Saint Mary s and San Francisco both earned NIT berths. H The WCC matched a league record with four total teams competing in the NCAA and NIT fields with four, matching 1989 when Loyola Marymount and Saint Mary s (NCAA) and Pepperdine and Santa Clara (NIT) accomplished the feat. H Pacific and San Diego each accepted bids into the College Insiders Postseason Tournament (CIT). H Through March 17, WCC teams boast a strong 66.9 winning percentage (83-41) vs. non-conference foes. See page 2 for the complete non-conference breakdown. H WCC Teams can really shoot and score the basketball. The Conference ranks fifth among Division I leaders in scoring (73.89) and field goal percentage (45.52), fourth in free throw percentage (71.29) and leads the nation in 3-point field goal percentage (36.67). H Loyola Marymount s Anthony Ireland ranks fourth among NCAA active career scoring leaders with 2,169 points and is 18th in assists 555. Ireland is the only active Division I player with 2,000 points and 500 assists. H Santa Clara s Evan Roquemore ranks 14th among NCAA active career assists leaders with 578. Again For the third straight season and for the fourth time in five seasons, the West Coast Conference will send multiple teams to the NCAA Tournament, as the NCAA Division I Men s Basketball Committee revealed its bracket on Sunday. Two WCC teams BYU and Gonzaga - will compete in the field of 68 both in the West Region. WCC regular season and tournament champion Gonzaga University (28-6 overall, 15-3 WCC) earned the No. 8 seed and will open play against No. 9 Oklahoma State Friday in San Diego. The Bulldogs won the WCC Tournament with a victory over No. 2 seed BYU. The No. 10 Cougars (23-11 overall, 13-5 WCC) earned an at-large bid to the NCAA field for the second time in three seasons and will face No. 7 Oregon on Thursday in Milwaukee. Welcome Back Pacific makes its much-anticipated return to the West Coast Conference for the season after an absence of more than four decades. A founding member of the then-california Basketball Association, Pacific owns an outstanding men s basketball legacy, highlighted by four NCAA Tournament appearances since The Tigers won the 2013 Big West regular season and tournament championship last season en route to the NCAA Tournament. Pacific won the WCC in its last season before departing the league in , going 20-8, Meeting High Expectations How strong is the West Coast Conference in men s basketball? Only four Division I programs have compiled 25 or more wins in each of the last five seasons. Two of those programs (Gonzaga, Saint Mary s) reside in the WCC. The other two are perennial basketball powers Duke and Kansas. BYU s string of six straight campaigns with at least 25 wins was snapped as the Cougars went in en route to an NIT Semifinals appearance. Four WCC Teams Compete in the Postseason Four West Coast Conference teams advanced to the postseason. For the second consecutive season and for the fourth time in five years, two WCC squads competed in the NCAA Tournament, headlined by No. 1 overall national seed Gonzaga, while Saint Mary s earned an at-large berth. BYU played in the NIT, advancing to the semifinals at Madison Square Garden. Santa Clara won the CBI Tournament, capturing its second postseason championship in three seasons. In addition, new WCC member Pacific qualified for the 2013 NCAA Tournament after winning the Big West regular season and tournament titles. Haws and Pangos Named to Naismith Trophy Early Season Top-50 Watch List BYU junior guard Tyler Haws and Gonzaga junior guard Kevin Pangos are among the 50 candidates named by the Atlanta Tipoff Club to the Naismith Trophy Early Season Top-50 as basketball s Player of the Year. With the two selections, it marks the second straight year the West Coast Conference has multiple players on the early season top-50 list. Last year Matthew Dellavedova (Saint Mary s) and Pangos appeared on the initial candidate list. Haws and Pangos Named to Wooden Award Preseason Top-50 Watch List BYU junior guard Tyler Haws and Gonzaga junior guard Kevin Pangos are among the 50 candidates announced by the Los Angeles Athletic Club for the Wooden Award Preseason Top-50 as basketball s Player of the Year. This marks the second straight year the West Coast Conference has multiple players on the preseason top-50 list. Last year Brandon Davies (BYU), Matthew Dellavedova (Saint Mary s) and Elias Harris (Gonzaga) made the first list. Ireland and Pangos Named to Bob Cousy Award Watch List LMU senior Anthony Ireland and Gonzaga junior Kevin Pangos were named to the watch list of candidates for the 2014 Bob Cousy Collegiate Point Guard of the Year Award, as announced by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Named for Hall of Famer and former Boston Celtic Bob Cousy, the award recognizes the top collegiate point guards.

