PANTHERS RETURN HOME TO HOST FIRST-PLACE GEORGE MASON After three straight road games, Georgia State returns home for two games this week, beginning with Wednesday s contest against the Colonial Athletic Association s firstplace team, George Mason. The game tips at 7 p.m. at the GSU Sports Arena, and live radio coverage is available on WRAS-FM 88.5 and WMLB-AM GSU (9-14, 3-8 CAA) dropped a pair of tough road game at Old Dominion and at VCU last week. George Mason (15-7, 10-1 CAA) has won seven straight games to stand atop the CAA standings, holding a one-game lead over Old Dominion and Northeastern. The Patriots defeated Georgia State, 52-49, three weeks ago in Fairfax, Va.. We re very happy to be back at home after three on the road, but we ve got a very tough opponent in George Mason - what a welcome home! said GSU head coach Rod Barnes. We played a very close game with them at their place. Our kids our playing hard and competing, and we re defending well enough to win if we can find a way to score a few more points. We ve been right there in the second half with opportunities, but we re missing some layups and easy shots, we re missing free throws at the wrong time. We re a team in desperate need of a win, and it s going to take 40 minutes of really good basketball to do that, continued Barnes. Now in his third season at Georgia State, Barnes has a veteran team that features six seniors, headlined by all-conference guard Joe Dukes. Dukes, a 6-1 senior from Cuthbert, Ga., is a preseason selection to the All-CAA second team after earning third-team honors a year ago. The dynamic guard averages 13.7 points per game, along with 5.5 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.7 steals per game. He ranks 11th in the CAA in scoring as well as fourth in steals, 14th in assists, 13th in field goal percentage (.415) and 19th in rebounding. Dukes, who plays both guard positions, is joined in the backcourt by 6-0 senior Trae Goldston. The Decatur, Ga., native, averages 11.0 ppg (20th CAA), including 2.0 treys per game (seventh CAA) and a 41-percent accuracy rate from long range (fifth CAA). He has moved into second place in GSU history with 183 career threepointers. Marques Johnson, a transfer from NC State, is the Panthers starting point guard, and the 6-5 junior averages 2.4 ppg, 1.9 rpg and 2.4 apg. Johnson, who grabbed six steals against VCU, shares time at the point with Dukes and with top backup James Fields. Fields, a 6-3 sophomore, is a strong defender who averages 3.4 ppg and 1.5 rpg. He scored 10 points, his high for a CAA game, last time out at VCU. In the post, the Panthers use a primary rotation of three seniors in 6-10 Xavier Hansbro, 6-7 Trey Hampton and 6-6 Ousman Krubally. Hampton averages 7.3 ppg, 5.2 rpg and a team-leading 1.3 blocks per game, but over the last 12 games, he has improved to 9.8 ppg and 1.8 bpg while shooting 58 percent from the floor. Hansbro is third on the team in scoring at 8.2 ppg, along with 4.1 rpg. Georgia State s top rebounder is Krubally at 5.7 pg (16th in the CAA), along with 5.8 points per game. After missing two games due to illness, he returned to post a career-high Jan. 23 at Delaware with 16 points and 11 rebounds, his fourth doubledouble of the season. Promising freshman post player James Vincent, 6-10, is showing progress, averaging 6.0 ppg and 2.0 for his last three games, including a 10-point effort versus VCU. He season averages are 1.8 ppg and 1.8 rpg. On the wing, Barnes can also turn to 6-7 senior Kevin Lott (2.3 ppg, 1.6 rpg), 6-5 sophomore Jihad Ali (4.1 ppg, 2.6 rpg), or 6-4 junior Dante Curry (2.4 ppg). All three have modest averages but have been productive in recent games. On Jan. 20 against UNCW, Lott came off the bench for a season-high 10 points, and Curry scored nine along with a key block on a potential game-tying shot late in the game. He added six points against Delaware, and Ali scored a season-high 11 points against the Blue Hens, and then had eight points and five rebounds last game at VCU. Preseason all-caa selection Cam Long leads the George Mason, averaging 13.6 ppg, 3.5 rpg and 3.0 apg. Forward Ryan Pearson adds 12.1 ppg and 6.8 rpg. Any time you re 10-1 in our league, you re playing very well, Barnes said of the Patriots. They figure out ways to win. Cam Long is probably the biggest reason because he s so consistent, and they ve had different guys play well off the bench. THE SERIES WITH GEORGE MASON George Mason holds a 5-1 lead in the series, which began when Georgia State joined the CAA in This season marks the first year that the two schools are scheduled to play home-and-home. The two teams met last month at George Mason, and the Patriots earned a victory. After the Panthers Xavier Hansbro tied the game with a three-pointer with 29 seconds left, Ryan Pearson sank two free throws with nine seconds remaining for Mason s winning points. Georgia State had a chance to tie but Dante Curry s baseline jumper was off the mark with six seconds to go. Cam Long corralled the rebound for George Mason and made one of two free throws for the final margin. Joe Dukes, who got off a final three-point try from half court that hit the rim, led GSU with 14 points eight rebounds and five assists, and Hansbro added 12 points. Georgia State s lone victory in the series came on Jan. 2, 2008, as Leonard Mendez s 14-foot jumper on the game s final play lifted the Panthers to a victory at the GSU Sports Arena. That was the last time the two schools met in Atlanta. George Mason won the first three meetings, including a overtime victory in the 2006 CAA Tournament by the Final Four-bound Patriots, and Mason also captured last year s game, at the Patriot Center. The last five games between Georgia State and George Mason have been decided by a total of 22 points. GSU head coach Rod Barnes has a 2-3 record against George Mason. Barnes Ole Miss squad fell to the Patriots, 71-70, on Dec. 1, 2001 and then won at Mason, 56-49, the following year.

