Baylor faces three more games within a five-day span (TAMU-CC, Nov. 30; Southeast Missouri, Dec. 2; Sam Houston State, Dec. 4) before a well-deserved nine-day break for final exams. Two down and one more to go in that three-game stretch after a win over Texas A&M-CC on Thursday evening and an victory over Southeast Missouri State on Saturday night. Despite the exhausting schedule, the Lady Bears have managed to post an 8-1 record which includes wins over ninth-ranked LSU and No. 22 BYU and a championship of the Junkanoo Jam s Lucaya Division. The Lady Bears are playing their most challenging non-conference schedule in program history. Baylor has played three teams ranked among the Associated Press top 25 (No. 9 Purdue, No. 11 LSU, No. 23 BYU) and two others who are receiving votes (Hofstra, South Dakota State). In addition, Baylor s Dec. 17 opponent, UCLA, is receiving votes in the AP Poll. Nine games into the season, two players are averaging double-digit scoring. Senior All-America candidate Bernice Mosby leads the way with 19.8 a game while junior point guard Angela Tisdale scores 10.3 points. Mosby is averaging a team-leading 10.1 rebounds a game while sophomore post Rachel Allison is the squad s second-leading rebounder with 7.7 a game and is followed by freshman post Danielle Wilson s 5.9. In just six years at Baylor, the former All-American and Olympic Gold medalist has guided the Lady Bear basketball program to the pinnacle of women s basketball, the 2005 NCAA national championship, five NCAA Tournament appearances and six 20-win seasons. The 2005 national title was Baylor s first for a women s team sport and the only basketball national title, men s or women s, in the Big 12 Conference s 10-year history. In winning the 2005 title, Mulkey became the first person, man or woman, to win a basketball national championship as a player, assistant coach and head coach. En route to the NCAA championship, the Lady Bears won their first Big 12 Conference championship and were the league s tournament champion as well. Mulkey has produced amazing results since taking over the reins of the program on April 4, 2000, averaging 26.1 wins a season. In her seven years at the program s helm, she has posted an impressive (.782) record which ranks her No. 7 nationally in winning percentage. Since taking over a squad that was just 7-20 the season prior to her arrival, Mulkey has guided the Lady Bears to six postseason appearances, including five NCAA Tournaments and a trip to the 2003 WNIT finals. In 2004, the Lady Bears made their first trip to the NCAA Sweet 16 and have now played in three straight Sweet 16s. TISDALE AND MOSBY HONORED Angela Tisdale and Bernice Mosby were named to the Junkanoo Jam s All-Tournament team with Tisdale garnering MVP honors as well. Tisdale led Baylor to three wins last week, including a victory over ninth-ranked LSU and a Junkanoo Jam championship. For her performance during the two games of the Junkanoo Jam, Tisdale was named the tournament s MVP. In the championship game against South Dakota State, Tisdale recorded her first career double-double with a 12-point, career-high tying 10-assist performance, Baylor s first double-double with points and assists since In addition, Mosby was honored by the Big 12 Conference for the second straight week. On Nov. 20 she was named both Big 12 Player and Rookie of the Week and on Nov. 27 repeated as Rookie of the Week. Mosby led Baylor in scoring in two of three games last week including a 21- point, 17-rebound performance against ninth-ranked LSU. Mosby, who has scored in double-digits in every game and recorded four double-doubles this season, averaged 15.7 points, 8.7 rebounds and 1.7 blocks a game in Baylor s three victories. Baylor is 1-2 in games played on that date including a 1-1 record at Waco and an 0-1 road mark. Baylor defeated Western Michigan (68-60) in 1987, lost to Wichita State (70-68) in 1992 in Arlington, Texas and lost in 1995 to Arkansas State (64-57) at Waco. SCOUTING THE BEARKATS The Sam Houston State Bearkats, currently 3-3 on the season, have been idle since Nov. 27. First-year Bearkat head coach and former Sam Houston State player Brenda Welch-Nichols came to the Huntsville, Texas, campus from Mercer University after serving as its head coach. The