4 Season Outlook Blazers Ready For Year Two Under Haase When the final buzzer sounded at the conclusion of s game against Southern Miss at the 2013 Conference USA Tournament, the Blazers had just wrapped up a strong finish under first-year head coach Jerod Haase. won six of its final nine C-USA regular season games and knocked off SMU, 53-52, in the first round of the conference tournament. The Blazers won their final three road league games and went on a streak of four-straight wins from Feb. 16 through March 2. Even with all the progress that had been made under Haase in Year One, the Blazers head coach knew there was still plenty of work to be done. So, Haase and his staff hit the ground running, going after some of the top recruits to fill spots on the roster. The Blazers did more than just fill a few holes on the roster. The coaching staff landed the 18th-ranked recruiting class in the nation, bringing in seven talented newcomers guard Denzell Watts, guard Thaddeus Rideau, guard Chad Frazier, forward Tosin Mehinti, guard Tyler Madison, forward C.J. Washington, and Virginia Tech transfer Robert Brown to the Blazers program. Brown will sit out the season due to NCAA transfer rules, but Haase expects this year s class to make an immediate impact. We are thrilled about the class we have this year, said Haase. We have players with great character and these players will be able to play some big-time basketball. We have a lot of versatility with most of these players being able to play multiple positions. We can plug in a lot of different alignments, and they will complement what we already have in our program. FIU on Feb. 6 and will play against Charlotte, who will be joining the league once again, on Feb. 22. Conference USA has a lot of depth and will present some challenges for us this year as we begin the season, Haase said. We look forward to a playing a lot of good teams and are eager to get started. This year we have a new flavor to Conference USA with a lot of new teams joining the league. I think as a whole it will only add to the great tradition of C-USA basketball and the success we have had in the past. opens the season on Nov. 3 when the Blazers host Milligan (Tenn.) College in an exhibition game. s first regular season game is at home against Columbus State on Nov. 8. In addition to the seven newcomers, welcomes back its top four leading scorers from last season, including second-team All-Conference USA selection Rod Rucker. Rucker, who averaged 14.5 points per game a year ago, is joined by guard/forward Jordan Swing (14.0 ppg), forward Fahro Alihodzic (9.7 ppg), and guard Robert Williams (8.5 ppg). Also returning for the Blazers is senior forward Preston Purifoy, who averaged 7.7 points per game and was the team s best free throw shooter with an 88.8 percent (71-of-80) mark from the line. We have an excellent group of veterans returning who will each give us some valuable experience, Haase said. They have all been in the system for a year now, which has given them time to learn how we do things and how we operate. Senior Fahro Alihodzic s 13-man roster will face a tough schedule in , with six possible games against teams that competed in the 2013 NCAA Tournament. s premier matchup comes Dec. 1 as the Blazers welcome perennial power North Carolina to Bartow Arena. Other games include a home contest against Rutgers on Nov. 11 and a road trip to LSU on Dec. 21. The Blazers will also compete in the Charleston Classic (Nov ), a tournament field that features Clemson, Davidson, Georgia, Nebraska, New Mexico, Temple and UMass. We were looking for a big-time schedule and a home schedule that has some big games that the fans can get excited about. Haase said. We also looked for a balance with both home and road games, and a balance with a variety of opponents and I think we ve achieved that. Needless to say we have some big-time names and some big-time competition with North Carolina and Rutgers, the Charleston Classic and on the road at LSU. So there are a lot of good names that people are going to recognize and I think that will be great for basketball. Once the Blazers venture into Conference USA action on Jan. 11 at Middle Tennessee, will face a new-look league and a conference schedule that features nine games against new members of C-USA.
