1 CARDINAL CONNECTION Monday, January 30, 2017 EVENTS TODAY CLAY TARGET MEETING There will be an informational meeting for all student in grades 7-12 interested in participating on the AAHS Clay Target team this spring. The meeting will be held Monday, January 30 th at 6:30pm in the AAHS Commons. RESULTS FROM THE WEEKEND BOYS BASKETBALL JV Alexandria 73 Bemidji 59 The JV Boys Basketball Team scored a team high 73 points to win at home against a good Bemidji team. The game started out evenly with both teams executing and shooting the ball well. The Cardinals were the first team to put a string of stops together with scores on the other end to take a lead at the half (34-26). In the second half the Cards played some of their best team basketball of the year to build a solid lead. The run was sparked by defensive pressure and great offensive execution in the half court. The Cards were able to fend off one more run by the Lumberjacks to keep them at bay and seal the win. GIRLS BASKETBALL VARSITY Alexandria 63 Bemidji 42 The Lady Cards hosted the Jacks in a Section game on Lace up against cancer night and picked up a solid Section win. The Cards cranked up the heat from the opening tip cranking the heat up on defense with stubborn defense and rotations, hitting the boards and running the court. The Cards led at the half and Bemidji could never recover as we defended tough and pushed the pace to cruise to a solid TEAM victory. It was a night where we honored Bob Hatlestad for his courageous fight against cancer and his unwavering positive mindset which inspires us all so much. The entire Cardinal team enjoyed playing time in the second half and our team chemistry, attitude and support of one another continues to draw so many positive comments from fans and parents. Scoring for the team was led by Kayla Feldhake and KIKI Miller, who each logged an impressive double /double with 17 points and 10 rebounds each. Kendall Kohler joined them in double figures with 15. Maggie Slagle and The Emma's... Ziegler and Schmidt each contributed 4, while Kelby Olson- Rodel added 2. Rebounds were controlled by Kiki and Kayla yanking down 10 each, while Ken Ken Ko grabbed 5 and Zig snared 4. Kiki Miller dished out 4 assists while Kendall Kohler and Kelby O-R dished out 3 each. Steals were pounced on by Kendall Kohler and Kiki Miller with 5 each. The win ups the Cards to 16-2 overall and 10-0 in the CLC. The Lady Cards host the Otters on Tuesday night. Top 20 Thinkers and Teams understand the concept of "One day at a time"... it's a Journey not instant gratification. Bottom 80 Thinkers and Teams are not in this for TEAM... they want instant affirmations and see no value into locking into team goals that directory effect The Journey. GIRLS BASKETBALL JV Alexandria 55 Bemidji 54 Saturday the Girls and Boys Basketball teams hosted the Bemidji Lumberjacks in our Lace Up For Life event. The JV Girls Basketball team faced a talented Bemidji JV team who came to Alexandria with a 16-1
2 record on the year. The first half was back and forth while both teams were playing really well and feeling each other out. Kaye Paschka did a great job of being aggressive in the first half and created several shots for herself and her teammates. At the half the Cards would hold a lead. The second half was close as well as Bemidji kept answering Alexandria with several three pointers. Alexandria was able to provide their own three point shooting however as Matie Wirtjes and Emily Aker combined for a total of 5 three point field goals. Alexandria played some great team basketball and were able to work together to beat Bemidji s aggressive defense and in the half court the Cards were able to take advantage of their height inside as they found Emily Jones on several baskets. The last minute of the game was a nail biter for the fans as they saw Ella Grove score under the basket to give the Cards a lead with just under 40 seconds to play. A defensive stop by the Cards and a Bemidji foul would send Alex to the free throw line with 18 seconds to play. Despite a poor shooting night from the charity stripe for the Cards, Matie Wirtjes came up to the line and knocked down both free throws when they counted most giving the Cards a lead. Bemidji again would come down and hit a three pointer in the next possession cutting the Cards lead to 1. Alexandria without any timeouts would get the ball inbounded and loose the handle around half court. A scramble for the ball would find the ball in Taylor Partington s hands as she dribbled down the court towards the Cards basket as the clock expired. In the end Alexandria was able to pull away with an exciting victory over a very good Bemidji team. GIRLS BASKETBALL 9 TH GRADE Alexandria 48 Bemidji 38 It was a big Saturday for Alexandria basketball as it was, Lace up for Life night. It was an awesome night day/night of basketball with major support of cancer awareness. It was very well done by the high school students and those who were involved. Big shout out to all of them! During the game, the mighty Lumberjacks came to play. It was back and forward during the first half which was a tight game. The game would be tight the rest of the way. However, the Cards would keep chopping away at the Lumberjacks until they tipped and crashed to the ground. I guess it answers the age old question, because there was definitely a sound when they fell. That being said, scoring was led by Summer Gerhardt, Christina Palmer, Mia McGrane, Camille Hegstad, and Sidney Drew. What really helped seal the game was the play from the young ladies coming off the bench while the others caught their breath. It s so great to have a whole team that can play great defense. It gets the girls back on the winning side and brings them to 18-1 on the season. BOYS HOCKEY VARSITY Alexandria 3 Bemidji 2 The Alexandria boys varsity hockey team hosted the Bemidji Lumberjacks on Saturday afternoon at the Runestone Community Center. The Lumberjacks are always a good test with skill and physical play. And we need to get back on track playing some good hockey. A fast paced 1 st period between the 2 teams led the way with the Cards getting the only goal of the game. Sr. Derek Berning took a pass from Jr Jack Powell to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead after 1 period of play. Bemidji tied the game up 6 minutes into the second period on a 2 on 1 odd man rush. But the Cards answered back with a goal from Jr Derek Dropik. Joe Bigger and Ben Doherty both had Apples on the goal. 3 penalties by the Cardinals was way too many in the second period but the penalty kill has been very good this season. 