3 Georgia State Basketball Notes, Page 3 HEAD COACH ROD BARNES A new era in Georgia State basketball is underway with former Naismith National Coach of the Year Rod Barnes leading the Panther program. In his first two years in Atlanta, Barnes brought renewed energy and interest to the Georgia State program while laying the groundwork for future success. Now in his third season at the helm, Barnes looks for his Panthers to build on their strong finish in , when they won five of their final seven games. GSU s 8-10 record in the Colonial Athletic Association and eighth-place finish represent its best showing since joining the league four years ago. Barnes, who spent eight years as the head coach at Mississippi, is an 18-year veteran of college coaching and was an assistant coach in at Oklahoma. He was honored as the Naismith Coach of the Year as well as Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year in , when he led Ole Miss to its most successful season ever. His squad set a school-record for wins with a 27-8 record, advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the only time in school history and achieved a final national ranking of No. 9. A former All-Southeastern Conference player at Ole Miss, Barnes is the only person to earn All-SEC honors as a player and then be named SEC Coach of the Year. Barnes compiled a record in eight seasons at Ole Miss ( ), guiding the Rebels to four postseason bids, including three trips to the NCAA Tournament. Barnes first Ole Miss squad recorded the first NCAA Tournament win in school history with a 1999 first-round victory over Villanova. Two years later, the Rebels picked up NCAA Tournament victories over Iona and Notre Dame to reach the Sweet 16. He also spent five seasons as an assistant coach at Ole Miss under Rob Evans before being elevated to head coach on April 9, In addition to coaching the only three NCAA Tournament victories in school history, Barnes was part of five of the six NCAA appearances in Ole Miss annals as head or assistant coach. A native of Satartia, Miss., and 1988 graduate of Ole Miss, Barnes, 43, began his career as an assistant coach at Livingston for three years before returning to his alma mater in Rod Barnes as a Head Coach Mississippi (NCAA 2nd round) Mississippi (NIT 2nd round) Mississippi (NCAA Sweet 16) Mississippi (NCAA) Mississippi Mississippi Mississippi Mississippi Total, Mississippi Georgia State Georgia State Georgia State Total, Georgia State Career Record HAMPTON ON THE MARK Senior Trey Hampton is playing the best basketball of his career. Over the last 12 games, the rugged post player is averaging 9.8 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game while shooting 58 percent from the field Hampton had a double-double in the Jan. 20 win over UNC Wilmington with 17 points and 10 rebounds and the followed with 11 points at Delaware. The Hoover, Ala., native scored a career-best 22 points on 9-for-10 shooting in the Jan. 2 win over Towson. He also had four rebounds and four blocked shots. He scored 14 points in the second half, including several crucial baskets as well as a key steal late in the game as the Panthers gutted out the victory. One game earlier, Hampton was 8-for-8 from the field in the Panthers Dec. 22 victory over Georgia Southern, in which he notched 16 points, seven rebounds and four blocks. He began this stretch with 11 points, six rebounds, two blocks on Dec. 19 versus Eastern Michigan. HOME WINNING STREAK WAS THIRD-LONGEST AT GSU Georgia State s loss to Drexel on Jan. 4 snapped an eight-game winning streak at the Panthers on-campus home. The streak included wins over CAA foes Delaware, UNC Wilmington, Hofstra and Towson. That stretch is the third-longest Sports Arena winning streak in school history. Under Lefty Driesell, the Panthers won 25 straight games at the Sports Arena from Feb. 24, 2000 through Dec. 12, Driesell s program also won nine straight from Jan. 5, 1998 through Nov. 21, GOLDSTON NAMED CAA PLAYER OF THE WEEK Senior guard Trae Goldston was named Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week on Dec. 28, 2009 for his 28-point performance in the Panthers Dec. 22 win over Georgia Southern. The honor is the second for Goldston, who was also tabbed the league s Player of the Week last Feb. 16 following back-to-back 20- point games against Towson and UNC Wilmington. In the Panthers only action of the week, the 6-0 Goldston poured in a career-high 28 points to lead a 20-point victory over Georgia Southern. He nailed six three-pointers, going 6-for-11 from beyond the arc and 11- of-16 overall. HOT SHOOTING VS. GEORGIA SOUTHERN Georgia