Eureka - the alma mater of Ronald Reagan, the 40th President of the United States - returns two starters and nine letterwinners from last year s team. The Red Devils were picked eighth in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) Preseason Poll THE GANG S ALL HERE Loyola s lineup and rotation has a familiar look, as the Ramblers return four starters and eight of their top nine scorers from last season s 24-win team. Leading scorer and assistman Milton Doyle leads one of the Valley s deepest backcourts, one that also includes CBI MVP Earl Peterson, the school s all-time leading three-point shooter Devon Turk, sophomore Ben Richardson and senior Jeff White. Despite the firepower, Loyola must replace Christian Thomas, who graduated after racking up 1,353 points (18th on Loyola s all-time list) and 684 rebounds (15th) in his illustrious, four-year career. That core group did the heavy lifting last night, with returning players accounting for 73 of the team s 76 points (Maurice Kirby: 3 pts) TEXAS THREE-STEP Having already firmly etched his name in the Loyola record book, sharpshooter Devon Turk is primed for a big senior season. The Houston native knocked down four triples in the CBI clincher against Louisiana-Monroe to break Blake Schilb s ( ) school record for career three-pointers made. Turk s 78 three-point field goals last season were good for second on LU s single-season list and he has made at least one triple in 87 of 100 career games, including 24 of his last 25 games last season. He was outstanding during Loyola s postseason run, drilling 16 treys (3.2 3FGM/gm) at a 46% clip in five CBI games, and enters the season as the Ramblers leading active scorer with 875 points, 125 away from becoming the 41st player in school history to reach the 1,000 career point plateau. Listed below are the active career MVC leaders in threepoint field goals: NAME SCHOOL 3FGM 1. Devon Turk Loyola D.J. Balentine Evansville Ron Baker Wichita State Matt Bohannon 175 * Turk s total includes 65 three-pointers made while Loyola was a member of the Horizon League FROM WAY DOWNTOWN...BANG GAME NOTES One of the nation s most efficient offensive teams last season, Loyola enjoyed a record-setting season from beyond the arc. The Ramblers finished the season with a program-record 224 made trifectas (previous record: 197, ), knocking them down at a 39% clip that was good for 17th in the country. Additionally, its Effective FG% of 53.3% placed LU in the top 35 nationally. Last night, they picked up right where they left off last season, knocking down 8-of- 18 (44%) from the arc in the win over UTSA
3 PORTER MOSER PORTER MOSER Creighton, 1990 Overall Record: At Loyola: vs. Eureka: 0-0 In his 12th season as a head coach and fifth at Loyola University Chicago, Porter Moser is known as a tireless recruiter and master game tactician. A graduate of Benet Academy, Moser is a native of Naperville, Ill. and came to Loyola following a stint as the associate head coach at Saint Louis University under legendary head coach Rick Majerus. Moser and the Ramblers took a big step forward last season, winning 24 games - the third-highest single-season total in program history - and capturing the CBI Championship in Loyola s first postseason appearance in 30 years. The Ramblers also saw their final RPI improve 205 spots from the season, the thirdbiggest improvement in Division I, and their 24 wins were the most by a Chicagoland school since Named one of the top 50 assistant coaches in the nation by Basketball Times in 2009, Moser helped Saint Louis to a overall record during his four years on staff and his recruiting efforts helped land several of the Billikens players that have guided the program to back-to-back NCAA Tournament berths. No stranger to the Missouri Valley Conference, Moser was the head coach at Illinois State from Prior to his stint at Illinois State, Moser compiled a record in three seasons as head coach at Arkansas-Little Rock. Taking over the Trojans program at only 31 years of age, Moser turned a 4-24 team into an squad in one season, the greatest turnaround in Sun Belt Conference history. Moser graduated from Creighton University, where he was a guard for Tony Barone s program, in MOSER YEAR-BY-YEAR YEAR SCHOOL RECORD UALR UALR UALR Illinois State Illinois State Illinois State Illinois State Loyola Loyola Loyola Loyola Loyola 1-0 TOTALS (.481) FABULOUS FRONTRUNNERS The first 20 minutes often set the tone for the game and Loyola did an outstanding job last season protecting leads. In