STORYLINE: The UNLV Lady Rebels (0-0) begin their 27th season of basketball on Monday in a home matchup with Texas-San Antonio (0-1)... UNLV is 21-5 all-time in season openers, 16-2 when tipping off the year at home, and has never lost lid-lifters in back-to-back seasons. In last season s debut game, the Lady Rebels were stopped by No. 15 UC Santa Barbara, 77-56, in the first round of the Preseason WNIT... The Rebels are coming off split decisions of a pair of exhibition games. After suffering a three-point setback to the Chinese National Team (79-76) on Nov. 7, UNLV rebounded for a 29-point victory over the NWBL USA Elite team (91-62) on Nov As part of a special promotion, fans can get tickets for Monday s game for just $1 when they bring a canned food item to the UNLV ticket office. LADY REBELS ON THE AIR: Once again, all Lady Rebel games will be broadcast on radio throughout the Las Vegas area on KENO 1460 AM and throughout the world on unlvrebels.com. Only the men s basketball team at UNLV uses the nickname Runnin Rebels. THE OPPONENT: Texas-San Antonio began its season on Saturday night with a loss at Arizona State and will finish its road swing in Las Vegas. The Roadrunners return seven letterwinners and three starters from last season s 7-20 team. They are under the direction of first-year head coach Rae Rippetoe-Blair, who brought a career record with her to UTSA after five seasons at Phillips University in Enid, Okla. SERIES NOTES: UNLV and UTSA have met just once, with the Lady Rebels taking a victory in San Antonio in In Regina Miller s second game as UNLV s head coach, then-freshman Linda Fröhlich scored a game-high 25 points to go with her 12 rebounds as the Lady Rebels improved to 2-0 on the season. EXHIBITION REVIEW: The Lady Rebels split their two preseason exhibition games this season, falling to the Chinese National Team, 79-76, and defeating the NWBL USA Elite team, UNLV had a chance to become the first NCAA team to upset the talented Chinese Nationals. Down by a point with less than a minute to play, sophomore guard Constance Jinks drove past her defender on her way to the basket, but fumbled the ball out of bounds before she could get a shot off. The Chinese scored an insurance bucket on their next trip down to seal a three-point victory... Against the NWBL, the Rebels came out of the gate quickly, using a 13-2 run to take a lead they would never surrender. Led by Linda Fröhlich s 18 points and 11 boards, five Rebels scored in double figures and 15 different players saw action as UNLV cruised to a 29-point win. UNLV RECEIVES VOTES IN AP POLL: Well, it s not the top 25, but the Lady Rebels have made an appearance in the Associated Press poll. UNLV received three votes in the Preseason Poll, tying them with Stephen F. Austin for 45th. Mountain West Conference rival Utah ranks just ahead of the Rebels, tied for 43rd with four votes, while Colorado State checks in at 47th with two votes received. The Associated Press Poll ranks only the top 25 teams, but includes all other teams that also received votes. UNLV has not been ranked among the top 25 since Jan. 18, 1994, when the Lady Rebels ranked 25th with a 10-2 overall record. FRÖHLICH TO MISS THREE GAMES: When UNLV opens the season with a three-game homestand, it will be without the services of junior forward Linda Fröhlich. Fröhlich, who has led UNLV in scoring in both of the last two seasons, has returned to her home country of Germany to compete as a member of the German National Team in the European Championships. She will miss the Texas-San Antonio game and both games of the Cox Communications/Lady Rebel Shootout, but will rejoin the Rebels prior to their first road trip of the season when they head to Evanston, Ill., to compete in the Roger L. 3 LADY REBELS RETURN TO THE THOMAS & MACK: After rolling to a 10-5 record in its first full season at the Thomas & Mack Center, UNLV is happy to return to the venue in The Lady Rebels own an all-time record of in the Mack, in the arena s 18th season of basketball. This will be the last season that the Lady Rebels play in the Mack with the new Cox Pavilion set to open next year. UNLV CHOSEN FOURTH IN PRESEASON POLL: At its annual media day, the Mountain West Conference released its preseason coaches and media polls. The Lady Rebels were chosen to finish fourth in the MWC standings in both polls following a fifth-place finish and an 8-6 conference mark a year ago. Utah was chosen in both polls to defend its conference title. FRÖHLICH EARNS PRESEASON HONORS: Honors are nothing new to junior standout Linda Fröhlich, but the 6-2 forward from Oldendorf, Germany, has a couple more honors for her trophy case. She was chosen as a preseason All-American by Street & Smith s magazine after earning honorable mention All-America honors last season by both the WBCA and the Associated Press. She was also selected as the preseason Mountain West Conference Player of the Year by the league s coaches at its annual media day for the second straight year. MILLER HONORED IN THE OFFSEASON: Head coach Regina Miller collected some honors of her own this summer. In addition to a contract extension that will keep her on the Lady Rebels bench through at least the season, Miller was chosen as a court coach at the 2000 USA Basketball Women s Summer Development Camp, which is the trials for the Jones Cup team. She spent a week in Colorado Springs, Colo., working with many of the nation s elite players who were trying out for the national team. FRÖHLICH TO PLAY FOR GERMAN NATIONAL TEAM: As one of the top players in her home country of Germany, Linda Fröhlich was selected to the German National team and will compete with the squad in Germany for two weeks in mid-november. Although the international experience will help her game, the bad news is that she will miss the Lady Rebels first three games. She will miss the season opener against Texas-San Antonio and both games in the Cox Communications/Lady Rebel Shootout before rejoining the team prior to its first road trip of the year. ALL-UMLAUT TEAM: One statistic that the Lady Rebels are almost guaranteed to lead the country in this season is umlauts. An umlaut is a vowel sound caused by partial assimilation occurring in the following syllable and is indicated with a pair of dots over the vowel. After having just one umlaut in both of the last two seasons, the Lady Rebels are up to three on this year s roster: senior Viveca Löf, junior Linda Fröhlich and freshman Petra Gläser. IN THE TREES: Speaking of Löf and Gläser, the two overseas additions have helped UNLV to become the tallest team in the MWC. At 6-3 and 6-6 respectively, both are taller than any player on UNLV s roster. Throw in freshman Padra Strong, who stands 6-4, and the Rebels are no longer looking up at the rest of the league NOTES: UNLV posted its second straight 17-win season in and its first winning record in conference play (8-6) since the season... The Lady Rebels finished the year with wins in six of their last eight games, sandwiched by a pair of losses to conference champion Utah by a total of six points... Two school records fell to the squad -- three-point goals and three-point attempts. The Rebels made 128 shots from behind the arc last season, 11 more than the squad. Before Regina Miller took over the program, no UNLV squad has attempted more that 320 treys on a season ( ). That record first fell in , when the Rebels fired 360 three-pointers and was topped again last year with an amazing 414 shots. LOOKING AHEAD: Following Monday s game, UNLV plays host to the Cox Communications/Lady Rebel Shootout, with games slated for Friday, Nov. 24 and Saturday, Nov. 25. The four-team tourney features Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Charlotte and St. John s. Charlotte and St. John s will meet in the first game on Friday followed by UNLV and Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Consolation and championship games will be played on Saturday.