Bearkats victories have come against Texas Southern (81-65), LSU- Shreveport (65-56) and Wiley (97-76), all three contests were home games. They have suffered road defeats to SMU (84-50), Texas (84-56) and Rice (91-48). Sam Houston State is led by senior forward Erica Parker and freshman forward Whitney Smith, both of whom average 10.0 points a game, while junior forward Britney Harris follows closely with 9.5 an outing. Parker is also the squad s top rebounder at 5.2 a game while junior center Adah Wells hauls down 4.3 a contest. SERIES RECORD This will be the 14th meeting between the two schools. Baylor holds a 9-4 lead and has won four straight meetings. Sam Houston State s last win over the Lady Bears came on Dec. 11, 1997 at Huntsville, Baylor owns a 5-1 record in games played in Waco. The Bearkats last Waco victory came on Nov. 27, 1989 (87-81). This contest will be the fifth straight season the two squads have met. On Dec. 29 last year the Lady Bears posted an win in Waco VERSUS THE SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE This will be Baylor s 103rd game against a Southland Conference team and it holds a series record lead. They are listed at No. 13 in the most recent (Nov. 27) AP Poll which extends their school-record streak to 52 straight weeks. BU is also ranked No. 13 in the current USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll. BLOCKING BUNCH If the Lady Bears continue their current pace blocking shots, they could break the record for blocks in a season that the squad set in 35 games with 204. At this point of the season in the Lady Bears had blocked 79 shots, while the current Baylor squad has blocked 78 so far. Freshman Danielle Wilson and senior Bernice Mosby have combined to account for 44 of this year s rejections. In fact, Wilson could set a record for blocked shots by a Baylor freshman. She currently has 31 and former Lady Bear Sophia Young owns the top mark at 43 during her rookie season in HITTING A DRY SPELL In the three games prior to the victory over Southeast Missouri State (SEMO), the Lady Bears had struggled from long distance. They were 2-23 (.087) over that span from threepoint range. Against SEMO the Lady Bears found their range and were an impressive 7- of-15 (.467), including four treys by freshman Latara Darrett and three by Angela Tisdale. HOME SWEET HOME Baylor will play only three games away from the Ferrell Center during its non-conference schedule, as 11 games will be in the friendly confines of the Ferrell Center (North Texas, Hofstra, BYU, Purdue, LSU, Texas A&M- CC, Southeast Missouri, Sam Houston State, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, North Carolina A&T and Prairie View A&M). The Lady Bears spent their Thanksgiving break in the Bahamas where they competed in the Junkanoo Jam in Freeport, Grand Bahamas and won the championship of the Lucaya Division with wins over UCF and South Dakota State. Baylor s only other non-conference road trip will be to southern California to play UCLA on Dec. 17. ALMOST PERFECT Under Coach Mulkey, Baylor sports a 49-3 non-conference mark in the Ferrell Center, with two losses coming in postseason play. In 2002 Baylor lost in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to Drake, and lost to Auburn (64-63) in the championship game of the 2003 Postseason WNIT. Purdue ended Baylor s 20-game non-league win streak on Nov. 19. Baylor s overall record versus non-conference opponents since Coach Mulkey s arrival is MULKEY VERSUS RANKED OPPONENTS With Baylor s victory over ninth-ranked LSU on Tuesday, Nov. 21, head coach Kim Mulkey is now against ranked opponents, including a 2-1 record this season. Since a loss to No. 15 Texas A&M during the season, Baylor is 16-6 versus ranked opponents. BU ONE OF WINNINGEST TEAMS OVER THE LAST FIVE YEARS Over the last five seasons, the Lady Bears rank among the nation s top programs in both winning percentage and victories. Baylor sits at No. 11, the highest ranking Big 12 team, in winning percentage at.791 (136-36).Kansas State sits at No. 12 while Oklahoma is No. 19. The Lady Bears are No. 7 when ranked by victories (136), also tops among Big 12 teams. FRESHMAN REJECTION When she s in the game, freshman post Danielle Wilson has the ability to alter the opponent s game