The Cardinal won a school-record seven games during the month of March and wrapped up the year as the Pac-12 s winningest program. Meanwhile, Stanford has been picked to finish fourth in the Pac- 12 men s basketball preseason media poll, as announced at the conference s Media Day earlier in the week. 2 The Anne and Tony Joseph Director of Men s Basketball Johnny Dawkins Overall Record: (5th yr.) At Stanford: (5th yr.) In just his first four seasons as a head coach at any level, Johnny Dawkins has made an impact on one of college basketball s most storied programs. Dawkins contributions since arriving on The Farm have come in the form of both team and individual success, most notably guiding the Cardinal to the 2012 Postseason NIT championship. Meanwhile, one year after leading Stanford to a 20-win season for the 20th time in school history, Dawkins oversaw Landry Fields progression from key reserve to all-league performer and eventual NBA Draft pick. Dawkins has also made significant strides off the court, with three straight highly-touted recruiting classes yielding some of the nation s elite players. More impressively, that same young talent is being developed quickly. Last year, Chasson Randle became the fourth player to earn All-Freshman Team status among Pac-12 players during Dawkins tenure following a six-year period in which only two Cardinal rookies were honored. A high standard in the classroom has been established during Dawkins tenure. In , Stanford was represented with a conference-best eight players named to the Pac-12 All-Academic team. For the third season in a row, Stanford had more honorees than any conference school. Stanford s four selections among the first and second teams were the program s most since , when five players made up the top 10 spots. Stanford produced a record last year en route to capturing the Postseason NIT title, the third championship in school history. The Cardinal chalked up its best win total since a 28-8 campaign in Stanford was the Pac-12 s winningest program and tallied a league-best four victories against the RPI s top-50. The Cardinal wrapped up the season at 15-16, fielding a team without a senior for the first time in school history. Stanford finished during the campaign, Dawkins second year at the helm. In , Dawkins directed Stanford to a record and reached the CBI semifinals. In addition to surpassing Robert Burnett as the winningest first-year head coach in school history, Dawkins ranked third in victories among the 21 first-year head coaches in Division I with no prior college head coaching experience. Dawkins, 49, became Stanford s 17th head coach on Apr. 28, 2008, after 11 years as a member of the Duke coaching staff. For the previous nine seasons ( ), Dawkins served as Duke s associate head coach and began his coaching career as an assistant in During Dawkins 11 years at Duke, the Blue Devils won the 2001 NCAA championship, six ACC regular season crowns and seven ACC Tournament titles. Dawkins finished his career in 1986 as the school s all-time leading scorer. Dawkins was a two-time first team All-ACC performer in 1985 and 1986 as well as the school s first consensus two-time, first team All- American. As a senior, he was tabbed ACC Tournament MVP while also becoming the first Naismith Player of the Year recipient in school history Captains Named Junior Aaron Bright and sophomore Chasson Randle have been named this year s captains. Cardinal-White Scrimmage Opens Season Stanford held its annual Cardinal-White scrimmage two weeks ago at Maples Pavilion, with the Cardinal squad posting a victory over the White team. The teams combined to shoot 47.0 percent overall and 40.7 percent from beyond the arc, with six different players knocking down at least one triple. The squads combined to shoot 82.1 percent (23-28) from the charity stripe while hauling down 32 rebounds. Among the notable stat lines for the Cardinal roster: Chasson Randle (16 pts. on 7-9 shooting), Josh Huestis (12 pts. on 3-5 shooting, 4 reb.) and John Gage (5 pts., 7 reb.). The White team was backed by standout efforts from Dwight Powell (19 pts. on 8-11 shooting, 4 reb., 3-3 three-pointers) and Anthony Brown (15 pts. on 4-6 shooting, 5-5 free throws). Bay Area Rivals Collide In Season Opener Stanford squares off against San Francisco in its season opener on Nov. 9, with the game to be played at Oracle Arena in Oakland. The neutral site contest represents the first meeting between the two Bay Area programs since Nov. 23, 2005, when the Cardinal defeated the Dons at Maples Pavilion. Stanford leads the all-time series Originally built in 1966, Oracle Arena has been home to the NBA s Golden State Warriors since Simply Put, The Schedule Is Stacked This year s schedule features 15 opponents who qualified for the postseason last year, an appearance in the loaded Battle 4 Atlantis and an unprecedented amount of television coverage. Arguably the most challenging schedule in recent memory, Stanford will have an opportunity to quickly establish a high RPI