The Hawks defense effectively shut down Lehigh s offense in the second half and overtime on Nov. 25, holding the Mountain Hawks without a field goal for a span of over 15 minutes and to just one field goal in a span covering more than 19 minutes. The lone Lehigh field goal in the span was a desperation heave from beyond NBA three-point range that appeared to be released after the shot clock had expired. PAALVAST PIVOTAL IN OVERTIME Chevannah Paalvast scored a game-high 15 points, including six in two overtime periods, in the Hawks double-overtime victory over Lehigh on Nov. 25. HOW TO REACH US: ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS COMMUNICATIONS: greg ott Phone: Fax: gott@monmouth.edu Cell Phone: D.D. IN DOUBLE DIGITS Redshirt-freshman forward Danica Dragicevic scored a career-high 10 points, all in a second-half comeback, on 5-of-7 shooting Nov. 25 at Lehigh. For her effort, Dragicevic was named NEC Rookie of the Week on Nov. 26. Her previous career high of seven points came earlier this season at Gonzaga, while her season high in seven games played last season was just two points at Wake Forest. there when you need her Alysha Womack had easily her toughest game of the season at Lehigh, seeing her season-opening four-game streak of 20-point games snapped with an eight-point effort. But Womack was still instrumental in the win, scoring on a free throw and three-pointer to open the second overtime. The Hawks never trailed again after the mini scoring surge. WHOA-MACK Alysha Womack scored more than 20 points in each of the Hawks first four games this season and in six of a span of seven games for Monmouth, dating back to last season. Of her 17 career games scoring 20 points or more, she had never strung together three straight prior to the most-recent streak. NO NEED FOR GREED Alysha Womack has done her fair share of scoring this season, but proved she could also distribute the ball with a career-high eight assists against Lafayette. She also hung 20 points on the Leopards on an efficient 8-for-14 shooting. FLYING TO THE BOARDS The Hawks grabbed a then-season-high 51 rebounds, Nov. 16, at Washington State. Abigail Martin and Sara English led seven Hawks with at least four rebounds each with eight boards apiece. Betsy Gadziala, Alysha Womack and Gabby Singer also added six rebounds apiece, while Carly Thibault (5) and Chevannah Paalvast (4) also made strong contributions. A LITTLE DEFENSIVE, ARE YOU? The Hawks held Lafayette without a field goal for nearly 11 minutes to start the game on Nov. 23. Monmouth held the Leopards to just 23.6 percent (13-55) shooting on the day, including just 14.3 percent (4-28) in the first half. Betsy Gadziala was the unsung hero on the day, holding 6-foot-7 Lafayette center Danielle Fiacco to just six points on 3-of-10 shooting and without an offensive rebound. Meanwhile, Gadziala grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and five different Hawks had two steals each. GO WEST, YOUNG LADIES The Hawks visit to Washington State and Gonzaga marked the first games the program had played in the Pacific Time Zone since taking part in the St. Mary s/ Delta Faucet Classic in Moraga, Calif., in November CAREER DAY Chevannah Paalvast and Betsy Gadziala enjoyed career days in spite of the Hawks setback to UMBC on Nov. 11. Paalvast posted a then-career-high 19 points, including 14 in the second half. Gadziala drew the starting assignment and set new career highs in rebounds (13) and assists (4), while tying her then-career high in steals (3).

5 PRESEASON PROGNOSTICATION The NEC s coaches picked the Hawks to finish third (one first-place vote) this season, behind Quinnipiac (seven first-place votes) and Sacred Heart (four first-place votes). Alysha Womack was selected to the Preseason All-NEC Team after three-straight All-NEC Second Team selections the last three seasons. LIKE A ROCK Chevannah Paalvast produced perhaps the best all-around performance of her then two-year career with 14 points, four rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocks in 30 minutes against Quinnipiac in the The sophomore wing posted the stat line while taking the defensive assignment of All-NEC First Team guard Felicia Barron. Paalvast held Barron to seven points on 2-for-14 shooting. THAT DON T IMPRESS MU MUCH The Hawks defeated LIU Brooklyn, which won 21 games, three times in , becoming the only team to beat the Blackbirds more than once last year. Monmouth took a victory in Brooklyn on Jan. 14, before winning twice at home within a week, on Feb. 25 and on March 3. DEJA VU ALL OVER AGAIN...AND AGAIN Alysha Womack was named to the All-NEC Second Team for the third-consecutive season in Womack averaged 15.9 points per game in 21 games played after returning from a knee injury that claimed the season s first 11 games. In 16 conference games played, Womack averaged 16.4 points per game, good for seventh in the league. The Hawks went on an eight-game winning streak, including their first win over a Big East program in Villanova since , upon Womack s return to the line-up. Monmouth posted a 16-5 record with Womack in the line-up after going 3-8 without her. WOMACK ONE THOUSAND With 16 points at Wagner on Feb. 18, Alysha Womack became the 15th player in Monmouth Division I history to eclipse 1,000 points. Womack also became just the fifth player in program D-I history to reach 1,000 points prior to their senior season, joining Michelle Cappadona, Amanda Rosato, Michelle Allen and Linda Wilson. CARLY three-bault Carly Thibault made a team-best 40.0 percent (48-120) from long range last season, including 5-of-7 in the season opener against UMBC on Nov. 13 and a perfect 4-for-4 on Jan. 14. The junior guard opened the season shooting 49.0 percent (24-49) from long range through eight games, but suffered through a 2-for-23 (.087) stretch in the following seven games. Her 53.8 percent (21-39) performance in the next 12 games pushed her season percentage to 42.9 percent (47-111), before a 1-for-9 effort over the last five games caused a dip to 40.0 percent, still a team best. WHEN SHE S HOT, SHE DOESN T MISS Carly Thibault was the last of Monmouth s 10 players to score against FDU last Feb. 15, but she finished with a team-high 11 points. Thibault went 0-for-3, all from long range, in the first half, before making all of her three attempts in the second half, also all from three-point land, while adding a pair of free throws. All told, the junior sharpshooter did not miss in the second stanza. GOOD-ZIALA Betsy Gadziala hit 7-of-13 attempts from the floor and 4-of-6 from the free-throw line for a career-high 18 points, last Feb. 11 against Fairleigh Dickinson. Coincidentally, the junior forward had made 7-of-13 attempts in her previous career-high, early in the season at Manhattan. The difference was an additional two made free throws against the Knights. Big shot womack Alysha Womack hit a pair of big shots in the final minute of the Hawks road win at Central Connecticut on Jan. 30, Womack knocked down a jumper with her toe on the three-point arc with 31 seconds remaining to tie the game at 56-56, before calmly draining the game-winning three-pointer with 1.2 seconds remaining. WE RE GOING STREAKING THROUGH THE QUAD and to the gymnasium With wins over Robert Morris and Saint Francis (Pa.), the Hawks ran their winning streak to eight games, tying the squad for the longest winning streak the program has seen since the season. The streak was snapped Jan. 28 at Bryant. In 93-94, from January 8 to February 10, MU won 10 straight contests. In the season, the Hawks had winning streaks of 10 games in a row twice, and finished perfect in Northeast Conference play at The second streak ran to 11 games with a win to open the season. The longest winning streak in program history came in , when the Hawks ran off 13 straight victories. GETTING DEFENSIVE The Hawks held opponents to just 52.0 points per game in their eight-game winning streak. In a stretch of five wins against Villanova, Wagner, Mount St. Mary s and LIU Brooklyn, opponents averaged 48.6 points per game while shooting just 33.1 percent (88-266) from the floor.
