/22/07 Drexel 65, Bucknell 53 Philadelphia 2/26/92 Drexel 92. Drexel has made at least one three-point field goal in 494 straight games dating back to well before Coach Flint took over as head coach. The last time the Dragons did not make a three-pointer was at Vermont on Feb. 14, That was the same year that Bill Clinton was elected President, the original Dream Team won the Olympic Gold Medal in men s basketball and Johnny Carson hosted The Tonight Show. New Faces There are four new faces on the Drexel bench this year, although only three will suit up during the season. Junior Leon Spencer in in his first season after transferring from Brunswick Community College. Spencer, who is from Charlotte, brings athleticism to the Dragons frontcourt. Joining Spencer up front are Kevin Phillip and Samme Givens. Phillip is a 6-foot-6 forward from Brooklyn. Givens, a local who played at the Academy of the New Church, can play either forward spot. The other freshman, Chris Fouch, will sit out the season due to a knee injury. Fouch played at Rice High School in New York, the same school that produced former St. John s standout Felipe Lopez. The Seniors If Coach Flint s team is going to return to the elite of the CAA, seniors Scott Rodgers and Tramayne Hawthorne will be two reasons why. Both players are seasoned veterans who played key roles on the team that won 23 games and went to the NIT. Rodgers has started 68 games over the last four years and has 208 career assists and 97 career steals. He is a versatile player who sees most of his time on the wing, but can also play the point. He averaged more than 30 minutes of play a game as a sophomore and a junior. Defensively, Rodgers has often been assigned the opposing team s top perimeter threat. Hawthorne is Drexel s top long-range threat. He has knocked down 142 three-pointers since arriving on campus last season. He has shot better than 36 percent from deep in his career entering the year and he also has 117 career steals. Hawthorne has been among the top defensive guards in the CAA the last two seasons. 6 Drexel Men s Basketball Schedule Drexel has once again put together a challenging non-conference schedule. The Dragons have two teams on its schedule that made it all the way to the Final Four in the last two years. Drexel will travel to Memphis as John Calipari and Bruiser Flint s teams meet for the first time ever. Flint was Calipari s top assistant at UMass before taking over the program when Calipari went to the New Jersey Nets. The Tigers entered the season ranked 12th in the country. On Nov. 22, the Dragons lost to No. 22 Georgetown. Drexel defeated Cal State Northridge, the Big West preseason favorite, on Dec. 1. It was one of four non-conference home games on this year s slate. The Dragons host an ESPN BracketBusters game on Feb. 21. The Dragons still have non-conference games today at Bucknell, Monday at Memphis, Dec. 27 at Rider and on Dec. 31 vs. Saint Joseph s. Five of Drexel s non-league opponents won 20 or more games last season (Memphis, Georgetown, Rider, Saint Joseph s and Cal State Northridge). Three CAA opponents won at least 20 last year (VCU, George Mason and UNC Wilmington). From the Line Drexel has been an up and down team from the charity stripe so far this season. As a team, Drexel begins play tonight shooting.685 from the line. The team has shot at least 69 percent from the stripe in three of its games, but in the other three game, Drexel has shot 58 percent or less. The Dragons had made 33 of their last 37 free throws (.892) before struggling from the stripe at Fairfield. Two Dragons are shooting at least 70 percent from the line (minimum 10 attempts). Here are Drexel s leaders from the line: Scott Rodgers Evan Neisler Drexel s Game-by-Game Free-Throw Shooting vs. Penn at Georgetown vs. Cal St. Northridge vs. George Mason at Fairfield vs. Niagara On the Road Today is just the third road game of the season for the Dragons. Drexel played at No. 22 Georgetown on Nov. 22 and fell to the Hoyas, On Dec. 14, Drexel shot just 32 percent and lost at Fairfield, 66-60, despite committing only five turnovers and grabbing 22 offensive rebounds. Head Coach Bruiser Flint s teams have played well away from the DAC over the years. Flint has had a winning record on the road in four of his last six seasons. He has 49 road wins as Drexel s head coach and tied for the NCAA Division I lead with 13 road wins during the season. Last year, the Dragons were just 3-10 on the road. Player Pts. Reb. Ast.
