2 V omen 2006 Mountain est Tournament Notes March 7-11 Denver Page 2 Head Coach Regina Miller Regina Miller has accomplished what she was brought to Las Vegas to do in 1998 to resurrect and build the Lady Rebels back into one of the nation s premier programs. She has also led to the postseason for a school record five straight seasons. Despite an injury-filled season in , Miller was able to guide the Lady Rebels to a record and a trip to the NIT. That followed the team, that had one of the most successful campaigns in school history, as finished with a 26-8 record and advanced to its first-ever appearance in the NIT championship game. also set a new school record with 10 MC wins. That year s squad posted a remarkable 23-8 overall record, one of the best seasons in school history, which also included a MC tournament runner-up finish. In , the North Carolina native also guided her team to an impressive overall record and an appearance in the NIT. The previous two years, Miller led to back-to-back 17-win seasons after inheriting a squad that had only won four games in each of the previous three years. She turned her squad into the most improved team in Division I women s college basketball in just her first year at. On Dec. 9, 2000, she reached a personal milestone by collecting her 100th career victory against Eastern ashington. A victory over South Florida on Dec. 21, 2003, marked her 100th win at. She currently holds the fourth best winning percentage among women s basketball coaches all-time with a (.640) overall record. Coaching Career Conference Overall estern Illinois (6 yrs) (8 yrs) Total in the Mountain est Championships The Lady Rebels enter the 2006 MC Tournament as the sixth seed for the first time in the seven-year history of the tournament. It will also be the second time has played in the 3-6 game, the last was as the third seed in a win over #6 BYU in the 2004 Tournament. This is the second straight year, and third overall has been the lower seed in its quarterfinal matchup, and won both of the first two contests. This is the third and final year the MC Tournament will be played in Denver, as the first four years it was held in s Thomas & Mack Center, and it will return there starting in actually has a better record playing in Denver though (2-2,.500) as compared to Las Vegas (3-4,.429). In the semifinal game against third-seed New Mexico, the Lobos ended the game on a 13-4 run, and Sheena Moore s three-pointer at the buzzer was just off the mark in a loss. In last year s tournament, #3 held off #6 BYU in the quarterfinals behind a careerhigh 17 points from Kameca Simmons, and sealed the game when Henry caught an airball and laid it back in with 20-seconds to play. The Lady Rebels then held a halftime lead over Utah, but the second-seeded Utes rallied for a victory. and BYU met in the quarterfinals of the 2003 tournament, and despite a 24-point, 12- rebound performance from Sherry McCracklin (which earned her a spot on the all-tournament team), BYU s Erin Thorn hit a three-pointer with just four-tenths of a second to give the fifthseeded Cougars a victory in overtime over fourth-seed. Players To atch It was expected that the combination of senior guard Sheena Moore, senior forward Sherry McCracklin and sophomore guard Sequoia Holmes would be the players to lead this season. However, two more players who have made their impact known this season as well are senior forward Nikki Hitchens and junior forward Kisha Lee. One of the most explosive scorers on the est Coast, Moore is in her second year at the point guard role but still leads in scoring with 13.3 ppg, seventh-best in the MC.
