Robert Ehsan begins his first season as head coach of the UAB men s basketball program and his fifth season on the staff after serving as associate head coach under former Blazer head coach Jerod Haase. Ehsan played a key role in the resurgence of UAB basketball, as he helped the Blazers capture the 2015 Conference USA Tournament championship and an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. UAB would go on to make shockwaves in the second round of the 2015 NCAA Tournament, as the 14th-seeded Blazers knocked off No. 3 seed Iowa State, 60-59, to advance to the NCAA Round of 32. Ehsan and UAB enjoyed more success the following season when the Blazers won the 2016 Conference USA Championship with a 16-2 record inside the league. He was also involved in the recruitment of Brown, who was originally recruited by Ehsan at Virginia Tech before transferring to rejoin him at UAB, as well as UAB standout Lee and others. Ehsan played four seasons at the University of California, Davis. He started his last two seasons for the Aggies and was the team captain in his senior year. Ehsan finished 23rd in the nation in free-throw percentage as a junior for UC Davis, which was in a transition period while moving from NCAA Division II to Division I. At UC Davis, Ehsan received the Gordon S. Baranco Award, symbolizing exceptional leadership, unselfishness, work ethic and commitment to the team. Ehsan earned a bachelor s degree in economics at UC Davis and completed a Master of Business Administration degree at Maryland. Ehsan is a native of Sacramento, Calif., and is married to the former Lindsey Rattray. They have one daughter, Katelyn, and a son, Davis. WHAT THEY RE SAYING ABOUT ROBERT EHSAN: Robert s ability to motivate players, gain their trust and develop them on and off the court are strengths he has developed throughout his career. I have no doubt Rob will be an outstanding coach at UAB. - GARY WILLIAMS This is not a home run hire for UAB. It is a grand slam. I am proud of coach Ehsan, and I believe there are some great days ahead for UAB basketball. - JEROD HAASE I know for a fact that Gary Williams considers Robert Ehsan one of the best assistants he ever had at Maryland. UAB made a really smart hire. - SCOTT VAN PELT Coach Ehsan was a great supporter and motivator for me during my college career at Maryland. UAB also returns 2016 Conference USA Sixth Man of the Year Dirk Williams. Overall, the Blazers return 82.3 percent of their scoring and 92.8 percent of their rebounding. UAB INKS THREE Blazer head coach Robert Ehsan signed his first three recruits of his career earlier this month when Zack Bryant (Hastings, Fla.), Makhtar Gueye (Dakar, Senegal) and Luis Hurtado (Weston, Fla.) signed their National Letters of Intent to play at UAB. Bryant averaged 19.9 points, 5.7 rebounds and 4.1 assists last season at Providence School in Jacksonville. He also broke current Duke guard and Providence School alumni Grayson Allen s single-season scoring record. Gueye plays at Aspire Basketball Academy in Arizona and averages 19.8 points and 9.5 rebounds this season. Hurtado is a three-star recruit according to 247Sports. BLOCK CITY UAB transformed Birmingham into Blockingham last season by finishing the year ranked second in the NCAA with 6.1 blocked shots per game. UAB ended the season with 202 blocks to record the sixth-most in the country. In addition, the 202 rejections were the highest single-season total in school history, surpassing the previous record of 187 set during the season. Individually, junior William Lee finished the season with 95 blocks and ranked eighth in the NCAA with 2.9 per game. Lee, who blocked at least one shot in all but one game, was named the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year while earning a spot on the All-Defensive Team as well. Lee s 95 rejections rank as the second-most in school history for a single season. Only Alan Ogg had more single-season blocks than Lee when he tallied 129 during the season. ONE FOR THE RECORD BOOKS UAB turned in one of its greatest seasons in school history in en route to its first Conference USA regular-season championship since season. The Blazers finished the season with a 26-7 overall record and a 16-2 mark in league play. During the season, UAB set school records for overall wins, Conference USA wins, consecutive wins (14) and road wins (10). The Blazers would go on to earn a bid to the NIT to mark the 12th time in school history UAB has participated in the