SPOLE-stra Scouting The Huskies: Washington will wrap 2008 by closing the book on its non-conference slate, hosting #22/18 Kansas State on Tuesday. It will be just over a week since the Huskies last took to the hardwood when they face the Wildcats, but it will be exactly one month since playing on their home floor. UW is coming off a 1-2 record at the Caribbean Classic in Cancun, Mexico, prior to the Christmas holiday. The Huskies will look to bounce back from their most recent loss, a two-point heartbreaker to Northern Colorado in the tournament finale, Dec. 21. The Huskies did pick up a big win over Florida State (Dec. 19), which was a nice answer to a disappointing loss to No. 1 UConn to open tournament play. Junior forward/center Laura McLellan was the Huskies bright spot in Mexico, reaching double-figures in all three games including a career-high 22 point scoring performance versus Northern Colorado. She leads the team with 12.0 points per game and a 50.6 percent field goal shooting percentage. Junior guard/forward Sami Whitcomb is also averaging 10.1 points per game and has a team-high 22 steals. Freshman guard/forward Kristi Kingma and senior guard/forward Michelle Augustavo are each averaging 8.4 points per game. Senior forward Heidi McNeill (4.6) and junior forward Lydia Young (4.6) share the team rebounding lead. The Huskies have endured a bit of a roller coaster season thus far. UW opened the year 0-2, but then went on to win three of its next four. Since then, the Huskies have lost two of three. The Huskies are led by second-year head coach Tia Jackson. This year s squad returns seven players and one starter from last year s team that finished the season with a record and placed sixth in the Pac-10 with an 8-10 league mark. Welcomed to the fold are eight newcomers including five freshmen, two junior college transfers and UCLA transfer Regina Rogers who will sit out the season due to NCAA rules. Of the Huskies seven returners, five are upperclassmen led by the senior duo of Augustavo and McNeill. Against Ranked Opponents: Washington s game against Kansas State on Tuesday will be its second against a ranked opponent this year. UW is 0-1 against ranked opponents this season, the one game coming against top-ranked UConn in the Caribbean Classic in Cancun, Mexico (Dec. 18). UW lost to the other Huskies Washington has an all-time record of against Top-25 teams, but is when playing a ranked opponent at home. The Huskies last win over a ranked opponent came against then-no. 9 California on March 2, 2008, in Seattle (74-66). Tough Stretch Ahead: Speaking of ranked opponents, starting with Tuesday s matchup with Kansas State, Washington will be facing three Top-25 teams in its next four games. Following the two-game homestand with K-State and Washington State this week, the Huskies hit the road again to face a pair of ranked Pac-10 foes in #11/8 Stanford (Jan. 8) and #13/9 California (Jan. 11). Home Sweet Home: The Huskies are happy to return home this week after a month-long, four-game road stretch. UW played four of its first five games at home, going 2-2 in that span. Washington is traditionally tough to beat on its home court, owning an all-time record of (.796) at Bank of America Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion. The Huskies were 10-5 at home last year after 12-2 and 12-3 seasons in and , respectively. Scouting Kansas State: Kansas State brings an undefeated 10-0 record into its post-holiday trip to the Northwest. KSU will face Washington State in Pullman on Sunday before continuing on to Seattle for Tuesday s game. The Wildcats have three players with double-figure scoring numbers led by 14.1 ppg from junior forward Ashley Sweat. Senior forward Marlies Gipson and senior guard Shalee Lehning average 13.4 and 11.4 ppg, respectively. Lehning leads the squad with 7.6 rebounds per game. As a team, KSU is averaging 66.4 points, while allowing its opponents to score just 48.7 points per game. Kansas State features four returning starters from last year s team that won the Big 12 title and advanced as far as the second round of the 2008 NCAA Tournament. KSU finished last year with a final Associated Press ranking of 16. All-Time Series With Kansas State: Tuesday marks the second-ever meeting between Washington and Kansas State. These teams met last year in Manhatten, Kans., on Nov. 10. It marked the season opener for both squads and Tia Jackson s debut as the head coach at UW. The Wildcats emerged with a victory over the visiting Huskies, led by 16 points apiece from Shalee Lehning and Kimberly Dietz. Katelan Redmon was the leading scorer for UW with 19 points. Last Game Recap - Northern Colorado 65, UW 63: Junior forward/center Laura McLellan scored a career-high 22 points, but Washington women s basketball lost hold of a 12-point second-half lead and was edged by Northern Colorado, 65-63, in the finale of the Caribbean Classic at the Moon Palace Resort, Dec. 21. The Huskies led by six at halftime and by as many as 12 points five minutes into the second-half. Washington was up five (60-55) with 3:53 to play, only to have the Bears mount an 8-0 run, giving them a advantage. UW senior guard Michelle Augustavo hit a long three-pointer to tie the game at 63 with 30 seconds on the clock. Then on Northern Colorado s (5-6) final possession, the Huskies nearly forced a turnover but the Bears picked up the loose ball and senior forward Jamie Schroeder drove through traffic to lay in the

