Coleman Coliseum (15,383) A Look at the Cardinals Ball State plays the first of four straight games away from home Friday when it visits Southeastern Conference opponent Alabama for the first-ever meeting between the teams. The Cardinals are in the midst of a busy stretch that will see them play seven times in the season s first 19 days. Friday s game is the second of four games Ball State will play as part of the Men Who Speak Up Main Event. The Cardinals season-opening win at Saint Louis was also part of the event. Following the Alabama game, BSU will travel to Las Vegas for the remaining two games versus Coppin State (Nov. 21) and Southern Utah (Nov. 23) at the MGM Grand. The Cardinals suffered their first loss with an overtime defeat Tuesday against long-time rival Indiana State. The loss dropped BSU 12 spots to No. 123 in the Ken Pomeroy ratings. The Cardinals reached as high as No. 127 last season and finished at No. 155 for their best year-end rating since Ball State features two of the top three scorers in the Mid-American Conference through two games in sophomore point guard Tayler Persons (23.5 ppg, 2nd) and senior forward Franko House (22.0 ppg, 3rd). Both have topped the 20-point mark in both games. Persons is seeing his first action for the Cardinals after sitting out last season as a transfer from Northern Kentucky. House, a preseason All-MAC selection, matched his career-high with 23 points in the opener at Saint Louis and set a career-high with 14 rebounds Tuesday against Indiana State. He is averaging a double-double through two games (22.0 ppg, 10.0 rpg) and is 41 points away from becoming the 29th 1,000-point scorer in program history. 4 Last Time Out MUNCIE, Ind. -- Tayler Persons and Franko House had big nights for the second game in a row, but Indiana State locked in on Ball State s other weapons well enough to emerge Tuesday night with an victory in overtime. Persons (26 points) and House (21) topped the 20-point mark for the second straight game. They combined to shoot 16 of 31 from the floor, but Indiana State (1-1) forced the rest of the Cardinals into a tough night. Ball State (1-1) finished the game shooting 38 percent as a team. I want to give Indiana State great credit, Ball State coach James Whitford said. I thought they played a really good game and made some big plays down the stretch. I thought they did a terrific job on Sean (Sellers), Francis (Kiapway) and Ryan (Weber), and I thought that really hurt us. Ball State got off to a slow start with 11 turnovers in the opening half as the Cardinals struggled to find some flow offensively. After recording 21 assists on 30 made baskets in the season-opening win at Saint Louis, BSU managed just 10 assists Tuesday. A lot of it is the way Indiana State plays, Whitford said. They deny passes everywhere. What they force you to do is make plays. It wasn t going to be a game like the last one. The Cardinals cut that turnover total down to four over the final 25 minutes and started to get better shots. They just weren t making them. Ball State shot 34 percent in the second half and made only 4 of 17 attempts from 3-point range for the night. But the Cardinals managed to hang around, partly because of their work on the glass with 16 offensive rebounds. They trailed by as many as eight in the second half but came back to grab a lead on a lay-in from House with 2:01 to play. Brandon Murphy gave Indiana State a lead with 15 seconds left in regulation, but Persons drew a foul on the other end and hit both free throws to force overtime. But the Cardinals could not ride that momentum. Indiana State scored on all but one of its possessions in the extra period, going 4 for 4 from the floor and 7 for 8 from the foul line in the process. The dagger was a 3-pointer from Matt Van Scyoc that bounced high off the rim and fell through to put the Sycamores up with 1:32 to play. From there, Ball State couldn t cut the margin to any fewer than four points. Brenton Scott led Indiana State with 25 points, while Van Scyoc added 14. Point guard Everett Clemons finished one assist shy of a triple-double with 11 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists. The Sycamores attempted 12 fewer shots than Ball State but made one more. Trey Moses gave the Cardinals a third doublefigure scorer with 10 points on 5-of-10 shooting. House led Ball State on the boards with a careerhigh 14 rebounds for a double-double. 11 JAMES WHITFORD Head Coach (Fourth Season) The Whitford File COACHING HISTORY April 2013-Present Head Coach Ball State University Associate Head Coach Arizona Assistant Coach Arizona Assistant Coach Xavier Assistant Coach Miami University Administrative Assistant Miami University ** career record as an assistant coach 10 NCAA Tournaments & 13 total postseason appearances EDUCATION Wisconsin, 1994 Bachelor s in Political Science Miami University, 1996 Master s in Sports Studies James Whitford enters his fourth season as the Ball State men s basketball head coach in , leading a resurgence in the Cardinals program. Ball State finished last season and shared the Mid-American Conference West Division championship with a 10-8 league mark. The Cardinals earned a berth in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT) and reached the quarterfinals. It marked Ball State s first 20-win season and first postseason appearance in 14 years. Coming on the heels of a seven-win campaign in , the Cardinals turnaround ranked as the fourth-largest of any team in the nation. Ball State ended the season at No. 155 in the Ken Pomeroy rankings, marking its best finish since the campaign. The Cardinals, who were picked last in the MAC preseason poll, tied the school record for games played in a season with 35. Ball State led the MAC in scoring defense (66.8) while ranking second in the league and 40th nationally in field goal percentage defense (.405). Offensively, Ball State hit the second-most 3-pointers in school history (305) and finished as the MAC s top assist team during league play at 14.7 per game. Whitford came incredibly close to winning MAC Coach of the Year honors, finishing second to Akron s Keith Dambrot. He tied Dambrot with 14 first-place votes but ended up one point behind the Akron coach in total points ( ). Whitford laid the foundation for the future at Ball State during his first two years, installing his system and ramping up the Cardinals recruiting efforts. His first two Ball State teams were heavy on youth, with the squad ranking among the 25 youngest in the country. Both teams featured the Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year, including Sean Sellers in Whitford signed a 2014 freshman class that included three state champions, a prep school national runner up and, for the first time at Ball State since 1996, two Indiana All-Stars. Scout.com recruiting analyst Brian Snow said of the group, Ball State s 2014 recruiting class is one of the best mid-major recruiting classes in the country. The future is bright in Muncie. Whitford has now recruited five former Indiana All-Stars to Ball State -- Sellers, Jeremie Tyler, Tahjai Teague, Tayler Persons and Kyle Mallers. In the decade prior to Whitford s arrival, the Cardinals signed a total of three Indiana All-Stars. The season will mark the first time the Ball State roster has ever included five Indiana All-Stars. Whitford was introduced as the 19th men s basketball coach in Ball State history on April 10, In his career as an assistant coach at Arizona, Xavier and Miami University, his teams posted an overall record of , reached the NCAA tournament 10 times and played in the postseason 13 times. ON THE BENCH Jason Grunkemeyer Associate Head Coach Fourth Season Miami University, 2001 A former standout at Miami, Grunkemeyer was previously an assistant coach with the RedHawks and at Saint Louis. He played at Miami when James Whitford was an assistant coach on the staff and helped the RedHawks to the Sweet 16 in He later served five years on the Miami staff under Charlie Coles. Brian Thornton Assistant Coach Third Season Xavier, 2005 A former Academic All-American at Xavier, Thornton joined the Ball State staff in May 2014 after two years at Winthrop.
