Georgia State plays in its second CAA Championship after being a No. 10 seed last year at 7-21 in the regular season and 3-15 in the CAA games. State won its tournament opener over No. 7 Towson and lost to No. 2 George Mason in overtime. State s rugged schedule has seen them lose 11 games to teams with 18 or more wins, plus a 12th loss at Iowa. In the RPIratings.com rankings, State is at No. 242 of the 336 schools with a strength of schedule of 169. William & Mary is at No. 186 with a strength of schedule of 199. The Panthers have used 12 different starting line-ups with the most any five players have been used together being 6 times. With 5 wins coming after they trailed at halftime, that equals the five wins they had when they led at halftime. The Panthers are 7-8 in games decided by 10 or more points. This is a homecoming game for two Richmond natives. Coach Michael Perry is a graduate of Thomas Jefferson High and University of Richmond, while coaching at both Virginia Union and Richmond. Junior center Deven Dickerson was the Capital District Player of the Year at Henrico High School. His mom, Eunice, was a star at Buckingham High and All-CIAA at Virginia Union and his dad, Lonnie, was a star at J.F. Kennedy High and Virginia Union. The team captain is sophomore Leonard Mendez, who leads a group of 12 players who can return next year for State. Mendez ranks in the Top 15 in the CAA in 7 categories. Georgia State is built a little different than most of the guard-oriented three-point shooting teams of the CAA. The Panthers rotate four inside players and try to get the ball to them. State ranks No. 3 in rebounding, No. 4 in getting to the free throw line (648 times, 115 more than its opponents), No. 4 in offensive rebounding and No. 5 in blocking shots. But, they can shoot the three-point shot as evidenced by the CAA s best three-point shooter in two-guard Leonard Mendez (46.9% on 49-of-105) and point guard Ron Larris (41.7% on 25-of-60). Ryan McBride also adds 35 treys when he is at the wing.

3 GEORGIA STATE TOURNAMENT NOTES THE CAA - The Colonial Athletic Association has worked its way up to the premier spot among the nation s Mid-Major conferences after last year s No. 8 final conference ranking and four teams getting post-season bids (two NCAA, two NIT). This year, the CAA is shining as bright as ever in the Mid-Major Poll with the four CAA leaders in the top 11 of that poll. ODU is No. 5, VCU is No. 8, Drexel is No. 9 and Hofstra is No. 11. The only other conference to have four in the Top 20 is the Missouri Valley (MVC) with Southern Illinois at No. 1, Creighton at No. 10, Missouri State at No. 15 and Bradley at No. 19. Currently, ODU is No. 38 and VCU is tied for No. 41 in the AP poll of Feb. 26, while VCU is tied at No. 40 in the USA Today/ESPN poll. All four of the 20-win plus CAA teams have received votes in the national polls this year. The CAA and Big East are the only two to have four teams with 22 or more wins as of Feb. 27. The CAA earned two NCAA bids last year and had gotten two in 2002, so they ll be eyeing a pair again for the third time in five years. George Mason was the CAA s first Final Four team. But, Coach Michael Perry was on a Richmond coaching staff in 1988 that made a run to the Sweet 16 after beating No. 4 Indiana and No. 5 Georgia Tech. In that Sweet 16, No. 13 seed Richmond s run was ended by a hot freshman from Temple named Mark Macon, now on the Georgia State coaching staff. Thus, Georgia State has two coaches who have been to the Sweet 16. Prior to George Mason s run last year, UNC Wilmington had defeated No. 4 Southern Cal in the 2002 NCAA Tournament. TOURNAMENT COVERAGE Television Schedule: Fans will be able to watch all 11 games of the CAA Men s Basketball Championship through various platforms. Friday s first-round games will be webstreamed for FREE on CAASports.com. The four Saturday quarterfinals and the two Sunday semifinals will be televised on CN8 and are available on the web at CN8.tv. Regional sports networks CSS and SportsNet New York and WSKY in eastern Virginia will also carry quarterfinal and semifinal games. Monday s Championship game will be televised nationally by ESPN at 7 p.m. CAA on Sirius Satellite Radio: The entire CAA Men s Basketball Championship will also be broadcast nationally on Sirius Satellite Radio. The four first-round games will be aired on Channel 126, the quarterfinals are on Channel 130, the semifinals are on Channel 107 and the title game is on Channel 130. In Richmond, station ESPN Radio 950 AM will air the games. Georgia State Radio: Veteran Dave Cohen, in his 24th year of calling Georgia State games, will bring the games to fans on WRAS-FM (88.5) through its 100,000 watts of power throughout the state. Live pregame shows with guests start 30 minutes before tip (11:30 a.m. Friday) and then live postgame shows with guests complete the broadcast. Teaming with Cohen for a seventh season is Charlie Taylor, the associate A.D. for Communications.