3 winning basket with 4.3 seconds left. On UW s ensuing possession, sophomore guard Sarah Morton dribbled up court but was called with a dribbling violation as time expired. McLellan was Washington s bright spot, shooting 8-of-19 from the field and going 6-for-6 from the line. Her 22 points were the most scored by a Husky this season. Augustavo added 12 points on four three-pointers and junior guard Sami Whitcomb pulled down a team-high seven rebounds. Schroeder scored a team-high 21 points for Northern Colorado, including 11 in the second-half and the Bears final four points of the contest. Kaisha Brown (12 points) and Courtney Kranz (10) rounded out the top three UNC scorers. Northern Colorado hit 11 three-pointers, including nine in the first-half alone, and shot 44 percent from long range. Washington finished with a scoring advantage in the paint and won the battle on the boards, 36-28, but committed 20 turnovers. The Huskies shot 42 percent from the field including a 57.1 clip in the opening half. UNC shot 43.1 from the field, but made the most of its 11 made baskets from long range. Washington trailed for the first 10 minutes of the game, but strung together an 11-0 run to take control and didn t relinquish its lead until the final two minutes. McLellan scored 14 of her 22 points in the opening frame, but junior guard Sara Mosiman suffered a sprained ankle mid-way through the first half and did not return. Mosiman had been UW s leading scorer in its previous two contests of the tournament. Mac Attack: Junior forward/center Laura McLellan is already having a breakout year. McLellan entered the season with a career scoring average of 4.2 points per game and is now leading the squad with a 12.0 scoring average and a 50.6 field goal shooting percentage. She has reached double-figures in scoring in seven of nine games, including four straight to open the year and has three-straight heading into Tuesday s game. She is coming off a career-high 22-point scoring perfromance versus Northern Colorado, a game in which she shot 8-of-19 from the field and was 6-of-6 from the free-throw line. She also tallied 10 points against No. 1 UConn and 11 in UW s win over Florida State in Cancun. McLellan is averaging 4.3 rebounds and also leads the team with a 81.7 percent clip from the charity stripe (22-of-27). Augustavo Hitting The Mark: Senior guard/forward Michelle Augustavo has been a key off the bench for Washington as of late, racking four double-figure scoring efforts in the last six games. She turned in back-to-back season-high 15-point scoring performances versus Seattle University (Nov. 28) and Clemson (Nov. 30) and tallying a third-straight double-figure effort with 12 points at Pepperdine (Dec. 3). A long-range shooting specialist, she leads the Huskies and ranks seventh in the Pac-10 with 2.1 three-pointers per game. All 15 of her points in the win over Seattle U came from three-point range and she was nearly perfect from long-distance (5-of-7). Against Clemson, Augustavo also helped out with five rebounds and bettered that the next game grabbing a team and season-high six boards at Pepperdine. Most recently, she scored 12 points against Northern Colorado, all four field goals coming from beyond the arc. Already earning accolades, Augustavo was named to the 2008 Husky Classic All-Tournament Team. Sink It Sami: Like she was last year, junior guard/forward Sami Whitcomb is one of Washington s most versatile and talented players. Whitcomb is second on the squad with a 10.1 scoring average, while also leading the team with 2.4 steals. Whitcomb tallied back-to-back 18-point scoring efforts versus Clemson (Nov. 30) and Pepperdine (Dec. 3) and has five double-figure scoring games this year. Also a long-range threat, Whitcomb is second on the team with 11 three-point field goals made. On the other end of the floor, much of the Huskies defensive success can be attributed to the Southern California native, as she ranked third in the Pac-10 in steals as of Dec. 22. She grabbed a season-high seven steals in UW s with Boise State (Nov. 23), just two away from her career-high and four away from UW s school record. Freshmen Making An Impact: Washington has received substantial contributions from two true freshmen - guard/forward Kristi Kingma and forward Mollie Williams. Kingma has started all nine games and is tied for third on the team in scoring with 8.4 points per game. Kingma has reached double-figures in scoring five times, including a season-best performance of 14 points at Pepperdine (Dec. 3). Williams has tallied two double-figure scoring efforts with 10 versus Seattle U (Nov. 28) and 12 versus Clemson (Nov. 30). Williams has played in every game, earning two starts during Heidi McNeill s absence due to injury. In her first career start versus Clemson, Williams made the most of her opportunity, turning in career-best numbers of 12 points and eight rebounds. Her inside presence has especially been felt on the defensive end as she has already recorded nine blocks - tops on the team and tied for sixth in the Pac-10. Defensive-Minded: The Huskies look to generate offense from their defense and have done so with success. In three of its four victories, Washington forced the opposition to commit 30 or more turnovers (32 vs. BSU; 30 vs. SU; 31 vs. Pepperdine) and collected 15 or more steals (23 vs. BSU; 17 vs. SU; 15 vs. Pepperdine). Much of the