Charlotte appeared in their first ever NCAA Tournament and Georgia Tech also made a first round appearance. Florida International participated in the WNIT. Old Dominion will faced WNIT participants and fellow conference rivals, Delaware, twice. The Fightin Blue Hens have made WNIT appearances the last two season after making their first trip to the NCAA Tournament in THE REVENGE FACTOR: Here s a look at Old Dominion has done the second time around against an opponent its suffered a CAA loss to: A TALE OF TWO COURTS: Old Dominion is 7-6 on the road this season, while on the other hand, the Lady Monarchs are a perfect 12-0 at home at the Ted Constant Convocation Center in Norfolk. The last time ODU reached 100 points was at the ODU Fieldhouse against Virginia Commonwealth as the Lady Monarchs cruised to a victory on January 4, That season was also the last time Old Dominion had multiple 100 points victories. MORE POINTS TO MAKE: The Lady Monarch tallied 53 points by the intermission of February 12th s game against Hofstra, the most points netted by this year s squad in the first 20 minutes. It was the most points scored in the first half of play by ODU since scoring 60 in the first half of the win over Virginia Commonwealth on January 4, The 105 total points scored was the most by the Lady Monarchs this season and the most since the previously mentioned VCU win. Additionally, senior Max Nhassengo reset her career-high for the third time this season scoring 27 points. TOWSON SCARES: Old Dominion and Hofstra, who were No. 1 & No. 2 in the league at the time, both had thrillers against the Towson Tigers a few short weeks ago, a squad that had not picked up a CAA win at the time of competition. Against Old Dominion, senior guard Max Nhassengo clinched the game during the final 22 seconds converting three of her four free throw attempts. The Tigers led by two, 29-27, in the closest meeting ever between the two schools. Old Dominion entered the contest averaging 39.0 points victories. The Tigers added another scare a game later against Hofstra. The Pride s freshman forward Lizanne Murphy scored the game-winning lay-up with 15 seconds remaining with junior guard Charlotte Baldrey-Chourio hitting three-of-four free throws to clinch the win. Hofstra led by as many as 12 until Towson managed a comeback, taking a lead with 36 seconds remaining. The latest one was release on February 16th. If the NCAA Tournament were being held today, its predicted the Lady Monarchs would be the seventh seed in the Mideast Region facing 10th seeded Montana in Missoula. Last month, Old Dominion was an eighth seed in the Mideast Region facing ninth seeded TCU, in Durham, NC. In his first prediction, the Lady Monarchs were a 13-seed facing a familiar opponent...rutgers...in the Mideast Region in New Mexico. His second prediction had ODU as a seven seed facing 10th seeded Richmond, a former CAA rival in Minnesota. Here s how the rest of the bracket according to Charlie Creme looks: EAST MIDEAST MIDWEST WEST 1. Connecticut 1. Duke 1. Tennessee 1. Texas 2. LSU 2. Purdue 2. Kansas St. 2. Penn State 3. 9 SHE GOT WHAT SHE WANTED: When the media approached senior guard Max Nhassengo about the notion of possibly becoming CAA Player of the Year, Nhassengo replied, I want to be CAA Defensive Player of the Year..because its my defense that creates my offense. Her defensive definitely shined against George Mason as the Mozambique native limited Patriot leading scorer and First Team All-CAA member Jen Derevjanik to just one point at the half and 2-of-13 total from the field in ODU s victory in the first meeting. YOU WIN SOME, YOU LOSE SOME: The Lady Monarchs went from the largest margin of victory in two years to suffering just their 11th conference loss in CAA history in mid-january as Old Dominion defeated Towson, 87-34, on January 15th and then fell to Hofstra, 72-74, three days later on January 18th. Against the Tigers, Old Dominion shot a then season-best 56.5 percent from the floor and was led by a then career-high 25 points from senior Max Nhassengo. The 53-point margin of victory was the largest since an win over the Towson to open the season. The Lady Monarchs then fell to Hofstra to drop to all-time versus CAA opponents. Old Dominion has now fell in at least one CAA contest in three of the last four years. However, the Lady Monarchs have only dropped more than one CAA match-up in a season twice in 13 seasons in the league. Before January 18th s loss, Hofstra was one of five teams that had yet to defeat the Lady Monarchs in the all-time series. HOT SHOTS: The Lady Monarchs were certainly hitting their shots in February 22nd s victory over Virginia Commonwealth as they hit their best field goal and free throw percentages of the year. Old Dominion shot a blistering 58.1 (36-of-62) from the floor, the fifth time this season the Lady Monarchs shot 50 percent or better. Additionally, Old Dominion hit a seasonbest 88 percent from the charity stripe (22-of-25) with three Lady Monarchs going perfect from the line and no Lady Monarch missing more than one shot. THE BENCH: Old Dominion got the most out of its bench on Superbowl Sunday afternoon in a victory over Drexel. The Lady Monarch reserves netted a season-high 32 points, replacing their previous high of 25 in the first meeting against Towson, sparked by a season-high 18 points by Sherida Triggs. Triggs netted 10 points