Worthen Arena (11,500) A Look at the Cardinals Ball State returns to action Monday with a meeting against Longwood for the third straight season. The Cardinals defeated the Lancers in Muncie two years ago and did so again last year as part of Classic in Richmond, Kentucky. Ball State played 10 games in the first 30 days of the season before a break for final exams. The Cardinals have been off from competition since a Dec. 10 overtime win versus Eastern Kentucky. Sean Sellers scored a career-high 32 points against EKU, becoming the first Cardinal to surpass the 30-point mark in a game since Bo Calhoun at Toledo on Feb. 28, Sellers tied his career-high with seven 3-pointers, one shy of the school record set by Dennis Trammell against Marshall on Feb. 6, Sophomore center Trey Moses posted his second double-double of the season against EKU with a career-high 18 points and 14 rebounds. He has scored a career high in back-to-back games. Moses is averaging a double-double over the past seven games at 11.9 points and 11.1 rebounds per contest. Tayler Persons recorded a career-high five steals in the EKU game, marking the most by a Ball State player this season. The Cardinals 10 steals as a team matched the most in a game for the program over the past four seasons. Ball State has been outrebounded in only one of its 10 games (Nov. 27 at Valparaiso). The Cardinals are outrebounding their opponents by nearly six boards per game. Projected Starters (based on previous game) Pos. No. Name Cl. 4 Last Time Out MUNCIE, Ind. -- Sean Sellers scored a career-high 32 points, and the Ball State men s basketball team outlasted Eastern Kentucky in overtime at Worthen Arena. The back-and-forth contest featured 19 ties and 18 lead changes. Neither team led by more than four points after halftime until the final seconds of overtime. Tayler Persons driving lay-in with 47 seconds left in the extra period put Ball State ahead for good, and the Cardinals sealed the game at the foul line. Ball State head coach James Whitford was most impressed with the way his team performed despite being short-handed. The Cardinals (6-4) were without Tahjai Teague, who was working through the concussion protocol after taking a hit in practice. Francis Kiapway was again limited, while Franko House suffered through foul trouble before eventually fouling out. Those things combined resulted in five Ball State players seeing action for at least 37 of the game s 45 minutes. I was really proud of our team, and I felt that way long before the final whistle, Whitford said. I thought we really showed some resilience during the game. We had to deal with a lot of adversity. Despite that, we kept playing, we didn t get distracted, and we kept fighting. Guys really played the game the right way, and that s what allowed us to win. A pair of sophomores continued their impressive play as the Cardinals snapped a four-game winning streak for Eastern Kentucky (6-5). Persons scored 21 points and handed out nine assists, while center Trey Moses notched a career-high for the second straight game with 18 points to go with 14 rebounds. Sellers matched his career-best with seven 3-pointers, one shy of the school record, hitting 7 of 10 from beyond the arc and 10 of 14 overall. The importance of his shots was magnified because the Cardinals were limited on their play card by the injuries and foul trouble. It was a huge help, Whitford said. We had so many guys out of position tonight. I didn t feel like we were able to run much offense, and Sean was really able to stretch them out and score some big baskets that we needed. After leading much of the first half, Ball State found itself in a seven-point hole with 2:17 to play before halftime. But the Cardinals used a 9-0 run spanning the two halves to erase the gap, taking the lead again after five straight points from Sellers to open the second half. From there, the teams seemed to trade baskets virtually the rest of the way. Persons had a chance to put Ball State ahead with 4 seconds left in regulation but missed a pair of free throws. But that didn t seem to bother him in the overtime period. Persons, Sellers and Moses combined to score all 13 of the Cardinals points in the final five minutes. 