Georgia State made its second NCAA Tournament in the last four years in 2018 and returns four of five starters. GSU has finished in the top two of the final regular season conference standings four times in the last five years. Thursday will serve as Head Coach Ron Hunter s annual Barefoot for Barefeet game to raise awareness for Samaritan s Feet. He will coach the game barefoot. Hunter is 11-0 when coaching games without shoes. Georgia State and Texas State are tied for first place in the Sun Belt at 5-1. The Panthers handed the Bobcats their lone loss of Sun Belt play back on Jan. 5. This will mark the second time this year Georgia State faces an opponent either in the top 25 or receiving votes. Kansas State was No. 24 in the country when the Panthers went to Manhattan in December. Both programs are currently ranked among the CollegeInsider Mid-Major Top 25. Texas State is currently No. 17, while Georgia State is No. 20. The Panthers are in Sun Belt Conference regular season games since rejoining the league in GSU has won 8-straight home games dating back to last year. The Panthers are one of just 34 programs in the country still undefeated at home this season. Georgia State had its 7-game winning streak snapped by Troy last Saturday. It was tied for the 7th-longest winning streak in program history. Georgia State s 14-5 start is the second-best 19-game start in program history. Georgia State won nine non-conference games, tied for the most in program history. Georgia State faced five opponents who competed in the 2018 NCAA Tournament in the first 11 games of the season. (Montana, St. Bonaventure, Creighton, Alabama, and No. 24 Kansas State) all away from home going 2-3. GSU has beaten two Power 5 opponents in one season for the second time in program history (Georgia and Alabama). Those wins are the only two P5 wins for Sun Belt schools this season. GSU s 21-point halftime comeback at Alabama is tied for the 12th-largest halftime comeback in NCAA history. Over the last 11 months, three Panthers have made at least eight 3-pointers in a game. Malik Benlevi knocked down eight against UGA (11/21), while Jeff Thomas did it against Mercer (11/13) earlier this year. Last season, Devin Mitchell made 10 3-pointers at Little Rock. Since the season, GSU has won more games (124) than any other NCAA Division I team in Georgia. Junior D Marcus Simonds is averaging 18.1 points per game for his career which currently ranks No. 14 among all active NCAA players and is tops in the Sun Belt. He has made 551 career field goals which is No. 39 among all active players and the No. 2 junior in the country. Simonds was named the Sun Belt Preseason Player of the Year after earning AP All-America Honorable Mention last season. He earned Sun Belt Player of the Week honors on Nov. 12. Jeff Thomas (182/4th), Devin Mitchell (176/6th) and Malik Benlevi (151/10th) all rank among Georgia State career top 10 in 3-point field goals made. GSU is one of just 13 programs in the country to feature two assistant coaches who have NCAA D1 head coach experience (McCallum - Ball State/Houston/Detroit and Williams - Tennessee State). Over the five-plus year stretch, the Panthers are in Sun Belt Conference regular season games. The 70 wins are the most in the league during that time. BRINGING MARCH MADNESS TO NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER Georgia State faced five teams that played in the 2018 NCAA Tournament during the non-conference slate. It began on Nov. 9, at Montana as the Panthers lost a hardfought game The Panthers topped St. Bonaventure and lost to Creighton in the Cayman Islands Classic. Using a 21-point comeback and game winning buzzer beater, the Panthers topped Alabama (Dec. 4) Despite leading with eight minutes to play, the Panthers fell to No. 24 Kansas State on Dec. 15. DON T CALL IT A COMEBACK...JUST CALL IT A VICTORY Georgia State topped Alabama on Dec. 4, on a game-winning 3-point buzzer beater from senior Malik Benlevi. However, it was how the Panthers earned the win that might be even more remarkable and why it led ESPN s SportsCenter. The Panthers trailed by 21 points at halftime and by 22 points with 18:57 to play in the second half. Here are a couple of notes from the NCAA record book: 21 point halftime deficit - t12th-largest comeback in NCAA history 22 point second half deficit - t32nd-largest comeback in NCAA history SEC CHAMPS? Georgia State went 2-0 against the SEC this fall earning a win over Georgia to garner third place in the Cayman Islands Classic and an win at Alabama. Ironically those two programs played for a national championship in football last season and an SEC title in early December. The two Power 5 wins are just the second time Georgia State has defeated two P5 programs in the same season in program history. The only other time in program history it happened in the same year was when the Panthers topped Georgia to open the season and then defeated Wisconsin in the NCAA Tournament. WINNING STREAKS Georgia State currently is riding an 8-game home court winning streak. The Panthers recently had a 9-game conference, 7-game overall and 3-game road winning streaks snapped a Troy last Saturday. The 8-game home-court winning streak is tied for 38th longest in the NCAA. RPI CONTINUES TO CLIMB According to CBS as of Jan. 23, Georgia State s RPI is No. 42 in the country. Although there is a lot of basketball to play, the Panthers have been projected as high as a No. 12-seed in most NCAA Tournament mock brackets. LAST TIME OUT A 3-pointer by Troy s Jordan Varnado with 1.7 seconds to play proved to be the game winner as the Trojans snapped Georgia State s seven-game winning streak on Saturday afternoon at Trojan Arena. Junior D Marcus Simonds led Georgia State with 28 points on 11-of-24 shooting but missed the first-end of a one-and-one with 13 seconds to play, giving Troy an opportunity at the game winning basket. Varnado just missed a double-double for Troy finishing with 32 points and nine rebounds. Alex Hicks also just missed a double-double for the Trojans with eight points and nine rebounds, while Charles Norman came off the bench to score 15. Devin Mitchell continued his hot play from 3-point range, finishing with 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting with four 3-pointers. Mitchell has made 44 3-pointers in the last 11 games.

