NEW MEXICO... The reigning NCAA champion Baylor Lady Bears, currently ranked No. 10 in both the AP listing and the coaches poll, enter the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a 25-6 overall record and winners of 60 of their last 70 games. The Lady Bears are playing in their third straight NCAA Tournament and fifth in the past six seasons. All NCAA appearances have come since head coach Kim Mulkey-Robertson assumed the program s helm. The contest versus 24thranked New Mexico is BU s ninth against a ranked opponent this season, the Lady Bears are 4-4 when matched against rated opponents and have won 14 of their last 18 versus ranked teams. The New Mexico Lobos, an 11 seed, advanced to the NCAA Tournament s second round with a resounding victory oversixth-seeded Florida on Saturday night. The Lobos come into the contest with a 22-9 record.

2 Baylor s Sophia Young, national player of the year candidate and Big 12 Player of the Year, leads Baylor in both scoring and rebounding at 22.2 points and 9.9 rebounds a game. The Kodak All-American is No. 1 in the Big 12 in scoring and No. 3 in rebounding. Sophomore point guard Angela Tisdale ranks second on the squad in scoring at 12.0 an outing. Senior guard Chameka Scott ranks third on the team in scoring (8.8) and No. 2 in rebounding at 6.3 a game while Abiola Wabara, a junior post, manages 8.7 points and 5.8 boards. New Mexico is led by 6-1 sophomore forward Dionnne Marsh s (Flower Mound, Texas) 15.6 points a game. Also joining Marsh in double-digit scoring are junior guard (5-10) Katie Montgomery at 11.1 and 6-1 senior guard Abbie Letz with 10.2 a game. Letz also leads the squad in rebounding at 7.6 a contest. Sophia Young needs just two assists to join an elite group, which currently consists of three players, who have tallied 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds, 300 steals and 300 assists in their NCAA Division I careers. The elite group includes Cheryl Miller (USC), Chamique Holdsclaw and Tamicha Catchings (Tennessee). Young currently has 2,433 points, 1,294 rebounds, 311 steals and 298 assists. 4 SOPHIA YOUNG NAMED TO BIG 12 10th ANNIVERSARY TEAM... The Big 12 Conference recently announced its Women s Basketball 10th Anniversary Team, as selected by a combined media panel and on-line fan poll. In order to be eligible for consideration, candidates must have been an All-Big 12 First Team selection at least once in their careers. Lady Bear basketball is well-represented in the All-Big 12 Conference Women s Basketball Awards released March 3 by the league office. Sophia Young was honored as Big 12 Player of the Year, Abiola Wabara was named co-defensive Player of the Year and Angela Tisdale, Chameka Scott and Wabara were All-Big 12 selections. Young and Wabara were named to the league s All-Defensive Team as well. All awards were selected by the league s coaches. BAYLOR QUICK HITS... Sophia Young has averaged 27.2 points and 11.7 rebounds in last six games, while scoring 20 or more points in seven of the last eight games. Young has tallied 689 points on season, 28 more than she recorded in 36 games a year ago and the sixthbest single-season effort in school history and best total of NCAA era. In 10 career NCAA Tournament games, Sophia Young averages 22.1 points 8.6 rebounds, 2.9 steals and 2.8 assists a contest. In NCAA Division I statistics, Sophia Young ranks No. 2 in scoring (22.2), No. 23 in field goal percentage (.555) and No. 26 in rebounds (10.0) while Angela Tisdale is No. 14 in assists (5.9). Baylor s 30-game win streak equaled the 10th longest in NCAA Division I women s basketball history. BU is over its last 70 games. Seven of the 10 losses have come against ranked opponents. Baylor s four regular season Big 12 losses were by a combined total of 12 points (at Missouri-3, at Texas Tech-2, vs. Oklahoma-3, at Oklahoma-4). Angela Tisdale has shot 91.1 percent (41-of-45) at the free throw line in last eight games with 14 consecutive makes entering the New Mexico game. After a 2-2 start in Big 12 play, Baylor won 10 of its last 12 (both losses to Oklahoma) games. In the Big 12 Championship, Sophia Young averaged 26.3 points and 10.3 boards a contest. In regular season non-conference games this season, Baylor maintains a.279 (56-201) shooting percentage from 3-point range but in Big 12 regular season action it shot 37.3 percent (76-204). At the free throw line, the squad shoots.670 ( ) in non-conference play but was 251-of-335 (.749) in league action. Young is now the No. 2 scorer in Baylor history with 2,433 points, the highest point total since the sport came under NCAA sponsorship in Jordan Davis has missed only six free throws throughout her career (79-85,.929). Prior to missing her first free throw of the season at Texas Tech, she had drained 23 consecutive free throws. BU players hold down three of the top five spots in steals among league players. Sophia Young is No. 2 (2.23), Angela Tisdale ranks fourth (1.85) and Chameka Scott checks in at No. 5 (1.83). Baylor is (.910) under Mulkey-Robertson when scoring 70 or more points, including 75-3 (.962) when putting 80 or more