2 UNLV V omen UNLV Game Notes vs. Troy, Dec. 29, Las Vegas Page 2 Head Coach Regina Miller Regina Miller has accomplished what she was brought to Las Vegas to do in 1998 to resurrect and build the Lady Rebels back into one of the nation s premier programs. She has also led UNLV to the postseason for a school record five straight seasons. Despite an injury-filled season in , Miller was able to guide the Lady Rebels to a record and a trip to the NIT. That followed the team, that had one of the most successful campaigns in school history, as UNLV finished with a 26-8 record and advanced to its first-ever appearance in the NIT championship game. UNLV also set a new school record with 10 MC wins. Miller guided the Lady Rebel squad to a mark and an appearance in the NIT UNLV finally broke back into the national scene after the Lady Rebels outstanding season in , in which they earned their first NCAA Tournament berth since the 1994 season and their eighth all-time appearance. That year s squad posted a remarkable 23-8 overall record, one of the best seasons in school history, which also included a MC tournament runner-up finish. In , the North Carolina native also guided her team to an impressive overall record and an appearance in the NIT. The previous two years, Miller led UNLV to back-to-back 17-win seasons after inheriting a squad that had only won four games in each of the previous three years. She turned her squad into the most improved team in Division I women s college basketball in just her first year at UNLV. On Dec. 9, 2000, she reached a personal milestone by collecting her 100th career victory against Eastern ashington. A victory over South Florida on Dec. 21, 2003, marked her 100th win at UNLV. She currently holds the fourth best winning percentage among UNLV women s basketball coaches all-time with a (.640) overall record. Miller came to UNLV after spending six seasons ( ) as the head coach at estern Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois. hile at IU, she led the esterwinds to the 1995 Mid-Continent Conference regular season and tournament titles as well as an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. For her efforts, she was honored as the 1995 Illinois Basketball Coaches Association s Coach of the Year. Coaching Career Conference Overall estern Illinois (6 yrs) UNLV (8 yrs) Total Players to atch It was expected that the combination of senior guard Sheena Moore, senior forward Sherry McCracklin and sophomore guard Sequoia Holmes would be the players to lead UNLV this season. However, two more players who have made their impact known this season as well are junior forwards Faye Muller and Kisha Lee. One of the most explosive scorers on the est Coast, Moore is in her second year at the point guard role but still leads UNLV in scoring with 11.8 ppg, 13th-best in the MC. Moore is also seventh in the league with 3.67 apg. McCracklin, the MC Defensive Player of the Year in , missed last season with an Achilies injury but has returned for her final season, and is second on the team in scoring (10.4 ppg) and third in rebounding (5.2 rpg). She is also second in blocks with 12. Perhaps the most athletic player in the MC, Holmes is an outstanding all-around player for the Lady Rebels. She is averaging 9.6 points (23rd in the MC), 5.0 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 2.5 steals for UNLV. A transfer from Northeastern JC, Muller grabbed double-figure rebounds in her first two games and is currently seventh in the conference with 7.8 rpg. She is ranks among the league leaders in both steals (19) and blocks (10). Lee entered the year with a 3.0 career scoring average, but has posted double-figures in five games and is 25th in the MC in scoring at 9.4 ppg, despite coming off the bench. She also averages 5.6 rpg, second best on the squad, and is third in the league with a 54.5 field goal percentage. Scouting Troy Troy comes into Thursday s game with a 5-4 mark, and a win would give the Trojans their first winning non-conference record since the season. Troy began the year with three straight wins, but have now dropped three of its last four games, including a loss at Georgia Tech on Dec. 22. Amy Lewis and Laura Lee Holman both are averaging 12.2 points per game to lead the Trojans in scoring. Holman also posts 5.8 rebounds per game, while Lewis has a team-high 28 assists. Alecia Jones is the team s leading rebounder with 7.3 per contest. Holman and Lewis are also the only players to have made more then four three-pointers this year, with 18 and 12 respectively. As a team, the Trojans are giving up 67.4 points per game, though they have shot well from the floor, hitting 44.5% of their shots. Troy is also strong from behind the arc (35.7%) and at the line (72.7%), but have been hurt by turnovers, averaging 20 per contest. By The Numbers UNLV Stats Troy 6-3, Overall Record , 0-0 #86...
