Playing in six of the first eight games (missing two with a knee injury), DeMarco Murray rushed 91 times for 428 yards (4.7 avg.) and three touchdowns. After rebounding from the knee injury, over the course of the next seven games, Murray rushed 126 times for 693 yards (5.5) and six touchdowns. He went from averaging 71.3 yards-per-game (first six) to 86.6 through the next seven. For his work through the second half of 2013, the third-year pro also earned his first trip to the Pro Bowl as an injury replacement for Frank Gore. 19 SHUTTING OUT EACH HALF Despite being behind 28-3 by halftime against San Francisco (9/7), the Dallas Cowboys defense responded in the second half by not allowing a single point in either the third or fourth quarters. It was the unit s first shutout of an opposing team s defense in the second half since against Buffalo (11/13/11). The last time a Cowboys defense had shutout an opponent s offense during either half in came in 2013 during the first half at Philadelphia (10/20) where the scoreless streak extended through the first three quarters. The defense also stiffened in the final two quarters, allowing only 119 total yards compared to the 200 total yards given up in the first half. The Cowboys defense continued their shutout streak into their next game at Tennessee (9/14), holding the Titans offense scoreless in the first two quarters. The defense also limited Tennessee to 68 total offensive yards in the first half, two first downs and did not allow a successful third-down conversion. Though Tennessee scored in the third quarter to break up the shutout, the defense continued to stifle the Titans offense on third downs, holding them to two-of-10 (20.0%) overall to finish the game. TAKE IT AWAY The Dallas Cowboys recorded their first two takeaways of the season at Tennessee (9/14), as both Barry Church and Rolando McClain intercepted Titans passer Jake Locker. Church s interception in the second quarter marked the first takeaway of the year, and the second of his career. McClain made an acrobatic snag of Locker s pass in the fourth quarter to register as the second of his career. The Cowboys defense finished the 2013 season with 28 takeaways, fifth for the club since Dallas Cowboys Year-by-Year Takeaways (since 2005) SACK ATTACK From Dallas racked up at least 35 sacks each season, but fell short in 2012, posting 34. The 2013 team finished with 34 once again, and since the 2006 season, Dallas has totaled 329 sacks - tied for third in the league over that span: NFL Team Sack Leaders - since 2006 Team Sacks Minnesota Vikings Pittsburgh Steelers Dallas Cowboys Miami Dolphins Philadelphia Eagles over the previous five seasons, Dallas single-season sack high was 42 in Helping that total were the four sacks the club had in the first half of the game at Arizona (12/4). It was the 11th time in team history the team had four-or-more first half sacks, and the first since having five against Baltimore (12/20/08). In 2014 the Dallas defense produced one sack against San Francisco (9/7) with Bruce Carter s takedown of Colin Kaepernick. The defense doubled their performance with two in its next game at Tennessee (9/14) as Rolando McClain gathered one and Henry Melton and Kyle Wilber split the other sack of Jake Locker. CHURCH IN SESSION Barry Church made his mark on the Cowboys defense in 2013, turning in a team-leading and career-best 147 tackles, bouncing back after missing the majority of the 2012 season after suffering a ruptured Achilles tendon three weeks into the season. Church posted eight games with 10-or-more tackles in most on the defense - including a career-high 17 at New orleans (11/10/13). Church s 147 tackles in 2013 were the third-most by a Cowboys safety, and the 11th most overall by any Cowboys defender, dating back to 1989: Most Tackles by a Cowboys Safety - Single Season Tackles Brock Marion, Darren Woodson, Barry Church, Darren Woodson, Darren Woodson, Darren Woodson, Darren Woodson, Roy Williams, Bill Bates, Darren Woodson, ROLANDO S NFL RETURN Rolando McClain, the former eighth overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft by the oakland Raiders, joined the Dallas Cowboys via trade from the Baltimore Ravens on July 1, In each of his first three seasons ( ) with the Raiders he compiled over 85+ tackles, finishing in the top-five amongst oakland s top tacklers each year. overall, he compiled 274 stops, 6.5 sacks, 11 tackles for loss and an interception in 41 games with 38 starts. Following his release by oakland on April 5, 2013, he signed a one-year contract with Baltimore on April 12, but retired from the NFL on May 15 and was out of football for the 2013 season. McClain was reinstated from the Reserve/Retired list on April 14, 2014, but abruptly retired once more on April 23. However, upon his trade to Dallas, he was reinstated and particpated in training camp and the preseason with the Cowboys where he finished fifth on the defense with 11 tackles and a forced fumble. Due to McClain s strong play in the preseason, he earned the starting role at middle linebacker for the 2014 season. In his first game action since his last game with oakland on Nov. 25, 2012, he started at middle linebacker for the Cowboys against San Francisco (9/7) and led the team with 12 tackles - tied for the second-highest tackle total of his career - and a quarterback hurry. He followed that up leading the team in tackles once more at Tennessee (9/14) with 10 stops while also adding a sack, tackle for loss, his second career interception and a pass breakup. Through two games, McClain is the Cowboys top tackler with 22 stops. LEADING PUNTER Chris Jones, a former 2011 undrafted free agent, has made his way with the Dallas Cowboys, securing the job as the team s punter in 2012 but a knee injury hampered his progress and eventually landed him on the Reserve/Injured list. He returned in 2013 for a career-year, playing in all 16 games for the first time to post career-highs in multiple categories. In 2014 he has gotten off to a hot start, as his gross punting average of 54.5 leads all punters in the National Football League, while his 45.7 net average is fourth in the league, third in the NFC, following the first two games of the season.