thanks to a rigorous non-conference slate that includes Belmont, Missouri, NC State, Northwestern and two more teams out of a group that includes Louisville, Northern Illinois, Duke, VCU, Memphis and Minnesota. As for this year s unbalanced conference schedule, Stanford will host the Washington schools and face the Arizona schools on the road while playing everyone else twice. Pac-12 Networks Provide Increased Exposure For the first time in school history, every Stanford game will be televised. The driving force is the launch of the Pac-12 Networks, which results in every conference home game being aired on television. The Pac-12 men s basketball television package features 221 contests telecast to national and regional audiences, including 150 games aired on the Pac- 12 Networks, 47 on ESPN/ESPN2/ESPNU, 22 on FSN and two nationally on CBS. Early rounds of the Pac-12 Tournament will be televised on Pac-12 Networks, with the championship game slated to be shown on ESPN. Battle 4 Atlantis: The Best Fall Tournament Widely billed as the nation s premier preseason tournament, the Battle 4 Atlantis will take place during Thanksgiving weekend (Nov ) at the famed Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island, Bahamas. The stacked eight-team field includes six squads that have participated in the NCAA Final Four over the last 15 seasons. This year s participants have combined for more than 160 NCAA postseason appearances. Stanford opens against Missouri, with the winner squaring off against either preseason No. 2 pick Louisville or Northern Iowa, which has won 93 games over the past four seasons. In the third game of the tournament, Stanford faces either Duke, Memphis, Minnesota or VCU. Noteworthy Numerology Anthony Brown has switched from No. 3 to No. 21, which was previously worn by Nick Robinson ( ). Junior Elliott Bullock will wear No. 51, which hasn t seen action since Bill Elfving ( ). Freshman Rosco Allen will sport No. 12, most recently following up Olatunde Sobomehin ( ). Fellow rookie Christian Sanders has been assigned No. 1, last worn by Mitch Johnson ( ) while newcomer Grant Verhoeven is No. 30, most recently donned by Johannes Burge ( ). STANFORD BASKETBALL ON THE RADIO John Platz, a reserve guard at Stanford from , is in his third season as the team s play-by-play announcer after 21 years as the club s color analyst. Platz also serves as the sideline reporter for football broadcasts. A three-year letterwinner at Stanford from , Drew Shiller returns for his third season as the team s color analyst. All games are broadcast live on KNBR 1050 AM.

(57.1) 3 - Freshman Impact Rookies Rosco Allen, Christian Sanders and Grant Verhoeven will have a chance to contribute immediately this year. The trio should be excited to get going, considering how freshmen have flourished under head coach Johnny Dawkins tenure. In , Chasson Randle was honored as one of five picks for the Pac-12 All-Freshman Team, becoming the fourth player to earn All- Freshman Team status during Dawkins tenure. Quite an accomplishment, considering only two Cardinal newcomers were honored over the previous six-year period. Season Scoring For the 11th straight year, a different player led Stanford in scoring. Chasson Randle closed out with a team-best 13.8 points per game, following Jeremy Green (16.7 ppg in ), Landry Fields (22.0 ppg in ), Anthony Goods (16.2 ppg in ), Brook Lopez (19.3 ppg in ), Lawrence Hill (15.7 ppg in ), Matt Haryasz (16.2 ppg in ), Dan Grunfeld (17.9 ppg in ), Josh Childress (15.7 ppg in ), Julius Barnes (16.0 ppg in ) and Casey Jacobsen (21.9 ppg in ) Postseason NIT Champions Stanford claimed its second NIT title in school history, also bringing home the hardware in One of four Pac-12 schools in the 32-team field, the Cardinal was seeded No. 3 in its region. Stanford defeated Cleveland State in the opening round, and after top-seeded Arizona and second-seeded Mississippi were upset in their first games, the Cardinal parlayed its sudden home-court edge into wins over Illinois State (92-88 OT) and Nevada (84-56). After beating Massachusetts in the semifinals, Stanford posted its fourth double-digit win of the tourney by hammering Minnesota in the final NIT CHAMPIONS: A CLOSER LOOK AT STANFORD S RUN FINAL PAC-12 STANDINGS Team Pac-12 Overall Washington California Oregon Arizona Colorado UCLA Stanford Oregon State Washington State Arizona State Utah USC Date Score Site Round March 13, 2012 Stanford 76, Cleveland State 65 Stanford, CA First March 19, 2012 Stanford 92, Illinois State 88 (OT) Stanford, CA Second March 21, 2012 Stanford 84, Nevada 56 Stanford, CA Quarterfinals March 27, 2012 Stanford 74, Massachusetts 64 New York, NY Semifinals March 29, 2012 Stanford 75, Minnesota 51 New York, NY Championship Five Quick-Hitters From The NIT Run Aaron Bright was named the tournament s Most Outstanding Player. Providing a spark off the bench in all five NIT games, Bright averaged a team-best 16.8 points during tourney competition and shot 64.1 percent overall, 66.7 percent from