2 WBCA s Think Pink A Lloyd Noble Center women s basketball record crowd of 12,168 attended OU s second annual Pack the Place Pink Night to watch Oklahoma rally to defeat Texas A&M The inaugural Pack the Place Pink Night started in 2007 in conjunction with the Women s Basketball Coaches Association s (WBCA) Think Pink program. The initative is a global, unified effort for the WBCA nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. In 2007, more than 120 schools unified for this effort and helped make the inaugural year of Think Pink a success. The 2008 initiative has already unified over 600 women s basketball teams for the cause. We know that with early detection, we stand the best chance of beating breast cancer which still claims approximately 41,000 lives each year, said Elizabeth Jett, M.D., director of imaging for the OU Breast Institute. Yet, there are still alarming numbers of women over the age of 40 who do not get regular mammograms. We hope events like the OU Think Pink game will help spread the word about the importance of screening and early detection. At last year s Pack the Place Pink Night, 11,245 members of the Sooner Nation cheered OU to a 20-point victory over archrival Texas on a nationally television game on ESPN2. Over $8,000 was raised for breast cancer research by the Sooner Nation. Breast Cancer Facts and Figures Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death for all women and the leading overall cause of cancer death in women between the ages of 20 and 59 In the United States, breast cancer is expected to be newly diagnosed every three minutes, and a woman will die from breast cancer every 13 minutes African American women have a higher breast cancer death rate than women of any other racial or ethnic population Eighty percent of all breast tumors are benign In 2007, it was estimated that there would be 178,480 new cases of breast cancer in women and 2,030 new cases of breast cancer in men. Of these, an estimated 40,460 women and 450 men will die from the disease The basic treatment choices for breast cancer are surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and hormonal therapy The most common risk factors of breast cancer are sex, age, personal history, family history and breast cancer genes The highest risk factor for breast cancer is being female with the disease being 100 times more common among women The risk of breast cancer increases as a woman grows older Women who have had breast cancer and women with a history of breast disease may develop it again The risk of developing breast cancer increases for a woman whose mother, sister, daughter or two or more relatives have had the disease Women appear to have an increased risk of breast cancer while they are on Hormone Replacement Therapy which continues for a short time thereafter There are several lifestyle choices that individuals can make to help reduce breast cancer risk including decreasing daily fat intake (especially saturated and hydrogenated), increasing fiber, eating fresh fruits and vegetables, limiting alcohol, staying active and not smoking The best available method to detect breast cancer early is a mammography screening Breast cancer is the most invasive cancer among women in the U.S. accounting for nearly one out of every three cancers diagnosed An estimated 178,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer were expected to occur in 2007 *Sources: AstraZeneca - getbcfacts.com; American Cancer Society - cancer.org Kay Yow Cancer Fund Auction The University of Oklahoma women s basketball team, in partnership with CSTV, is auctioning several game-used items in order to promote breast cancer awareness. As part of the Women s Basketball Coaches Association s (WBCA) Think Pink, the Sooners have made available 17 authentic items that were used by players and coaches during OU s Pack the Place Pink Night against Texas A&M Tuesday, Feb. 12. All proceeds generated by the auction will be donated to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund. Coale Challenges OU Students Coach Coale is presenting a challenge to University of Oklahoma students. University of Oklahoma women s basketball coach Sherri Coale has pledged to donate one dollar to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund for every student in attendance at Oklahoma s final three home games at the Lloyd Noble Center. Coale will also match the final figure with an equal donation to OU s Campus Activities Council to disperse among the university s registered student organizations. Coale has set a minimum donation of $2,000 for each fund. Statewide Participation The University of Oklahoma women s basketball team would like to extend its apppreciation to the following local schools that are also participating in Think Pink week by promoting breast cancer awareness during a game the week of Feb Comanche, Drummond, Fox, Grove, Hillsdale College, Kingfisher, Miami, Okarche, Piedmont, Plainview, Pryor, Sallisaw, Sequoyah, Shawnee, Sperry, Spiro, Stonewall, Sulphur, Tulsa Union, Vinita, Wetumka, Wynona. The items include: The official game ball, specially designed by Nike for this game embossed with a pink ribbon emblem, to be autographed by the entire team and Coach Coale. Sherri Coale-autographed pink Jimmy Choo high heels worn by the head coach during the game. Three pairs of pink Nike tennis shoes worn by the assistant coaches to be autographed by the entire team and Coach Coale. 