State turned in its best offensive effort of the season, and perhaps its best in three seasons under head coach Rod Barnes, in its victory over Georgia Southern (Dec. 22). The Panthers shot 62.1 percent from the field, their best figure since a 62.2 percent effort versus Louisiana Lafayette on Nov. 29, Georgia State also achieved season highs with 20 assists (on 36 field goals) and eight three-pointers while outrebounding the Eagles, GOLDSTON IS GOLDEN AGAINST EAGLES... AGAIN Senior guard Trae Goldston totalled 50 points in back-to-back games against the Eastern Michigan Eagles (22 points) and the Georgia Southern Eagles (career-high 28 points). Against Eastern Michigan, Goldston went 5-for-8 from beyond the arc. He scored 15 points in the second half on four treys and an old-fashioned three-point play as the Panthers erased a seven-point deficit in the final eight minutes. His final triple put GSU ahead, 62-60, with 2:54 to play. Goldston s efforts against EMU and Georgia Southern give him 10 career games of at least 20 points and 25 with 15 or more points.

That was followed by a stretch of five out of six at home, then are playing four out of six, including three straight, on the road. Now the Panthers are home for two games this week, and then back on the road for two next week. The Panthers season-opening road stretch included a grueling segment that saw the Panthers play five away games in seven days. The Panthers were in Daytona Beach, Fla., for the Glenn Wilkes Classic from Nov , and then participated in South Alabama Thanksgiving Tournament, Nov in Mobile, Ala. Georgia State is coming off a two-game swing in Tallahassee, Fla., for games at Florida A&M and at Florida State. The FSU game is one of two ACC road tests for the Panthers, who opened the season at NC State. POMP AND CIRCUMSTANCE Starting forward Trey Hampton is officially a Georgia State graduate as the Hoover, Ala., native earned his degree in sociology following the fall semester. He is enrolled in classes toward a second degree for the spring semester. Hampton is one of six seniors on this year s team. The other five seniors are all scheduled to graduate this spring. JOHNSON STEPS IN Marques Johnson, a transfer from NC State, has stepped into the starting lineup at point guard. Johnson made his first start in a Georgia State uniform Dec. 5 against James Madison. The 6-5 point guard played 37 minutes, contributing four points, three assists and three steals while effectively running the team. Johnson s presence allows all-caa guard Joe Dukes to play off the ball to capitalize on his scoring ability. The Fort Wayne, Ind., native followed with four points, five assists, three rebounds and a steal in his second start against Florida A&M. In Georgia State s one-point win over Eastern Michigan, he hit a foul line jumper with 57 seconds left--his only points of the game--to give the Panthers the lead for good. Then he handed out a career-best seven assists in GSU s win over Georgia Southern. Johnson also had a strong effort off the bench in the Panthers win over Utah Valley, when he tallied six points, five rebounds and five assists. CAREER HIGH FOR DUKES Joe Dukes scored a career-high 26 points in the Panthers loss at South Alabama. The 6-1 senior hit 12 of 19 shots from the field while contributing six rebounds, three assists and two steals. Dukes previous high was 24 points, set in last year s CAA Championships versus VCU. Dukes has topped the 20-point mark five times this season, most recently with a 23-point outing at Delaware. He also scored 22 at Florida State. X MARKS THE SPOT Senior forward Xavier Hansbro scored a career-high 21 points to lead Georgia State to a victory over Utah Valley in the first round of the South Alabama Thanksgiving Tournament. He scored nine straight points on two layups and five free throws in the Panthers pivotal second-half run that turned a one-point game into a lead. He also had seven rebounds and two blocked shots. Hansbro went to the free throw line 17 times in the game, just one shy of the Georgia State record. The only Panther with more free throw attempts in a game was Ron Ricketts nearly 40 years ago; he had 18 attempts vs. Southwestern Memphis on Jan. 20, SCHOOL RECORD DEFENSIVE EFFORT Georgia State turned in perhaps the top defensive effort in school annals in a victory over Howard at the Glenn Wilkes Classic. The Panthers set a school-record for fewest points allowed. The previous low by a GSU opponent was 40 points by Jacksonville State on Feb. 11, Georgia State held the Bison to just 25.3 percent shooting from the field with just 11 field goals for the game.