2-1 Cardinals after 2 periods of play. It didn t take Bemidji long to tie the score up a 2 in the 3 rd period, 1 minute and 34 seconds into the 3 rd period to be exact. Another fast-paced physical period with good scoring chances but no scoring until 1 minute and 51 seconds left in the game. Sr. Derek Berning got his second goal of the game with the helper going to Sr. Micah Christianson. A furious 1 minute and 51 seconds, 1 goal post was hit by Bemidji but the Cardinals held on to win 3-2. The Cardinals have only one game this week against Brainerd at the RCC on Thursday night. Final score Saturday afternoon Alexandria 3 Bemidji 2. GIRLS HOCKEY VARSITY
3 Alexandria 3 Bemidji 2 Senior night had snuck up on us already this past Saturday and the Lady Cards were able to come out with a win for our seniors. The cards looked to come out and play an all around better game than previous games. Some great scoring chances, passing plays, and smart hockey was shown on and off throughout the game. Scoring for the cards were Josie Minnerath, Calley Richardson, and senior Megan Pesta. Getting assists were Calley Richardson, Kristin Trosvig, McKenna Ellingson and Olivia Kopp. The cards out-shot the lumberjacks and senior Madi Gay getting the win between the pipes. Would like to thank all our seniors; McKenzie Revering, Jade Bollman, Sam Charles, Ashten Oberg, Megan Pesta, April Jost, Sarah Finley, and Madi Gay. Thank you for being a special group of young ladies and for leading our Cardinal Hockey family in style. WE LOVE YOU. GIRLS HOCKEY JV Alexandria 0 Thief River Falls 3 On Friday the Lady Cardinals JV hockey team took on Thief River Falls. Our team came out a little flat and fell behind 2-0 after one period of play. We regrouped and played much better for the second and third periods and got some great goaltending from Amanda Bittman. Unfortunately we weren t able to get any pucks in the net and allowed our third goal with about a minute left in the game so we ended up losing 3-0. It was a bit of a bummer of a loss since we had been on such a good run recently, but we ran into a good team and we will look to regroup as we play again tomorrow against Bemidji. Alexandria 1 Bemidji 0 (OT) On Saturday the Lady Cardinals JV hockey team played against Bemidji. This was the second time we had played Bemidji this year and it was a great game, both teams showing how much they had improved from the beginning of the season until now. After a back and forth game regulation time ended without either team being able to score. In overtime Marki Oberg was able to score with assists by Kaia Illies and Sam Charles. Amanda Bittman was able to pick up another shutout to add to her solid season in net. It was great to get back on track playing solid hockey with only a couple of games left this week in the JV season. BOYS SWIMMING AND DIVING Congratulations to the swimming and diving team on their eighth place finish at the state true team meet on Saturday at the University of Minnesota. We were missing three team members (Carter Holm, D'Anthony Moorer, and Eric Welle) whose points earning potential was definitely missed. In spite of this, the team surged forward to swim season bests at the competition. Congratulations to the 100 breaststroke champion, Nic Chromey, who held off challenges from a talented field to win the event. DANCE TEAM The Cardinal Dance Team had their last home meet of the season on Friday evening. It was a smaller meet with 4 schools attending. In the varsity division 3 teams competed in kick and 2 teams competed in jazz. The Cards won kick and jazz and had outstanding performances in each for the home crowd! In kick the Cards had a decisive win with all judges having them in 1st place over Minnewaska and BBE. In jazz scores were a bit closer, one judge had BBE ranked over us, but still a win for Alexandria. The team is meeting their goals and is in a good position for this point in the season. Before the results were announced the dance team took time to recognize and thank their parents as well as the 5 seniors on the team. Next up SECTIONS! The Section 4AA dance meet is at Rocori High School on Saturday, February 4th beginning at 11:00am. PERFORMER OF THE WEEK
4 McKenna Ellingson has been selected Central Lakes Conference Performer of the Week in Girls Hockey. In 4 games McKenna scored 8 goals and 3 assists. Congratulations McKenna! A & B Days if School is Closed We apologize for any confusion there may have been regarding A & B Days at AAHS following the snow day last Friday, November 18 th, when school was closed. Due to the fact that AAHS interacts with many business partners and we have many speakers set up to come into the classrooms, the A & B Day schedule is set and remains the same regardless of snow days. For example, Monday, November 21 st was scheduled to be a B Day. AAHS was closed on Friday, November 18 th due to the snowstorm and it was an A Day. Therefore, Monday, November 21 st remained a B Day. If we have a number of snow days and they all happen to be on A Days (or all on B Days), then administration will re-evaluate and may change the AB schedule near the end of each semester to make sure students are receiving the same number of A & B Days. You will be informed if the AB schedule changes near the end of the semester.
