The top two teams -- Tennessee and Connecticut -- have larger home seating capacities than OU s arena. Oklahoma was No. 4 in national attendance last season and No. 2 in the Big 12 Conference with an average of 10,437 in the seats for OU s 12 home games. Amazing Attendance The Sooners have built one of the largest fan followings in the nation. The number breaks the record of 6,465 season tickets bought last season. Though reserved level season tickets have sold out, general admission season tickets remain and fans are encouraged to purchase them prior to the start of the season. GA season tickets are available for $115. Group and single game tickets became available Monday, Nov. 19. Single game tickets for home games are $8 for adults and $5 for youths (K-12). The Sooner fan base is one of the nation s fastest growing. The Oklahoma women s basketball team ranked No. 4 in attendance last season, averaging 10,437 fans. That was an increase of 37 percent from the season when Lloyd Noble Center games averaged 7,630, which was an increase of 35 percent over the previous season. To date, the Sooners are two games shy of 1,000 in program history. Should OU make it to the NCAA Women s Basketball Championship Regional Semifinal, that will mark the program s 1,000th.OU s all-time record is (.579). Coale s 250th Victory Sherri Coale earned her 250th victory in her 12th year as the head coach of the Oklahoma Sooners. The Sooners defeated Texas A&M, 68-56, on Tuesday, Feb. 12, for the milestone win. Coale s is OU s all-time leader in coaching victories and winning percentage. Paris Passes 2,000 With her sixth point against Oklahoma State, Sunday, Feb. 23, Courtney Paris reached 2,000 career points quicker than any player in Big 12 or Oklahoma history. Paris was playing her 94th game. Paris finished the game with 18 points to boost her career total to 2,012. Pairs 32nd Big 12 Record If passing 2,000 career points faster than any other player in Big 12 history wasn t enough, Courtney Paris literally grabbed her second Big 12 record in the game against Oklahoma State (Feb. 23). Paris grabbed a career high 11 offensive boards to overtake Baylor s Sophia Young (489, ) as the Big 12 career offensive rebounds leader. Third Consecutive 20-Win Season Oklahoma captured its third consecutive 20-win season and 13th in the program s history with is victory against Oklahoma State on Feb. 23. Kay Yow Cancer Fund Auction Oklahoma fans raised $8,041 for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund through an online auction on SoonerSports.com. Bids were made on several items used in the Sooners Pack the Place Pink Night against Georgia to promote the WBCA s Think Pink Week. 12 Pink Warm-up T-shirts raised $2,591, or $216 per shirt. To do so, OU must win against No. 5 seed Notre Dame Tuesday, March 25. Notre Dame s lineup features four guards -- Charel Allen, Ashley Barlow, Tulyah Gaines and Lindsay Schrader -- and one 6-4 center, Erica Williamson, who look to stop the Sooners. Notre Dame has the nation s eighth-best scoring offense and 14th best assist-toturnover ratio. Allen is the team s leading scorer, averaging 14.4 points, and is just one of two players who have started all 32 games for the Irish. Notre Dame head coach Muffet McGraw is in her 21st season as the Fighting Irish head coach and in her 26th season as an NCAA Division I head coach. Her overall record is (.711) and (.717) at Notre Dame. McGraw has guided Notre Dame to 15 NCAA Tournament appearances that include six Sweet 16s, two Final Fours and the 2001 National Championship. ALL-TIME IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT Oklahoma is all-time in the NCAA Tournament with a 8-2 record in the first round. The Sooners have a 6-1 record in the second round. 4 PARIS Making HER Case for Player of the Year Courtney Paris, the 2008 Big 12 Player of the Year, is the only player to in more than three of the eight major statistical categories in which the NCAA ranks individual players (points, rebounds, assists, blocks, steals, field goal percentage, 3-point field goal percentage and free throw percentage). Paris, who is ranked in four categories, is the nation s leading rebounder, No. 4 in blocks per game, No. 23 in field goal percentage and No. 23 in points per game. The Circus COMES TO West Lafayette When Connecticut visited Norman, Okla., to play the Sooners during the season, a then-record crowd of 10,713 attended the game at the Lloyd Noble Center. OU head coach Sherri Coale likened the experience