Bethany Chatterton & Aftyn Schmidt (DL) 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 The Cardinal girls tennis team competed in the north sub-section tournament up in Grand Forks last Thursday. In the first round the Cardinals defeated Detroit Lakes 7-0. Our girls came out and wanted to set the tone for the day and did just that with a convincing win over a solid DL squad.
2 That win set the stage for a rematch with the 2nd seeded Lumberjacks of Bemidji. Bemidji had defeated the Cardinals early in the season by a 4-3 score, so we knew we had our hands full but we felt we were up for the challenge. The girls were focused and ready, and we played one of our better matches of the season but the Lumberjacks were just a little better on this day, and defeated the Cardinals 5-2. With the exception of first singles all the matches were extremely close and any of them could have had different outcomes. Allie and Rachel at third and fourth singles respectively battled hard and have been so successful for us this season at those spots, but on this day we were unable to get a point from either spot, when we usually count on at least one if not two in most matches. Laura started fast at second singles and won her first set and things looked good there but her opponent battled back and won the next two sets to get that point. Taylor & Brianna had a 5-4 lead in the first set at first doubles and were serving for the set when the bottom fell out and we lost nine of the next eleven games and the point. Our two points came from second doubles Madison & Abby, and third doubles Annie & Kaylee where they both played well and played some of their best tennis of the season. It was a sad way to end the season and the girls took it very hard, and rightfully so, they had their sights set on making it to the section tourney, a place we haven't been for a number of years now, and to see it all come to an abrupt halt is hard. This team surpassed most of my expectations and continually got better after the half way point of the season but they came up a little short, and that is Okay as long as they keep every thing in perspective. We end the year at 15-9 overall, and once again hit that 15 win mark. The girls have a lot to be proud of and can hold their heads high. Our awards banquet will be held on Oct. 26th. TENNIS SUBSECTION INDIVIDUAL Doubles: Kvick & Leake (TRF) defeated Laura Wilmesmeier & Madison Ressemann (A) 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 Haugen & Barrett (BEM) defeated Taylor Partington & Brianna Holm (A) 6-2, 6-3 Singles: Alli Prestby (A) defeated Isabelle Rockstad (Moorhead) 6-3, 6-3 Jamie Lanoue (A) defeated Kira Beier (TRF) 6-3, 6-0 Second Round: Abby Kelm (BEM) defeated Alli Prestby (A) 6-0, 6-1 Jamie Lanoue (A) defeated Britney Fletcher (Brd) 6-3, 6-3 Semi Finals: Jamie Lanoue (A) defeated Payge Fitterer (Brd) 6-0, 6-2 Finals: Abby Kelm (BEM) defeated Jamie Lanoue (A) 6-0, 6-0 In the individual portion of the tourney we had two doubles teams and two singles players competing and our only individual that will be moving on to the section tourney is Jamie Lanoue who fought her way all the way to the finals and took the runner up spot. Laura & Madison had a tough first round and competed hard but lost a heart breaking match in three sets to a Thief River duo. Laura and Madison have only played together twice prior to this day and it took a little time for them to adjust, but after losing the first set they fought back and won the second and it looked like we had they momentum, but the prowlers played big in the third set and denied our girls the chance to advance. Taylor and Brianna ran into a buzz saw from Bemidji. We were the 3rd seeded doubles team in the tourney and up to this point Taylor & Brianna had a 9-1 record together but the Lumberjack duo put an end to their season and played flawlessly winning in straight sets. Our girls didn't play their best but credit is due the Bemidji pair.
3 Alli Prestby won her first singles match over a solid Moorhead player and advanced to the second round where she had to face the tourney's first seeded player in Abby Kelm. Abby is the 7th ranked player in the state and for a reason. Alli was able to must a game and that is a feat to be proud of as Abby dominated the tourney en route to an eventual champion. Jamie Lanoue played her heart out in this tourney and it payed off. She won her first two rounds over good players from Thief River Falls and Brainerd to get to the semi final round where she would advance to the section tourney. In the semi final round she had to play the 2nd seeded player Payge Fitterer from Brainerd, a girl from Brainerd that has been a Cardinal killer for several seasons now. Jamie played almost flawless in a straight set win 6-0, 6-2 to reach the finals. In the finals Abby Kelm from Bemidji dominated Jamie, but I could not be more proud of the way Jamie kept competing and giving every bit of effort she had in her. It has been so rewarding to watch Jamie come so far in her game, and to watch her execute her strategies and be successful. Jamie will play the 3rd place finisher from the south sub-section in the section tourney next Saturday in Sartell. CROSS COUNTRY Alexandria Lions Invitational Meet of Champions Alexandria hosted the forty-fifth annual Meet of Champions at Arrowwood Resort and Conference Center. Twenty-two schools and over fourteen hundred runners participated with five girls teams participating that are ranked in the top twelve teams in the state.
