Florence is the lone senior available to play, as her fellow upperclassmen Andrea Plouffe and Dominique Banks have been hit with injuries. Plouffe, UW s top returning scorer from last year who has averaged at least 10 points a game each of the last two seasons, is currently out with Achilles tendonitis in her right calf. Banks will redshirt the year to fully recover from double-leg surgery which she underwent a year ago to repair stress fractures. Looking to help with the on-floor leadership is junior transfer Michelle Augustavo. Augustavo, who sat out last year due to NCAA rules, will aim to make a strong UW debut after playing her first two seasons at the University of San Diego. Also returning are junior forward Heidi McNeill, sophomore forward/center Laura McLellan and sophomore guards Sami Whitcomb and Sara Mosiman. McNeill tallied back-to-back double figure scoring games in UW s exhibition contests but was held to six points at Kansas State, despite making her first career start. Whitcomb, having secured a starting role as well, will be a strong outside presence on the perimeter. Mosiman had the same surgery that Banks did on one leg back in August, and made her return at Kansas State. McLellan is still sidelined recovering from offseason knee surgery. In Plouffe and McLellan s absence, Coach Jackson will look to the young pups to shore up the front line, led by Jess McCormack, a member of the New Zealand National Team. Another freshman, guard Katelan Redmon, made an impact early, leading the squad with 19 points in the opener. UW Falls In Season Opener At Kansas State: Freshman guard Katelan Redmon scored a team-high 19 points and senior guard Emily Florence added a career-high 15, but it wasn t enough for the Huskies to hand first-year head coach Tia Jackson her first win, as Washington fell to Kansas State, 88-61, in both team s season opener at Bramlage Coliseum, Saturday. Turnovers proved costly for Washington (0-1), which committed six in just over the first three minutes. Kansas State (1-0) was quick to take advantage, sprinting out to 10-0 run to open the game and the Huskies were never quite able to recover. UW trailed by as many as 18 points in the first half but came back to cut its halftime deficit to 13 (43-30). The Huskies opened the second-half with a three-pointer from Florence to cut KSU s lead to 10 (43-33) and then matched K-State basket-forbasket until the Wildcats unloaded with a 23-6 spurt to go up by 29 with 13:20 remaining. Washington committed 26 turnovers in the game, which Kansas State turned into 31 points 23 coming in just the first half. But the Huskies finished the night with a advantage in rebounding, led by a game-high eight boards from freshman center Jess McCormack. Redmon was stellar in her collegiate debut for the Huskies, connecting on 8-of-14 shots from the field including a trio of three-pointers. She also grabbed six rebounds, dished three assists and made two steals. Florence went 5-of-9 from the field, including a 3-for-3 clip from three-point range. She also connected on both of her free-throw attempts. Florence bettered her previous career high of 13 points set three times previously. Sophomore guard Sami Whitcomb was the third Husky to finish in double-figure scoring, sinking all 12 of her points in the first half. Whitcomb was 5-of-17 from the field and 2-of-9 from three-point range. Jackson Begins First Year At Washington: Tia Jackson was named the eighth head coach in the history of the women s basketball program on April 6, Jackson begins her first season at Washington after a successful 11-year tenure in the assistant coaching ranks. Before coming to UW, she spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach at Duke, where she was considered by many experts as one of the top recruiters in the country. She helped lead the Blue Devils to the NCAA championship game in 2006 and the NCAA Sweet 16 in In addition to working at Duke, Jackson served as an assistant coach at UCLA ( ), Stanford ( ), and Virginia Commonwealth ( ). As an assistant coach, she has been to four NCAA Tournaments and one NCAA Final Four. Jackson played her collegiate career at the University of Iowa where she was a two-time All-Big Ten selection and helped lead the Hawkeyes to the 1993 NCAA Final Four. After graduating from Iowa in 1995, Jackson played one season in the WNBA (1997) as a member of the Phoenix Mercury before her career was cut short by knee injuries. Scouting Gonzaga: The Zags return 10 players - including three starters - from last year s squad that made its inaugural appearance at the NCAA Tournament last season. Gonzaga, seeded 12th, suffered a first round loss vs. Middle Tennessee State. Looking to lead the way for the Bulldogs will be sophomore forward Heather Bowman (WCC

