3 Scouting Ohio Ohio enters the game at 5-10 overall and 0-4 in MAC play. The Bobcats are coming off a loss at Kent State and also have conference losses to Northern Illinois, Bowling Green and Toledo. Maurice Ndour leads Ohio and ranks among the top 10 in the MAC in scoring (14.9 ppg, 6th), rebounds (8.6 rpg, 2nd) and blocks (2.2 bpg, 2nd). Javarez Willis (14.2 ppg) and Ryan Taylor (10.1 ppg) also average double figures for the Bobcats. The Series with Ohio Ball State trails in the all-time series with Ohio. The Cardinals hold an edge on the Bobcats in games played in Muncie, including a 10-5 advantage inside Worthen Arena. Ohio has won five straight in the series, including two wins last year in Athens, Ohio. The Bobcats defeated the Cardinals in the regular season and in the opening round of the MAC Tournament. Ball State s last win over Ohio came in the 2011 MAC Tournament. Complete series history available on page 8. Last Time Out Bowling Green used a big second half to hand Ball State a loss Saturday. The Cardinals led by four at halftime but were outscored by a margin after the break. Zavier Turner led Ball State with 14 points. Matt Kamieniecki posted his fourth straight doublefigure rebounding game with 11, while Bo Calhoun grabbed a career-high 10 boards. A Sean Sellers 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer sent the Cardinals to the locker room with a advantage. Mental and physical fatigue then seemed to set in for the Cardinals, which were playing the second leg of back-to-back road games and coming off a double-overtime contest. It was a game nearly six minutes into the second half before Bowling Green seized control with an 18-3 run. The Cardinals suffered from some self-inflicted wounds in the second half with 10 turnovers leading to 13 Bowling Green points. After scoring only two points in the first half, Bowling Green s top scorer Richaun Holmes got it going for nine in the second half. Zack Denny scored 10 of his game-high 17 points for the Falcons after the break. Ball State finished the game shooting 32.7 percent from the floor. The Cardinals knocked down seven 3-pointers but were outscored at the foul line Next Up Ball State will remain at home to host Kent State on Saturday in the first game of a men s and women s doubleheader. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. at Worthen Arena. The women s team will play Ohio at 4:30. 4 Inside the Numbers Ball State currently checks in at No. 189 in the Ken Pomeroy ratings. Only once in the past decade have the Cardinals finished a season with a better Pomeroy ranking than they currently have (166 in ). Pomeroy rates the Mid-American Conference as the 11th-best conference in the country. The last time the league finished a season rated that highly was (11th). Quality Wins/Losses Ball State s two MAC wins came against teams who were rated in the RPI top 100 at the time -- Eastern Michigan (89) and Central Michigan (88). The Cardinals eight losses have come against teams that own a combined record of (.685). Four of those losses are to teams currently in the top 80 of the Pomeroy rankings -- Utah (14-3, No. 6), San Diego State (14-4, No. 32), Valparaiso (17-3, No. 69) and Bowling Green (11-4, No. 79). Signs of Progress In year two under head coach James Whitford, Ball State has already surpassed its overall win total from last season (five) with seven victories and matched its conference win total from last year (two). The Cardinals picked up overall win No. 7 and league win No. 2 with their Jan. 10 victory over Central Michigan. Last year, the team did not record its second MAC win until March 1. Ball State also has six wins this season over NCAA Division I opponents after having only three such wins last year. Kammy Being Kammy Senior post player Matt Kamieniecki has always been known for his tenacity attacking the glass, and he has been especially productive through the first four conference games. His 12.0 rebounds per game average in conference play is the best of any MAC player. Kamieniecki grabbed 14 rebounds at Eastern Michigan, 10 against Central Michigan, 13 at Western Michigan and 11 at Bowling Green. For the full season, he ranks fifth nationally in defensive rebounding percentage at Defending and Rebounding Ball State s biggest strengths in conference play have come on the defensive end of the floor and on the glass. The Cardinals are grabbing more rebounds per game (41.5) than any team in MAC play and own the second-best rebounding margin (+5.8). Ball State s field goal percentage defense (.398) ranks third in league play, while its 3-point field goal percentage (.301) ranks second. Davis Finding His Footing Junior guard Jeremiah Davis has provided a veteran presence to the Ball State back court since making his debut