2 The Anne and Tony Joseph Director of Men s Basketball Johnny Dawkins Overall Record: (5th yr.) At Stanford: (5th yr.) In just his first four seasons as a head coach at any level, Johnny Dawkins has made an impact on one of college basketball s most storied programs. Dawkins contributions since arriving on The Farm have come in the form of both team and individual success, most notably guiding the Cardinal to the 2012 Postseason NIT championship. Meanwhile, one year after leading Stanford to a 20-win season for the 20th time in school history, Dawkins oversaw Landry Fields progression from key reserve to all-league performer and eventual NBA Draft pick. Dawkins has also made significant strides off the court, with three straight highly-touted recruiting classes yielding some of the nation s elite players. More impressively, that same young talent is being developed quickly. Last year, Chasson Randle became the fourth player to earn All-Freshman Team status among Pac-12 players during Dawkins tenure following a six-year period in which only two Cardinal rookies were honored. A high standard in the classroom has been established during Dawkins tenure. In , Stanford was represented with a conference-best eight players named to the Pac-12 All-Academic team. For the third season in a row, Stanford had more honorees than any conference school. Stanford s four selections among the first and second teams were the program s most since , when five players made up the top 10 spots. Stanford produced a record last year en route to capturing the Postseason NIT title, the third championship in school history. The Cardinal chalked up its best win total since a 28-8 campaign in Stanford was the Pac-12 s winningest program and tallied a league-best four victories against the RPI s top-50. The Cardinal wrapped up the season at 15-16, fielding a team without a senior for the first time in school history. Stanford finished during the campaign, Dawkins second year at the helm. In , Dawkins directed Stanford to a record and reached the CBI semifinals. In addition to surpassing Robert Burnett as the winningest first-year head coach in school history, Dawkins ranked third in victories among the 21 first-year head coaches in Division I with no prior college head coaching experience. Dawkins, 49, became Stanford s 17th head coach on Apr. 28, 2008, after 11 years as a member of the Duke coaching staff. For the previous nine seasons ( ), Dawkins served as Duke s associate head coach and began his coaching career as an assistant in During Dawkins 11 years at Duke, the Blue Devils won the 2001 NCAA championship, six ACC regular season crowns and seven ACC Tournament titles. Dawkins finished his career in 1986 as the school s all-time leading scorer. Dawkins was a two-time first team All-ACC performer in 1985 and 1986 as well as the school s first consensus two-time, first team All- American. As a senior, he was tabbed ACC Tournament MVP while also becoming the first Naismith Player of the Year recipient in school history. Scouting Colorado Colorado (12-6, 2-4 Pac-12) is coming off a split of its Pacific Northwest road trip, falling to Washington before bouncing back with a win at Washington State. The Buffaloes spent time in the national rankings after starting 6-0, boosted mostly after defeating Dayton, Baylor and Murray State to claim the Charleston Classic title. The Buffaloes were picked sixth in the Pac-12 preseason media poll, after finishing tied for fifth place last year at 11-7 before capturing the Pac-12 Tournament title and winning one game in the NCAA Tournament. Colorado is 7-1 at home. Colorado is averaging 70.5 points, 38.2 rebounds and shooting 45.2 percent. But the Buffs shoot only 66.8 percent from the foul line and commit 14.1 turnovers per game. Be sure to watch: Spencer Dinwiddie (14.6 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 77.4 percent FT, 46 assists), Askia Booker (14.2 ppg, 3.9 rpg, team-best 29 three-pointers), Josh Scott (13.0 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 52.7 percent FG) and Andre Roberson (10.5 ppg, 11.5 rpg, 25 blocks, 36 steals). Stanford All-Time vs. Colorado Stanford holds the all-time edge at 9-3. The Cardinal has won five in a row overall, including a sweep of last year s regular-season series. In fact, Stanford won both of last season s meetings by 20+ points. Colorado s most recent win in the series came on Dec. 23, 1990, with the Buffs booking an decision in Boulder. Notable Career Totals Against Colorado Stanford s backcourt duo of Aaron Bright and Chasson Randle gashed Colorado s defense in two games last year. Bright averaged 11.5 points and 4.0 assists while shooting 6-12 from the field. Randle averaged 19.0 points while connecting on overall. Meanwhile, both players were terrific from three-point territory, with Bright making 5-10 and Randle The one player Colorado managed to slow down was Dwight Powell (2-9 FG, eight points). Scouting Utah Utah (9-9, 1-5 Pac-12), which hosts California on Thursday, is also coming off a road split, sparked by a upset of Washington, which was previously unbeaten in the Pac-12. The Utes looked like a much-improved team during non-conference play, but dropped its first five Pac-12 contests before the surprise win at Washington. The Utes, who are 7-4 at home, were picked last