12 pink Oklahoma women s basketball warm-up T-shirts to be autographed by the entire team and Coach Coale. To bid on items, visit the online auctions page at SoonerSports. com. Bidding on Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund Auction items will close Friday, Feb. 19, one week following the game. I think it is a great opportunity for OU students to help promote breast cancer awareness, Coale said. I know our students want to make a difference, but may not be able to help financially, so this is a way for the Sooner Nation to support the WBCA s `Think Pink initiative. Come to our games and you ll be fighting breast cancer. The first game that counted towards the total was when Oklahoma hosted Texas A&M on Pack the Place Pink Night Tuesday, Feb. 12. Student attendance for that game was 428. The Sooners also have home games Saturday, Feb. 23, against No. 17/16 Oklahoma State and Sunday, March 2, versus Texas. The three home games that close out our regular season will all be pivotal in the Big 12 Championship race, Coale said. So our students can play a significant role in our quest for another Big 12 title. Admission to Oklahoma women s basketball games is free for OU students with a valid student ID.

National Attendance Leader Oklahoma set a program record for attendance last season and, if early indications prove true, another record should be set in After 10 home games, OU s per game attendance average stands at 9,900 currently No. 3 in the nation for average home game attendance. The top two teams -- Tennessee and Connecticut -- have larger home seating capacities than OU s arena. Oklahoma was No. 4 in national attendance last season and No. 2 in the Big 12 Conference with an average of 10,437 in the seats for OU s 12 home games. Season Ticket Update The OU Athletics Ticket Office has sold 6,596 season ticket packages. The number breaks the record of 6,465 season tickets bought last season. Though reserved level season tickets have sold out, general admission season tickets remain and fans are encouraged to purchase them prior to the start of the season. GA season tickets are available for $115. Group and single game tickets became available Monday, Nov. 19. Single game tickets for home games are $8 for adults and $5 for youths (K-12). The Sooner fan base is one of the nation s fastest growing. The Oklahoma women s basketball team ranked No. 4 in attendance last season, averaging 10,437 fans. That was an increase of 37 percent from the season when Lloyd Noble Center games averaged 7,630, which was an increase of 35 percent over the previous season. Fans can purchase season tickets by calling th OU Ticket Office at (800) 456-GoOU or online at SoonerSports.com. Team Goals Sherri Coale has two team goals for the Sooners in One, to be one of the top three teams in field goal percentage defense, which OU was last season at No. 3. Two, is to cut down on turnovers and, specifically, be in the top three in assist-to-turnover ratio. Only restricted admission tickets remain. Restricted admission tickets are $8 and go on sale when doors open at 11:30 a.m. The ticket provides entry but does not guarantee a seat. The matchup in Stillwater was attended by 13, the most to watch a women s basketball game in the state of Oklahoma. Coale s 250th Victory Sherri Coale earned her 250th victory in her 12th year as the head coach of the Oklahoma Sooners. The Sooners defeated Texas A&M, 68-56, on Tuesday, Feb. 12, for the milestone win. Coale s is OU s all-time leader in coaching victories and winning percentage. 