3 Georgia State Basketball Notes HEAD COACH ROD BARNES A new era in Georgia State basketball has begun with the naming of former Naismith National coach of the Year Rod Barnes to lead the Panther program. Barnes, who spent eight years as the head coach at Mississippi, is a 17-year veteran of college coaching and was an assistant coach in at Oklahoma. He was honored as the Naismith Coach of the Year as well as Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year in , when he led Ole Miss to its most successful season ever. His squad set a school-record for wins with a 27-8 record, advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the only time in school history and achieved a final national ranking of No. 9. A former All-Southeastern Conference player at Ole Miss, Barnes is the only person to earn All-SEC honors as a player and then be named SEC Coach of the Year. Barnes, 41, compiled a record in eight seasons at Ole Miss ( ), guiding the Rebels to four postseason bids, including three appearances in the NCAA Tournament. Barnes first Ole Miss squad recorded the first NCAA Tournament win in school history with a 1999 first-round victory over Villanova. Two years later, the Rebels picked up NCAA Tournament over Iona and Notre Dame to reach the Sweet 16. He also spent five seasons as an assistant coach at Ole Miss under Rob Evans before being elevated to dead coach on April 9, In addition to coaching the only three NCAA Tournament victories in school history, Barnes was part of five of the six NCAA appearances in Ole Miss annals as head or assistant coach. A native of Satartia, Miss., and a 1988 graduate of Ole Miss, Barnes began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Livingston, now known as the University of West Alabama, for three years before returning to his alma mater in ROD BARNES AS A HEAD COACH Mississippi (NCAA 2nd round) Mississippi (NIT 2nd round) Mississippi (NCAA Sweet 16) Mississippi (NCAA) Mississippi Mississippi Mississippi Mississippi Total, Mississippi Georgia State Career ON THE REBOUND Georgia State leads the CAA in rebounding margin as the Panthers are outrebounding their opponents by an average of 7.2 per game. State has outrebounded four of its six opponents. Individually, Rashad Chase leads the Panthers and ranks third in the CAA with 10.8 rebounds per game. ATLANTA S TEAM Georgia State s probable starting lineup is made up of all Atlanta-area products: senior Justin Billingslea of Lithia Springs (Lithia Springs HS), junior Leonard Mendez of Smyrna (Campbell HS), junior Rashad Chase of Atlanta (Mays HS), sophomore Trae Goldston of Decatur (Redan HS before transferring to IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla.), and either freshman Jihad Ali of Atlanta (M.L. King HS) or sophomore Kevin Lott of Atlanta (Sandy Creek HS). Of the 15 players on the Panthers roster (including four transfers who are sitting out this season), 10 are from the state of Georgia, eight of them from metro Atlanta. In addition to the probable starters, Georgia State s reserves from the Atlanta area are sophomores Ousman Krubally of Atlanta (W.D. Mohammed HS) and Michael Moynihan of Roswell (Centennial HS). Freshman D.J. Jones of Hinesville (Wilkinson County HS) and junior transfer Joe Dukes of Cuthbert (Randolph-Clay HS) round out the Peach Staters. Three Georgia State players led their respective high school teams to state titles in Georgia in Chase (Mays, Class AAAA in 2004 and 2005), Dukes (Randolph-Clay, 2005 Class A) and Jones (Wilkinson County, 2007 Class A). MENDEZ HEATS UP Leonard Mendez poured in 52 points in Georgia State s back-to-back victories over Troy and Jacksonville. Mendez hit 58 of 122 three-pointers to set a school-record for three- point accuracy in a season. His average of 1.9 treys per game ranked seventh in the CAA. This season, Mendez is currently ninth in the league in three-point percentage (.414) and eighth in three-pointers per game (2.4). Mendez s career mark stands at 44.7 percent, just off the Georgia State record if he can maintain that pace. GEORGIA STATE CAREER LEADERS - THREE-POINT FG% Player... Years 3P-3PA Pct. 1. Marcus Brown Leonard Mendez Anton Reese CHASE CHASES REBOUNDS Georgia State s top rebounder is junior Rashad Chase, who is third in the CAA with 10.8 boards per game, along with 9.7 points an outing. He has reached doublefigure rebounds in five of the first six games this season, including two double-doubles, highlighted by a career-best 16 boards against Troy. Chase, a CAA All-Rookie selection in 2006, led the Panthers last season with 5.9 rebounds per game. The 6-7, 235-pounder is particularly effective on the offensive glass, where he grabbed nearly 40 percent of his rebounds (71 of 184) last season. His average of 2.29 offensive rebounds per game was good for sixth in the CAA, while his overall average ranked 13th. FRESHMAN STEPS UP One of Georgia State s top players off the bench has been freshman point guard D.J. Jones, who averages 1.7 points, 3.2 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.0 steals per game. Athough he has started just one game, he is third on the team in minutes played at 26.5 per game. Jones made his first start against Old Dominion with Trae Goldston hampered by an ankle injury. In the Panthers win over Troy, Jones contributed