The Hawks have cut down Norfolk State, Villanova, Wagner and Mount St. Mary s in their last four games, while the Blackbirds bounced back from a Saturday loss at Sacred Heart to defeat Quinnipiac Monday. LAST TIME OUT Abby Martin compiled her second double-double of the season with 22 points and a season-high 14 rebounds as the Hawks defeated Mount St. Mary s, 59-52, Monday night at the MAC. Alysha Womack added a season-high 17 points and Betsy Gadziala contributed nine points and a career-high 10 rebounds. Led by Womack and Gadziala, the MU bench scored a season-high 29 points. SCOUTING THE LIU BROOKLYN BLACKBIRDS The Blackbirds (13-3, 2-2 NEC) are led by Ashley Palmer, who s averaged a league-high 20.2 points per game to go along with 8.1 rebounds per game. Ebony Davis has also contributed 9.7 points and 7.6 rebounds per game, while Kiara Evans has chipped in 8.3 points, 5.3 assists and 1.6 steals per game. Led by Krystal Wells 44.9 percent shooting from beyond the arc, the Blackbirds lead the NEC in three-point shooting at 35.1 percent. LIU Brooklyn also leads the league in rebounding defense (33.7 rpg.) and rebounding margin (+6.2), and is second in scoring defense (57.4 ppg.), scoring margin (+7.0), field-goal percentage (.423) and three-point field-goal percentage defense (.270). Martin has shot 55.4 percent (41-74) during the span. She was named to the Hawk Holiday Classic All- Tournament Team after averaging 10.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per game against Norfolk State and Villanova. Martin scored the last six points against Villanova as the Hawks held on for the title. She also poured in 22 points and 14 rebounds against Mount St. Mary s. Monster performance Abby Martin compiled her second double-double fo the season with 22 points and 14 rebounds against Mount St. Mary s on Jan. 9. The juinor forward made 9-of- 18 attempts from the floor and 4-of-5 from the charity stripe. Martin pulled down eight defensive rebounds and battled for six offensive caroms. WHOA-MACK Alysha Womack is blossoming in her return from injury, as evidenced by her 17-point performance against Mount St. Mary s on Jan. 9. In her fourth game since returning from a knee injury, Womack connected on 5-of-9 shooting from the floor and 7-of-8 from the free-throw line. MISSED IT BY THAT MUCH Betsy Gadziala narrowly missed her first-career double-double with nine points and a career-high 10 rebounds, Jan. 9 against Mount St. Mary s. The junior forward efficiently knocked down 4-of-7 attempts from the floor and made 1-of-2 free throws. She also dished out three assists in the victory. BENEFICIAL BENCH Led by Alysha Womack s 17 points and nine more from Betsy Gadziala, the Monmouth bench scored a season-high 29 points against Mount St. Mary s on Jan. 9. GETTING DEFENSIVE The Hawks held opponents to just 51.0 points per game in a recent four-game winning streak over Norfolk State, Villanova, Wagner and Mount St. Mary s. In the last three wins, Villanova, Wagner and Mount St. Mary s averaged 48.3 points per game while shooting just 30.3 percent (53-175) from the floor. MR. BELDING APPROVED Alexis A.C. Canady has been a catalyst in the Hawks seven victories this season. The senior point guard has contributed 10.9 points, 6.4 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game in the Hawks wins against Lehigh, Lafayette, Saint Peter s, Norfolk State, Villanova, Wagner and Mount St. Mary s. THUNDER FROM DOWN UNDER Chevannah Paalvast scored in double figures in three straight games against Norfolk State, Villanova and Wagner - all Monmouth victories - after establishing a previous season high of eight points. Paalvast averaged a team-high 13.0 points per game during the Hawk Holiday Classic. She doubled her previous season high with 16 points, also eclipsing her previous career high of 11 points, in a victory over Norfolk State on Dec. 29. She then connected for 10 points, including several clutch shots against Villanova on Dec. 30. She also blocked three shots on the twoday tournament. The New Zealand native then scored 10 points against Wagner on Jan. 7. Paalvast s previous season high of eight points came at East Carolina, while her previous career high of 11 points came last season against Quinnipiac. Balanced Attack Six Hawks scored at least eight points in Monmouth s victory over Wagner on Jan. 7. Alexis Canady led the way with 15 points, while Chevannah Paalvast added 10 points. Betsy Gadziala, Alysha Womack and Shira Shecht contributed nine points apiece, while Gena Broadus had eight points. CARLY three-bault Carly Thibault has made a team-best 36.1 percent (26-72) from long range this season, including 5-of-7 in the season opener against UMBC on Nov. 13.