on the scoreboard. Since coming to BU, Mulkey-Robertson has posted the highest win total (156) and winning percentage (.780) among Big 12 Conference programs. Young has produced double-digit scoring in 128 of 137 career games and 77 consecutive. The 128-game mark places her tied for first atop the NCAA double-digit scoring chart with LSU s Seimone Augustus. Young has a Big 12 record 60 career double-doubles to her credit. Five players, including all four Lady Bear freshmen, earned grade point averages of 3.0 or above for the fall semester (Sophia Young, Tricia Abbott, Rachel Allison, Jessica Morrow, Jhasmin Player) to earn a place on the Big 12 Commissioner s Honor Roll. Young posted a 4.0 mark. Baylor s 50-point win over Kansas was its largest ever in a Big 12 game and its biggest since a 53-point win over Sam Houston State in Sophia Young has produced 21 double-doubles in 41 career games against ranked (AP) teams. 5 Baylor s 25-point win at No. 21 Texas A&M (84-59) was the Lady Bears largest margin of victory over a ranked opponent. Baylor has shot 35.1 percent ( ) from 3-point range in its wins compared to 18.4 percent (14-76) in its losses. Offensively, the Lady Bears average 77.2 points in wins versus 64.7 points in losses. At the defensive end of the floor, Baylor yields 57.3 percent in its 25 victories compared to 73.7 ppg in its setbacks. Freshmen Rachel Allison and Jessica Morrow were a combined 14-of-18 (.777) from the floor against Texas Tech, as both registered career-highs in scoring with 16 for Allison and 15 for Morrow. Baylor is 19-2 on the season and 44-5 over the past two years when at least three Lady Bears record double-digit scoring efforts. The Lady Bears, who placed a season-high six players in double figures en route to victories over Kansas and Nebraska earlier this season, are 26-1 over the past two years when four or more players reach double figures, including 13-1 this season. The Lady Bears, defending NCAA champions, are currently ranked No. 10 in the most recent coaches poll after debuting at No 7 in the preseason poll. The AP poll s March 13 ranking lists Baylor at No. 10 for the fifth week this season. Baylor has now been ranked in a school-record 48 straight AP polls dating back to week nine of the listing when it broke in at No. 24. 6 CHALKED UP ANOTHER 20-WIN SEASON... After posting 20-win seasons in each of her first five seasons, Kim Mulkey-Robertson and the Lady Bears made it six straight as they pushed their season record to 20-5 with an triumph over Colorado. Prior to Mulkey-Robertson s arrival, the program had posted six 20-plus win seasons in 26 years and five of those were during pre-ncaa competition when there were no game limits. Since the NCAA began sponsoring women s basketball in the season Baylor had posted only one 20-win season ( , 20-11) prior to Mulkey-Robertson assuming the reins of the Lady Bear program. At 25-6, Baylor enjoys its third-best record after 31 games in Mulkey-Robertson s tenure behind a 28-3 mark a year ago and a 26-5 record in BU has posted 25 or more wins for the third straight year and fourth time in the last six years. THE COACHES... Baylor coach Kim Mulkey-Robertson is in her sixth season and owns a head coaching record which equates to a.780 winning percentage. 8 Baylor s Big 12 record under Mulkey-Robertson: Home Away BETTER IN BIG 12 GAMES... The Lady Bears have improved their three-point and free throw shooting since beginning Big 12 play. In non-conference games, Baylor maintained a.298 ( ) shooting percentage from 3-point range but in Big 12 action it shot 37.3 percent (76-204) from behind the arc. In free throws, the squad shot.656 ( ) in nonconference play but was 251-of-335 (.749) in league action. In fact in BU s last 11 games, including the LSU contest, Baylor is 181-of-232 from the charity stripe for 76.2 percent. BY THE NARROWEST OF MARGINS... Baylor s four Big 12 regular season losses this season were by a combined total of 12 points. It dropped a threepoint decision at Missouri (64-61), lost by two (64-62) at Texas Tech, lost to Oklahoma by three, 73-70, in Waco and by four (81-77 in OT) to the Sooners in Norman. Baylor, 2-4 in games decided by five or fewer points this season, has won its last two games by a combined total of six points, a win over Kansas State and a decision versus Texas A&M in the Big 12 Tournament. Baylor opened the season with an win over No. 9 Georgia in the State Farm Tip-Off Classic in Lubbock, Texas. BU then followed that with a triumph over No. 23 Texas, suffered a loss at home to 17th-ranked Oklahoma, a road defeat at No. 4 LSU (88-57) and a road loss at No. 9 Oklahoma (81-77 OT). The Lady Bears entered their Jan. 4 big 12 opener at Missouri sporting the nation s longest win streak, a school-record 30-game string. Before the loss at Missouri, Baylor s last loss came on Jan. 22, 2005, in Austin, Texas, when the Texas Longhorns handed the Lady Bears a setback. Baylor went go on to reel off 20 straight wins in 2005, including victories over three No.1 NCAA Tournament seeds, North Carolina, LSU and Michigan State, to claim its first national title.