in the Pac-12 preseason media poll, after finishing 6-25 overall last year and 3-15 in conference action. Utah is averaging 66.4 points, 37.1 rebounds and shooting 45.9 percent overall and 74.7 percent from the foul line. Utah is allowing 37.2 percent shooting- tops in the Pac-12. Keep an eye on: Jordan Loveridge (12.8 ppg, 7.3 rpg), Jarred DuBois (12.5 ppg, 82.7 percent FT, 58 assists), Jason Washburn (11.0 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 61.3 percent FG, 31 blocks). Stanford All-Time vs. Utah Utah owns a 15-8 edge. Last year s meetings were split, with Stanford pulling away for a home victory before Utah sneaked out a triumph in the rematch. It s been 79 years since Stanford last defeated Utah in Salt Lake City, with the Cardinal winning back on Dec. 21, Last season s game at Maples Pavilion was the first since March 20, 1987, when Utah posted an overtime victory in the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16. Notable Career Totals Against Utah In his first two career appearances against Utah, Chasson Randle averaged 15.0 points while making (43.4 percent) from the field. Seven of Randle s 10 baskets were from beyond the arc. Josh Huestis did the bulk of his damage in last year s first meeting, producing a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds. Huestis is 7-9 from the field against Utah. Upcoming Schedule Notes Stanford s Jan. 30 home game against Oregon will now be televised by ESPNU. Originally, the contest was slated to appear on Pac-12 Networks. The game will still tip at 8 p.m. Stanford s Feb. 6 road game against Arizona has been shifted from ESPN2 to ESPNEWS. The start time remains at 6 p.m. PT. STANFORD BASKETBALL ON THE RADIO John Platz, a reserve guard at Stanford from , is in his third season as the team s play-by-play announcer after 21 years as the club s color analyst. Platz also serves as the sideline reporter for football broadcasts. A three-year letterwinner at Stanford from , Drew Shiller returns for his third season as the team s color analyst. All games are broadcast live on KNBR 1050 AM.

Stanford shot 35.8 percent overall, slightly ahead of California s 34.9 percent clip. After making attempts from the field in the first half, Stanford was just 8-27 in the second. The Cardinal cashed in at the free throw line, making attempts and led by Dwight Powell s 9-9 performance. The Golden Bears were from the free throw line. Josh Huestis contributed 12 rebounds, representing the seventh time this year he has totaled 10+ boards in a game. Huestis, who added nine points, is now averaging 9.2 rebounds. Since being held scoreless for the first time in his career three weeks ago at USC, Chasson Randle is averaging 16.0 points over the last four games while shooting 48.0 percent. Stanford was from the field. The last time Stanford won a game despite making less than 20 buckets was Dec. 31, 2011, when the Cardinal shot in a victory over USC. Stanford has now defeated California in five of the last six games played at Maples Pavilion. The Cardinal has now made at least one three-pointer in 373 consecutive games, dating back to an 0-6 performance against Purdue in the John Wooden Tradition on Nov. 24, The Bright Lights Of ESPN Aaron Bright has definitely made the most of his opportunities to play on ESPN. Entering Thursday s game against Colorado on ESPNU, Bright has posted the following totals in 14 career games shown on the ESPN family of networks: 13.7 ppg, 54.2 percent (58-107) from the field, 48.2 percent (28-58) from three-point territory and 92.3 percent (48-52) from the foul line. So, What Exactly Worked Last Year? Colorado s campaign was a memorable one. The Buffaloes finished 24-12, won four games over four days to claim the conference title and advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament after upsetting sixth-seeded UNLV. Transitioning from the Big 12 to the Pac-12, it appeared as if Colorado had every conference team figured out. Except Stanford. The Cardinal routed the Buffaloes twice: at Maples Pavilion and one month later in Boulder. So, what exactly was the recipe for two blowout wins? A simple explanation suggests Stanford s offense just happened to click. The Cardinal scored 158 combined points over the two games: 79 in the first half and 79 in the second half. Tied at with 17:02 left to play in the first meeting, Stanford ambushed Colorado with a 32-5 scoring run to ice the game. In the rematch, Stanford built a halftime lead and held Colorado without a two-point basket until the 3:41 mark of the first half. Stanford made attempts (50.9 percent) over the two games, while Colorado was held to shooting (36.0 percent). Also, a 55.8 percent free throw clip didn t help the Buffs. The Cardinal was dialed in from three-point territory over both games, making (46.3 percent) from long distance. Conversely, the Buffaloes went cold at (27.8 percent). Stanford owned the glass, averaging 42.5 rebounds compared to Colorado s 26.5 boards. A big part of that difference was Josh Owens (9.5 rpg in two games), who has since graduated. Four of Colorado s key players struggled to make shots: Carlon Brown (5-19), Austin Default (8-21), Spencer Dinwiddie (3-14), Askia Booker (5-16). Gage Provides Boost Off The Bench John Gage contributed a career-high 14 points in Stanford s win over