3 GAD-WOW-A In nine games started this season, Betsy Gadziala has rewarded Coach Jenny Palmateer for her confidence. Gadziala averaged 9.3 points, 5.8 rebounds and 1.1 steals while shooting 46.3 percent (37-80) in 27.4 minutes per game. Gadziala scored 11 points and added six rebounds in 30 minutes to help the Hawks to a victory over Lehigh on Nov. 25, before adding a career-high 14 points and six rebounds on 7-of-11 shooting against Lafayette on Nov. 27. Gadziala matched her career-highs of 14 points and six rebounds on 6-of-11 shooting at Robert Morris on Dec. 3, before setting a new career best with eight rebounds against Winthrop. On Dec. 17, Gadziala scored a career-high 16 points at Manhattan. BIG WIN VS. BIG EAST The Hawks earned their first win against a Big East team since 1987 when they defeated Villanova on Dec. 30. With the victory against the Wildcats in the Hawk Holiday Classic Championship, Monmouth defeated a Big East team for the first time since taking down Georgetown on Dec. 1, The Hawks are now 6-40 since the season against current Big East teams, including two wins each against Villanova and Seton Hall, as well as one each against Georgetown and Connecticut. The Hawks held the Wildcats to a season-low 28.6 percent (16-56) from the floor. The Preseason All-NEC Team honoree has averaged 12.4 points per game in her career, en route to more than 800 points. double-double duo Abby Martin and Alexis Canady each compiled double-doubles in the Hawks victory over Saint Peter s on Dec. 10. Martin had 21 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks, while Canady added 17 points, 12 rebounds and six assists. The doubledoubles were the first of the season for the Hawks. The Hawks outrebounded the Peahens by 14 boards, a season-best rebounding margin. BROADUS ON THE BOARDS Gena Broadus grabbed a season-high nine rebounds three times in a recent fourgame span. She started the stretch at East Carolina, and matched the total two games later at Saint Francis (Pa.). Once again, Broadus grabbed nine boards against Saint Peter s. Broadus career high is 12, established Nov. 21, 2010, at Marquette. MY FAVORITE MARTIN Abby Martin scored a season-high 23 points, including the game-winning putback with 25 seconds left in regulation, in the Hawks first win of the season, Nov. 25 against Lehigh. Martin also added eight rebounds. a.c. s homecoming Playing 10 miles from her Forestville, Md. hometown, Alexis Canady had a gamehigh 14 points and five assists, Nov. 21 at Georgetown. A two-time All-NEC Second Team selection, Womack was named the 2010 NEC Rookie of the Year. She averaged a team-high 12.5 points per game (8th- NEC) and made 1.64 three-point field goals per game, good for ninth in the NEC. Look who s back The Hawks return 10 of their top 11 scorers from a year ago, in addition to a difference-maker in the middle who sat out the year. Alysha Womack returns as the team s top scorer from , while third-leading scorer (9.7 ppg.) and leading rebounder (7.0) Abby Martin also returns to the fold. Alexis Canady returns to run the point in her senior season after contributing 8.6 points, 5.5 rebounds and nearly three assists per game. Rugged forward Gena Broadus also returns, giving the Hawks another interior option, having chipped in 4.6 points and 5.7 rebounds per game in With the likes of Adriana Allen, Betsy Gadziala, Chanel Gomez, Chevannah Paalvast, Shira Shecht, Gabby Singer and Carly Thibault also returning, the Hawks have a strong foundation with which to build upon in Ballin Outta Control Abby Martin was named to the 2011 Northeast Conference Tournament All- Tournament Team after averaging 19.7 points and 8.7 rebounds per game during MU s run to the final. She shot 57.8% from the field, adding six blocks and four steals in the tournament. In the Hawks quarterfinal win over Quinnipiac, Martin registered her fifth double-double of the year with a career-high 25 points and 11 rebounds. Against Robert Morris in the semifinals, she netted 15 points, grabbed seven boards and set another career high with three blocks. DOING THE JOB WITH DEFENSE The Monmouth women s basketball team ranked first in the Northeast Conference, and 31st in the NCAA, in scoring defense last season, allowing 55.7 points per game, and only 52.1 points per contest in league games. In conference play, the Hawks limited their opponents to 24.2% shooting from three-point range, and forced an average of 18.5 turnovers per NEC contest. IF YOU RE NOT FIRST, YOU RE LAST. In the Monmouth women s basketball team s 21 regular season wins in , the Hawks outscored their opponents by almost 13 points per game. MU shot 34.6% from three-point range in its wins, hitting 140-of-405 from beyond the arc, while limiting the opposition to 59-of-246 from distance (24.0%). In those wins, the Blue and White got off to fast starts, outscoring its opponents, (33.0 ppg-24.6 ppg on average) in the first half.

5 WE RE GOING STREAKING THROUGH THE QUAD and to the gymnasium. After defeating Robert Morris last season, Monmouth ran its winning streak to eight consecutive games, its longest winning streak since That year, from January 8 to February 10, MU won 10 straight contests, which is tied for the longest winning streak in program history. In the season, the Hawks had winning streaks of 10 games in a row twice, and finished perfect in Northeast Conference play at Monmouth s 8-2 mark through the season s first 10 games last year was the best start in school history. NO SOUP FOR YOU! Monmouth holds the NEC record for blocks in a single game (15), a record that was set against Fairleigh Dickinson on January 9, return of the womack The Northeast Conference Rookie of the Year Alysha Womack led the MU squad in scoring in , and finished last season ranked 12th in the NEC, averaging 12.6 points per game. She scored in double figures in 21 of 30 contests in , including careerhighs of 25 against Saint Francis University (01/21/10) and CCSU (01/07/10). She also earned Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week honors five times as a freshman, including three in a row to end the regular season, and was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Hampton Inn Invitational hosted by UNC Wilmington. Womack was the first freshman to lead the team in scoring since , when Amanda Rosato averaged 15.4 points per game. She was also named to the All-NEC Second Team and the all-rookie squad in BOARDWALK EMPIRE Junior guard Alexis Canady (whose nickname is AC, see what I did there?) was named the Most Valuable Player of the first annual Hawk Holiday Classic in 2009, helping lead MU to the tournament title. In Monmouth s first game against Howard (12/29/09) at the tournament, she tied her career-high with 16 points on a career-best five three-pointers and added a career-high four assists. In the title game win over La Salle (12/30/09), she scored seven points while supplying stingy defense and solid leadership in helping the Hawks overcome a 19-point deficit late in the first half. NEC MARK Monmouth University won its 200th Northeast Conference game on February 21, 2005, when the Hawks defeated Wagner, MU has won double-digit NEC games 10 years in a row, with their most league wins coming in back-to-back unbeaten seasons in league play (16-0) in and under coach Mickey McGlade.