1,000th Game in Sooner History Oklahoma started its women s basketball program for the season and is approaching its 1,000th game. To date, the Sooners are 10 games shy of 1,000 in program history. There are six games left in the regular season, which would mean that if OU failed to get a first-round bye for the Big 12 Tournament, the first opportunity to play 1,000 would be in the Championship Game. OU s all-time record is (.580). Kay Yow Cancer Fund Auction Fans can bid on several items, including authentic equipment and apparel, that will be used in OU s Pack the Place Pink Night on Tuesday, Feb. 12, when Texas A&M visits during the WBCA s Think Pink Week. First stop, Waco. After dropping a thriller on their home court, the Sooners and Bears revisit one of the best rivalries in the Big 12 Conference. The first meeting featured 15 lead changes and 10 ties in the score before the Lady Bears pulled away late. Angela Tisdale scored 35 points while OU s Courtney Paris dropped 28 as two of the conference s stars played their games to near perfection. Tisdale leads Baylor with a scoring average of 14.8 points. Rachel Allison supplies 13.2 per game and is the top rebounder with 8.6 per contest. Baylor lost team captain and junior guard Jhasmin Player, who scored 14 against the Sooners, to an ACL tear on Feb. 2. The Lady Bears have lost two of three games, both on the road, since. Baylor has the conference s top scoring defense and No. 3 scoring offense. Oklahoma is No. 7 and No. 2, respectively, in those categories. THE All-Time SERIES Oklahoma meets Baylor for the 31st time when the Sooners travel to Waco, Texas, for Sunday s game at the Ferrell Center. Oklahoma leads the series with Baylor The last meeting, a decision for the Lady Bears in Norman on Jan. 20, 2008, snapped OU s six-game winning streak in the series. The series has traditionally been all about streaks. After four straight wins by OU, Baylor followed with four straight. In 1999, the Sooners began an 11-game winning streak against the Bears before having a four-game drought in 2004 and Under Sherri Coale, who is 17-9 against Baylor, OU lost its first four meetings before winning the next 11. Under Coale is Waco, OU is 7-4 against Baylor. Oklahoma has never followed a loss in Norman with a win in Waco. 5 The Circus Comes to Waco When Connecticut visited Norman, Okla., to play the Sooners during the season, a then-record crowd of 10,713 attended the game at the Lloyd Noble Center. OU head coach Sherri Coale likened the experience to the circus coming to town. It seems that Oklahoma now has its own three rings. Victorious after Vacation Oklahoma s five-day layoff between the Texas A&M and Baylor games is its longest since conference games began Jan. 9. Excluding its season opener, Oklahoma is 5-0 in when playing a game after a rest of five or more days. A visit by the Sooners in boosts its opponent s attendance by 70 percent over its season average. This is up from 41 percent during the season. Road Game Vs. That figure bested the 12,112 that turned out for OU s inaugural Cheer Like A Champion game, formerly the WhiteOUt, against Baylor in Snapping the Streak Oklahoma has a tough chore in stopping Baylor s 15-game home winning streak, the sixth longest active streak in NCAA Division I women s basketball. However, ending home court winning streaks is nothing new for OU. The Sooners stopped Iowa State s 15-game home winning streak on Jan. 9, and look to return the favor to the Lady Bears, who ended OU s home court winning streak at nine games during their Jan. 20 meeting in Norman. 6 Paris on Naismith, Wooden Midseason Lists For the third straight season, OU junior Courtney Paris highlights the Naismith Trophy and Wooden Award midseason candidate lists released during the last week of January. The Naismith midseason list recognized 20 possible candidates while the Wooden list had 31. Points in the Paris Coined by Nancy Lieberman after witnessing OU s dominating inside game against Georgia, Oklahoma opponents can forget about outscoring the Sooners in the paint thanks to the Paris twins. OU outscores opponents in the paint by an average of 43 to 21. Courtney supplies 15 per game (33 percent) in the paint while Ashley contributes eight points (18 percent) in the paint per game. Together the sisters average 23 points in the paint -- as much as the entire opposing roster and half of OU s total. CP3 s D Lost in the marvel of Courtney Paris double-double streak is her stellar defense. Paris has had an equally remarkable season defending the post as she had held her opposing matchup to an average of 7.3 points, 5.1 rebounds and 36 percent field goal shooting. Of those opposing players, only four have reached their respective season scoring averages and just two their rebounding average against Paris. Against Paris and the Sooners, Maryland s Crystal Langhorne, Tennessee s Nicky Anosike and Georgia s Tasha Humphrey have made just 5-of-29 (17 percent) field goal attempts. Double-Double Superlatives Talk about Courtney Paris double-double success gets stale, especially when she has had just three games in her career without one, the last being over 800 days ago. Consider this: Double Double-Double Paris has played eight career games in which she has reached 20 points and 20 rebounds. Double-Double Animal