six points, six rebounds, five assists and two blocked shots. Most importantly, he sealed the win as he stepped up to the free throw line with six seconds left and State ahead by three points and drilled both free throws for the final margin. The Hinesville, Ga., native again turned in clutch play in the Panthers win at Jacksonville. Handling the point for most of the second half after the injury to Goldston, he had two points, four rebounds, two assists and three steals. With State clinging to a three-point lead with 14 seconds left, he rebounded Rashad Chase s missed free throw, got fouled and then sank a free throw to make it a two-possession game. DICKERSON ON THE BLOCK Center Deven Dickerson entered his senior season as one of just three players in school history with 100 or more career blocked shots. With 102 rejections, he stands third in the Georgia State record, trailing Zavian Smith (128) and Nate Williams (113). Last season, Dickerson ranked fifth in the CAA with 1.68 blocks per game. His total of 47 blocks is the third-best season in school history. Dickerson had 46 blocks as a sophomore, giving him two of the top four seasons in Panther annals. Dickerson started 15 games last season, averaging 4.9 points and 4.6 rebounds, but he is working his way into shape after an offseason knee injury. 18 Georgia State Game Recaps Game 1: UAB 86, GEORGIA STATE 66 Robert Vaden scored 26 points on eight three-pointers to lead UAB to an victory over Georgia State in the season opener for both teams. Although the debut for Georgia State head coach Rod Barnes did not produce a victory, the Panthers, bolstered by 24 points from Leonard Mendez, trailed by just four points with less than eight minutes play. After playing an even first half, Georgia State fell behind by 17 points, trailing with 12:26 to play before outscoring the Blazers, 16-3, over the next five minutes. Senior Justin Billingslea completed a pair of three-point plays to begin the run, which brought the Panthers within at the 7:42 mark. Leading by just five at with seven minutes to go, UAB erupted for 15 straight points to build a lead with 2:43 to play. I felt for 32 minutes we did everything we needed to do to win, said Barnes. The last six or seven minutes, however, we made some critical mistakes that allowed them to make some easy baskets down the stretch. Although we didn t get the win, the guys gained a tremendous amount of confidence. We just have to work harder on our mistakes and develop consistency. Mendez connected on 10-for-15 from the field, including two three-pointers, while contributing six rebounds and three steals. Junior Rashad Chase had a doubledouble for the Panthers with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore guard Trae Goldston added 10 points, despite picking up his third foul in the first half. UAB, predicted to finish second in Conference USA behind Memphis, had four players in double figures, including Vaden, the Indiana transfer who connected on 8- for-13 from three-point range in his first game for the Blazers. Reggie Huffman had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Walter Sharpe and Paul Delaney added 13 points each. UAB shot 55 percent for the game. State fell behind by as many as 10 points in the first half and trailed with four-and-a-half minutes to go in the period. But the Panthers scored the final five points of the half, including a jumper by Mendez with one second left that tied the score at 37-all heading into the intermission. Rashad Chase had his second straight double-double for the Panthers (0-2) with 10 points and 10 rebounds, but leading scorer Leonard Mendez managed just six points on 2-for-10 shooting after the Georgia State standout had poured in 24 against UAB. The Phoenix never trailed and shot 58 percent for the game to just 38 percent for Georgia State, which was also hurt by 22 turnovers. Georgia State trailed just early in the second half but the Panthers were held scoreless for more than eight minutes, going without a point from the 16:44 mark until Chase s field goal ended the drought at 8:38. During that stretch, Elon extended its lead to Give Elon a lot of credit because they did a good job, said Georgia State head coach Rod Barnes. It s unfortunate that we didn t show up and give them a game, and I take responsibility for that. It s unacceptable. We weren t aggressive all night, and that s going to catch up to you. They jumped on us early, like a home team should, and they finished us off. With such an inexperienced team, I was a little worried about how they would respond to going on the road for the first time, but that shouldn t be an excuse. We ve got to get our players to understand what it takes to go on the road and get a win. Elon scored the first 11 points of the game and built a advantage with eight minutes to play in the half. The Panthers managed to pull within on Trae Goldston s three-pointer with 2:53 left in the half but Elon got a pair of free throws from Watson to take a lead into the intermission. Goldston added nine points for Panthers, while Norman Mitchell came off the bench to score seven. Watson was one of three double-figure scorers for the Phoenix, who also got 14 points from Ola Atoyebi and 12 points from Monty Sanders. GEORGIA STATE AT ELON 11/17/07 7:30 pm at Elon, N.C.