three-point territory and 88.0 percent from the foul line during the postseason stretch. Stanford clicked offensively during the NIT run, averaging 80.2 points per game while shooting 48.1 percent overall and 46.1 percent from long distance. Opponents averaged 64.8 points per game and connected on just 38.0 percent from the field. Perhaps most impressive, Stanford s defense generated 9.8 steals per game and forced 18.4 turnovers. Josh Owens also earned a spot on the NIT s All-Tournament team, averaging 12.0 points and a team-high 6.6 rebounds per game in five starts. Owens led the club in steals (11) and blocks (6) while shooting 54.3 percent overall during the postseason. Stanford became just the fourth team to play at New York s Madison Square Garden in both the Preseason and Postseason NIT during the same year, joining Notre Dame ( ), Syracuse ( ) and Ohio State ( ). When Stanford faced off against Minnesota in the NIT championship, it represented the first time in school history Stanford had played a game on March 29. Stanford s previous longest season wrapped up on March 28, with the Cardinal falling to Texas on that date in the 2008 NCAA Sweet 16 and losing to Kentucky on that same day in the 1998 Final Four. Additionally, Stanford s 37 games in a single season also represented a school record.

Brown, Powell Hope To Carry Momentum Into Anthony Brown and Dwight Powell proved to be effective weapons down the stretch for Stanford, shaking off early-season inconsistencies and playing through lingering injuries. In Stanford s final 10 games last year, Brown averaged 10.0 points and 5.2 rebounds while shooting 45.1 percent overall and 35.3 percent from three-point range. Over that same stretch, Powell averaged 7.0 rebounds and 5.5 rebounds while making 53.1 percent overall and connecting on 72.0 percent from the charity stripe. 17 Home Wins Establish School Record Stanford s rout of Nevada in the Postseason NIT quarterfinals was also its school-record 17th home win of the year. The previous best win total at Maples Pavilion (16) was achieved four years ago. Stanford is over its last 87 home games dating back to the start of the campaign that ended in an NCAA Sweet 16 appearance. Lineups Based On Matchups Head coach Johnny Dawkins employed 15 different starting lineups last year, with 10 Cardinal players receiving at least one starting nod. The starting combination of Chasson Randle, Jarrett Mann, Anthony Brown, Andrew Zimmermann and Josh Owens, used for the final eight games of the year, produced a team-best 7-1 record. In contrast, Dawkins used seven different lineups in , and six combinations in both and Winning The Rebound Battle Stanford owned an edge on the glass, averaging 37.2 rebounds per game compared to a 32.5 clip by its opponents. Stanford s rebounding margin (+4.7) ranked 40th in the country. Five different players averaged at least 3.0 rebounds per game, led by Josh Owens 5.9 clip.

5 MAD DOG BACK ON THE FARM Back in early June, head coach Johnny Dawkins announced the hiring of Mark Madsen as assistant coach. One of the program s most iconic and inspirational players, Madsen will work mainly with the post players. During his career, Madsen garnered All-America honors in each of his final two seasons while leading the Cardinal to four NCAA Tournament appearances, including the 1998 Final Four. A nine-year NBA veteran, Madsen spent six seasons as a member of the Minnesota Timberwolves following a three-year stint with the Los Angeles Lakers, in which he contributed to the franchise s 2001 and 2002 NBA titles. Madsen had spent the last two years on campus, completing coursework toward his MBA at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Known to everyone as Mad Dog for his signature physical and aggressive style of play, Madsen averaged 10.9 points and 7.9 rebounds for his Cardinal career while ranking among the school s top-10 all-time performers in field goal percentage (4th- 58.7), and rebounds (6th - 857). FIERY PREGAME SPEECH KEYS NIT CHAMPIONSHIP RUN Prior to last year s NIT semifinal win against UMass, Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis delivered an inspirational pregame speech inside the Cardinal locker room. The twominute pep talk, organized by the coaching staff as a surprise to the team, instantly became a YouTube phenomenon. By the time Stanford routed Minnesota in the NIT title game three days later, the video had logged over 410,000 views. In early October, the video reached the 1,000,000 mark. Prior to each game, Cardinal players watched a montage of Lewis highlights as part of their pregame preparation. So, you could imagine the shock when the 13-time Pro Bowler and 2000 Super Bowl MVP walked into the room. Here are some lasting quotes from Lewis speech, which has been embraced as a motivational tool by several other Stanford athletic teams. Meanwhile, parts of the speech were even incorporated into the University s official television spot. If tomorrow wasn t promised, what would you give for today? Whatever