Style Paris has 25 career games in which she has reached a double-double and recorded five or more blocks. The last being her monster game versus Texas (Feb. 3) when she nearly had a triple-double in the first half. Burning Lots of Rubber With the speed and quickness Danielle Robinson flaunts, one can expect the Oklahoma freshman wears out shoes on a regular basis. The San Jose, Calif., native actually has quite a collection of over 50 sneakers -- and that number doesn t include dress shoes -- that she keeps in her dorm room in Norman. Oklahoma s Midcourt Taking SHAPE If dealing with Paris twins, D-Rob and J-Plum weren t enough, the January successes of forward Nyeshia Stevenson and Amanda Thompson and increased playing time of Carlee Roethlisberger have given OU s opponents three extra triple-threats on which to focus. Thompson scored 13.1 points per game in seven January contests, up from 6.5 in her previous 21 starts. She also increased her defense as her blocks and steals per game to start the new year were nearly double that of her past one-and-a-half seasons. Stevenson played a career high 32 minutes against Kansas and led the Sooners in scoring for the first time in her career with 15 points. She also had a game-high five assists. Against Colorado, Stevenson supplied 16 points in the second half -- on 7-of-10 field goal shooting. Roethlisberger, who is regularly first or second off the bench, has played 13 minutes per game the past nine contests, up from nine per game to start the season. RECAPPING TEXAS A&M Coach Sherri Coale didn t need any type of inspirational talk at halftime to rally Oklahoma and pick up her 250th career win. She let the players figure it out for themselves. Jenna Plumley shook off a sloppy start to score a season-high 18 points and Courtney Paris added 20 points and 11 rebounds as the 10th-ranked Sooners came from behind to beat Texas A&M (No. 19 ESPN/USA Today, No. 20 AP) on Tuesday night. Oklahoma cleaned up its game after committing 17 first-half turnovers, and Plumley broke out of a shooting slump to hit two of her four 3-pointers as the Sooners took control right after halftime. Oklahoma (18-4, 8-2 Big 12) made 12 of its first 16 shots to start the second half and won after trailing at halftime for only the second time in six tries this season. Oklahoma quickly erased a six-point halftime deficit by starting the second half on an 11-0 run, with Plumley s 3-pointer from the right giving the Sooners a edge. She had another 3-pointer in an eight-point surge that Amanda Thompson finished with a jumper in the lane to make it The Aggies responded with back-to-back baskets by A Quonesia Franklin and Patrice Reado, but Paris and twin sister Ashley Paris scored six straight points to restore a double-digit lead for Oklahoma. Texas A&M (17-7, 5-5) never got closer than 10 after that and had a four-game winning streak snapped. Reado hit her first six shots and scored 19 points, the secondhighest total of her career, despite fighting through migraine headaches to lead Texas A&M. Takia Starks added 13 points with six turnovers, while Danielle Gant and Morenike Atunrase scored 11 apiece. Freshman point guard Danielle Robinson scored all 15 of her points in the second half, when the Sooners shot 65 percent (17-for-26). Ashley Paris added 10 rebounds. Postgame Notes Coale s Challenge: OU head coach Sherri Coale pledged to donate $1 to each the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund and OU s Campus Activities Council for every student in attendance at OU s final three home games. After one game, the student attendance total is 468. The win was Coale s 250th in her 12th season as Oklahoma s head coach. Coale s overall record is (.672). Coale is the program s all-time leader in coaching victories and winning percentage. The attendance of 12,168 was a Lloyd Noble Center women s basketball attendance record. The previous record was 12,112 set in OU s whiteout game versus Baylor on Feb. 12, The Sooners had 17 first-half turnovers to match its most in a half (17 in first half versus Kansas on Jan. 30). OU had just four turnovers in the second half compared to Texas A&M s nine. After trailing at halftime, OU opened the second half with an 11-0 run. Courtney Paris Paris had 3 blocks to pass Cisti Greenwalt (Texas Tech, 121 games, ) as the Big 12 s career blocked shots record holder. Paris and Greenwalt were tied at 300 blocks entering Tuesday s game. Paris now has 303 career blocks. Paris recorded her 83rd consecutive double-double. It was the 88th career double-double for Paris, who has played 91 collegiate games. Entering the night, Paris was tied with Tim Duncan, who holds the NCAA men s record, at 87 career double-doubles. Paris reached 20 points scored for the fourth straight