He leads Georgia State and ranks 12th in the Colonial Athletic Association with 5.7 rebounds per game, including 3.0 per game on the offensive glass. Over this career, approximately half of his rebounds are offensive. After missing two games due to illness, Krubally returned to action against Delaware and responded with a career-high 16 points and 11 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season. The slender, 6-6 senior opened the season with his first career double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds against NC State. DUKES TABBED TO PRESEASON ALL-CAA TEAM Senior guard Joe Dukes was selected to the preseason all-colonial Athletic Association second team, selected by media, head coaches and sports information directors and announced at the league s annual media day. Last season, the 6-1 native of Cuthbert, Ga., made an immediate impact in his first season with the Panthers after transferring from Wake Forest and earned third-team all- CAA honors. He ranked in the Top 15 in the league in scoring (12.8 ppg, 14th), assists (4.3 apg, 5th), steals (1.7 spg, 5th) and FG% (8th,.439). He was also the team s secondleading rebounder at 4.7 per game. THREE EARLY SIGNEES Georgia State has signed three players in the November early signing period. All three are from the state of Georgia, including Atlanta-area guards DeVonta White and Javonte Maynor and Augusta forward Harold Doby. White and Maynor were named to the preseason All-Metro team by the Atlanta Tipoff Club. Harold Doby Javonte Maynor DeVonta White F, 6-6, Augusta, Ga., Oldsmar Christian (Fla.) G, 6-1, Snellville, Ga., South Gwinnett HS G, 5-11, Roswell, Ga., Centennial HS SIX-PACK OF SENIORS The Panthers are easily the most experienced Georgia State team in Rod Barnes tenure, featuring six seniors. Joe Dukes, Trae Goldston, Trey Hampton, Xavier Hansbro, Ousman Krubally and Kevin Lott are all key contributors. The six seniors account for 80 percent of Georgia State s points and 74 percent of the team s rebounds. One senior, Trey Hampton, earned his degree following the fall semester, and the remaining five are scheduled to graduate this spring. THREE GAME-WINNING TREYS FOR TRAE Junior guard Trae Goldston hit two game-winning three-pointers last season and three in his career. All three have come at the Georgia State Sports Arena. Most recent was his winning trey against UNC Wilmington on Feb. 14, 2009, which came with just five seconds left. With the score tied, he took a feed from Joe Dukes and nailed a trey from the corner with just five seconds left to lift Georgia State to the victory. On Jan. 3, 2009, Goldston s three with just 11 seconds left gave Georgia State a victory over Old Dominion. After ODU had taken a two-point lead with 37 seconds left, Goldston took a pass from Dukes and hit from the right wing. On Feb. 16, 2008 against Northeastern, Goldston nailed a trey with 1.5 seconds left to give the Panthers a victory.

6 Georgia State Basketball Notes, Page 6 MAKING THE GRADE The Georgia State basketball team has excelled in the classroom under head coach Rod Barnes. In Barnes first two seasons, all four seniors who finished their careers graduated. Among this year s crop of six seniors, Trey Hampton graduated this fall, and the other five are schedule to earn their degrees this spring. Ousman Krubally (2009), Kevin Lott (2009) and Jihad Ali (2008) have earned the Colonial Athletic Association Commissioner s Academic Award under Barnes. The Panthers have posted a grade point average of 2.75 or better for three straight semesters under Barnes, including the fall Krubally made the Athletic Director s Honor Roll for the fall semester. 441 AND COUNTING Georgia State has made at least one three-point field goal in 441 straight games, dating back to the season. The last team to hold the Panthers without a trey was Stetson on Feb. 18, FROM THE LEFT The Georgia State roster features four left-handed shooters in seniors Trae Goldston, Trey Hampton and Ousman Krubally and sophomore Jihad Ali.