3 Georgia State Men s Basketball Notes (page 3) JANUARY SUCCESS Before the loss to Troy last Saturday, Georgia State had won 18-straight games in the month of January. The Panthers were 5-0 in Jan and went 7-0 in Jan Georgia State also won its final six January games of WHAT A NOVEMBER! Georgia State won five games in November, tying a school record for the most wins in the month. Only in November 2017 and November 2014 have the Panthers won five games in November. Both of those seasons ended with appearances in the NCAA Tournament. BEST 19-GAME STARTS Georgia State s 14-5 start through 19 games isn t the best 19-game start in program history, but it is right near the top. Here are the best 19-game starts in program history. Season Record Postseason NCAA (2nd round) TBD NCAA (1st round) CIT (2nd round) None NCAA (3rd round) CIT RECORD-TYING NON-CONFERENCE SLATE Georgia State closed the non-conference season tying a school-record with nine wins. In the last five years, Georgia State has earned the league s top postseason award three times as Simonds joined R.J. Hunter ( and ) as the only Panthers to garner the recognition. #WE-RUN-THIS-STATE If it wasn t enough that Georgia State has more wins (124) than any other NCAA Division I program in the state of Georgia since the start of the (see page 4 for details), the Panthers now have also beaten everyone in the state since that time. Georgia State dominated Georgia to earn third place in the Cayman Islands Classic earlier this season. The Panthers also have wins over Mercer and Kennesaw State (scrimmage) this season. Last year, the Panthers knocked off Georgia Tech in an exhibition game for hurricane relief. Head coach Ron Hunter is now 20-6 against teams from the state of Georgia since taking over the Panthers for the season. FROM WAY DOWNTOWN Senior Devin Mitchell earned All-Sun Belt Preseason Second Team honors a year after earning All-Sun Belt Third Team honors. Mitchell finished last season with 98 3-pointers, second-most in school history and just two shy of R.J. Hunter s school record 100 treys. After missing the first seven games of the season due to injury, Mitchell is 44-of-89 in his first 12 games back from 3-point range. MAJOR PRESEASON/MIDSEASON RECOGNITION After earning Sun Belt Player of the Year and All-Sun Belt First Team honors last year, junior D Marcus Simonds has picked up major honors this season Lute Olson National Player of the Year Watch List (for the second year in a row) - Only Sun Belt player to make the list Lou Henson National Mid-Major Player of the Year Watch List (for the second year in a row) Lou Henson National Mid-Major Mid-Season Player of the Year Watch List (for the second year in a row) Sun Belt Preseason Player of the Year All-Sun Belt Preseason First Team PLAYER OF THE WEEK Junior D Marcus Simonds continued to garner attention after just the first week of the season earning Sun Belt Player of the Week honors on Nov. 13. 4 Georgia State Men s Basketball Notes (page 4) HOME SWEET HOME When coach Ron Hunter took over the Panthers, one of the first things he proclaimed was that the GSU Sports Arena would become one of the toughest places in the country. So far, he has been correct. The Panthers are in the comfy confines of the Sports Arena since his arrival. The Panthers have gone at home the last five-plus seasons. During that span, Georgia State put together an 18-game winning streak which ranks second-longest in school history. HALL OF FAME WORTHY Head coach Ron Hunter was inducted into the Miami University Cradle of Coaches in October. Hunter starred for the program in the early 80 s leading them to three NCAA tournaments in four years. It was announced on Nov. 29, that he will be inducted into the IUPUI Hall of Fame Class of 2019 on Feb. 2, 2019 in Indianapolis. He led the Jaguars for 17 years and is still their all-time winningest coach. HEAD OF THE CLASS Ron Hunter became the all-time winningest coach at Georgia State in and now has 161 victories in seven-plus seasons. He has shattered every wins mark in school history with the exception of the single-season record of 29 wins held by Charles Lefty Driesell. Hunter surpassed Bob Reinhart for the record on Dec. 10, Ironically, Reinhart, now a scout for the Miami Heat, was in the building when Hunter tied the record. ELITE GROUP When head coach Ron Hunter won his 108th game at GSU in 2016, he joined an elite group of coaches who are considered the all-time wins leader at multiple schools. Hunter coached IUPUI for 17 years and is still the all-time wins leader for the Jaguars. The list of coaches who lead at multiple schools includes: Ronnie Arrow - Texas A&M-CC and South Alabama Jim Calhoun - Northeastern and Connecticut Leonard Hamilton - Miami (Fla.) and Florida State Lou Henson - New Mexico State and Illinois Ron Hunter - IUPUI and Georgia State Gregg Marshall - Winthrop and Wichita State Johnny Orr - Michigan and Iowa State ON TO THE PROS Under head coach Ron Hunter, the number of former Georgia State players to go on to play professionally has greatly increased. Among the highlights will be the game at Alabama (SEC Network+) and at Louisiana (ESPN2). The Cayman Islands Classic aired on Stadium, while the road game at Kansas State was on Fox Sports KC. This marked the 12th straight year Hunter has gone barefoot for a game dating back to his days at IUPUI. As part of his work with Samaritan s Feet, Georgia State has traveled to South Africa (2012), Costa Rica (2014), Dominican Republic (2016) and Spain (2018) to take part in shoe distributions with the organization.
