Anna Claire Knight and Meredyth Frye follow in scoring with 10.0 and 6.5 a game, respectively. ON THE ROAD Appalachian State is in road games under head coach Darcie Vincent. Last season, the Mountaineers finished with a 13-5 road record including a 1-2 mark against ACC opponents (both losses came to Virginia). OUT OF CONFERENCE The Apps have also been strong against non-conference opponents under Vincent. Over the past four seasons, the Mountaineers are in non-conference games and went 10-4 against non-socon foes a year ago. The score tied 8 times in the contest, with 12 lead changes. THREE-PEAT ASPIRATIONS Appalachian State enters the campaign as one of the favorites to win the Southern Conference title for a third-straight season. No current SoCon member institution other than Chattanooga has won three-straight SoCon titles since Appalachian accomplished the feat in , and App State s SoCon title during the season marked an end to a decade of dominance by Chattanooga, which had won at least a share of the conference crown for 11-straight seasons, including nine outright titles. VETERAN EXPERIENCE One of the key attributes in Appalachian s favor this season is its deeply-experienced lineup. The Mountaineers return four starters from last year s record-breaking squad including reigning SoCon Player of the Year Anna Freeman and Freshman of the Year Maryah Sydnor. In addition, the Apps also return seniors Kelsey Sharkey and Courtney Freeman. Appalachian s fifth starter this year is expected to be senior Raven Gary, who takes over at the point guard position after seeing a vast amount of playing time off the bench a year ago. APPALACHIAN BY THE NUMBERS 2 Straight Southern Conference titles for Appalachian State. The Mountaineers last won back-to-back titles in and Straight postseason appearances for Appalachian. The Mountaineers made the WBI in 2010 and the WNIT in 2011 and Mountaineers from the squad who are in the App State record book Top 10 lists. Anna Freeman, Canesha Edwards, Catherine Williams and TC Weldon each rank in the Top 10 in at least one category. 16 Times that Anna Freeman has scored 20 or more points in her career. Eight of those performances came last season season. The Apps are a sterling 12-1 when she hits the 20-point mark. 23 Steals for the Mountaineers in wins over ETSU and Georgia State during the campaign. That number tied the previous school record set on Jan. 8, Times that a Freeman led App State in scoring last season. Anna Freeman led the Apps in scoring 18 times while Courtney Freeman did the same in seven games. 25 App State was an incredible 25-0 when leading with 10 minutes left to play last season. 27 Wins for the Mountaineers last season. That number breaks the old school record of 25 set in It also gave the Apps three-straight 20+ win seasons for the first time ever. 48 Wins in SoCon play for App State over the past three seasons. The Mountaineers are in 60 SoCon games since the start of the season, a winning percentage of Straight games that Appalachian has forced 10 or more turnovers. The Mountaineers have not forced less than 10 turnovers in a contest since a loss to Chattanooga on March 6, Blocks that Anna Freeman has compiled during her career at Appalachian State; the highest career total in Appalachian history

Along the way, the Mountaineers saw a new player enter the 1,000-point club at App State and finished the year with a new career leader in blocked shots. App State also captured its second-straight SoCon regular-season title and advanced to the conference title game for the second-straight year. Despite falling to SoCon rival Samford in the championship game for the second time in a row, the Apps made the most of their postseason opportunity after being selected to participate in the 2012 WNIT. After dispatching UNC Wilmington in the first round, the Mountaineers notched a program defining win to send them to the third round of the tournament. On March 17, 2012, App State took the floor in historic Reynolds Coliseum on the campus of North Carolina State and pulled off one of the greatest upsets in school history. In 24 previous meetings against the Wolfpack, Appalachian State had never picked up a victory. The Mountaineers were able to shake history by serving up a stunning, victory over NC State to advance to the Sweet 16 of the WNIT. Not only did the victory mark the Apps firstever win over its in-state rival, but also made it the first SoCon team to advance past the second round of the WNIT since 1984, when Chattanooga advanced to the semifinals of what was then a three-round, eight-team tournament. The magical run would end five days later at Virginia, but App State had already made it known that it once again had become a force to be reckoned with on the national stage. The Mountaineers finished with a school record 27 wins, picked up 17 wins in league play for the second-straight season and won backto-back SoCon titles for the first time since the and seasons. In addition to the team s accomplishments, several individuals stood out during the year. Anna Freeman not only became Appalachian s all-time leader in blocks but also became the 21st player in App State history to score 1,000 carer points, accomplishing the feat in a win over Longwood on Dec. 31. The junior forward also earned SoCon Player of the Year honors from the league s media members and was a unanimous first-team all-socon selection. 5 One of Appalachian s youngest players also made a splash in her first season in the SoCon as Maryah Sydnor earned Freshman of the Year honors from the league s media. She was also a unanimous all-freshman selection and earned SoCon all-tournament accolades after torching Chattanooga for 30 points in a win in the semifinals of the league tournament. Another Mountaineer junior, Courtney Freeman, earned second-team all-socon accolades and ended the season just 130 points shy of becoming the 22nd player in school history to notch 1,000 career points. A key cog in Appalachian s success during the season, senior guard TC Weldon wrapped up her time in the High Country by earning SoCon all-tournament honors for helping the Mountaineers reach the league championship game. COACH VINCENT Q&A What type of player are you looking to bring to Appalachian State? It really starts with the intangibles. We start by looking at the character of the individual. That s something that was instilled in me when I was growing up. We want to bring in young ladies who will work hard and have great personalities. As a staff, we can help them learn how to pass, dribble or shoot, but the intangibles aren t something we can teach. Players either have the right intangibles or they don t. Beyond that, we look for pieces to the puzzle. As a staff, we really view our system as a puzzle and we have to find the right pieces for that puzzle. When we evaluate talent, we want to have a wide array of skills across the board. The things that Anna Freeman can do are totally different than what Courtney Freeman can do for us. If you look at the five freshmen we re bringing in this year, they are completely different from one another. That recruiting philosophy of character first, talent second has really worked out well for us. You have the occasional bump in the road personality-wise sometimes but, for the most part, we ve been very successful with the types of people we ve brought in. What do you want people to think of when they think of Appalachian State women s basketball? The first thing we want them to think of is the tradition of this program. There s a ton of history and a lot of success that s come out of this program and I think we ve been able to regain that. As for our opponents, we want them to remember that they played us. We want to stick in their minds as the physical team that comes in and makes them feel bruised after the game. We want the other team to look at us and say We better put on our track shoes because we ve gotta run with App. We need our boxing gloves on because we ll need to slug it out with them and we ll need our body armor because we re going to get bruised. People have come to me and said that they ve really enjoyed watching us. Folks who weren t women s basketball fans before they saw us say they re becoming fans. I think we ve done a really good job of creating a style that s aggressive and fun to watch. We want to be a very physical team that plays at a fast pace. I think we ve developed into a team of really tough, physical players and that s what we want people to think about when they think of Appalachian State women s basketball. What are some of the biggest selling points you use when recruiting players to App State? The two biggest things we tell them about are the education they ll get and the athletic tradition we have here. The University as a whole is an absolutely wonderful place to be. It s one big family here at App. It s an extremely comfortable place to be. If you take a walk down King Street, you feel comfortable and welcomed. Everyone who steps on campus here says the same thing; that they really feel comfortable in the family atmosphere. Whether its at the restaurants people visit when they re here or the hotel they stay at, everyone s friendly. Beyond that we talk about the athletic tradition. We ve obviously had a lot of success the past few years on our end of things, but all the other sports here have great traditions as well.