by the half, shooting a perfect 5-of-5 in the first stanza. Fan favorite Marianthi Koukouvinou got to see an ample amount of time at the point tying her season-high with six off of two three pointers. LAWONA S 20 GIVES ODU 20: Sophomore Lawona Davis had a career night as she helped the Lady Monarchs collected its 20th win of the season. Davis poured in a career-high 23 points on 10-of-12 shooting fromthe floor on February 26th in a win over James Madison. Davis became the fifth Lady Monarchs this season to collect 20 or more points in a game. TWENTY-TWENTY: Back on February 22nd against Virginia Commonwealth, two Lady Monarchs scored 20 or more points in a single game this season. Senior guard Max Nhassengo put up 22 points, while senior Monique Coker collected 20 to account for 44.2 percent of the Old Dominion offense in its victory over the Rams. WATCH OUT FOR SPENCE: Watch out for senior Myriah Spence if she s having a shooting slump...because the next game, she ll get you. Twice, the Espanola, New Mexico native has come off an 0-for slump to put up big numbers. Spence went 0-for-8 in the first meeting with the George Mason Patriots back in January, but produced 13 points in the next game against UNC- Wilmington. Then on back on February 5th, Spence was 0-of-4 from the field at Towson, but came back to the court to net a season-high 25 points at Drexel three days later. HEAR ME ROAR: Rookie Tish Lyons recorded her first double-double of her career with 12 points and a game-high 12 boards, both career-highs for the Hampton Roads native, against Hofstra. Lyons, coming off the bench and playing 26 minutes, was also a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line. The freshman became the third Lady Monarch this season to have a double digit scoring and rebounding performance. MORE ON MO: The UNC-Wilmington Seahawks managed a rare feat in their first meeting. The Seahawks held Lady Monarch leading scorer Monique Coker scoreless in the first half of play. However, Coker s scoreless first stanza turned into her 10th double-double and 22nd of her career by the end of the game. Although the 6-1 senior captain ending the game connecting on 2-of-6 from the field, she connected on all six of her free throw attempts. Coker also managed to grab a game-high 11 boards. The Delaware Fightin Blue Hens also managed the same feat as the Seahawks, keeping Coker off the scoreboard in the first half. MO S TRIPLE DOUBLE: Senior forward Monique Coker is the double-double machine for the Lady Monarchs having racked up double figures in both points and rebounds in 11 games thus far in Coker did manage the triple-double against the Blue Hens of Delaware back on January 11th, but one stat is something head coach Wendy Larry would not like her captain to repeat. Coker poured in 10 points and had a game-high 12 rebounds, but also collected 10 of ODU s 27 turnovers in the victory. NOTHING BUT NET: Redshirt freshman Shantel Wilson started the season 0-8 from the free throw line, but when she finally sank her first shot of the season from the charity stipe against Delaware, she couldn t miss. Wilson proceeded to make all four of her free throws in the game. Wilson also had impressive stats from the line against Virginia Commonwealth on Sunday as Old Dominion had its best performance from the charity stripe this season. The Washington D.C. native went 5-of-6 as the Lady Monarchs hit 88 percent from the line. MUXIRI RETURNS: Junior forward Paula Muxiri, who was academically redshirted the first seven games of the season, returned to the line-up against Florida International on December 15th. After a successful fall semester, Muxiri was cleared to play just hours before the game. In her first appearance of the season, Muxiri played 15 minutes off the bench going 2-for-4, including a three-pointer, for five points. ONE WAS FOR THE MONEY: With a lay-up and her first points of the game against Charlotte on November 30th, senior forward Monique Coker became the 23rd Lady Monarch to net 1,000 career points. Coker is beginning to make her move up the charts now, already moving up five spots on the all-time chart. All-Time Leading Scorers 15.) 1,483 - Hamchetou Maiga (98-02) 16.) 1,408 - Angela Cotman (76-80) 17.) 1,382 - Lucienne Berthieu (98-02) 18.) 1,347 - Monique Coker (2000-present) 19.) 1,291 - Kim McQuarter ( ) 20.) 1,096 - Shonda DeBerry ( ) 21.) 1,085 - Sharron Francis ( ) 22.) 1,050 - Rhonda Rompola ( ) 23.) 1,023 - Aubry Eblin ( ) LADY MONARCHS SHOOT DOWN THE PATRIOTS: Old Dominion gave George Mason its largest loss to date back on the afternoon of January 25th with a 23-point victory, The Lady Monarchs held the Patriots to a first-half season-low 18 points and also limited the CAA second best three-point shooting team to seven percent from beyond the arc. Also defensively, the Lady Monarchs held leading scorer Jen Derevjanik to one point at the half. Derevjanik, who entered the game averaging over 19 points per contest, finished the game with 10 points, but was held to 2-of-13 shooting from the field. MO HAS GMU S NUMBER: Monique Coker has had the Patriots number in their last four meetings. Coker has notched a double-double in each the last four meetings with George Mason, which included a 16-point, 14-rebound effort in the last meeting back on January 25th and 22 points and 17 rebounds, tying her career-high, in their last meeting last Sunday.