five games ago after missing the opening 10 games to injury Davis was injured in practice during the last week of October and missed nine weeks. A redshirt junior, he spent two and a half years at Cincinnati before transferring to Ball State in January. He was granted eligibility by the NCAA to play the full season but wound up missing the first semester because of his injury. Sellers in the Rankings Only a freshman, Sean Sellers is showing himself to be one of the top shooters in the MAC. Sellers ranks second in free throw percentage (.852) while also ranking fifth in the league in 3-point percentage (.460). He is the top scoring freshman in the MAC at 12.2 points per game. Sharing the Ball Ball State has recorded assists on 58.9 percent of its baskets this season (202 of 343). That percentage is the highest of any MAC team. Western Michigan is next at 56.6 percent. In nine of their 15 games, the Cardinals have recorded assists on at least 55 percent of their baskets. Their highest single-game percentage (77.8 percent) came with 14 assists on 18 made field goals in the win over Longwood. The Cardinals have nine players with double-digit assist totals this season, led by sophomore point guard Zavier Turner with 50 (3.8 per game). BALL STATE TRADITION 1st NCAA Sweet 16 Ball State was the first MAC team to reach the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament after the field expanded to 64 teams. The Cardinals, who reached that round in 1990, are one of five MAC teams to make the Sweet 16 since then. 6 MAC Regular Season Championships (since 1980) Only Miami (eight) has more MAC regular season titles since MAC Tournament Championships The most of any team in league history. Ohio is next with six, followed by Kent State with five. 7 NCAA Tournament Appearances The second-most of any team in the MAC since 1980 (Miami has eight). 10 All-America Selections The most of any program in MAC history. 29 Ball State s 29 wins in still rank as the second-most in a single season in MAC history. The Cardinals feature the 25th-youngest roster in the country according to Ken Pomeroy s experience metric, which places Ball State at No. 329 out of 351 teams. The Cardinals feature a young roster with a combined seven freshmen and sophomores. Last season freshmen accounted for more than 45 percent of the team s minutes and more than 40 percent of its scoring. Shooting the 3 The Cardinals have knocked down double-digit 3-pointers in five games already this season. Last year s team reached 10 treys in a game three times all season. The Cardinals 14 treys against Grambling State were the most for the program since the 2006 season and two shy of the school record. Kamieniecki Healthy and Producing Matt Kamieniecki has provided a lift for the Cardinals this season, returning after missing the entire season with a wrist injury. Kamieniecki has been hampered by injuries throughout his career but is healthy this season and putting up the best numbers of his career. His five double-doubles this season rank third in the MAC. Here is a look at his statistics this year compared to his first three seasons... Those two are joined in the Cardinals freshman class by Francis Kiapway, Rashaun Richardson and walk-on Tye Wilburn. Kiapway made his debut at IUPUI, while Richardson will redshirt and Wilburn is recovering from injury. Tyler and Richardson teamed together to win a class 4A state championship at Indianapolis Arsenal Tech last year, defeating Wilburn s Lake Central team in the finals. Sellers led Greensburg High School to a 3A state title, while Kiapway was on a prep school national runner-up team at St. Thomas More in Connecticut. Those five players led teams that combined for a record last season (28-1 for Sellers, 27-2 for Tyler and Richardson, 22-4 for Wilburn and 28-8 for Kiapway). More Newcomers Ball State also brought in a pair of veterans in junior college All-American Bik Gill and Youngstown State transfer Ryan Weber. Gill is playing for the Cardinals this season after earning third-team All-America honors last year, leading Owens Community College in Toledo, Ohio, to a 25-6 record. Weber, Youngstown State s second-leading scorer at 12.2 points per game last year, will practice with the team but sit out from competition because of NCAA transfer rules. He will then have two years of eligibility remaining. Whitford Era Enters Second Season James Whitford, the 19th head coach in program history, is in his second season as Ball State s head coach. Whitford came to Ball State after serving the previous eight years on Sean Miller s staff at Xavier and Arizona, including the final two as Arizona s associate head coach. He also had previous MAC experience with 11 years at Miami University under head coaches Herb Sendek and Charlie Coles.
