WADE PHILLIPS (66-49, 7TH YEAR, DAL.) Wade Phillips was named the seventh head coach in Dallas Cowboys history on Feb. 8, Phillips, now in his 32nd year as an NFL coach, has guided his teams to four playoff appearances with only one non-winning season. His first season in Dallas was no exception as the Cowboys tied the franchise record with 13 wins. En route to a 13-3 record, Dallas captured the 20th division title in franchise history. Under Phillips' guidance, the Cowboys sent a league record 13 players to the Pro Bowl. Phillips had head coaching stops with the Denver Broncos and Buffalo Bills. He also served as an interim head coach in New Orleans in 1985 (1-3 record) and Atlanta in 2003 (2-1). The last seven times Phillips has taken over as a head coach or defensive coordinator, his new team has reached the playoffs in his first season. Over the last 19 years as a head coach or coordinator, he has been a part of only four teams with nonwinning records. During that span, his defenses have ranked in the NFL's top-10 nine times. He served as the defensive coordinator for the San Diego Chargers for three seasons before landing in Dallas. He spent two years ( ) as the defensive coordinator in Atlanta. 3 NEW YORK LAST WEEK The New York Giants improved to 6-1 with a comeback road win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Eli Manning passed for 199 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions. Derrick Ward caught a team-high five passes for 43 yards to lead the team through the air while Brandon Jacobs rushed for 47 yards on 18 carries to lead New York on the ground. Mewelde Moore got the Steelers on the board first with a 32-yard rushing touchdown in the first quarter before the Giants answered with three straight field goals by John Carney (26,35,25) through the second quarter to take a 9-7 lead by halftime. Pittsburgh reclaimed the lead in the third quarter when Ben Roethlisberger connected with Nate Washington for a 65-yard toss and catch and a 14-9 Steelers advantage. In the fourth quarter, the Giants trimmed the lead to when Carney s fourth field goal was true from 24 yards out. DALLAS LAST WEEK The Dallas Cowboys rebounded from a two-game losing skid with a 13-9 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. While the Cowboys offense struggled early, Dallas defense was able to hold Tampa Bay s offense to two field goals (38,45) by Matt Bryant in the first quarter. The Cowboys got on board in the second quarter when Nick Folk drilled a 38-yard field goal to bring the score to 6-3. In the closing minutes of the second quarter, Dallas was able to drive 59 yards in 10 plays and take up 2:23 on the clock before Brad Johnson found Roy Williams in the corner of the endzone for a two-yard touchdown grab - his first as a Cowboy - to take a 10-6 lead with one second left before the end of the half. The defensive struggle continued into the second half as the most each team could muster was a field goal each in the third quarter - a 45-yarder by Folk, followed by a 41-yarder by Bryant - to bring the score to 13-9 heading into the fourth quarter. After both teams punted three times through the fourth quarter, the Buccaneers managed to drive to the Dallas 18-yard line on what would be their final drive, but on a fourth-and-5, Jeff Garcia s pass to Jerramy Stevens fell incomplete, allowing the Cowboys to capture the 13-9 win. CLIMBING THE CHARTS Terrell Owens was third on the team with five catches and second with 87 yards with a touchdown at Cleveland (9/7). His numbers allowed him to surpass Keenan McCardell (883) for eighth on the league s all-time receptions list and Steve Largent (13,089) for ninth on the all-time receiving yards list. Despite catching only three passes against Philadelphia (9/15), Owens racked up 89 yards and two touchdowns. His yardage total allowed him to pass Andre Reed (13,198) and move into eighth on the NFL s all-time receiving yards list. He had just two catches for 17 yards at Green Bay (9/21) before tying for the team lead with seven catches for 71 yards (third on the team) against Washington (9/28). Owens caught two passes for 67 yards and a touchdown against Cincinnati (10/5) to become the eighth player in league history to reach 900 career catches. He had four catches for 36 yards at Arizona (10/12), two catches for 31 yards at St. Louis (10/19) and five catches for 33 yards against Tampa Bay (10/26).