5 Series History vs. Longwood All-Time: Ball State leads /28/14 H BS /21/15 N BS At Ball State: BSU leads 1-0 At Neutral Sites: BSU leads 1-0 Last Year vs. Longwood RICHMOND, Ky. -- Ryan Weber scored 17 points and Franko House added 14 as Ball State defeated Longwood in its second game at Classic. The Cardinals hit timely shots and got to the free throw line down the stretch to open up a game that was tied with six minutes to go. The team drained 24 of 28 free throws for the evening, including 9 for 10 from Weber and 7 for 7 from Jeremiah Davis. We talk a lot about playing to win, and that means you aren t hesitant down the stretch, Ball State coach James Whitford said. You make attacking plays and be the aggressor, and I thought out guys did that. Ball State opened up a 10-point lead midway through the second half only to see Longwood storm back to tie the game at 57. Kanayo Obi-Rapu hit some key 3-pointers during that stretch on his way to a team-high 21 points for the Lancers. But the Cardinals responded. Nate Wells found Weber for a 3, and House followed with a 3-point play as Ball State regained control. BSU then went 10 for 10 from the free throw line over the final four minutes to seal the win. Davis made four of those foul shots and had the ball in his hands a lot late. Wells played a season high 17 impactful minutes. Ball State went to a zone defense, and the fifth-year big man helped force Longwood away from the basket. Longwood center Lotanna Nwogbo, who went for 27 points and 15 rebounds a night earlier against South Carolina State, managed just four points and five boards. I thought Nate Wells was unbelievable, Whitford said. We were having a tough time defending their dribble penetration, and it was putting us in foul trouble. That s why we went zone. We put Nate in there, and he really clogged up the paint in that zone. I thought he made a big difference in the game. All 10 Cardinals who played in the game scored. Davis finished with nine points, while Bo Calhoun and Francis Kiapway scored eight. House went 6 for 7 from the floor for his 14 points. Franko does a lot for us, Whitford said. He shoots a good percentage, he s a good defender, he s a team guy, and he takes care of the basketball. Ryan Weber had another solid game. It was a great team effort tonight. Ball State finished last season and shared the Mid-American Conference West Division championship with a 10-8 league mark. The Cardinals earned a berth in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT) and reached the quarterfinals. It marked Ball State s first 20-win season and first postseason appearance in 14 years. Coming on the heels of a seven-win campaign in , the Cardinals turnaround ranked as the fourth-largest of any team in the nation. Ball State ended the season at No. 155 in the Ken Pomeroy rankings, marking its best finish since the campaign. The Cardinals, who were picked last in the MAC preseason poll, tied the school record for games played in a season with 35. Ball State led the MAC in scoring defense (66.8) while ranking second in the league and 40th nationally in field goal percentage defense (.405). Offensively, Ball State hit the second-most 3-pointers in school history (305) and finished as the MAC s top assist team during league play at 14.7 per game. Whitford came incredibly close to winning MAC Coach of the Year honors, finishing second to Akron s Keith Dambrot. He tied Dambrot with 14 first-place votes but ended up one point behind the Akron coach in total points ( ). Whitford laid the foundation for the future at Ball State during his first two years, installing his system and ramping up the Cardinals recruiting efforts. His first two Ball State teams were heavy on youth, with the squad ranking among the 25 youngest in the country. Both teams featured the Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year, including Sean Sellers in Whitford signed a 2014 freshman class that included three state champions, a prep school national runner up and, for the first time at Ball State since 1996, two Indiana All-Stars. Scout.com recruiting analyst Brian Snow said of the group, Ball State s 2014 recruiting class is one of the best mid-major recruiting classes in the country. The future is bright in Muncie. Whitford has now recruited five former Indiana All-Stars to Ball State -- Sellers, Jeremie Tyler, Tahjai Teague, Tayler Persons and Kyle Mallers. In the decade prior to Whitford s arrival, the Cardinals signed a total of three Indiana All-Stars. The season will mark the first time the Ball State roster has ever included five Indiana All-Stars. Whitford was introduced as the 19th men s basketball coach in Ball State history on April 10, In his career as an assistant coach at Arizona, Xavier and Miami University, his teams posted an overall record of , reached the NCAA tournament 10 times and played in the postseason 13 times.
