2 PG2 DALHART TEXAN Basketball Preview, Tueday, November 28, 2017 Lady Wolves team combines youth, talent, and experience BY BILL KELLY Editor The Dalhart Lady Wolves will be looking to make another trip to the playoffs for the basketball season. The team will have experienced juniors and seniors along with three talented freshmen and fans should be ready for another great season from the Lady Wolves. Anthony Catherall is the head coach of the Lady Wolves, and he is joined on the bench by Lida Trusler and Kent Morrison. Trusler is returning as an assistant after taking a break from coaching for a couple of years and will coach the JV team, while Morrison coaches the 9th grade team. Catherall has several experienced players returning from last year s team. Senior Karley Orman was All-District last season and has played on varsity all four years in high school. Orman will definitely be the team leader this season. Other seniors include Sidney Fahnert, Brittany Johnson, and Emily Thelander. All three return from last year s varsity team and bring additional leadership and experience. Junior Hanna Wilkerson also returns from last year s team. She is a good ball handler and is a threat from three-point range. There are also three freshmen on the team, and Catherall believes they will contribute big minutes on varsity. Kaeona Marquez has been starting for the Lady Wolves at point guard early in the season, and Bethany Berngen and Cristal Davila have also been playing quite a bit. Berngen is the tallest player on the team and gives them an inside presence. They all bring something to the table that we need. Catherall said. The base offense for Dalhart will remain the same, but Catherall did say that they will try to add a few things that might fit the team. You have to get into the season a little to find things that work the best. Catherall said. The Lady Wolves will still play primarily man-to-man defense, but once again Catherall mentioned that the team would try some other looks and try to get the players in position to be successful. With three freshmen on the team, the Lady Wolves are at least somewhat in a rebuilding mode. However, there is quite a bit of talent on the team, and there are play- ers on the team who know what it takes to be successful to go along with the inexperienced players. If we can mesh these two factors together we ll be ok, Catherall said. We just want to be competitive in our district and secure a favorable playoff matchup. Fans of the Lady Wolves should expect to watch a talented team this season, and only time will tell just how far that talent will take them. 3 DALHART TEXAN Basketball Preview, Tueday, November 28, 2017 PG3 Golden Wolves hope for playoff run with new coach BY BILL KELLY Editor The Dalhart Golden Wolves haven t had much luck in basketball in recent years, but that showed signs of changing towards the end of last season as a talented group of younger players began to gel as a team. That group will join with a new head coach this season and will provide fans with some memorable action this season. Stratton Frye was hired as Dalhart s new head coach over the summer. He inherits a team that returns almost all of its starters, and indeed most of the team, from last season. Alex Brewer returns as a senior starter, and Zayne Lewis will also provide senior leadership for the team. Two juniors, Hugo Davila and Dyson Day, were starters last year as sophomores. Day helps run the offense and is a good outside shooter, while Davila gives the Wolves a presence inside. Day was named Honorable Mention All-District last season. Collin Smith is another junior who is moving up to varsity after being one of the top players on the JV team last season. There are also six sophomores. Most of them played quite a few minutes last season, but Frye said that he still considers some of them to be newcomers. Two of the sophomores, Zach Barsalou and Robby Devries, were named Co-Newcomers of the year last year on the All- District team. Another sophomore, Brandon Samaniego, was also named Honorable Mention All-District last year as a freshman. Xaviar Hammett will be on varsity as a freshman, just as he was earlier this year for football. Frye said that Hammett will have the chance to get some minutes for the team. He is a great kid with a bright future, Frye said. Frye expects all his players to get quality minutes. They will all be huge contributors on different nights. On offense, expect the Golden Wolves to change to the Runnin Wolves as Frye plans to have the team stay in transition as much as possible. We are going to get up and down and be exciting to watch. Frye said. I have scorers all over the floor so the more shots we are able to get up, the better situation we will be in. When the Wolves do play in a half-court offense, they will use motion principles and have specific sets to get the ball to the