legacy you are going to leave, leave your legacy. Effort is between you and you. Because I m pissed off... for greatness. EIGHT PAC-12 ALL-ACADEMIC PICKS A SCHOOL RECORD Stanford was represented with a conference-best eight players named to the 2012 Pac-12 All- Academic team. For the third year in a row, Stanford totaled more honorees than any Pac-12 school. Stanford s four selections among the first and second teams were the program s most since , when five Cardinal players accounted for the top 10 spots. Jack Trotter and John Gage were named to the first team, Josh Owens and Andrew Zimmermann were appointed to the second team while Anthony Brown, Josh Huestis, Stefan Nastic and Dwight Powell earned honorable mention status. To be eligible, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall GPA and be either a starter or significant contributor. STANFORD BASKETBALL IN THE NEWS Excerpts from recent feature stories, game recaps, tweets, columns and blog posts spotlighting Stanford basketball can be found within this section. Madsen Transitioning Smoothly Into New Role by Mark Soltau, Oct. 29, 2012 Mark Madsen never envisioned returning to Stanford to help coach the men s basketball team. Like a lot of things in life, timing was everything. The former two-time Cardinal All-American, who helped lead Stanford to the NCAA Final Four in 1998, was living in Minnesota and was preparing to head back to Stanford to work on his MBA at the Graduate School of Business. A friend of Madsen s happened to be in a local burger joint and struck up a conversation with Cardinal assistant coach Mike Schrage, who was visiting. They called Madsen. As it turned out, there would be an opening on the Stanford staff following the season with the retirement of Dick Davey, so Schrage asked Madsen if he was interested. Soon, Johnny Dawkins, The Anne and Tony Joseph Director of Men s Basketball, got involved. Madsen accompanied the team on its tour of Spain last September and bonded with the coaching staff and players. I m going to really try to help out with the nuances of the game, Madsen said. In the pros, defense was my thing. This is already a tremendous defensive team and I hope to be able to add to that. Read more: Stanford Sports Blog Post - Scrimmage Recap by Tom FitzGerald, San Francisco Chronicle Oct. 20, 2012 Some quick impressions of Stanford, based on the Cardinal-White scrimmage: The big revelation was how good Dwight Powell looks. He looks much stronger, was blocking shots and was confident with his shooting (8-for-11, 19 points). Josh Huestis (12 points) also looks like he s spent plenty of time in the weight room. My guess is he ll be the team s leading rebounder. Chasson Randle (16 points, 7-for-9 shooting) and Aaron Bright (6 points, 5 assists) both looked quick. I ll still argue that Bright is more of a true point guard than Randle, but if you play them both, who would guard a 6-4 or 6-5 player? So Anthony Brown will probably start games at the 2. The most impressive of the three freshmen on this night was Christian Sanders. The 6-4 guard from Houston has textbook shooting form and seems to have a lot of court sense, but the other thing I liked about him was he drove to the hoop fearlessly. I ve thought all along that the key to this season will be Stefan Nastic. He is basically Stanford s low-post threat, although I supposed Johnny Dawkins won t start him in some games because he ll need a quicker, more athletic lineup. Nastic has benefited from playing for Serbia in the U20 World Championships. He scored only a couple of baskets on Friday, and he s far from polished as an offensive player. He ll help on defense and on the boards, though, if he can stay out of foul trouble. That s a big if. Read more: Q&A With Aaron Bright by Joseph Knox, College Chalktalk.com Oct. 10, 2012 Stanford finished last season as NIT champions. Looking forward to the upcoming season, what goals do you have for yourself individually? What are your aspirations for the team? I m going to keep it real simple: My goals individually would be to use last season as a building block and just keep improving in everything shooting percentage, as a leader, and as a player in general. As a team, our goals are obviously to make the NCAA Tournament and make a run at the whole thing. Everybody wants to win a championship, but for us to get there, we will need to take it one game at a time. We ll use last year as a building block for the upcoming year. Personnel and schemes often change yearly in college basketball. What changes or adjustments do you see Stanford making this season? I think we ll be able to be more of a running team than we were last year. We have a lot of guys, especially the junior class and back, that can get out and run. I believe that our coach is confident in us as basketball players and trusts us to make plays on the floor. He doesn t need to call out sets all the time. I would imagine that our games are going to be very entertaining and fun, as we ll get upand-down the floor. Read more:
