The two squads last faced each other in February 2012, when Davidson managed to pull their 17th victory against Appalachian with a win at home. Both Davidson and Appalachian State are 1-0 in conference play. Appalachian returns to its SoCon schedule after notable matchups against East Tennessee State, Virginia Tech, and West Virginia. The Wildcats have played a challenging schedule leading up to Friday s game, including their notable losses against powerhouse programs North Carolina, Rutgers, and Miami. Scouting the Wildcats Davidson is 4-6, most recently falling short against UNC Charlotte (69-54). The Wildcats are 2-0 at home, and, like Appalachian, are 1-0 in SoCon play at home. As a unit, Davidson averages 54.3 points each game, along with 38.1 rebounds and 20.7 turnovers. The Wildcats hold a negative margin against opponents in these three categories. The Red and Black return top contributers Sophia Aleksandravicius, Laura Murray, and Roslyn Presley. Sophia Aleksandravicius leads the team in scoring, posting an average of 14.5 per contest, along with 10.2 rebounds a game. Aleksandravicius also ranks ninth (250 ranked) in the nation in blocked shots, and has tallied 33 so far this season. Davidson s Barbara Sitton is the Wildcat leader in assists (48) and steals (32). Series History APP leads the series, The Mountaineers look to break Davidson s current two-game streak after a pair of losses last season; both awarded by seven points or less. Of the 43 meetings between Appalachian and Davidson, eight contests have been decided by ten points or less, while nine of the matchups have come down to under five points. App State holds three winning streaks of six games or more against Davidson, accounting for 19 of the Mountaineer s 26 victories in the series history. App s Loss at West Virginia (Box Score on Page 10) The Mountaineers fought hard, falling just short against West Virginia, picking up a loss. APP shot recorded 42.4 percent shooting for the night. Statistically, WVU was not far ahead with 47.1 percent field goal shooting. For the 110th straight contest, the Mountaineers forced 20 or more turnovers against an opponent. WVU committed 26. AWAY FROM HOME The Mountaineers are 2-2 in away games so far this season, including a huge overtime win at Xavier University. As a unit, Appalachian has averaged 74.2 points per game on the road, with a six point scoring margin. Appalachian has proven proficient on defense, forcing an average of 21 turnovers and grabbing 11.8 steals. Anna Freeman, Courtney Freeman, and Maryah Sydnor have each averaged double figures on the road this season. The trio, along with Kelsey Sharkey, have started all four road games. Four Mountaineers have shot 80 percent or better at the line, including Anna Freeman, Maryah Sydnor, Katie Mallow, and Raven Gary. CLIMBING THE BOARDS Appalachian favorite Anna Freeman has been full-steam ahead since stepping foot on App s campus. Only nine games into the season, Freeman has already managed to climb four spots among the Mountaineer s all-time scoring leaders to number three. Freeman ranks among the Top 100 players nationally in seven different categories, including a top ten (8) spot in free-throw percentage; a significant component to the Mountaineer s number one national ranking in free-throw percentage. Anna has already secured her place as App s all-time blocks leader with 222, and stands comfortably as Appalachian s third all-time leader in steals (321), rebounds (810), and points (1530), while ranking fourth in assists (365) stands comfortably as Appalachian s third all-time leader in steals (321), rebounds (810), and points (1530), while ranking fourth in assists (365) and field goals (360), and seventh in three pointers (126). LOOKING FOR A THREE-PEAT Appalachian State enters the campaign as one of the favorites to win the Southern Conference title for a third-straight season. No current SoCon member institution other than Chattanooga has won three-straight SoCon titles since Appalachian accomplished the feat in , and App State s SoCon title during the season marked an end to a decade of dominance by Chattanooga, which had won at least a share of the conference crown for 11-straight seasons, including nine outright titles. RECORD WATCH ANNA FREEMAN Anna moves up again to become App s third all-time leading scorer with 1,530 points. 20 steals from becoming Appalachian s second all-time leader in steals. With 12 more field goals, Freeman, who has 360 to-date,- becomes App s third all-time leader.
