UAB UAB holds a 5-2 lead in the series with Georgia State as the two schools square off for the first time in seven years. The Panthers captured the last meeting with a victory on Dec. 12, 2000 in the Nike Festival in Honolulu, Hawaii. Before that contest, the teams had not met in nearly 20 years. State and UAB played six times in a three-year span from through when both were members of the Sun Belt Conference. TWO PANTHERS FROM ALABAMA FACE HOMETOWN TEAM Georgia State takes on UAB with two players from the Birmingham, Ala., area. Sophomore guard Norman Mitchell hails from Midfield and attended Midfield High School. Junior Trey Hampton, who is sitting out this season after transferring from Mississippi, attended Hoover High School in Hoover, Ala. Another Panther who is sitting out this season as a transfer, junior forward Bernard Rimmer, was a teammate of UAB s Walter Sharpe when both were at Mississippi State in Sharpe left Mississippi State for UAB after the season, while Rimmer transferred following last season. GEORGIA STATE IN SEASON OPENERS Georgia State is in season openers. The Panthers dropped last year s opener, to the College of Charleston at the Sports Arena, but won the previous year with a victory over Delaware in what was also Georgia State s inaugural Colonial Athletic Association game. The Panthers are opening the season at home at the Sports Arena for the third straight year. ATLANTA S TEAM Georgia State s probable starting lineup is made up of five Atlanta-area products: senior Justin Billingslea of Lithia Springs (Lithia Springs HS), junior Leonard Mendez of Smyrna (Campbell HS), junior Rashad Chase of Atlanta (Mays HS), sophomore Trae Goldston of Decatur (Redan HS before transferring to IMG academy in Bradenton, Fla.), and freshman Jihad Ali of Atlanta (M.L. King HS). Of the 15 players on the Panther s roster (including four transfers who are sitting out this season), 10 are from the state of Georgia, eight of them from metro Atlanta. In addition to the five starters, Georgia State s reserves from the Atlanta area are sophomores Ousman Krubally of Atlanta (W.D. Mohammed HS), Kevin Lott of Atlanta (Sandy Creek HS) and Michael Moynihan of Roswell (Centennial HS). Freshman D.J. Jones of Hinesville (Wilkinson County HS) and junior transfer Joe Dukes of Cuthbert (Randolph-Clay HS) round out the Peach State contingent. Three Georgia State players led their respective high school teams to state titles in Georgia in Chase (Mays, Class AAAA in 2004 and 2005), Dukes (Randolph-Clay, 2005 Class A) and Jones (Wilkinson County, 2007 Class A). MENDEZ CONNECTS FROM LONG RANGE Junior guard Leonard Mendez, a preseason honorable mention all-conference selection, led the Colonial Athletic Association in three-point shooting last season, connecting on 47.5 percent from beyond the arc. Mendez hit 58 of 122 threepointers to set a school- record for three- point accuracy in a season. That performance raised his career mark to 45.7 percent (63-138), which would be a Georgia State record if he can maintain that pace. Mendez s average of 1.9 treys per game ranked seventh in the CAA.
3 Georgia State Basketball Notes HEAD COACH ROD BARNES A new era in Georgia State basketball has begun with the naming of former Naismith National coach of the Year Rod Barnes to lead the Panther program. Barnes, who spent eight years as the head coach at Mississippi, is a 17-year veteran of college coaching and was an assistant coach in at Oklahoma. He was honored as the Naismith Coach of the Year as well as Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year in , when he led Ole Miss to its most successful season ever. His squad set a school-record for wins with a 27-8 record, advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the only time in school history and achieved a final national ranking of No. 9. A former All-Southeastern Conference player at Ole Miss, Barnes is the only person to earn All-SEC honors as a player and then be named SEC Coach of the Year. Barnes, 41, compiled a record in eight seasons at Ole Miss ( ), guiding the Rebels to four postseason bids, including three appearances in the NCAA Tournament. Barnes first Ole Miss squad recorded the first NCAA Tournament win in school history with a 1999 first-round victory over Villanova. Two years later, the Rebels picked up NCAA Tournament over Iona and Notre Dame to reach the Sweet 16. He also spent five seasons as an assistant coach at Ole Miss under Rob Evans before being elevated to dead coach on April 9, In addition to coaching the only three NCAA Tournament victories in school history, Barnes was part of five of the six NCAA appearances in Ole Miss annals as head or assistant coach. A native of Satartia, Miss., and a 1988 graduate of Ole Miss, Barnes began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Livingston, now known as the University of West Alabama, for three years before returning to his alma mater in ROD BARNES AS A HEAD COACH Mississippi (NCAA 2nd round) Mississippi (NIT 2nd round) Mississippi (NCAA Sweet 16) Mississippi (NCAA) Mississippi Mississippi Mississippi Mississippi Total, Mississippi Georgia State Career Mendez averaged 13.8 points per game, good for 