3 Newcomer of the Year), junior guard Jami Bjorklund and senior guard Rachel Kane. Bowman is the team s top returning scorer, averaging 13.0 points per game last year. Gonzaga was picked to finish second on the preseason WCC coaches poll and is receiving votes in the WBCA/USA Today/ESPN preseason poll. All-Time Series Vs. Gonzaga: Washington leads the all-time series with Gonzaga These two teams met last year in Seattle, with the Huskies winning (Dec. 15, 2006). In fact the last three meetings in the series have taken place in Seattle. The last time the Huskies played the Zags on their home court was 10 years ago - Dec. 9, Washington won that game Redmon Returns Home: Freshman guard/forward Katelan Redmon, coming off a teamhigh 19-point scoring output in her collegiate debut at Kansas State Saturday, will play in her hometown of Spokane when the Huskies take on Gonzaga Monday night. The Huskies even held a practice on Sunday at Redmon s alma mater, Lewis & Clark High School. Redmon was a two-time Street & Smith s honorable mention All-American and a three-time first-team All-Greater Spokane League selection at Lewis & Clark. Season Openers: With its loss at Kansas State, Saturday, Washington fell to is in season openers. The Huskies have now lost their last two straight season openers after falling at Marquette last year (61-78), but have still ended up on the winning side five times in the last seven years. The Huskies have opened on the road 19 times, including six times in the last seven years and eight in the last 10. Huskies Split Exhibition Games: The Huskies came out on the winning and losing ends of their first two preseason tuneups last week. UW cruised past Love & Basketball, 84-59, in its first exhibition led by a game-high 21 points from sophomore guard Sami Whitcomb. Junior forward Heidi McNeill added a double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds. Senior point guard Emily Florence (12 pts, nine boards, four assists), freshman center Kali Bennett (10 points) and freshman forward/center Mackenzie Argens (11) joined Whitcomb and McNeill in double-figures. UW then met a true test facing its Division II rival, Seattle Pacific, at Bank of America Arena, Tuesday. The Huskies fell victim to a 12-0 SPU run during the last few minutes of the game as the Falcons came away with the victory. McNeill led three Huskies in double-figure scoring with 15 points. Freshman guard/forward Katelan Redmon scored 14 and Whitcomb added 12 points to go along with a team-high nine rebounds. UW ended up having four players average double-figure scoring in the two games, led by Whitcomb s 16.5 per outing. McNeill averaged 14.5, Redmon averaged 11.0 and Florence averaged 10.0 points. McNeill was the team s leading rebounder, averaging 9.5 boards in the two outings. Road Warriors: Washington will play its first five games of the season on the road before making its home debut versus Idaho in the first round of the Husky Classic, Nov. 23. After UW s season-opening road swing to Kansas State and Gonzaga, the Huskies will head to Honolulu, Hawaii for the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort Classic, Nov UW will face host Hawaii (Nov. 16), Northern Arizona (Nov. 17) and UC Davis (Nov. 18) in the three-day, round-robin style tournament. Banks To Redshirt: Senior guard Dominique Banks will redshirt the season, Jackson announced at media day Oct. 30. Banks missed the first 11 games last year after having surgery to repair stress fractures in both of her legs in September of She returned midway through the year and earned her way back into the starting lineup, averaging 4.4 points, but is still not 100 percent. Youth Movement: The Huskies 14-player roster includes nine underclassmen - three sophomores and six freshmen. In fact, UW s starting lineup in the squad s season opener at Kansas State, Saturday, featured two freshmen and one sophomore. Freshmen Katelan Redmon and Jess McCormack earned starting nods in their collegiate debuts. Redmon and McCormack headline UW s freshman recruiting class that was ranked No. 8 in the nation by Blue Star Basketball when the group was announced last fall.