California. As usual, Gage was extremely efficient, doing his damage in only 19 minutes thanks to a 4-4 outing from long range. It was the fifth time this year Gage had reached double figures in scoring. The key for Gage this season has been simply staying on the floor. In games where Gage plays at least 15 minutes, he is averaging 9.8 points while shooting (51.1 percent) overall and (51.4 percent) from three-point territory. Cardinal Exceptional From The Charity Stripe Stanford is converting at a 74.2 percent clip that ranks 39th in the country. Only once in the last six years has Stanford finished the season making at least 70.0 percent or better, and that came in when the Cardinal was slightly over at 70.5 percent. Several players have enjoyed lengthy free throw streaks, including Aaron Bright s current stretch of 26 consecutive makes. Ironically, Bright has misfired on his last six attempts from beyond the arc and 11 shots overall. The Cardinal was 3-6 in Pac-12 action last year, tallying wins at Oregon State, USC and Colorado. Powell Continues To Pace The Cardinal Fully healthy and contributing consistently, Dwight Powell is showcasing the kind of dynamic all-around game many expected when he first arrived on The Farm. In addition to averaging 14.9 points and 7.6 rebounds, Powell is shooting 48.4 percent overall and 80.9 percent from the foul line. A 2011 Pac-10 All-Freshman pick, Powell has notched four double-doubles while establishing career highs in every category, including points (29 vs. Denver on Dec. 2) and rebounds (13 vs. Seattle on Nov. 28). Randle Quietly Producing In Last Four Games A season of early struggles for Chasson Randle hit rock bottom against USC back on Jan. 3, as the sophomore guard was held scoreless for the first time in his career. Since that contest, Randle is averaging 16.0 points while shooting (48.0 percent) from the field, 6-15 (40.0 percent) from beyond the arc and (62.5 percent) from the foul line in a modest fourgame stretch. For the season, Randle ranks second on the team in scoring (13.5 ppg) and first in assists (51) and steals (27) while excelling from the foul line (61-77, 79.2 percent). Huestis Simply Dominating The Glass Josh Huestis has developed into one of the Pac-12 s premier defensive performers. Huestis, who tallied 10 blocks against Seattle back on Nov. 28, leads the team in that category with 39 and his 2.2 swats per game rank 45th nationally. Huestis has registered 89 career blocks, tied with Jason Collins ( ) for eighth in school history. After grabbing 12 rebounds in the win against California last week, Huestis now leads the Cardinal at 9.2 boards per game. Allen Delivering From The Line Freshman Rosco Allen has showed plenty of promise, averaging 4.3 points and 2.5 rebounds while making seven starts and coming off the bench in 10 games. Allen s overall shooting totals are improving after a slow start, but the rookie has displayed a knack for drawing contact and getting to the free throw line. Allen has totaled almost as many free throw attempts (46) as field goal attempts (54). Allen is shooting 67.4 percent from the foul line. 12 Different Starters To Date Of Stanford s 14 players who have appeared in a game this year, 12 have made at least one start. Andy Brown and John Gage became the latest players to crack the starting lineup when both received nods during a Jan. 5 loss at UCLA. Only Grant Verhoeven and Wade Morgan have yet to start a game. Head coach Johnny Dawkins has used nine starting lineups this year. Stanford Winning Despite Shooting Struggles... It s no secret that Stanford has struggled with its shooting, connecting at 40.5 percent overall and 30.5 from three-point territory. Those marks both rank last in the Pac-12. The Cardinal has shot better than 40.0 percent only eight times this year while topping the 50.0 percent mark twice. The totals have been a surprise, given the team s number of talented shooters. Only rookie Grant Verhoeven (4-8 FG, 12 games as a reserve) is shooting at least 50.0 percent....although The Defense Has Been There However, Stanford is holding its opponents to 64.3 points per game, a total that ranks sixth among Pac-12 teams. The opposition is shooting 40.8 percent from the floor, with eight teams held to under 40.0 percent so far this year. STANFORD S RECORD WHEN... 5 MAD DOG BACK ON THE FARM Back in early June, head coach Johnny Dawkins announced the hiring of Mark Madsen as assistant coach. One of the program s most iconic and inspirational players, Madsen will work mainly with the post players. During his career, Madsen garnered All-America honors in each of his final two seasons while leading the Cardinal to four NCAA Tournament appearances, including the 1998 Final Four. A nine-year NBA veteran, Madsen spent six seasons as a member of the Minnesota Timberwolves following a three-year stint with the Los Angeles Lakers, in which he contributed to the franchise s 2001 and 2002 NBA titles. Madsen had spent the last two years on campus, completing coursework toward his MBA at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Known to everyone as Mad Dog for his signature physical and aggressive style of play, Madsen averaged 10.9 points and 7.9 rebounds for his Cardinal career while ranking among the school s top-10 all-time performers in field goal percentage (4th- 58.7), and rebounds (6th - 857). FIERY PREGAME SPEECH KEYS NIT CHAMPIONSHIP RUN Prior to last year s NIT semifinal win against UMass, Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis delivered an inspirational pregame speech inside the Cardinal locker room. The twominute pep talk, organized by the coaching staff as a surprise to the team, instantly became a YouTube phenomenon. By the time Stanford routed Minnesota in the NIT title game three days later, the video had logged over 410,000 views. In early October, the video reached the 1,000,000 mark. Prior to each game, Cardinal players watched a montage of Lewis highlights as part of their pregame preparation. So, you could imagine the shock when the 13-time Pro Bowler and 2000 Super Bowl MVP walked into the room. Here are some lasting quotes from Lewis speech, which has been embraced as a motivational tool by several other Stanford athletic teams. Meanwhile, parts of the speech were even incorporated into the University s official television spot. If tomorrow wasn t promised, what would you give for today? Whatever legacy you are going to leave, leave your legacy. Effort is between you and you. Because I m pissed off... for greatness. STANFORD BASKETBALL IN THE NEWS Excerpts from recent feature stories, game recaps, tweets, columns and blog posts spotlighting Stanford basketball can be found within this section. Rosco Allen Takes Long Road To Stanford by Tom FitzGerald, San Francisco Chronicle Jan. 19, 2013 His first language was Hungarian, and there s a lot about Budapest he misses. He knows how hard it is to find rakott krumpli in Palo Alto. They don t exactly make it here, Rosco Allen said of his favorite dish, which consists of potatoes, smoked Hungarian sausage, eggs, cheese and sour cream. Allen is getting just 13 minutes a game, which explains why his scoring (4.2) and rebounding (2.3) averages are so low. Give him time, and he should make his mark on Pac-12 basketball. Just as his former Bishop Gorman High School teammate, Shabazz Muhammad, is already doing at UCLA. At Stanford, Allen gave a glimpse of what he can do when he scored nine of his season-high 11 points in the final five minutes of a win over Lafayette just after Christmas. He has all the skills of a perimeter player, head coach Johnny Dawkins said. He can put the ball on the floor. He can take it to the basket. He s also a terrific shooter. He s made just one three this year, but that s going to come for him as things start to slow down. Dawkins said it was easy to see the European influence on Allen s game when he saw him play with Gorman and a summer club team in Vegas. A lot of times players over here don t get a well-rounded foundation, Dawkins said. There, the bigs and the perimeter players all do the same drills. Allen is adept enough at ball-handling and passing that he played point guard as a junior in high school. At a camp in Chicago last summer, Oklahoma City Thunder star Kevin Durant told him, I love you, Rosco, because you re like myself. You re like a point forward. Determined Brown The Epitome Of Perseverance by Mark Soltau, Buck/Cardinal Clubhouse and Jan. 17, 2013 Andy Brown has always lived in the present. How else do you rebound from three ACL surgeries on the same knee and still become a starter for the Stanford basketball team? Naturally, there are times he reflects on what could have been. The 6-7, 215-pound senior was a standout at hoops powerhouse Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, Calif., where he played in three state title games, winning two. Then he injured his left knee halfway through his senior year. I would have been the only player in history to play in four state championship games, said Brown. All-state as a junior, Brown was recruited heavily by Arizona, Michigan, San Diego, Stanford, and Utah. He was leaning toward Tucson until head coach Lute Olsen retired, then thought Stanford was the best fit. Little did Brown know how much he would be tested physically and mentally. On his first day of practice in 2009, he tore the same ACL again. Brown redshirted and worked diligently with the Stanford medical and training staff to rehabilitate the knee, then tore his ACL again just prior to the season. He redshirted again, and decided to give basketball one more shot. I definitely do wonder where I d be at now, said Brown. It s tough. This would be my last year. It s pretty crazy. Instead, he s a senior with another year of eligibility remaining. He has already completed a degree in communication and is working on his master s, which he hopes to finish next winter after the season. Mother s Death Stunned Stanford s Powell by Tom FitzGerald, San Francisco Chronicle Jan. 12, 2013 One of the things Dwight Powell s mother stressed to him was to do his best not only for himself but also for those closest to him. She always wanted me to work as hard as I could and try my best to reach my potential, the Stanford basketball standout said, and do it for my team and my family. It got a lot tougher on Sept. 13 when his mother, Jacqueline Weir, died of cancer at a hospital in the Boston suburb of Melrose, Mass. She was 53. Powell, who grew up in Toronto, attended a Canadian national team camp in late August before returning to Boston, where his mother lived. He had no idea how sick she was.