plan. In just eight games Wilson has used her expansive wing span (82 1/4 ) to block a team- and league-leading 31 Head-To-Head shots for an average of 3.44 an outing. In fact, Wilson has recorded at least two blocks in eight-of-nine games this season. Wilson broke Oklahoma s Courtney Paris WNIT blocked shot record. Paris set her record last season with 12, Wilson finished Preseason WNIT competition with 20. IMPRESSIVE POST PLAY In Baylor s win over ninth-ranked LSU, a trio of Baylor post players totally dominated the game. Bernice Mosby and Danielle Wilson both produced double-doubles and Rachel Allison was one rebound shy of a double-double. Mosby led the team with a 21-point, 17- rebound performance while Wilson notched her first career double-double with 11 points and 10 boards. Allison scored 10 points and hauled down nine rebounds in the winning effort. In Baylor s three games last week, the quarter of Mosby, Wilson, Allison and Jessika Bradley scored 55 percent of Baylor s points. In addition, Bradley (8), Wilson (6) and Mosby (5) blocked 19 shots, to average 6.3 a game. SEASON TICKET SALES Last season the Lady Bears set a season ticket sales record and also set a single-season attendance record, topping the 100,000 mark for the first time in school history. Baylor has already broken last season s season ticket mark with over 5,000 sold so far this year. In , Baylor finished sixth nationally among NCAA Division I schools in home attendance with 7,717 fans a game. Angela Tisdale is the league s best free throw shooter at 90.2 percent (37-of-41). Bernice Mosby ranks No. 3 in the league in scoring (19.6) and No. 6 in rebounding (9.8). Rachel Allison and Danielle Wilson rank No. 10 and 18, respectively in rebounding. Wilson is the league s leader in blocked shots with 29 on the season for a 3.63 per game average. She has over twice as many blocks as Oklahoma s Courtney Paris who sits at No. 2 with 12 (2.4/game). ALL-AMERICA CANDIDATE MOSBY ALREADY GARNERING HONORS Senior transfer Bernice Mosby, an All- America candidate, was named Preseason Newcomer of the Year by the Big 12 coaches. Mosby, in her two-plus seasons at the University of Florida, averaged 13.5 points and 7.5 rebounds a game. She averaged a team-leading 15.5 points, 8.6 rebounds and 30.3 minutes a game before leaving the team in late March. She amassed 1,124 points and 625 rebounds at Florida and was voted 2004 Southeastern Conference Sixth Woman of the Year. Mosby was also named to the 2003 SEC All-Freshman team and secondteam all-sec by the coaches and media in Since her arrival at Baylor she has stepped up her averages and leads the Lady Bears and is one of the top players in the Big 12 at 19.8 points and 10.1 rebounds a game. Her mind should be eased somewhat since both new coaches have extensive recruiting contacts and the incoming freshman class has been ranked as one of the nation s best and most definitely the best in Lady Bear history. Two new coaches have joined the staff since the season concluded. Karen Aston came on board as associate head coach and recruiting coordinator, while Damion McKinney, the most recent addition, joined the program in mid- August. They join Jennifer Roberts and Johnny Derrick who are both in their seventh year as part of Coach Mulkey's staff. Baylor's seven newcomers, who include six freshmen, were dubbed the nation's No. 1 recruiting class by the All Star Girls Report. Senior Bernice Mosby (Brooksville, Fla.) will have one year of eligibility left after transfering to Baylor from Florida. She sat out the in accordance with NCAA transfer rules. LAST TIME OUT WACO, Texas - Bernice Mosby collected her fifth double-double of the season, scoring 21 points and adding 13 rebounds, as the senior led the No. 13 Baylor women's basketball team to an victory over Southeast Missouri State in action at the Ferrell Center on Saturday night. "We played better, with a little more pep in our step. Our defense set the tone for what we were trying to do offensively, head coach Kim Mulkey said. "When you have five players that score in double figures, extend a lead and make progress, that means you are improving. I thought we did all those things tonight." Baylor (8-1) was in control from the opening tip as the Lady Bears defense shined in the