to the circus coming to town. It seems that Oklahoma now has its own three rings. A visit by the Sooners in boosts its opponent s attendance by 42 percent over its season average. This is up from 41 percent during the season. Road Game Vs. Season High *Largest non-conference draw **Oklahoma state record for women s basketball Coale Most Fun to Watch OU head coach Sherri Coale was recently voted by members of the Women s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) as the Most Fun to Watch head coach in the nation. PINKOUT SETS ATTENDANCE RECORD Oklahoma s Pack the Place Pink Night, a win over Texas A&M on Feb. 12, set a Lloyd Noble Center women s basketball attendance record of 12,168. That figure bested the 12,112 that turned out for OU s inaugural Cheer Like A Champion game, formerly the WhiteOUt, against Baylor in Bedlam Sets Attendance Record The Bedlam rematch between Oklahoma and Oklahoma State on Feb. 23 set a Lloyd Noble Center women s basketball attendance record of 12,205. The game, which sold out 30 days in advance, was the second consecutive game in Norman to set an attendance record. ThREE CONSECUTIVE HOME SELLOUTS With the 12,202 in attendance for OU s home finale against Texas on March 2, the final three Sooner women s basketball home games sold out -- a program record for consecutive sellouts at the Lloyd Noble Center. ASHLEY PARIS NAMED ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT Ashley Paris, a journalism major, was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 6 First Team this week. To qualify, canididates must have a 3.20 cumulative GPA or better and at least one year of academic residency. Robinson on Pace for 400 OU freshman guard Danielle Robinson is on pace to pass the 400-point scoring benchmark. Through 30 games, the Sooners point guard has scored 372 points. Only four Sooners have achieved the feat in their freshman season. They include the program s No. 2, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 9 all-time scorers. Should Robinson reach 400, she will be just the second guard in OU history (LaNeisha Caufield) to do so her freshman season. Player Year Total Avg. After recording 132 consecutive games making at least one 3-pointer, Oklahoma shot 0-for-4 from beyond the arc in its third game of the season, a win against Arizona State. This season, the Sooners have posted 18 games at.300 or below in 3-point field goal shooting, including two 0-fors and a dismal 1-for-15 game against Baylor on Feb. 17. The Sooners are shooting 27.2 percent from 3-point range in , the team s worst rate in its history. Paris is Wonderful in February In eight February games the duo of Ashley and Courtney Paris averaged 35.3 points and 24.1 rebounds. Ashley Paris contributed 12.8 points and 9.3 rebounds per game. She shot 54.9 percent from the field and had three of her 10 career double-doubles in the month. Courtney Paris averaged 22.5 points and 14.8 rebounds while shooting 61.5 percent. TOUGH FINISH Oklahoma opened the season with the toughest schedule in the nation as its first three games -- Maryland, Tennessee and Arizona State -- featured Top 25 ranked opponents. Starting with Texas A&M, the seven-game end to the Sooners regular season features five opponents ranked in the Top 20 of both the media and coaches polls. 5 Paris A Naismith FINALIST For the third straight season, Courtney Paris was named one of the four finalists for the Women s Naismith Trophy, given by the Atlanta Tip-Off Club to recognize the women s college basketball national player of the year. Paris joins LSU s Sylvia Fowles, Tennessee s Candace Parker and Stanford s Candice Wiggins as finalists. Fans will determine 25 percent of the award s selection through text message voting. Points in the Paris Coined by Nancy Lieberman after witnessing OU s dominating inside game against Georgia, Oklahoma opponents can forget about outscoring the Sooners in the paint thanks to the Paris twins. OU outscores opponents in the paint by an average of 41 to 22. Courtney supplies 15 per game (37 percent) in the paint while Ashley contributes seven points (18 percent) in the paint per game. Together the sisters average 22 points in the paint -- as much as the entire opposing roster and half of OU s total. Paris has had an equally remarkable season defending the post as she had held her opposing matchup to an average of 7.7 points, 5.7 rebounds and 35 percent field goal shooting. Of those opposing players, only six have reached their respective season