Fullerton shot 59 percent from the floor including 64 percent in the second half. Jer Vaughn Johnson (23 points, 7 rebounds) and Orane Chin (21 points, 6 rebounds) dominated inside and the Titans got major production from the backcourt in Devon Peltier (19 points), Roger Guardia off the bench (14 points including 4-for-4 treys) and Perry Webster (10 assists with no turnovers). NO EXPERIENCE: With no two-years or more lettermen, the Titans field a roster that has a total of only nine seasons of Div. I experience (Johnson 3, Hardy 2, Chin 2, Williams 1 and Peltier 1) and only four of those are at Fullerton (Johnson, Chin, Williams and Peltier, 1 each). With Johnson and Hardy sidelined, the Titans took only eight healthy scholarship players to Oahu with a total of four seasons of Div. I experience. THE COACH: Bob Burton is in his eighth season at Cal State Fullerton and career. He has the most victories at the Div. I level and trails only Alex Omalev ( in 12 years) all-time. Burton s winning percentage of.565 trails only Bobby Dye (.583, ). He is 0-1 vs. Arizona. ROAD WARRIORS: Under Bob Burton, the Titans have made dramatic strides as a road team. In the past six seasons plus this year, they are (.509) away from Titan Gym (includes on neutral floors). For the previous 10 seasons ( thru ) the combined road record was (.207). With a 3-11 mark in his first season ( ), Burton s total CSF road record is (.477).

2 TITAN BASKETBALL... pg. 2 FRIENDLY CONFINES: Under Bob Burton, the Titans are (.688) in Titan Gym including 34-3 (.919) in non-conference games. Fullerton has won its last 12 and 31 of its last 32 home non-conference games with the exception an loss to Wright State on Dec. 22, Fullerton s all-time Div. I Titan Gym record is (.639). Fullerton also is 1-8 in regular season home games at the Anaheim Convention Center. ABOUT THE WILDCATS: Arizona is 7-1 after an rout of Oklahoma on Sunday. The Wildcats only loss was to Kansas on Nov. 27, in Las Vegas. Second-year Head Coach Sean Miller has seen 6-foot-8 sophomore forward Derrick Williams lead the team in scoring in every game, averaging 20 points and 7.3 rebounds. He is from La Mirada High School, which is about 10 miles as the crow flies from the Cal State Fullerton campus. Guard Kyle Fogg (8.1 ppg and 3.6 apg) is from Brea-Olinda HS, which is about two miles away. Arizona is shooting 52 percent from the floor, 40.6 percent from the 3-point line and 77 percent at the foul line and outrebounding its foes by more than 11 boards per game. PAC-10 HISTORY: Fullerton is 4-22 all-time vs. the current Pac-10 alignment with all of those games except one (75-55 W vs. Washington on Dec. 19, 1986, in Titan Gym) occurring on the Pac-10 floors. The other three wins have come at UCLA, Oregon State and Arizona. The records: 1-0 vs. Washington; 1-1 vs. Oregon State (1-0 NIT); 1-3 vs. Arizona; 1-9 vs. UCLA; 0-1 vs. Cal (NIT); 0-2 vs. Arizona State (0-1 NIT); and 0-3 vs. USC and Oregon. Only twice has Fullerton played more than one Pac-10 team in the same season: Washington, UCLA and Cal in and Arizona State and USC in , Bob Burton s first year at Fullerton. SERIES HISTORY: Arizona leads the series, 3-1, with all four games played in Tucson. Fullerton won on Dec. 1, 1983, 67-66, behind 31 points by Leon Wood, who returned to where he played his freshman season. In the last meeting on Nov. 28, 2007, Arizona cruised to a win. Fullerton hit only 2 of its first 10 shots with five of them blocked (9 total in the game). Fullerton shot only 34 percent for the game with Josh Akognon getting 19 points on 6 of 18 shooting. Arizona shot 62 percent. KEY STATISTIC: Fullerton has outrebounded its opponent three times this year and each occurrence coincided with a victory. The edge in boards was in a 3-point win at San Diego, in a 10-point home win over Cal State Bakersfield and in Saturday s win. KEY STATISTIC NUMBER TWO: Fullerton has been cold and hot at the foul line. An 11-for-24 effort was fatal in an opening 3-point loss to Central Michigan and a streak of 2 made in 7 attempts down the stretch at Montana kept the Titans behind. Conversely, the Titans made 33 of 37 in beating Cal State Bakersfield and the difference in the win at USD came at the line -- Fullerton was 18-for-23 while USD was 13-for-22. J. Seeley arrived from UC Berkeley and Kwame Vaughn is from San Francisco. Amoke will have one year to play and the others will have two. Boeheim Look-a-like -- If you have noticed a resemblance between Fullerton Coach Bob Burton and Syracuse Coach Jim Boeheim, you are not the first. NBA Connections -- The Titans have sent 11 former players into the NBA. Bobby Brown was the 11th, playing the last two seasons with four teams, and is now playing in Poland. But the Titans still have a varied representation, even after former assistant coach Mark Warkentien s contract as general manager at Denver was not renewed in August. Leon Wood is the most visible as a veteran referee. Cedric Ceballos is the entertainment coordinator at home games for the Phoenix Suns. Former manager Wes Wilcox is director of player personnel for the Cleveland Cavaliers. Former administrative assistant Eric Glass is on the video crew of the Miami HEAT. And on the media side, Bruce Bowen is an ESPN commentator and Fullerton alum Marc Stein is ESPN s NBA beat reporter. Colorful