defensive charge has been led by junior guard Sami Whitcomb who ranks third in the Pac-10 with 2.4 steals per game (22 overall). Freshman guard Kristi Kingma is also sixth in the Pac-10 in steals (1.9). As a team, UW is third in the Pac-10 in steals (11.6). The all-time record for the Husky women s basketball program stands at Leader of the Pack: Now with one year of head coaching experience under her belt, Tia Jackson is in the midst of her second campaign as the Huskies' Top Dawg in Last season, a young UW squad garnered a record, with highlights including a come-from behind last-second shot win over eventual NCAA Tournament team Purdue and a dramatic upset of ninth-ranked California in the regular season finale. UW finished sixth in the Pac-10 standings with an 8-10 league mark. Jackson had three players earn conference honors at season's end, led by senior Emily Florence's nod to the All-Pac-10 third-team and the inaugural Pac-10 Defensive Team. Sophomore Sami Whitcomb was tabbed to the Pac- 10 Defensive honorable mention squad and Katelan Redmon earned Pac-10 All-Freshman Team acclaim. The springtime also saw the graduation of Jackson's three seniors - Florence, Dominique Banks and Andrea Plouffe. She was named the eighth head coach in the history of the women s basketball program on April 6, Jackson came to UW after a successful 11-year tenure in the assistant coaching ranks. Before arriving on Montlake, she spent the previous two seasons as an assistant coach at Duke, where she was considered by many experts as one of the top recruiters in the country. She helped lead the Blue Devils to the NCAA championship game in 2006 and the NCAA Sweet 16 in In addition to working at Duke, Jackson served as an assistant coach at UCLA ( ), Stanford ( ), and Virginia Commonwealth ( ). As an assistant coach, she has been to four NCAA Tournaments and one NCAA Final Four. Jackson played her collegiate career at the University of Iowa where she was a two-time All-Big Ten selection and helped lead the Hawkeyes to the 1993 NCAA Final Four. After graduating from Iowa in 1995, Jackson played one season in the WNBA (1997) as a member of the Phoenix Mercury before her career was cut short by knee injuries. Jackson picked up her first collegiate head coaching victory when the Huskies defeated Northern Arizona (83-70) in the second round of the Waikiki Beach Marriott Classic, Nov. 17. Her overall record as a head coach stands at The Schedule: UW will once again be challenged by a formidable schedule in , a slate that features eight opponents that went to postseason play last year including NCAA Final Four teams Connecticut and Stanford. The Huskies non-conference schedule will be highlighted by a trip to the Caribbean Classic MTE in Cancun, Mexico, Dec , where they will face two 08 NCAA Tournament teams in national semifinalist UConn and Florida State (second round), along with Northern Colorado out of the Big Sky Conference. Non-conference home contests include matchups with a pair of WNIT teams from last year in Gonzaga and Boise State, along with the annual Husky Classic and 2008 Big 12 champion Kansas State. The non-conference road schedule takes UW to Weber State and Pepperdine before the Cancun tournament. The always competitive Pac-10 schedule is highlighted with contests versus NCAA runner-up Stanford, as well as California and Arizona State which both advanced to the second round of the 08 tournament. Familiar Face In A New Place: Husky fans will notice a familiar face on the coaching staff this year - assistant Judy Spoelstra. No stranger to the Pac-10, Spoelstra returns to the collegiate coaching ranks this year for the first time since wrapping up a 10-year tenure as the head coach at Oregon State in While in Corvallis, she was tabbed the 2000 Pac-10 Coach of the Year and led the Beavers to one NCAA Tournament appearance and four consecutive trips to the WNIT. A Washington native, Spoelstra also was the head coach at Montana State for six years ( ). UW Picked To Finish Seventh By Both Pac-10 Coaches And Media: Washington was projected to finish seventh in both of the Pac-10 Preseason Coaches and Media Polls. The Coaches Poll was announced Oct. 24 and the media poll was announced Nov. 13. Eight-time defending champion and 2008 NCAA Championship finalist Stanford was tabbed to win this year s league crown by both groups. Dawgs Making A Difference: The Washington women s basketball program is extremely active in community service, making it a priority to give back to the local community. The Huskies have already started monthly visits to Seattle Children s Hospital which will continue through the school year. There the Huskies interact with patients and patients families, playing games, doing arts and crafts, or whatever might be asked of them. Most recently, players volunteered at the Seattle Walk for Hope in the beginning of October - a breast cancer fundraiser and awareness event held at Magnuson Park. UW players also worked this past summer with a program called Sisters in Strength headed up by former Roosevelt HS and Iowa State star, Lindsey Wilson. It is an exercise, mentorship and life skills program for teenage girls in foster care within the Seattle area. Each of the young girls in the program is matched with a collegiate athlete for sessions of strength training and fitness, as well as workshops on goal setting, nutrition, self-esteen building and overall well-roundedness.