scoring averages and just four their rebounding average against Paris. Against Paris and the Sooners, Maryland s Crystal Langhorne, Tennessee s Nicky Anosike and Georgia s Tasha Humphrey made just 5-of-29 (17 percent) field goal attempts. Double-Double Superlatives Talk about Courtney Paris double-double success gets stale, especially when she has had just three games in her career without one, the last being over 800 days ago. Consider this: Double Double-Double Paris has played nine career games in which she has reached 20 points and 20 rebounds. Double-Double Animal Style Paris has 27 career games in which she has reached a double-double and recorded five or more blocks. The last was against Missouri (March 11) when she recorded 30 points, 20 rebounds and seven blocks. Burning Lots of Rubber With the speed and quickness Danielle Robinson flaunts, one can expect the Oklahoma freshman wears out shoes on a regular basis. Oklahoma s Midcourt Taking SHAPE If dealing with Paris twins, D-Rob and J-Plum weren t enough, the January successes of forward Nyeshia Stevenson and Amanda Thompson and increased playing time of Carlee Roethlisberger have given OU s opponents three extra triple-threats on which to focus. Thompson scored 13.1 points per game in seven January contests, up from 6.5 in her previous 21 starts. She also increased her defense as her blocks and steals per game to start the new year were nearly double that of her past one-and-a-half seasons. Stevenson played a career high 32 minutes against Kansas and led the Sooners in scoring for the first time in her career with 15 points. She also had a game-high five assists. Courtney has started all but one, after requesting to sit on senior night as a freshman, and has scored in double figures in all of them. RECAPPING THE NCAA FIRST ROUND Courtney Paris was heavily guarded, so Oklahoma depended on her twin sister and the rest of her teammates to advance to the second round of the NCAA tournament. Ashley Paris scored 13 points, Courtney Paris managed 12 points and 12 rebounds and the Sooners beat 13th-seeded Illinois State on Sunday in the first round of the Oklahoma City regional. With the Redbirds sometimes assigning three players to guard Oklahoma s leading scorer, Courtney Paris teammates picked up the slack. Danielle Robinson and Rose Hammond both scored 12 points, and Amanda Thompson had nine points, eight rebounds, five assists, four blocks and three steals for fourth-seeded Oklahoma (22-8). After unsuccessfully trying to get Courtney Paris involved early, Coale decided to use the 6-foot-4 power forward as a decoy by pulling her away from the basket to create driving lanes. Courtney Paris only took five shots. The Sooners hung on after watching a 17-point second-half lead get whittled to three points in the final minutes. A three-point play by Illinois State s Tiffany Hudson made it with 2:43 to go, and Hudson made the second of two free throws to make it with just over two minutes left. However, while these freshmen are very talented and will make their names known quickly, they do draw comparisons to some familiar faces. Danielle Robinson 5-9 G San Jose, Calif. Robinson was the Sooners surprise pickup of the 2007 recruiting class. After acknowledging OU was off her radar until her official visit, Robinson made the decision to be a Sooner before she checked her bags for the return flight home. The speedy guard will see time both on and off the point and draws comparisons to Dionnah Jackson. Carlee Roethlisberger 6-1 F Findlay, Ohio Having the third most recognizable surname speaks to the star power on the Sooners roster. Yes, Carlee is the sister of Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben, but she may the family s best athlete. Roethlisberger is leanest Sooner and the one with the greatest ceiling in terms of untapped basketball potential. Her play resembles another lean forward in former Sooner Leah Rush. Jenny Vining 5-9 G Marshall, Ark. This Arkansas high school star will remind fans of former Sooner Erin Higgins because of her 3-point range and accuracy, although Vining s may prove to be better in both cases. Head coach Sherri Coale says that Vining might be the best freshman she has ever coached because of her ability to quickly learn from mistakes and make correct adjustments in practice. Lauren Willis 5-11 G Overland Park, Kan. Willis was an all-stater in Kansas and walkedon to the OU program. She has been a stellar defender in practice as was quite the spark in OU s preseason