3 Georgia State Basketball Notes HEAD COACH ROD BARNES A new era in Georgia State basketball has begun with the naming of former Naismith National coach of the Year Rod Barnes to lead the Panther program. Barnes, who spent eight years as the head coach at Mississippi, is a 17-year veteran of college coaching and was an assistant coach in at Oklahoma. He was honored as the Naismith Coach of the Year as well as Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year in , when he led Ole Miss to its most successful season ever. His squad set a school-record for wins with a 27-8 record, advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the only time in school history and achieved a final national ranking of No. 9. A former All-Southeastern Conference player at Ole Miss, Barnes is the only person to earn All-SEC honors as a player and then be named SEC Coach of the Year. Barnes, 41, compiled a record in eight seasons at Ole Miss ( ), guiding the Rebels to four postseason bids, including three appearances in the NCAA Tournament. Barnes first Ole Miss squad recorded the first NCAA Tournament win in school history with a 1999 first-round victory over Villanova. Two years later, the Rebels picked up NCAA Tournament over Iona and Notre Dame to reach the Sweet 16. He also spent five seasons as an assistant coach at Ole Miss under Rob Evans before being elevated to dead coach on April 9, In addition to coaching the only three NCAA Tournament victories in school history, Barnes was part of five of the six NCAA appearances in Ole Miss annals as head or assistant coach. 18 Georgia State Game Recaps Game 1: UAB 86, GEORGIA STATE 66 Robert Vaden scored 26 points on eight three-pointers to lead UAB to an victory over Georgia State in the season opener for both teams. Although the debut for Georgia State head coach Rod Barnes did not produce a victory, the Panthers, bolstered by 24 points from Leonard Mendez, trailed by just four points with less than eight minutes play. After playing an even first half, Georgia State fell behind by 17 points, trailing with 12:26 to play before outscoring the Blazers, 16-3, over the next five minutes. Senior Justin Billingslea completed a pair of three-point plays to begin the run, which brought the Panthers within at the 7:42 mark. Leading by just five at with seven minutes to go, UAB erupted for 15 straight points to build a lead with 2:43 to play. I felt for 32 minutes we did everything we needed to do to win, said Barnes. The last six or seven minutes, however, we made some critical mistakes that allowed them to make some easy baskets down the stretch. Although we didn t get the win, the guys gained a tremendous amount of confidence. We just have to work harder on our mistakes and develop consistency. Mendez connected on 10-for-15 from the field, including two three-pointers, while contributing six rebounds and three steals. Junior Rashad Chase had a doubledouble for the Panthers with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore guard Trae Goldston added 10 points, despite picking up his third foul in the first half. UAB, predicted to finish second in Conference USA behind Memphis, had four players in double figures, including Vaden, the Indiana transfer who connected on 8- for-13 from three-point range in his first game for the Blazers. Reggie Huffman had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Walter Sharpe and Paul Delaney added 13 points each. UAB shot 55 percent for the game. State fell behind by as many as 10 points in the first half and trailed with four-and-a-half minutes to go in the period. But the Panthers scored the final five points of the half, including a jumper by Mendez with one second left that tied the score at 37-all heading into the intermission. The Phoenix never trailed and shot 58 percent for the game to just 38 percent for Georgia State, which was also hurt by 22 turnovers. Georgia State trailed just early in the second half but the Panthers were held scoreless for more than eight minutes, going without a point from the 16:44 mark until Chase s field goal ended the drought at 8:38. During that stretch, Elon extended its lead to Give Elon a lot of credit because they did a good job, said Georgia State head coach Rod Barnes. It s unfortunate that we didn t show up and give them a game, and I take responsibility for that. It s unacceptable. We weren t aggressive all night, and that s going to catch up to you. They jumped on us early, like a home team should, and they finished us off. With such an inexperienced team, I was a little worried about how they would respond to going on the road for the first time, but that shouldn t be an excuse. We ve got to get our players to understand what it takes to go on the road and get a win. Elon scored the first 11 points of the game and built a advantage with eight minutes to play in the half. The Panthers managed to pull within on Trae Goldston s three-pointer with 2:53 left in the half but Elon got a pair of free throws from Watson to take a lead into the intermission. Goldston added nine points for Panthers, while Norman Mitchell came off the bench to score seven. Watson was one of three double-figure scorers for the Phoenix, who also got 14 points from Ola Atoyebi and 12 points from Monty Sanders. GEORGIA STATE AT ELON 11/17/07 7:30 pm at Elon, N.C.
