1 CARDINAL CONNECTION August 28, 2017 NO EVENTS TODAY RESULTS FROM THE WEEKEND BOYS SOCCER VARSITY Alexandria 3 Detroit Lakes 1 The Cardinals traveled to Detroit Lakes to take on the Lakers. Alexandria got on the board first in the 25 th minute on a goal from Michael Kuhn assisted from Cameron Rice. Just 14 minutes latter that team switch roles with Cameron Rice putting the ball in the back of the net from a pass from Michael Kuhn. That made the score 2-0 at the end of the second half. As in the last game the Cardnial boys controlled the pace of the game maintain possession of the ball for the majority of the first half. At the beginning of the second half a heavy rain started to come down creating a very wet surface as well as many puddles which made control of the ball and passing extremely difficult. The path and speed of the ball became unpredictable would often stop when it hit a puddle. In the 48 th minute the Lakers scored on a direct free Kick to make the score 2-1. Just 3 minutes latter Cameron Rice scored on a penalty kick after Jacob Sirra was take down in the penalty area which made the final score 3-1 in favor of the Cards. Justn Balcome was goal keeper and turned away 1 shots on net. Our next game is at Sartel on Tuesday at 5pm. GIRLS SOCCER VARSITY DL 3 Alex 2 After a lopsided loss in the season opener at EGF, the Cards were at home against DL on Saturday. Sidney Drew's two goals in the first half gave the Cards a two goal lead at the half. Drew's first goal came on a rebound off a Josie Minnerath shot that the DL GK wasn't able to handle cleanly. The second goal came off a very well executed play that started when Anna Zwilling sent a ball down the right touch line for Camille Hegstad to run onto. Camille beat the defender, cut in as she attacked the goal line, the cut back a perfect pass for Sidney to finish with a one touch shot. The second half saw DL attacking a lot harder and being able penetrate through the Alex D too many times. DL's scoring started when the ball got behind the Alex defense and the charging Alex GK, Summer Gerhardt came out to make a strong challenge on the ball but was beat by the DL attacker. Alex GK's Sophia Vinje had a shutout during the first half. Sophmore Summer Gerhardt gave up 3 goals on a ramped up DL attack during the second half. Next up is Sartell on Tuesday and Sauk Rapids on Thursday. GIRLS TENNIS VARSITY Alexandria Home Quad: Alexandria 7 Monticello 0 #1 singles: Jamie Lanoue (A) def. Mallory Yanda & Autumn Botz (A) 8-3 Friday The girls tennis team hosted it's annual quad and Alexandria went 2-0 on the day. In the opening round we defeated Monticello 7-0. Jamie Lanoue, Alli Prestby, Brianna Holm, and Rachel Bitzan at 1,2,3,and 4th singles respectively all won in straight sets, not giving up more than five games at any spot. Our doubles lineup of Taylor Partington & Laura Wilmesmeier at first, Madison Ressemann & Abby Sater at second, and Annie Harding & Kaylee Svee at third also won in straight sets, but several of the sets were very close. In my eighteen years of coaching girls tennis we have never lost to Monticello, and our girls have done an amazing job of keeping that string going. In the second round we faced Foley and got a hard fought 4-3 victory. The girls recorded two singles wins, and two doubles wins to pick up the W. Alli Prestby and Rachel Bitzan won in singles, and Laura & Taylor won at first doubles, and Madison & Abby won at second doubles. this was quite a match as six of the seven matches had tie-breakers at some point. Rachel came back from a set down at fourth singles to win the second set and the third set breaker to get her point, Taylor & Laura had to win a second set breaker to get their point, and Madison & Abby had to win a second set breaker to win their point. Jamie lost a third set breaker at first singles as did Brianna Holm at third singles, and Annie & Kaylee lost a third set breaker at third doubles. It was one of those matches where we could have won 7-0, or lost 1-6. The third match of the day was rained out, and we had five matches on the courts against Anoka, and we led at every spot, so it was a shame to see the rain move in and end the day of play. This was a big confidence booster for the girls, and although we did not play our best tennis we feel it was good to be pushed and challenged early in the season. I am happy with the determination the girls are showing, now we simply have to improve our skills and gain some confidence as we go along. We improve to 3-2 overall, and travel to Fergus Falls Tuesday to face the Otters.
