1 VETERANS MEMORIAL MIDDLE SCHOOL JUNE 21, 2017 Mrs. Renee Kotsianas, Principal Mr. James Carr, Assistant Principal Mr. Paul Walski, Assistant Principal The 2017 Lady Stangs Softball Team completed the season at 8-7. They had some tough losses throughout the year but the girls always stayed positive and worked hard. They improved as the season went on and gained valuable experience for next year. Coach Graham would like to thank the 8th grade girls for their commitment to the program and wish them the best of luck next year in high school. Eight girls will return from this year's team so the future looks bright!! The VMMS Baseball Team concluded an outstanding season, finishing with a 10-5 record. The Mustangs were led by All- Stars Max Cala & Kyle Kohlmann. Cala, a three-year starter, provided key hits, while leading the team defensively behind the plate. Kohlmann was a threat all over the diamond, leading the team in hits & home runs, while also picking up 3 wins on the mound. Other impact players were 8th graders Joe Gioia, TJ McArthur, Cole Manfro, Ruben Lizardi, Aiden Patella, Reese Hackett, Brandon Hulsart & Ryan Glinka. The Stangs also had a host of underclassmen contribute to the team's success, led by Jack Flood, Gavin Atkinson, Joe Cordi, Evan Gillen, Jace Hibbard, Brady Leach, Anthony Martino, Ryan Mulcahey, Joey Nolan & Ryan Turner. The Mustangs Boys and Girls Track had a great final showing at the Meet of Champions. Robby Mullin placed 4th in the mile and ran his best race of the season. Akhi Barksdale smoked the 100 meter sprint running one of his best times of the season. Lauren Assante finished up her great season with an awesome performance in the shot put, and Alyssa Betz had phenomenal throws in the discus. Nagid Lovett placed 4th in the high jump. Kailyn Kelly tied the meet record and took home a silver medal in the girl s high jump. Lynsey Davis cruised her way into the finals of the 100 meter hurdles. She crushed the finals, and is in the top 5 fastest hurdlers in the entire county. Finally, Noel Fullman was lightning on the track, she won the 100 meter sprint with a final lean at the finish line. She is the Ocean County Champion, and officially the fastest girl in all of Ocean County. The boys finished up with a record of 5-4, while the girls finished with a record of 4-5. Both teams started the season slow, but finished extremely strong.
2 MATH TEAM COMPETITION: Members of the 7th and 8th grade math team competed in the Ocean County Math League Competition at Georgian Court University. Congratulations to Hannah Richardson and Elizabeth Herzig for being team high scorers! MANASQUAN RESERVOIR CLASS TRIP Mrs. Rizzolo's class visited the Manasquan Reservoir and Environmental Center on Wednesday June 7th. They took a pontoon ride on the reservoir where they observed wildlife in its natural habitat. A great time was had by all! V.O.I.C.E.S The Jersey Shore Animal Center along with their 4 legged friends sent a special note of thanks to our V.O.I.C.E.S Club. Keep up the good work and thanks for making the world a better place. You re PAWsome! The Club collected various items for the animals and donated it to the Jersey Shore Animal Center. Their act of kindness was much appreciated. GI GO Fund Math Project VMMS staff supported the GI GO Fund by raising money to help support our veterans. Mrs. McFadden's DTI math students worked on a project that tied together math literacy, data analysis, and financial planning. They figured out the cost of housing and college for returning veterans as well as the amount of funding that is needed. STEM RECYCLES: Students in Ms. Clinton s STEM created Promotion caps using recycled materials.
3 DRAMA PRODUCTION: Under the direction of Mrs. LaFragola and Ms. Hammell students presented Dr. Evil and the Basket of Kittens. The play was written by Brian D. Taylor and was about a mix up with the baskets and how Dr. Evil learns to LOVE! The show was a huge success and Mrs. LaFragola and Ms. Hammell would like to applaud and show their LOVE to the entire Drama Team for all of their hard work! TALENT SHOW: This year Vets presented a wonderful Talent Show for the school. There were many students from different grade levels who were extremely excited to show off their impressive talents. The students did a fantastic job and the audience had a great time. The show was dedicated to Mrs. Abramo who worked on the Talent Show for years. Her son, Vinnie Abramo, sang in her honor. All the proceeds from the ticket sales accumulated to $ and will be donated to the American Heart Association in Mrs. Abramo's name. CAREER DAY: Students from eighth grade homerooms 104 and 105 hosted a Career Day in the library. Professionals representing various industries such as Real Estate, Heating and Air Conditioning, Dental Hygienist, Hairstylist, Nursing, Video Game Designing and an Entrepreneur came to discuss their job qualifications and responsibilities. Students were given the opportunity to ask questions and quickly learned that all jobs presented required excellent communication skills and continued education which enables them to excel at their careers. It was an enlightening experience for all.