postseason tournament. ALL-CONFERENCE QUARTET UAB made school history at the end of the regular season when four of its student-athletes were named All-Conference USA. Blazers Robert Brown (first team), Chris Cokley (second team), William Lee (third team) and Nick Norton (third team) became the first UAB quartet to be named All-Conference USA in the same season, breaking the previous school record of three selections set during the season. The All-Conference USA teams were selected by a vote of the league s coaches and a select panel of media representatives. NORTON LENDS A HELPING HAND UAB junior guard Nick Norton established himself as one of the top point guards in the nation through his first two years in a Blazer uniform. In fact, Norton led Conference USA and ranked 18th in the NCAA with a 3.0 assist/turnover ratio. Norton also stood third in the league in steals (1.6 spg) and fifth in assists (5.1 apg). The Bloomington, Ill., native enters his junior season with 294 career assists and needs only 35 more helpers to move into 10th place on UAB s all-time list. Last season, Norton finished with 162 assists to record the 11th-most in a single season in school history. SIX SHOOTER UAB sharp shooter Dirk Williams came off the bench last season to shoot 48.2 percent from the field, 38.4 percent from three-point range and 89.8 percent from the free throw line while averaging 9.3 points per game. For his efforts, Williams was selected as the 2016 Conference USA Sixth Man of the Year, making it two straight years in which a Blazer has won the award. Forward Chris Cokley won the award in 2015 as a freshman. In addition, Williams helped UAB to a 14-1 record when he scored in double figures. TRIPLES AND DIMES UAB finished the season with one of its best seasons in school history in total three-pointers made and total assists. The Blazers sunk 250 three-pointers last season for the second-most in school history for a single season. UAB averaged 7.6 triples per game. 11 BOX SCORES Game #4 November 21, 2016 No. 5 Kansas 83, UAB 63 Josh Jackson has been huddling with the Kansas coaching staff since the start of the season, and the message has been the same: If you quit fouling so much, you would say on the floor more. Jackson poured in 22 points, while backcourt mates Frank Mason and Devonte Graham helped carry the load as fifth-ranked Kansas beat UAB in the semifinals of the CBE Classic. Mason finished with 20 points and Graham had 16 for the Jayhawks (3-1), who advanced to play Georgia. Kansas raced to a big early lead, weathered several runs by UAB, then relied on their backcourt of Jackson, Mason and Graham to pull away from the Blazers down the stretch. Dirk Williams led the Blazers (2-2) with 13 points. Tyler Madison had 12. The Blazers got off to what looked like it would be a catastrophic start, turning the ball over seven times and missing their first 11 field-goal attempts. Their only points over the first 10 minutes came on foul shots, and by the time they finally hit the Jayhawks led The Blazers took advantage with a run of their own. They ripped off a 17-2 run over the next 6 minutes as the Jayhawks missed seven straight shots of their own, and they quieted a partisan crowd by getting within late in the half. Graham hit a 3-pointer with 5 seconds to go, but UAB went coast-to-coast for a buzzer-beating basket to deflate the Jayhawks. The teams resumed trading runs early in the second half before the Jayhawks began pulling, and four 3-pointers by Svi Mykhailiuk -- who finished with 15 points -- helped put the game out of reach. Due to scheduling conflicts, the 15th-ranked Gaels got an early season look at the venue, and earned a victory over UAB. Jock Landale scored 20 points to lead No. 15 St. Mary s (5-0). He was 9 of 11 from the field. In doing a much better job of not getting beat off the dribble, something Bennett was looking for in the Gaels stopover in Las Vegas, they did a good job of limiting UAB s shot selection at key moments. The defensive stops allowed St. Mary s to go on significant runs to keep the Blazers well behind. The Gaels outscored UAB during a 14-minute stretch in the first half to open their largest lead of the game, The Blazers wouldn t go away, however, as they came out of the locker room and used a 16-7 run to cut the lead to seven, at with 14:33 left. But the Gaels used a 13-3 run of their own, ignited by three consecutive 3-pointers, to push the lead back to double digits, at with 9:29 remaining.