fact, Loyola was 17-1 (.944) when leading or tied at halftime but just 7-12 (.368) last season and (.214) under Moser when trailing at the break. The trend continued last night, as the Ramblers stormed to an 11-point halftime lead in an eventual 12-point win MILT MAKES IT HAPPEN After persevering through an injury-hit season last year, junior guard Milton Doyle is primed for a big season. Doyle got off to an outstanding start last season and was averaging nearly 16 points per game through the Ramblers opening eight contests before suffering a foot injury against Abilene Christian. He missed the next game but was not nearly as effective, averaging just 8.1 ppg in eight games before returning to the sidelines. Doyle sat out 11 Valley games but returned for the regular-season finale against Missouri State and was an integral part of the team s run to the CBI title. In all, Loyola was 19-6 (.760) with Doyle on the floor last season with four of the losses coming to ranked foes WINNING FORMULA An old basketball adage says that defense and rebounding win games and championships and Loyola s season backed that up. As the statistics show, Loyola won when its defense put the clamps on its opponent and it stayed tough on the boards. That formula still seems to hold true, as the Ramblers blazed the nets at a 54% clip and were +3 on the boards versus UTSA FG% OppFG% Opp3FG% Reb Margin PPG Opp PPG Wins (24) Losses (13) THEY SHOOT, THEY SCORE, THEY WIN One of the things that Loyola prides itself on is its offensive efficiency and the Ramblers shot over 47% as a team overall and over 39% from the three-point line last season. Why is it important? Loyola went 22-3 (.880) last season when shooting a higher percentage than its opponent but just and are 6-59 (.092) under Moser - when losing the shooting battle. In addition, Loyola went a perfect 13-0 last season when shooting over 50% from the floor. The Ramblers checked all those boxes last night, outshooting UTSA 54-43% in their season-opening win GONE IN 30 SECONDS One of the noticeable rule changes in NCAA men s basketball this season is the change to a 30-second shot clock. Loyola got a little taste of playing competitive games with the shorter clock last year, as the CBI was one of the postseason tournaments that experimented with the 30-second clock. One of the more methodical offensive teams in the country, the Ramblers averaged only two more possessions per game despite the quicker shot clock during the CBI but recorded 72 possessions last night, a number that equaled their season-high from the campaign (McKendree, 72) SHARING THE WEALTH One of the things that Loyola did extremely well last season was share the ball and get points from many different places. That unselfishness carried over into the postseason, where Loyola had four players average double figures and a fifth finish at 9.6 ppg. Again, the same recipe provided success for the Ramblers last night, as the team recorded 19 assists on 26 field goals and placed four in double figures with a fifth tallying eight points THIS IS HOW MONTEL DOES IT GAME NOTES Forward Montel James had a terrific rookie campaign, finishing third on the team in scoring (9.4 ppg) and second in rebounding (4.3) while shooting 53% from the floor and leading the team with 23 blocked shots while giving the Ramblers a presence on both ends in the paint. He was terrific down the stretch last season, averaging 13.0 ppg on 12-of-16 shooting (75%) in two Arch Madness games, and reached double figures in three CBI games, including both games of the championship series. James has been outstanding in both season-opening games, averaging 16.5 ppg and 7.5 rpg in his two LU lid-lifters after posting 14 points (4-6 FG, 6-8 FT) and seven boards last night

A weapon off the bench the first half of the season, Peterson was inserted into the starting lineup shortly after the injury to Milton Doyle and the move paid immediate dividends. Peterson was terrific down the stretch and continued his stellar play into the CBI, where he scored in double digits in each of the last four games, averaging 13.2 ppg on 59% field goal shooting en route to earning tournament MVP honors. He got his season off to a good start, posting 11 pts (7-7 FTs) and six assists last night vs UTSA WINDY CITY WINNERS Not only did Loyola put together one of the winningest seasons in program history last season but it also doubled as one of the best seasons by any Chicagoland team in recent memory. The Ramblers 24 wins were the third-most