players who are hitting on any particular night. Frye plans to use multiple defenses to give opponents different looks and keep them confused, which will also make the Wolves harder to scout. Frye said that that the team was able to do that due to the players knowledge of basketball. They pick things up quickly and understand each other s games well. Frye said. Frye is excited about being in Dalhart. I have been surrounded by support, Frye said. Kids and their parents have bought in already and the community support so far has been outstanding. Me and my team at home (wife Paige and son Beckem) feel all the love from everyone and we could not be in a better situation. As for expectations, Frye said that he doesn t want to put a ceiling on the team. We have high expectations inside our locker room, but we understand that it is a process and we have to get better every day. Frye said. This group of kids works extremely hard and they deserve some success. Developing a winning culture and mindset is high on our list of things to get done. The Wolves showed in their first game against Class 5A Dumas that they will be a fun team to watch. Dalhart blew out the Demons by 33 points, and that was with some of their players still playing football. As Frye said, On the nights we all click, we will be a scary team to play. The Wolves should have a great chance to break their postseason drought and make a run at the playoffs this season. The Dalhart Golden Wolves basketball team. 4 PG4 DALHART TEXAN Basketball Preview, Tueday, November 28, 2017 Lady Tigers ready for a shot at district title BY BILL KELLY Editor The Hartley Lady Tigers, many of whom are fresh off another trip to state in cross country, will be looking to make it to the postseason in basketball as well as they begin the season. Head Coach Dedra Hill is returning to lead Hartley once again. Hill has three starters returning from last season. Kyllie Richardson and Emma Detwiler are both seniors who give the Lady Tigers a strong presence inside the paint, while Kelly Wieck was one of Hartley s starting guards last season. Richardson was the Offensive MVP for District 3-1A, and Detwiler was the Defensive MVP for the district, while Wieck was also named to the All-District team, so they will give the Lady Tigers strong leadership and the skills to go with it. Hartley also has three players who gained valuable playing time off the bench last season and will be expected to make an impact this year. Hill said that Khodee Gomez, Melissa Mize, and Mariana Mendoza should all make contributions on the court this season. There is also one freshman who Hill expects to step up and start this season. Mattie Leaton is a freshman guard. She is athletic and has the skills to step into this role, Hill said of Leaton. The Lady Tigers will run basically the same offense that they ran last year, although Hill did say she might mix in a couple of new things as well. On defense, they will use a combination of man and zone defenses. Our expectations are to make the playoffs, Hill said. We know we have some strong competitors out there but with valuable court time from our newcomers we feel like we still have a shot to finish in the top two in our district. 5 DALHART TEXAN Basketball Preview, Tueday, November 28, 2017 PG5 Hartley s new head coach hoping for run at playoffs BY BILL KELLY Editor The Hartley Tigers were in the midst of making a run at the playoffs last year when an injury to a key player put an end to those hopes. A new head coach is looking to return the Tigers to the postseason. Lee Parker is taking on the head coaching responsibilities this season after being an assistant at Hartley previously. He will be assisted by Hayden Smith. Parker has several solid players returning to the team from last season. Alex Torrez was one of the best players in the district last year. Also returning to the team are Ethan Vincent, Aidan Weber, and Edgar Chavira. The team also has some very good new players this year. Kholten Ellis is the starting point guard, and has already shown his abilities in Hartley s first few games. Jacob Drew, Jorge Chavira, and Oscar Navarro were also mentioned by Parker as having the potential to make an impact as the season goes on. The Tigers will be using a motion offense this season, running it out of different sets. They will also run as much as they can, pushing the ball up the court when they have the chance for a fast break. On defense, they will use man-to-man when possible, but will switch to the zone when needed. Parker is excited about the opportunity to coach at Hartley, and believes the team will get better as the season progresses and make a run at the playoffs when district play begins. I have great kids, Parker said. The work hard and give their best effort in practice and in the games. Coach Smith and I feel privileged to coach such a great group of kids.