game (all played in February). Jenna Plumley Plumley, who was scoreless in the past two games on 0-for-9 field goal shooting, scored a team-leading nine first-half points. Plumley made at least four 3-pointers for the fourth time this season and eighth time in the sophomore s career, but the first time since the Sooners sixth game versus Arkansas State on Dec. 2, Plumley finished the game with a season high 18 points surpassing her previous best of 15. Danielle Robinson Robinson scored all of her 15 points in the second half. Her record for points in a half is 17 from her second-half performance versus Iowa State. Robinson was 5-of-5 from the free throw line, besting her 4-for-4 charity stripe performance against Nebraska (Jan. 16).

Paris has started against a player with equal or greater height on 25 occassions. Paris averages 18.8 points and 15.2 rebounds, just under career averages of 21.3 an 15.4, when the opposing team s starting forward/center is 6-4 or taller. Conversely, an opponent of equal or greater height to Paris averages just 9.7 points and 5.9 rebounds. Paris tallest matchup was 6-9 Alyssa DeHaan of Michigan State. DeHaan netted just 10 points and five boards against Paris as the Sooners rallied to win, 66-55, in their largest second-half comeback in program history. No. 3 s Company Courtney Paris scored a season high 30 points against Colorado, but the scenario of Paris as OU s leading scorer is becoming less common as the talent around her and the double- and tripleteaming defenses increase. Danielle Robinson s 20 points against South Carolina (Dec. 30) marked the fourth consecutive game in which a different Sooner was the team leader in points scored (Courtney Paris, 17 at Tulsa; Amanda Thompson, 14 at Michigan State; and Jenny Vining, 20 vs. Central Arkansas). This came after Ashley and Courtney Paris spent the first eight games of the season splitting games as the team s leading scorer with Ashley getting the honor three times and Courtney five. Danielle Robinson was OU s leading scorer against Iowa State (23) and Nebraska (22) and Amanda Thompson led at OSU with 18. Until this season, Courtney never missed two games without being her team s leading scorer until Ashley posted the high number in OU s two games in Cancun against Arizona State and Mississippi State. Last season, Courtney Paris was OU s leading scorer in all but five games. Jenna Plumley, Leah Rush and Chelsi Welch were the others that scored. During her freshman season, C. Paris led in all but five games with Rush, Welch and Erin Higgins also getting leading scoring honors during the year. The last time four different Sooners were the leading point scorers in consecutive games was during the season when it happened in games 3 through 6. Owning Up To THE Glass A number of jabs have been punched at Courtney Paris about how many of her rebounds are from her own missed shots. Only 32 (28 percent) of her total offensive rebounds come after her own missed field goal. Even if you subtracted those boards from her season total, she would average 13.7, well above the second best mark in the nation. Paris is also 13-for-19 (.684) from the free throw line following a foul on a offensive rebound or putback, with a 6-for-11 (.546) mark when it is from her own missed shot. A Perfect 10 Courtney Paris 10 points against South Carolina (Dec. 30) was a personal low, meaning she has never scored outside of double figures in her career. Only two other NCAA Division I players LaToya Thomas, Mississippi State ( ) and Chandi Jones, Houston ( ) have finished their careers scoring in double figures in every game. The most double-figure scoring games was accomplished by Sophia Young of Baylor ( ), who scored 10 or more points in 130 of her 139 career games. Paris 10 points were 10.5 percent of OU s total 95 against South Carolina, marking her lowest percent contribution since her career began. However, Paris did manage to grasp 24 rebounds, two from her personal best and the second most in a single game by a Division I player this season. Paris second lowest percentage contribution came one game before against Central Arkansas, when she provided 14 of the team s program record 121. Paris played only 22 minutes in the game. Courtney s 22 points and 14 rebounds pushed the streak to 68 consecutive games. The record turned 800 days old on Feb. 9, 2007, the day Paris matched Tim Duncan s NCAA men s career double-double record of 87 with a 30 point, 14 rebound effort against Colorado. Let s Go Streaking After review of the Mississippi State game by both institutions, Courtney Paris double-double streak was restored. Though it is widely believed that Courtney Paris owns both the NCAA women s basketball Division I records for career and consecutive double-doubles, those