in program history and most in three decades (1985). Additionally, it marked the first time that a Chicago area Division I program (Loyola, DePaul, Northwestern,, Chicago State) won as many as 24 games in a season since won 24 games and made the NCAA Tournament 11 years ago (2004). Loyola s most successful seasons are below: YEAR RECORD POSTSEASON NCAA Champions NCAA Sweet CBI Champions EN GARDE FOR LOYOLA S GUARDS The strength of this year s Loyola team seems to be with its deep, talented and diverse group of guards. Five-deep with proven Division I players, the group of Milton Doyle, Earl Peterson, Ben Richardson, Devon Turk and Jeff White accounted for 34.6 ppg last season, a number that could be even higher this year. Add highly regarded transfer Tyson Smith (Southern Idaho) to that mix and LU has a group that can play many different styles COOL AS THE OTHER SIDE OF THE PILLOW One of the traits of a successful team is its ability to find ways to win, particularly close games, and Loyola was able to turn the corner that way last season. Capped by its comefrom-behind, win in the CBI finale, Loyola was 9-1 (.900) last season in games decided by five points or less, a dramatic improvement over the 8-20 (.286) mark over the previous four seasons NO PROBLEM WITH NON-D1 S Tonight s game with Division III Eureka is nothing new as the Ramblers have faced at least one non-division I school in 10 of the last 11 years. Loyola has won each of the last seven such games and are 21-1 (.955) against non-division I schools since 1990, with those 21 wins coming by an average of 22.3 ppg. The lone setback was an defeat to Rockhurst seven years ago to the date (Nov. 14, 2008) FORCING TEAMS TO LOOK FOR PLAN B While a team s offense has a tendency to ebb and flow, a team s defense can be a constant. Last season, one thing Loyola was extremely effective at doing was limiting the opposition s top scoring option. In fact, the Ramblers held their opponent s top scorer below his scoring average 27 times in 35 games (first two games excluded due to lack of statistics), including four times in five CBI games SPURTABILITY With so many dynamic offensive players on the floor, Loyola has shown the ability to string baskets together and score in spurts. The Ramblers posted runs of 10-2 and 12-1 in the first half of their exhibition game against Lewis and was at it again last night, opening the game with a 15-2 spurt and using a 14-2, second-half run to open a 20-point lead in the win over UTSA

The league is loaded with experience and talent and promises to be one of the most competitive conferences in the country. In fact, all five members of the Preseason All-MVC team and three of the four Honorable Mention All-MVC picks are seniors, with Milton Doyle being the one exception. The Ramblers return 78% of their scoring from last season, second to Evansville (92.6%) among MVC teams, as The Valley looks to build on a season that saw it record the highest postseason winning percentage of any conference in the country (14-3,.824) FROM BLUE VALLEY TO MISSOURI VALLEY, RICHARDSON AND CUSTER RETED Loyola welcomed Iowa State transfer Clayton Custer to the program this offseason. Custer, who will sit out the season in accordance with NCAA residency requirements, was high school teammates with current Rambler Ben Richardson at Blue Valley Northwest in suburban Kansas City. The duo went 94-6 (.940) during their high school career and advanced to the state title game in each of their four seasons (winning two). Richardson played an integral role in Loyola s success down the stretch, starting 12 of the final 13 games. He made winning plays in crunch time in road wins over Missouri State and Drake and tied an Arch Madness record by going 5-for-5 from behind the arc in LU s quarterfinal win over Indiana State SIGNED, SEALED AND DELIVERED 3FG PERCENTAGE GAME NOTES With four seniors on the current roster, Loyola began to prepare for the future as it signed a pair of guards to a National Letter of Intent earlier this week. The Ramblers welcomed 6-foot-4 Cameron Satterwhite (Gilbert, Ariz.) and 6-foot-3 Bruno Skokna (Zagreb, Croatia) into the family, with the duo eligible for competition at the start of the season. Satterwhite is a high-flying guard who averaged over 18 ppg last season and is ranked as the No. 2 prospect in the state of Arizona while Skokna capped an outstanding summer by finishing as the second-leading scorer at the European U-18 Championship in Greece, pouring in 17.2 ppg for his Croatian side