3 2014 WEST COAST CONFERENCE HONORS / CHAMPIONSHIP WCC Player of the Year - Tyler Haws, BYU Tyler Haws is the first BYU student-athlete selected as WCC Player of the Year in its three seasons in the conference. Haws averaged 23.5 points per game, while shooting 48.0 percent from the field during league play. Haws turned in the highest scoring game since 1990 when he scored 48 in a triple overtime game at Portland and scored at least 20 points 18 times and enters the 2014 WCC Championship with 1,855 career points in 100 career games, good for 15th place on the league s career scoring chart. WCC Defensive Player of the Year - Brendan Lane, Pepperdine Brendan Lane is the third Pepperdine student-athlete to capture Defensive Player of the Year and the first since A member of the WCC All-Academic Team, the senior forward led the league in blocked shots (2.5). In addition, Lane averaged 12.0 points on 49.7 percent shooting from the field to go along with 6.6 rebounds during league play as the Waves posted an upper echelon finish after being picked last in the preseason poll. WCC Crons Newcomer of the Year - Jared Brownridge, Santa Clara Jared Brownridge is the eighth Bronco student-athlete named Newcomer of the year and the first since Kevin Foster in Brownridge turned in a prolific offensive season and ranked second in scoring at 18.4 points per game during league contests. Brownridge posted back-to-back 30-point nights during league play and scored a career-high 38 points at Pepperdine. WCC Coach of the Year - Rex Walters, San Francisco Rex Walters is the 11th San Francisco mentor to collect Coach of the Year honors and the first since Pete Barry picked up the hardware in Walters guided San Francisco to just its second 20-win campaign since both coming under Walters guidance. 4 WCC Bullets Loyola Marymount s Anthony Ireland became the eighth WCC player (fifth Lion) to surpass 2,000 career points with 24 points at Pepperdine (2/1/14). The last WCC player to reach 2,000 was Santa Clara s Kevin Foster ( ), who scored 2,423 (second all-time). BYU s Tyler Haws scored a career-high 48 points in a triple overtime game at Portland (1/23/14), the most by a WCC player since Hank Gathers scored 50 against San Francisco (2/4/90). WCC Non-Conference Bullets The West Coast Conference posted a strong non-conference resume. The WCC was one of just five conferences nationally with every institution posting a winning record entering league play, joining the Big East, Big-12, Big-10 and Pac-12. Five WCC teams ranked in the top-50 nationally in scoring offense - BYU (4th/89.2), Gonzaga (16th/85.3), USF (35th/81.5), Portland (42nd/80.8) and LMU (50th/79.8). 5 AROUND THE WCC WCC Basketball Makes Postseason History With two teams already selected for the 2014 NCAA Tournament No. 8 Gonzaga and No. 10 BYU the West Coast Conference made history with two member institutions earning bids to the NIT Postseason Tournament. Saint Mary s College and the University of San Francisco each captured No. 4 seeds in the event and will host opening round games. Competing in the Minnesota Quadrant, Saint Mary s welcomes No. 5 Utah to Moraga Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. from McKeon Pavilion in a game televised on ESPN2. It is the third NIT berth for the Gaels, who advanced to the third round in San Francisco hosts No. 5 LSU Wednesday in a 7:00 p.m. contest on ESPNU at War Memorial Gym in the SMU Quadrant. The Dons are making their first appearance in the NIT Postseason since 2005 when they defeated Denver (69-67) in the opening round before falling to CSU Fullerton (85-69). WCC Basketball Sends Six Programs to the 2014 Postseason The combined four teams in the NCAA and NIT postseason fields matches the conference record set in 1989 when Loyola Marymount University and Saint Mary s earned NCAA bids and Pepperdine University and Santa Clara University qualified for the NIT field. The WCC sent three teams to the NCAA Tournament in 2012 (BYU, Gonzaga and Saint Mary s) and 2008 (Gonzaga, Saint Mary s and San Diego). In addition, two member institutions have accepted bids to the College Insiders Postseason Tournament (CIT), bringing the total WCC teams competing in the postseason to six. Pacific (15-15) and San Diego (16-16) both play this week. The