In just seven years at Baylor, the former All-American and Olympic gold medalist has guided the Lady Bear basketball program to the pinnacle of women s basketball, the 2005 NCAA national championship, six NCAA Tournament appearances and seven 20-win seasons. The 2005 national title was Baylor s first for a women s team sport and is the only basketball national title, men s or women s, in the Big 12 Conference s 11- year history. In winning the 2005 title, Mulkey became the first person, man or woman, to win a basketball national championship as a player, assistant coach and head coach. En route to the NCAA championship, the Lady Bears won their first Big 12 Conference championship and were the league s tournament champion as well. Mulkey has produced amazing results since taking over the reins of the program on April 4, 2000, averaging 26.1 wins a season. In her eight years at the program s helm, she has posted an impressive (.786) record which ranks her No. 7 nationally in winning percentage. Since taking over a squad that was just 7-20 the season prior to her arrival, Mulkey has guided the Lady Bears to seven postseason appearances, including six NCAA Tournaments and a trip to the WNIT finals. Mulkey s autobiography, Won t Back Down, hit bookstores on Nov. 1, MULKEY NEARING 200 VICTORIES With 198 career victories to her credit, eighth-year head coach Kim Mulkey needs just two more wins to reach the 200-win milestone. She will likely become the fourth fastest coach ever to reach the 200-win plateau, following: Fastest to 200 victories (NCAA Division I) Joan Bonvicini - Long Beach State (currently at Arizona) C. Vivian Stringer - Cheyney (currently at Rutgers) Andy Landers - Georgia Pat Summitt - Tennessee Tom Collen - Colorado State, Louisville (currently at Arkansas) Chris Weller - Maryland (retired) Tara VanDerveer - Stanford Geno Auriemma - Connecticut Kim Mulkey = 252 LADY BEAR LEADERS With 16 games under their belt, the Lady Bears boast five players averaging double-digit scoring. The bad news...the Lady Bears have only 10 players on their roster. One new coach has joined the staff since the season concluded. Richard Barron, former head coach at Princeton, came on board as associate head coach. He joins Jennifer Roberts, Damion McKinney and Johnny Derrick as a part of Coach Mulkey's staff. Baylor's returning starters include the squad s lone senior, 5-7 point guard Angela Tisdale, and juniors Rachel Allison (6-1, forward), Jessica Morrow (6-0, guard) and Jhasmin Player (5-10, guard). Also returning with experience under their belt are Danielle Wilson (6-3, post), Jessika Bradley (6-3, post), Kaitlin Oberg (6-2 post) and Haylee Abbe (5-10, guard). STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING FACTOIDS Angela Tisdale - No. 1 on the team in overall strength and endurance, lifting a combined 688 pounds on three lifts an improvement over last season s 595. Among the guards Tisdale is the leader in five of six categories, setting team high all-time records this off-season in the squat (311 lbs.), the bench press (180 lbs.) and in the chin-up rep test with 34. Though Tisdale s height is the shortest on the team, her vertical jump is the highest at 26.5, which places her third all-time behind only WNBA superstar Sophia Young and former national champion teammate Abiola Wabara. Of the seven measures of strength, power, and endurance, Tisdale is the team leader in four and is second in the other three. Jhasmin Player - Tied for the all-time best power clean at 198 lbs. and sits right behind Tisdale in three of the test measures. Her strength improvements in squats gave her the team best increase of 49 lbs., and landed her second all-time and on the team with a max of 300 lbs. She is also tied with Tisdale and sophomore Danielle Wilson for the greatest vertical jump improvement with an increase of 4.5 from Oct Oct Danielle Wilson - Has a wing span of 82 1/4, only five inches smaller than BU men s player Mamadou Diene (gee-ehn) who is 7 0 tall. In addition, she holds the team record for standing broad jump with a jump of 8 6. Haylee Abbe - Smashed the mile run time with a 5:32 mark, bettered the old mark of 6:09 set in 2003 by Jessika Stratton. Rachel Allison - Set the mile run record for post players with a mark of 6:02 set by Dionne Brown in 2003 and matches by Allison last season. BAYLOR VERSUS THE USA NATIONAL TEAM Awesome and awestruck...one word described the USA National Team, the other described the Baylor Lady Bears at the beginning of the exhibition game on Nov. 6. After falling behind 14-3 at the beginning of the contest, the Lady Bears gained their composure and fought back to go toe-to-toe with the elite squad. At the 3:23 mark of the first half, BU held a five-point lead, Going into the lockerroom at the half, the USA squad held a one-point advantage, However, the red, white and blue outscored the Lady Bears in the second stanza to claim an victory.