Stringtown -- Junior Orlando Brown s home town of Stringtown, Oklahoma, has a population of less than 500 but has a colorful history. It was the site of the first killing of a police officer in 1932 by Clyde Barrow of Bonnie and Clyde fame. This time it was a 3-game affair over four days -- the Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic. Due to injuries to big men Jer Vaughnn Johnson and Andre Hardy, the Titans took a short roster to Oahu including only eight scholarship players among 10 healthy players. Not surprising, rebounding was a problem for Fullerton in the opener but the unexpected shortcoming was a brutal night at the free-throw line. The Titans made only 1 of 7 in the first half and only 10 of 17 in the second period of a game that came down to the final minute. Fullerton led the entire first half, the biggest lead 11 points at with 4:40 to go. CMU finished the half with a 7-0 run to get close and opened the second half with an 8-0 spurt for a lead. The Titans would come back and lead by as many as 6 points, the last time at with 11:14 to play. The Chippewas came back to tie and then take a 5-point lead at with 5:53 remaining. Fullerton caught up at 67 at 1:01 on a 3- point basket by Isiah Umipig and then had a chance to win when the Titans defense forced a turnover. But Perry Webster was called for a charge with 5 seconds left and the ball turned over. CMU guard Trey Zeigler brought the ball up the middle, passed to the right side to Jalin Thomas and the latter drilled a 3- point field goal as the buzzer sounded. Two years earlier, Josh Akognon led Fullerton to a win over Hawai i by setting a Stan Sheriff Center record with 41 points. But on this night his heir apparent, Devon Peltier, had a miserable shooting night, failing to make a 3-pointer in 7 tries and going 1-for-12 overall, and the Titans saw a valiant effort evaporate in the final 3 minutes. A pair of free throws by Sedric Martin tied the game at with 3:39 to play. But the Titans would not score again and Hiram Thompson tallied 9 of his 18 points to lead Hawaii to its second of what would become three wins and a tourney title. For the second night, the Titans jumped on top early. The biggest lead was 6 poins at with 11:41 to play as Orane Chin hit a jumper for his 10th and 11th points of the young game. But Hawaii went on a 15-3 run to turn around the 6-point edge which prevailed at halftime, Fullerton would catch up at 50, 52 and 54 before Hawaii used an 8-0 rn for a lead. But back came the Titans and six unanswered points capped by Martin s free throws forged the tie at 70. Eventual tourney MVP Thompson made two free throws to break the tie and then a Zane Johnson trey and another by Thompson made it and the Titans had to start fouling. Chin ended with a career-high 27 points on his way to all-tournament honors. There were barely 100 spectators in the building and, unfortunately for the Titans, one of them was Steve Jurich, who developed a back problem and joined Johnson and Hardy on the big-man bench. That left Fullerton with only 9 players and probably the smallest starting lineup in the nation at 5-11, 6-7 and three guys at 6-1. Orlando Brown started at what amounted to power forward and Isiah Umipig went form backup point guard to starting small forward. Needless to say, the Titans didn t run a regular offense and relied on their creativity and defense to battle the taller Bobcats, who were led by veterans Bobby Howard and Erik Rush. Devon Peltier found his shooting touch and Orane Chin had another big offensive game and the Titans hung with Montana State until the final minute. A third good start by Fullerton eventually produced a lead with 6:44 to go in the half. But Montana State closed with a 21-9 surge for a 4-point halftime lead. Fullerton never caught up and fell behind by as many as 10 points at with 6:28 remaining. But the Titans used a 10-2 run to stay close and it was with 29 seconds to play. Twice MSU missed a free throw but twice it got the rebound to maintain possession and the lead. Facing a similarly inexperienced team minus four starters from last year, the Titans won the battle of the boards and the free-throw line and posted nearly identical statistics everywhere else. They survived three players fouling out and four missed Torero shots in the final five seconds including Matt Dorr s 3-point attempt off the rim at the buzzer. Slowly breaking away from a 3-3 tie, the Titans led for about 34 minutes and by as many as 11 points, the last time at with 10:43 to play. But the Toreros, who made only 6 of 15 3-point tries, made four in a row to fuel a 21-7 run that produced a lead with 3:18 to play. Perry Webster scored the next 5 points of the game -- his only 5 of the night -- to put Fullerton back ahead to stay at with 1:54 left. USD made only 1 of 4 free-throw tries on its next two possessions but had a chance to win when the Titans committed a turnover and missed a shot on their two possessions. Three USD shots from the paint rolled off the rim before Devon Peltier rebounded and was fouled with 1.3 seconds left. He made two free throws for the final score and a personal career high of 24 points, 14 in the second half. Eric Williams got his first Div. I start and played a career-high 22 minutes. Steve Jurich played 21 off the bench after recovering from back trouble.