records are still being researched. However, the NCAA double-double records for men s basketball do exist. The longest men s double-double streak was 40 games by North Carolina s Billy Cunningham, which coincidentally began on the same day (Dec. 5), 43 years prior to Paris streak. The most career double-doubles by the men belongs to Tim Duncan, who recorded 87 in his four seasons at Wake Forest ( ). The top five men s records are below. ANOTHER Record ON THE HORIZON As a freshman, Courtney Paris set the NCAA single-season record with 539 rebounds and neared the mark as a sophomore with 526. As a junior, Paris is averaging 15.4 boards, better than a 15.0 rate as a freshman. Paris has owned OU s offensive rebounds record since last season and took over as the No. 1 rebounder in the Sooners season opener. She passed Caton Hill for No. 1 on OU s defensive rebounding list with seven defensive boards versus Mississippi State (Nov. 27). Paris currently has 1,395 career rebounds with 474 coming off the offensive glass and 921 defensively. Against Georgia (Jan. 27) Paris passed Baylor s Sophia Young (1,316 during ) for the Big 12 Conference record for total rebounds. Young owns the league s career offensive rebounds (489) record. Paris claimed Young s Big 12 career record for defensive rebounds (827) with 10 in the game at Iowa State on Jan. 9. However, while these freshmen are very talented and will make their names known quickly, they do draw comparisons to some familiar faces. Danielle Robinson 5-9 G San Jose, Calif. Robinson was the Sooners surprise pickup of the 2007 recruiting class. After acknowledging OU was off her radar until her official visit, Robinson made the decision to be a Sooner before she checked her bags for the return flight home. The speedy guard will see time both on and off the point and draws comparisons to Dionnah Jackson. Carlee Roethlisberger 6-1 F Findlay, Ohio Having the third most recognizable surname speaks to the star power on the Sooners roster. Yes, Carlee is the sister of Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben, but she may the family s best athlete. Roethlisberger is leanest Sooner and the one with the greatest ceiling in terms of untapped basketball potential. Her play resembles another lean forward in former Sooner Leah Rush. Jenny Vining 5-9 G Marshall, Ark. This Arkansas high school star will remind fans of former Sooner Erin Higgins because of her 3-point range and accuracy, although Vining s may prove to be better in both cases. Head coach Sherri Coale says that Vining might be the best freshman she has ever coached because of her ability to quickly learn from mistakes and make correct adjustments in practice. Lauren Willis 5-11 G Overland Park, Kan. Willis was an all-stater in Kansas and walkedon to the OU program. She has been a stellar defender in practice as was quite the spark in OU s preseason intrasquad scrimmage as she went 3- for-3 from beyond the arc in limited action. Willis is the daughter of Steve Willis, a placekicker on Kansas State football s first ever bowl team, and the former Lois Groen, an All-American and Big Eight Conference track and field champion at Iowa State. C. Paris Big 12 Preseason POY For the second straight season, Oklahoma s Courtney Paris was named the Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year in the coaches vote. The 6-4 center, who averaged 23.5 points and 15.9 rebounds, was last season s Big 12 Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year after leading the Sooners to title defenses of the conference s regular season and tournament championships. Ashley Paris was an honorable mention for the All-Big 12 team. Sooners Picked Second in Big 12 The Oklahoma Sooners were picked to finish second in this season s Big 12 Conference women s basketball standings in a preseason poll voted by the league s coaches. Texas A&M, the Big 12 co-champions with Oklahoma, received seven of 12 first-place votes to edge the Sooners, who received five first-place votes, in a split decision between the two teams. Wooden Award committee Wednesday, Oct. 31. Paris, a two-time Wooden All-American, was also a preseason nominee last year and was one of 16 finalists for the 2007 Women s Wooden Award. Tennessee s Candace Parker was the 2007 recipient of the honor. The award is named for the three-time college basketball All-American, 1932 National Player of the Year and 10-time national championship coach John Wooden. Created in 1976, the John R. Wooden Award is the most prestigious individual honor in college basketball. It is bestowed upon the nation s best player at an institution of higher education who has proven to his or her university that he or she is making progress toward graduation and maintaining a cumulative 