intrasquad scrimmage as she went 3- for-3 from beyond the arc in limited action. Willis is the daughter of Steve Willis, a placekicker on Kansas State football s first ever bowl team, and the former Lois Groen, an All-American and Big Eight Conference track and field champion at Iowa State. C. Paris Big 12 Preseason POY For the second straight season, Oklahoma s Courtney Paris was named the Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year in the coaches vote. The 6-4 center, who averaged 23.5 points and 15.9 rebounds, was last season s Big 12 Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year after leading the Sooners to title defenses of the conference s regular season and tournament championships. Wooden Award committee Wednesday, Oct. 31. Paris, a two-time Wooden All-American, was also a preseason nominee last year and was one of 16 finalists for the 2007 Women s Wooden Award. Tennessee s Candace Parker was the 2007 recipient of the honor. The award is named for the three-time college basketball All-American, 1932 National Player of the Year and 10-time national championship coach John Wooden. Created in 1976, the John R. Wooden Award is the most prestigious individual honor in college basketball. It is bestowed upon the nation s best player at an institution of higher education who has proven to his or her university that he or she is making progress toward graduation and maintaining a cumulative 2.0 GPA. Previous winners include such notables as Larry Bird (1979), Michael Jordan (1984), Tim Duncan (1997), and last year s recipients, Kevin Durant of Texas and Candace Parker of Tennessee. Paris and Team USA Qualify for Olympics Courtney Paris missed 30 days of the Sooners preseason training...and head coach Sherri Coale probably couldn t have been more pleased with the result. Courtney Paris, one of two collegians playing for the USA Basketball Women s Senior National Team, swept through the FIBA Americas Zone Tournament in Valdivia, Chile, winning the gold medal against Cuba on Sept. 30 and, more importantly, clinching a berth for the United States in next year s Olympic Games. Paris was a role-player for the U.S., as one of very few post players her size in international basketball. She averaged nine minutes per game as the Americans went through the tournament undefeated at 5-0. It was Paris seventh gold medal as part of a USA Basketball team. Paris and U21 Team win World Championship Paris earned twice as much gold this summer as she helped the USA Basketball Women s Under 21 Team to a World Championship title in July. The U.S. defeated Australia, 96-73, in the title game in Moscow, Russia, to give Paris and Team USA its fourth straight gold in age-group basketball. Paris played 39 games with USA Basketball in age group contests and never lost. She averaged 10.9 points and 8.0 rebounds in eight contests during the World Championships. Red Bests White in Intrasquad Scrimmage The University of Oklahoma women s basketball team completed its intrasquad scrimmage Thursday night at the Lloyd Noble Center in front of 2,200 fans. Players split time between Red and White teams as they played four eight-minute quarters. The Red defeated White in three quarters and won the overall battle with a total score of Each period was intense and down to the wire as the largest margin of victory in any quarter was four points. White got the best of Red in the first, 21-17, but Red bounced back with victories in the final three quarters (25-22 in the second, in the third and in the fourth.) Courtney Paris led the Sooners with 27 total points. She shot 9-of-16 (.563) from the field and added nine points at the free throw line. Paris missed a double-double by one rebound, but made contributions elsewhere with four assists and a steal in 27 minutes on the court. Nyeshia Stevenson scored 26 points and added three steals and two assists to her stat line as she took full advantage of her athletic ability in several fast breaks and one-on-one situations. OU s four freshman played with no fear as guards Danielle Robinson and Jenny Vining scored 14 points apiece, Lauren Willis shot 3-of-3 from beyond the arc for nine points and forward Carlee Roethlisberger totaled seven points and seven rebounds. Also scoring in double figures were Rose Hammond (15), Jenna Plumley (11) and Abi Olajuwon (11). Plumley, who played 31 of a possible 32 minutes, was effective running the point, shooting 3-of-9 from 3-point range and counting nine assists with just three turnovers.