For about 22 minutes, it was a promising adventure. With USC turning the ball over 9 times in the first half to four for Fullerton, the Titans overcame the expected disadvantage on the backboards against a pair of 6-foot- 10 forwards to trail only at the half. The Titans never led but had come back to tie four times. When Orlando Brown made a 3-pointer a few minutes into the second half to cut the deficit to a point, the Trojans awoke. They used a 14-4 run to build a doubledigit lead and then they gradually pulled away to a lead as large as 30 points. Four CSF turnovers in the first four minutes led to several breakaway baskets and then the Trojans got their inside-outside game going. Five-foot-7 Maurice Jones took advantage of the Titans convergence on the posts to lead the way with 20 points, 17 of them in the second half. There were three bright spots for Fullerton. Jer Vaughn Johnson made his season s debut and managed a rusty 13 minutes. Sedric Martin took advantage of his first start to score 13 points under and around the towering Trojans. And Perry Webster slowed Jones in the first half and had 4 steals, no turnovers and 5 assists to offset a field-goal less night. The Titans were ragged on offense and soft enough on defense that Cal State Bakersfield looked more at home, shooting 53 percent and 63 percent from the 3-point line in the first half as it built a 14-point lead that dwindled slightly to at the half. But the Titans, who committed 10 turnovers in the first half, went on an 11-3 surge to open the second half to tie the game at 49. The Roadrunners regained the lead and built it to as many as 5 points but the Titans came back again. A tie at 8:57 was broken by an Orane Chin 3-pointer and the Titans led the rest of the way. Two numbers stand out. The Titans dominated the rebounding, 43-20, and cashed in at the free-throw line, hitting 33 of 37 shots. But a third number impressed Coach Bob Burton. That s how many minutes Jer Vaughn Johnson was able to play in his comeback from a knee injury and he made the most of them, sharing team scoring and rebounding honors with 17 points and 9 boards. He scored 9 unanswered points as the Titans turned a deficit into the tie. The win was Fullerton s 12th in a row over Bakersfield dating to 1973 and ran its non-conference home-court winning streak to 11 with its 30th win in the last 31 opportunities. But then the Grizzlies heated up and relied on their towering size and numerous freethrow opportunities to overcome an 8-point Fullerton lead. Fullerton didn t exactly light up the big sky night in the first half either, managing 29 points on 30 percent shooting. But Montana, which hadn t played in more than a week, shot only 26 percent in the first half and made only 1 of 10 tries from the 3-point line and fell behind, Fullerton twice led by 8 points, the last at 17:36 to go on a Devon Peltier jumper. The Griz then went on a 12-4 run to tie the game at 39. Fullerton s last lead was at 10:56 on a Steve Jurich putback but the Griz scored the next 8 points to take control, 51-45, at 6:46. Montana never pulled away as the Titans stayed one or two possessions behind despite missing 5 of 7 free throws down the stretch. Perry Webster ended that frustration with a pair at the 20-second mark to make it but Will Cherry hit four free throws for the final tally and an 11-for-16 effort at the stripe in the final two minutes by Montana. CSF battled evenly on the backboards but the Griz blocked 11 shots -- six by 6-foot-11 Brian Qvale -- and made shooting miserable for the Titan forwards. Johnson missed only one of 9 shots on his way to a career scoring high of 23 points and Guardia followed up his breakout performance at Montana with a sizzling shooting night (4-for-4 treys), netting 14 points in only 20 minutes of action. USD, which lost the first meeting at the free-throw line, was on target this night (29 of 35) and that kept the Toreros in the game. USD also picked up two points when CSF Coach Bob Burton picked up a rare technical foul for over-protesting a non-call on a physical USD screen. USD s last lead was midway through the first half. But Fullerton led by only 2 points at the half and it was only advantage with 9 mnutes remaining. Guardia hit a trey to trigger a 7-0 run and the Toreros would never get closer than 8 points as Fullerton maintained a doubledigit lead ove the final 5:42. Perry Webster scored only 4 points but had 10 assists and no turnovers before fouling out with 1:26 to play. The wn stretched CSF s streak of home non-conference wins to 12 in a row and 31 of the last 32.