Toreros host Portland State (17-14) Tuesday at the Jenny Craig Pavilion, while the Tigers play at Grand Canyon (15-14) on Wednesday. WCC Places Three on Capital One Academic All-America Team Three West Coast Conference men s basketball student-athletes were named to the Capital One Academic All-America men s basketball team as announced by CoSIDA - the most by any conference in the country. Malte Kramer (Pepperdine), Beau Levesque (Saint Mary s) and Thomas van der Mars (Portland) all earned third team honors. San Diego s Johnny Dee was joined the trio as an all-district 8 First Team selection. Introducing TheW.tv In mid-september the West Coast Conference formally launched TheW.tv, the home for WCC sports action on both linear television and in the digital space. Powered by Campus Insiders, TheW.tv delivers West Coast Conference live games, regular studio programming, and exclusive live coverage from every WCC championship free of charge, featuring the tagline, All the action. Anytime. Anywhere. During the basketball season, Campus Insiders will produce at least 15 games exclusively for the digital platform while also taking another 40+ West Coast Conference regional telecasts out of market exclusively in the digital space. West Coast Conference, ESPN Reach Eight-Year Extension The West Coast Conference and ESPN are in the third year of an eight-year contract extension that makes the ESPN networks the conference s men s basketball national television home through the school year. According to the agreement, the WCC will receive a minimum of 48 annual men s basketball appearances on the ESPN networks This year, more than 30 WCC games will be televised on the ESPN Networks. Time Warner Cable to Produce WCC Game of the Week, Weekly WCC TV Show The West Coast Conference and Time Warner Cable Sports have announced a long-term agreement to televise WCC men s basketball games and other sporting events throughout Southern California and the entire Time Warner Cable SportsNet footprint -- stretching from Las Vegas to Hawai i. Time Warner Cable Sports will produce a WCC Game of the Week and a weekly half-hour show devoted to WCC hoops each Saturday during conference play. COVERING WCC HOOPS All WCC Championship Games on TV BYUtv produced and televised a record 12 games from the 2014 WCC Basketball Championships at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. BYUtv broadcast the men s and women s first round on Thursday, March 6, the women s quarterfinals on Friday, March 7, a pair of men s quarterfinals on Saturday, March 8, and the women s semifinals on Monday, March 10. In addition, all 12 games produced by BYUtv were streamed live and archived on the WCC s new platform, TheW.tv. Live Media Stats During the season, all games will feature live stats via StatBroadcast. H Winners of 10 of its last 12, BYU posted a runner-up finish in the WCC Championship, falling to Gonzaga (75-64) in the finals. 8 Pepperdine Waves Team Notes H Pepperdine fell in the WCC Championship quarterfinals to Saint Mary s (80-69), finishing the season at H Pepperdine secured a spot in the top-six in the conference standings with its sixth road win of the year at LMU - the most for the Waves since H WCC Newcomer of the Year Stacy Davis ranked ninth in the WCC in scoring (15.1) and fifth in rebounds (7.6), while freshman guard Jeremy Major was fifth in assists (4.5). H Senior forward Brendan Lane rates 17th among WCC leaders in scoring (13.0), seventh in rebounding (7.3), and fifth in field goal percentage (54.7%). Lane was the league-leader in blocked shots (2.4). H Pepperdine s season is complete. Portland Team Notes Pilots H Portland fell in the opening round of the 2014 WCC Championship to Loyola Marymount (67-64). The Pilots went overall in H Junior guard Kevin Bailey led Portland in scoring (16.5), good for sixth among WCC points leaders, while senior forward Ryan Nicholas ranked third on the team in scoring (12.9) and led the Pilots and the WCC in rebounding (8.8). H Senior forward Cole Dickerson leads the Dons in scoring (14.8) and rebounds (7.7). The All-WCC performer rates fourth among league rebounding leaders and is 12th in scoring. H Freshman guard Jared Brownridge captured top newcomer honors, averaging 18.4 points per game during league play.