13th in the CAA, and also ranked sixth in the league in overall field goal percentage (.487) and 13th in steals (1.3 per game). GEORGIA STATE CAREER LEADERS - THREE-POINT FG% Player... Years 3P-3PA Pct. Leonard Mendez Marcus Brown Anton Reese MENDEZ PICKS UP WHERE HE LEFT OFF Although the statistics from exhibition games don t count, Leonard Mendez posted numbers in Tuesday s win over Clark Atlanta that indicate he has picked up where he left off at the end of last season. Over the final three games of last season, Mendez averaged 22.3 points and hit 14-of-24 three-pointers. That included a career-high 28 points against NCAA Tournament team VCU in the regular-season finale, 17 points with a gamewinning three-pointer against William & Mary in the first round of the CAA Tournament, and then 22 points against VCU in the CAA quarterfinals. The junior from Smyrna, Ga., poured in 27 points against CAU, hitting 10- of-13 field goals including 5-for-8 on three-pointers. CHASE CHASES REBOUNDS Georgia State s top returning rebounder is junior Rashad Chase, who pulled down 5.9 boards per game. The 6-7, 235-pounder was particularly effective on the offensive glass, where he grabbed nearly 40 percent of his rebounds (71 of 184). Chase s average of 2.29 offensive rebounds per game was good for sixth in the CAA, while his overall average ranked 13th. A CAA All-Rookie selection in 2006, Chase averaged 8.5 points and 1.0 steals per game last season. Chase had a game-high nine rebounds in the exhibition win over Clark Atlanta. KRUBALLY MAKING A NAME Perhaps the most unlikely standout in Georgia State s exhibition victory over Clark Atlanta was sophomore Ousman Krubally. The 6-6 forward from Atlanta joined the program as a walk-on just prior to last season and then played in only three games. But he has impressed the Georgia State coaches with his hustle and hard work and should be a key reserve for the Panthers. Against Clark Atlanta, Krubally, whose parents are natives of Gambia, contributed 13 points on 6-for-8 shooting and grabbed six rebounds in 23 minutes. 356 AND COUNTING Entering the season, Georgia State has made at least one three-point field goal in 356 straight games, dating back to late in the season. The last team to hold the Panthers without a trey was Stetson on Feb. 18, DICKERSON ON THE BLOCK Center Deven Dickerson enters his senior season as one of just three players in school history with 100 or more career blocked shots. With 101 rejections, he currently stands third in the Georgia State record, trailing Zavian Smith (128) and Nate Williams (113). Last season, Dickerson ranked fifth in the CAA with 1.68 blocks per game. His total of 47 blocks is the third-best season in school history. Dickerson had 46 blocks as a sophomore, giving him two of the top four season totals in Panther annals. Dickerson started 15 games last season, averaging 4.9 points and 4.6 rebounds, but he is currently sidelined with a knee injury.

Highlighting the non-conference slate are contests against Atlantic Coast Conference teams Georgia Tech and Florida State and a match up with UAB, in the season opener and first game for head coach Rod Barnes. Georgia Tech visits the Georgia State Sports Arena for the first time since 1973 and just the second time ever. State travels to FSU in the second year of a four-game contract; the Seminoles played at the Sports Arena last year and will return next season. The Panthers will play another quality non-conference game on the road in the third annual BracketBusters event, scheduled for Feb. 23, with pairings announced Feb. 4. GEORGIA STATE IN THE CAA Georgia State enters its third season as a member of the Colonial Athletic Association. More on the CAA s success last season: The CAA placed two teams in the NCAA tournament for the second year in a row. Four CAA teams earned postseason berths in 2007 for the third consecutive season. VCU (#44), Old Dominion (#45), Drexel (#55) and Hofstra (#75) were among the top 75 nationally in the final NCAA RPI and each won 22 or more games. The CAA has gone 10-8 in postseason play over the past two years, including a 5-4 mark in the NCAA tournament. LEFTY DRIESELL TO ENTER HALL OF FAME Former Georgia State head coach Charles Lefty Driesell will be inducted into the National College Basketball Hall of Fame on Nov. 18, Driesell will be a member of the Hall s second class. The only coach in NCAA history to win 100 games at four different schools, Driesell ranks sixth all-time in NCAA Division 1 victories with a career record of He led four schools (Davidson, Maryland, James Madison and Georgia State) to the NCAA tournament. Driesell coached the Panthers from the season through Jan. 3, 2003, compiling a record of His tenure was highlighted in by a school record 29 victories, the TAAC regular season and tournament championships, and the first NCAA tournament victory in school history, a first- round win over Wisconsin. Driesell s Georgia State teams won or shared the Atlantic Sun regular season title three straight years and made back-to-back postseason appearances with the 2001 NCAA Tournament and the 2002 NIT. Driesell s grandson, Michael Moynihan, is a sophomore guard for the Panthers.
