Georgia State topped Delaware, 99-72, in the season opener last year in Atlanta in the Panthers inaugural game in the CAA. State shot 56% for the game and controlled the boards with a rebound advantage. Delaware begins its sixth year in the CAA; Georgia State its second. The Opponent: Delaware began the Monte Ross era when he was announced as the new 36-year old head coach last spring, after coming from the Saint Joseph s staff. The Blue Hens come in off a home win over William & Mary, 77-62, behind a 27- point, 11-rebound effort by 6-7 junior Herb Courtney. Courtney leads the team with his 18.5 scoring average to rank 4th in the CAA and leads with his 6.6 rebounding average to rank 9th in the CAA. The junior forward also ranks 4th in blocked shots with 30 and has scored 20 or more points this season in eight games. Freshman 5-10 guard Brian Johnson is 3rd in the CAA in assists with his 4.76 per game. Senior 6-3 guard Calvin Cannon leads the CAA in free throw shooting with a.917 rate on his 33-of-36 on the season. Junior 6-5 forward Sam McMahon hit 4-of-6 three-point baskets Saturday. Delaware hit a season-best 12-of-25 three-point shots in the win over William & Mary. Georgia State leads the CAA in three-point shooting defense (.291) as they moved past William & Mary after Delaware s effort. One Delaware Connection - The Blue Hens senior forward Chris Prothro was coached in high school by a former Georgia State player. Courtney Brooks, a Panthers point guard from , is the head coach at Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy. That school under Brooks has been in the State Class A title game four straight years, winning two. In 2004, that school s 6-11 center Dwight Howard was picked in the first round by the Orlando Magic. Last year, 6-4 guard Javaris Crittenton was Mr. Georgia Basketball and McDonald s All-American who is now the starting point guard for Georgia Tech and is NBA-bound one day. Prothro was second team All-State as a junior and a Top 25 best player pre-season pick as a senior before a season-ending knee injury. CAA Tournament - March Madness in the CAA takes place in Richmond from Friday, March 2 through Monday night s championship game on March 5. Last year, UNC Wilmington defeated Hofstra in the championship game to earn the NCAA bid. How did Cinderella George Mason get to the Final Four? They got an at large bid after beating Georgia State in overtime and bowing to Hofstra in the semi finals. That s why it s Madness folks. Hofstra and Old Dominion each got postseason NIT bids and advanced to the final eight of that event as the CAA had four teams in postseason play.

4 GEORGIA STATE GAME NOTES FAST FACTS ON THIS SEASON Panthers have used 8 different starting line-ups, including a different one in each of the past 7 straight games. Panthers have come-from-behind after being down at halftime to win 4 games this year. Panthers have never posted back-to-back CAA wins yet. Each time last year they won a CAA game, they lost the next won (beat Delaware, lost Mason; beat William & Mary, lost Drexel, beat James Madison, lost William & Mary). This year they beat Towson but then fell to William & Mary. Saturday they beat UNCW and face Delaware on the road. The lead has changed hands the most this year 13 times vs. Charleston, 11 times vs. Towson and WSSU, 8 with Savannah, and 6 times each vs. Hofstra, Iowa, and Alabama State. THE BEST IS YET TO COME? Georgia State is one of the CAA s younger teams as 12 of the 14 members of this year s team should be back for next season. The Panthers have six freshmen, two sophomores and four juniors playing this season. Of the 90 possible starts this year through the 16 games, 59 of those starts (74%) have been by the underclassmen. Of the 30 possible starts in the CAA games, 24 of those (80%) have been by the underclassmen. TAKING BETTER CARE OF THE BALL Through the first 12 games, State s lowest turnover game was 12 (vs. Savannah State) with 8 games of 16 or more turnovers (5 games over 20). In the past 4 games, they have had that 12 or lower in each game with 11 vs. Towson, 12 vs. William & Mary, 12 vs. Northeastern and 11 vs. UNC Wilmington. The former All-American guard at Temple is still the Atlantic-10 Conference s all-time leading scorer and was No. 20 in NCAA history when he graduated. Macon helped Temple to a 32-2 season and a No. 1 regular season ranking. He ll be put to good use with all the new and young guards on the Panthers roster. State welcomes seven new players, including two junior college transfers and five freshmen, into the program. With four senior guards gone from last year, the Panthers will be looking closely at the play of the new guards to determine the playing rotation time for the season. Wing Ryan McBride, left, is one of those seven new faces. He has scored 106 points this season with his 23 threepoint baskets. Georgia State starts the year as the team with the best winning percentage in the state since Coaches Driesell & Perry arrived in State has won.575 of its games, Tech has won.543 of its games and UGA has won.515 of its games in these past nine years. 3. The Panthers love to play fast and win. When State scores 80 or more points, State has won 20 straight games and 54 of the past 57 games. 4. State can shoot the ball. The Panthers have made at least one threepoint basket in 325 straight games and 180 or more in a season for seven straight years. 5. At home, the Panthers have a record since Feb The Panthers have won 20 or more games in three of the past six years and have enjoyed winning seasons in six of the past nine years. 7. State has earned two NCAA postseason bids and one NIT postseason bid since 91. State won an NCAA tournament game in The coaching staff includes two former All-America players and three coaches who have coached into the Sweet Sixteen round of the tournament. 9. 18 1. The CAA was the No. 8 ranked league of the 31 NCAA Division I conferences with six teams in the top 90 in the nation. 2. Only one conference, the CAA, had a team in the Final Four of the NCAA (George Mason), the Final Four of the pre-season NIT (Drexel) at Madison Square Garden and the Final Four of the post-season NIT (Old Dominion) at Madison Square Garden. 3. The CAA was the only conference in the nation to have four teams with 24 or more wins (George Mason-27, Hofstra-26, UNC Wilmington-24, Old Dominion-24). 4. Four CAA teams earned post season bids (UNC Wilmington as tournament champ and George Mason at-large for the NCAA, Hofstra and Old Dominion for the NIT). 5. CAA teams combined to win nearly 60% of their non-conference games in Consider that 60% of all their non-conference games were played on the road. 6. In post-season, the CAA stood out with an 8-3 record in the NCAA and NIT, second best in the nation. Those eight wins were over North Carolina, Connecticut, Michigan State, Colorado, Nebraska, Wichita State, St. Joseph s, Manhattan. 7. The CAA is considered the No. 1 ranked league in the Mid-Major polls with George Mason No. 1, UNC Wilmington No. 6, Hofstra No. 7 and ODU No Not since Larry Bird and Indiana State made the Final Four in 1979 had a school like George Mason stolen the show during last year s NCAA Tournament. The CAA has a reputation of NCAA bracket-busting as the teams have taken out No. 2 seeds (twice), No. 3 (twice), No. 4 (twice), and No. 5 (twice) in recent years. 9. All 12 CAA teams were picked this year for the ESPN BracketBuster Saturday in February. 10. The cupboard is still full. Almost half the league s top 20 scorers and rebounders return for and the league will have more TV games than ever before.