2.0 GPA. Previous winners include such notables as Larry Bird (1979), Michael Jordan (1984), Tim Duncan (1997), and last year s recipients, Kevin Durant of Texas and Candace Parker of Tennessee. Paris and Team USA Qualify for Olympics Courtney Paris missed 30 days of the Sooners preseason training...and head coach Sherri Coale probably couldn t have been more pleased with the result. Courtney Paris, one of two collegians playing for the USA Basketball Women s Senior National Team, swept through the FIBA Americas Zone Tournament in Valdivia, Chile, winning the gold medal against Cuba on Sept. 30 and, more importantly, clinching a berth for the United States in next year s Olympic Games. Paris was a role-player for the U.S., as one of very few post players her size in international basketball. She averaged nine minutes per game as the Americans went through the tournament undefeated at 5-0. It was Paris seventh gold medal as part of a USA Basketball team. Paris and U21 Team win World Championship Paris earned twice as much gold this summer as she helped the USA Basketball Women s Under 21 Team to a World Championship title in July. The U.S. defeated Australia, 96-73, in the title game in Moscow, Russia, to give Paris and Team USA its fourth straight gold in age-group basketball. Paris played 39 games with USA Basketball in age group contests and never lost. She averaged 10.9 points and 8.0 rebounds in eight contests during the World Championships. SoonerSports.com Blog Even though she was out of the country, Courtney Paris kept everyone at home up to speed on her progress with USA Basketball via the OU Women s Basketball Blog on SoonerSports. com. OU head coach Sherri Coale submits regular postings and this season several OU players will enter the cyberspace realm with their own unique contributions. Red Bests White in Intrasquad Scrimmage The University of Oklahoma women s basketball team completed its intrasquad scrimmage Thursday night at the Lloyd Noble Center in front of 2,200 fans. Players split time between Red and White teams as they played four eight-minute quarters. The Red defeated White in three quarters and won the overall battle with a total score of Each period was intense and down to the wire as the largest margin of victory in any quarter was four points. White got the best of Red in the first, 21-17, but Red bounced back with victories in the final three quarters (25-22 in the second, in the third and in the fourth.) Courtney Paris led the Sooners with 27 total points. She shot 9-of-16 (.563) from the field and added nine points at the free throw line. Paris missed a double-double by one rebound, but made contributions elsewhere with four assists and a steal in 27 minutes on the court. Nyeshia Stevenson scored 26 points and added three steals and two assists to her stat line as she took full advantage of her athletic ability in several fast breaks and one-on-one situations. OU s four freshman played with no fear as guards Danielle Robinson and Jenny Vining scored 14 points apiece, Lauren Willis shot 3-of-3 from beyond the arc for nine points and forward Carlee Roethlisberger totaled seven points and seven rebounds. Also scoring in double figures were Rose Hammond (15), Jenna Plumley (11) and Abi Olajuwon (11). Plumley, who played 31 of a possible 32 minutes, was effective running the point, shooting 3-of-9 from 3-point range and counting nine assists with just three turnovers. Ashley Paris had a game-high 12 rebounds and Amanda Thompson led with four steals. Even fewer teams have had success while emphasizing the books on the same level as the balls. The symmetry is a trademark of Coale s program. She meticulously prepares her athletes to excel in the classroom and on the hardwood. In essence, master the game of life and the challenges presented on the court will fall like dominoes. Those obstacles have routinely been bulldozed during the Coale s 11 years as the head coach of Oklahoma. The numbers speak for themselves. Take for example the 21 straight semesters with a combined team GPA of 3.0 or better, the five Big 12 Regular Season Championships, the 68 Academic All-Big 12 honors, the four Big 12 Tournament Championships, the eight All-District Academic Team members, the eight straight NCAA Tournament appearances, the four Academic All-America team members and the five Sweet 16 appearances. The foundation was a laid years ago during a humble upbringing in the oil mining town of Healdton, Okla. Those morals have stood as the roots of Oklahoma women s basketball for 11 years. Now they are flourishing on an elite level. So as the Sooners sit on the cusp of the season with the biggest national spotlight in program history already glaring in their eyes, Coale and company are sticking to their roots.