first half, holding the Redhawks to just 17 points on 7-of-29 (24.1 percent) shooting in the first half as BU built a lead at the break. It was more of the same for Baylor in the second half as Southeast Missouri State was unable to mount any sort of comeback as the Lady Bears cruised to a 34-point victory over the team from the Ohio Valley Conference. For the second time this season, five Baylor players scored in double figures as Latara Darrett came off the bench and tied a seasonhigh with four three-pointers in the victory en route to 12 points on the night. Angela Tisdale added a season-high 17 points in the victory, including three threepointers, while Jessica Morrow added 12 points while Danielle Wilson poured in 10 points in the win. Baylor held the edge in nearly every statistical category as the Lady Bears set a seasonhigh with 54 rebounds and forced 23 turnovers in the victory. Southeast Missouri State was led by Sonya Daugherty who scored 12 points off the bench while Lachelle Lyles added 11 points in the loss. With the win, Baylor moved to 39-1 all-time under Mulkey in December while the Lady Bears improved to 23-0 in the Ferrell Center in December under the seventh-year head coach. WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES Since her arrival in Waco, Florida transfer Bernice Mosby has transformed her body through her strength and conditioning workouts. In one year she has reduced her body fat by 4.6 percent, improved her one-minute sit-up test by 11 reps (62), her push-up test by nine and her chin-up test by nine as well. She had the greatest improvement on the team in upper body strength (17 pounds) going from ninth to third on the squad. The 6-0 forward has the team s second best power clean, up from seventh last season. On the mile run she had the slowest time of the returning players and improved by 16 seconds to 6:21 which is the team s fourth fastest clocking. NEW FACILITIES After winning the national championship in 2005, the Lady Bears entirely remodeled and enlarged their locker room. Construction was completed in October 2005 for the NBA-style locker room. Each player s locker area features its own video screen and is equipped with a combination DVD/VCR player. The locker area is equipped with computers and printers to allow student-athletes to work on their studies or check . In addition, the video classroom is a three-tiered theater area and is equipped with state-of-the-art video equipment and theater seating. On Sept. 8, 2006, Baylor s $7.9 million basketball practice center totalling nearly 43,000 square feet was dedicated. The Lt. Jack Whetsel Jr. Basketball Practice Facility includes two full-size practice courts, a 6,600-square foot full-service strength and conditioning center, office suites for the coaching staffs, an entry plaza, a VIP suite and a display corridor. Tied the team bench press record of 176 pounds set by Abiola Wabara... Had the greatest improvement in leg strength (+29 lbs.)... Jhasmin Player - Holds the current player power clean record (181 lbs.) and is No. 2 alltime... Has the second-best bench press alltime behind Angela Tisdale... Improved her mile time by 15 seconds. Danielle Wilson - Has a wing span of 82 1/4, only five inches smaller than BU men s player Mamadou Diene (gee-ehn) who is 7 0 tall. Haylee Abbe - Smashed the mile run time with a 5:32 mark, bettered the old mark of 6:09 set in 2003 by Jessika Stratton. 7 2007 SIGNEES Baylor signed two players to National Letters of Intent (NLI), head coach Kim Mulkey announced on Nov. 8, the first day of the early signing period. Inking with Baylor were guards Melissa Jones (Thornton, Colo.) and Kelli Griffin (Houston, Texas). Jones, a 5-11 guard, averaged 20.5 points and 10.1 rebounds as a junior and added 113 steals at Legacy High School in Broomfield, Colo. Jones is ranked No. 13 nationally by HoopGurlz.com and No. 36 on All Star Girls Report s national list. Griffin, a 5-8 Clear Brook High School standout, scored 14.5 points, grabbed 4.7 rebounds, dished out 4.7 assists and registered 3.8 steals as a junior. She is Texas Hoops top-ranked player in the class of She tore her ACL in May and is currently recovering from the injury. Griffin was recently named first-team All-Greater Houston by the Houston Chronicle.