Georgia State s overall strength of schedule was rated No. 169 of the 336 teams.the Panthers got their first CAA season sweep by beating UNC Wilmington twice this season, while splitting with Towson and Northeastern, and winning the only season match on the road at Delaware. CAA Recognition Senior Lance Perique, photo left, was recognized as the CAA Player of the Week for the week of Dec. 18. That week, the 6-8 forward scored a career-best 29 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in a Panthers win. That makes Perique the first Panthers player to be honored as Player of the Week. Freshman guard Trae Goldston, photo right, was saluted as the CAA Rookie of the Week for the week of Nov. 20. The southpaw guard scored 22 points on 7-of-11 field goal attempts and also hit 4-of-6 three-point baskets in his best game of the year. Goldston also had three assists, two steals and two rebounds. Goldston is the second Panthers player to be named Rookie of the Week following Rashad Chase last year.

5 GEORGIA STATE TOURNAMENT NOTES Georgia State will again play host to the 19th annual college Slam Dunk and Three-Point Shooting Championships. The annual event will be held on Thursday, March 29 at the Georgia State Sports Arena. The contest will be televised that night at 9 p.m.on ESPN and shown multiple times in replays over the next weeks. The ESPN Slam Dunk & Three-Point Championships Tickets will also be on sale through GeorgiaStateSports.com with discounts for Georgia State students. In the photo below, many of Lefty s Loonies cheering section in 2002 joined in with their 10 scoring signs. The event brings top male and female college student-athletes to one location for a live shoot-out from three-point range and judged dunking by celebrity judges. In the 2002 event held at Georgia State, the celebrity judges were Falcons quarterback Michael Vick, champion boxer Evander Holyfield, Georgia State Coach Lefty Driesell, Cincinnati Coach Bob Huggins, and Atlanta rapper Jermaine Dupri.

They lead a group of 12 returning players for next year. Leonard Mendez, No. 21, is the team captain this year : LEADS the CAA in three-point shooting (.467) with Ranks in Top 15 in 7 different CAA categories. Georgia State is one of the CAA s younger teams as 12 of the 14 members of this year s team should be back for next season. The Panthers have six freshmen, two sophomores and four juniors playing this season. Of the 145 possible starts this year through the 29 games, 104 of those starts (72%) have been by the underclassmen freshmen and sophomores. Of the 95 possible starts in the CAA games, 69 of those (73%) have been by the underclassmen. The four juniors (right) have logged 2,047 combined minutes with 102 games played.

11 GEORGIA STATE TOURNAMENT NOTES THE HOT HAND Senior forward Lance Perique has been doing what he does best: scoring points. He has played multiple positions this season to help the team. The 6-8 slasher s season inludes: Leads the team with his 15.6 point season average, 6th CAA Top scoring games of 29, 26, 23, 22, 20,and 19 five times. Has scored in double figures in 23 games. Top rebounding games of 14, 10, 8, 8, 7, 7, 7, 7 and 7 this season Leads the team in FG percentage (.497), 6th CAA Hit 130-of-194 free throws (3rd most attempts in CAA this season). Made 14 straight at one point with a perfect game of 10-for-10 in that streak. Has scored 554 points in two seasons and pulled down 214 rebounds at State Perique Family lost home and posssesions in Hurricane Katrina, but survived and lived in Atlanta for a year before returning to New Orleans Perique led the state of Louisiana in high school with his 27 points per game average and a top game of 45 points for Kennedy High in New Orleans. In JUCO ball, Perique averaged 16.7 for the season at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M. WHAT S NEW? Georgia State added a new assistant coach, Mark Macon, on the SI cover at right. The former All-American guard at Temple is still the Atlantic-10 Conference s all-time leading scorer and was No. 20 in NCAA history when he graduated in 91. Macon helped Temple to a 32-2 season and a No. 1 regular season ranking The 6-5 guard played in three NCAA Tournaments and was MVP of the Regional Tournament when they advanced to the Elite Eight. He was the No. 8 overall pick in the NBA Draft in 1991 and played six years with Denver and Detroit before playing more overseas. State had seven new players, including two junior college transfers and five freshmen, into the program. With four senior guards gone from last year, the Panthers looked closely at the play of the new guards to determine the playing rotation time for the season. Wing Ryan McBride, left, is one of those seven new faces. He has scored 173 points this season with his 35 three-point baskets in 613 minutes. Ron Larris played the most minutes of the newcomers with 761 with his 143 points. Freshmen guards Norman Mitchell and Trae Goldston logged 344 and 313 minutes, respectively.

12 GEORGIA STATE TOURNAMENT NOTES FAST FACTS ON THIS SEASON Panthers have used 12 different starting line-ups and rarely starts the same five back-to-back in the combinations. The most any five have been together is 6 times. Panthers have come-from-behind after being down at halftime to win 5 games this year. Panthers posted back-to-back CAA wins for the first time in winning at UNC Wilmington and Delaware. Panthers swept a season CAA series for the first time with two wins this year vs. UNC Wilmington. The lead has changed hands the most this year 13 times vs. Charleston, 11 times vs. Towson and WSSU, 9 with Northeastern, 8 with George Mason and Savannah, 7 times with VCU, and 6 times each vs. Hofstra, Iowa, and Alabama State. AGGRESSIVE PANTHERS FIND FREE THROW SHOOTING A PLUS In 29 games, Georgia State has stepped up to the free throw line 648 times (average 22.3 per game) with 426 made (15 per game). The team is shooting.659 for the season. The 648 attempts are 4th most in the CAA. Georgia State has MADE 426 free throws this year. which is 62 more than its opponents. State has shot 115 more free throws by its aggressive inside play to the basket. The team has already topped last year s free throw line totals of 557 (+91) attempts and 367 (+ 59) made. Junior point guard Ron Larris has played 761 minutes in his first year as the Panthers point guard and has continued his improvement since his transfer from junior college. Larri stands at +28 in the assist/turnover ratio that comes from 80 assists and just 52 turnovers. Over the past 19 games, Larris has been a plus or even in comparing the assists and turnovers in all but one game with 58 assists and just 31 turnovers for a +27. Larris, while not having enough attempts to qualify, is a solid three-point shooter with a season average of 41.7 outside the arc on 25-of-60 shooting. The southpaw is also dependable from the free throw line with a 72.7 rate on his 40- of-55 shooting. On defense, he is third on the team in steals with his 25.

In the first half of games this season, State has held 18 opponents to 31 points or less. In the CAA games, the best first halves were holding UNCW to 21 points, William & Mary to 22, Delaware to 23, VCU to 24, Drexel to 27 and UNCW, JMU, NU and ODU to 29 points. The season co-best was 21 to Alabama State as well as 22 points vs. Elon. In the second halves, State has held 11 opponents to 35 points or less. The season best was just 18 second half points at UNCW and 21 at Delaware. State limited Towson to 29 second-half points in coming from behind to force the OT and get that win on Jan.6 and held JMU to 29. State has held 8 opponents under 40% shooting for the game, including.328 and.373 to UNCW and then the season best.278 at Delaware. State has held 16 of its opponents to under 33% on threepoint shooting. They held 9 under 23% outside the arc. The 44 at Delaware were the season best, following 53 to Elon and 54 to UNCW (including the OT), which was a three-point bucket less than the 57 they allowed William & Mary to have on Jan. 8. 18 Georgia State Names Chavelo Holmes As 2007 CAA Legend Georgia State athletics has chosen Chavelo Holmes as the 2007 Legend who will be honored at the upcoming Colonial Athletic Association basketball championship. Holmes, a Panthers star in the mid 1980 s, will be honored at the Letterman s Day Homecoming Game on Saturday, Feb. 17, and then travel with the team to the CAA Championships on Mar. 2 at the annual Awards Banquet for his recognition by the league with a Legend from every member school. It actually brought tears to my eyes to know that I was remembered and appreciated, Holmes noted. This was a great moment to share with my family and for my four daughters to understand dad was once a good athlete and college student. When he walked on the campus of Georgia State without a scholarship, he was a nobody who just wanted to play basketball. When he walked off the campus, he was a somebody who had just scored the most points and grabbed the most rebounds in school history. And, most important, he had earned a college degree. It was in 1981 that Chavelo Holmes had earned a college scholarship at Georgia State after a simple summer workout in the gym with the new head coach, Jim Jarrett. He wasn t a hot-shot recruit but he knew he could succeed if given a chance. Holmes had played his prep basketball at Elmwood High in Buffalo, N. Y., but when his family moved to Atlanta, he began classes at Georgia State on his own. By the time the 6-4, 180-pound Holmes finished the season, he had set the all-time Georgia State record for points scored (1,375) and for most rebounds (505) as well as playing in the most games ever (105). Twenty years later, Holmes still ranks No. 3 in scoring, No. 6 in games played and No. 9 in rebounds. As a Panthers freshmen, the youngster averaged a quiet 6.6 points a game, but did earn 13 starts. As a sophomore, Holmes led the team with a stellar 18.3 points per game and a 5.7 rebound average. His 495 points scored were a new school record for a season and his per game average was sixth-best ever. The sophomore had one game he can always remember, and truthfully say, that he outscored Michael Jordan. When the Panthers went to Chapel Hill to play the No. 3 ranked North Carolina Tar Heels, Holmes led Georgia State with 20 points. Number 23 for Carolina and soon-to-be NBA legend Jordan scored just 16 points that evening. That sophomore year, Holmes had a 36-point game (vs. Baptist) that was the sixth highest scoring game in school history at that time. As a junior, Holmes scored 383 points on the season and was on the team that went to Tennessee and upset the Volunteers, 52-50, in a major upset. The 0-5 Panthers had gone into Rocky Top country after losing to Oklahoma and SMU by more than 30 points. Holmes upped his personal best for a game to 38 points (vs. Florida A&M) that tied for third most in school history. His senior season saw him average 13.9 points a game to up his final scoring total to 1,375 points and made him the highest scorer in Panthers history. Chavelo Holmes is one of the best pure shooters that Georgia State has ever had, 24-year Panthers radio veteran Dave Cohen remembers. And he played before the three-point shot, so some of his baskets counted as two s that today would count as three s. Once a player, always a player, Holmes still plays basketball in an Over- 35 Atlanta City League where he still shows his scoring abilities and thrives on the competition. Holmes earned his Georgia State degree in urban studies and has worked two decades in Atlanta as a real estate manager of multi-family homes and apartment complexes and is also a licensed realtor. Holmes notes that one of his primary goals at this time is getting his four daughters through college to earn their degrees.

For the next 5 straight games and 6 of 7 games, they had 12 or fewer turnovers in each game. The only one over 12 was 15. Then, they had a stretch of 7 games when they had turned the ball over 16, 18, 14, 23, 16, 22 and 15 times, an average of 17.7 per game. To finish the year, Panthers had a season low 10 turnovers in back-to-back games with Elon in the BracketBuster and at George Mason (Games 27-28). In the season finale with VCU, the Panthers had 17 costly turnovers, including five straight possessions in the first half.

They were receiving votes in the national poll and are # 59 in RPI. The Rams are No. 40 in the voting in the ESPN/USA Today poll and No. 41 in the AP poll. Old Dominion started strong with a win at No. 8 Georgetown (75-62). The 23-7 Monarchs lost a four-point decision to Clemson and were receiving votes. They are on a current 11-game winning streak and #33 in RPI after the BracketBuster win over Toledo and a strength of schedule of 73. They are No. 38 in this week s AP poll. Drexel, 22-7, has claimed wins over No. 23 Syracuse, Villanova, Saint Joseph s, George Mason,Toledo, Fairleigh-Dickinson and Vermont. They ended Hofstra s 28-game home win streak Thursday. They had received votes in the national polls earlier and are #42 in RPI after the BracketBuster win over Creighton. Hofstra is 22-8 but just a whisker from 25 wins. The Pride lost by one-point at Hawaii, by two points in overtime to Manhattan, and by six points in the opener at Charlotte. They had won 28 straight regular season home games before an OT loss to Drexel. They lost at Syracuse. They are #69 in RPI after the win over Holy Cross. George Mason, the team most eyes are on after its Final Four run, is with a trio of close non-league losses. The Patriots led at the half, but dropped a nailbiter to then No. 17 Wichita State (4-0), also lost on free throws with 7.5 seconds left before 15,455 at Creighton and lost by three to Bucknell. They also beat Mississippi State and lost to Duke. The Patriots lost in OT to ODU and by two points to ODU.
